It's been over five years since we've seen a full-on numbered Soul Calibur title. Yesterday during the Game Awards, Bandai Namco revealed Soul Calibur 6.

The grand return to the weapon-based fighting series boasts new and returning characters, as well as all new game mechanics. So far, we've seen a young Mitsurugi and Sophitia, as well as a teaser for another character who might be a brand new combatant.

This installment in the series takes place in the 16th century, and according to the press release will "revisit the events of the original Soul Calibur to uncover hidden truths."

Mark Religioso, Brand Manager for Bandai Namco Entertainment America, notes that the fast and kinetic gameplay that fans know and love is back in full form with Soul Calibur 6. We'll be seeing a stellar lineup of weapons, and SC6 will feature a simple control layout that will be welcoming to players of all skill levels.

Soul Calibur 6 is being developed on Unreal Engine, like Tekken 7 was. Based on our first look, the game will offer an amazing visual experience, with highly detailed characters, stages, and weapons.

A new set of screenshots and concept art has been released. You can check them out below.

The company provided details on a brand new game mechanic in Soul Calibur 6 - Reversal Edge. "Reversal Edge enables characters to clash against each other and follow-up with powerful counterattacks based on their opponent’s actions," says the press release.

Long-time fans of the series will be happy to hear that the fluid 8-way run and ring out mechanic are also making a return.

Soul Calibur 6 is slated for a 2018 release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
