You can only play as and against characters from each series in Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition's Arcade Mode paths

No Zangief in Street Fighter 1, no Alex in Street Fighter 2, etc.

Yesterday, Capcom presented the public with new information on Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition. Capcom Unity showcased Arcade Mode with a live stream, and their blog updated shortly after with fresh details.

We learned several things about the upcoming game mode, but there was something very interesting that some fans may have missed. In Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition's Arcade Mode, players can only select characters from any given path to play through.

As we know, Arcade Mode is divided up into six different ladders, each tied to one of the main series in the Street Fighter franchise. So, if you play through the Street Fighter 1 path, you'll only face characters who appeared in that game (or Street Fighter 5 characters that represent them, which we'll get into in a second).

This exclusivity was put into place to preserve the theme of each series, and it extends to the characters you can play as in each path. Here is a line from the blog with the details.

"Each path stays true to the characters present in the respective series. For example, you can only select Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Akuma, Laura, Urien, Alex, Kolin, and Ibuki in Street Fighter III’s Arcade path – Sean is represented through Laura while Kolin appears briefly in Gill’s intro."

Essentially, you won't be able to play just anyone in each Arcade Mode path. So, no Zangief in Street Fighter 1 or Abigail in street Fighter 3, unless these characters end up representing another fighter from the series.

Capcom notes that there will be certain Street Fighter 5 characters among these paths that represent actual characters from that series. As we see, the examples above are Laura and Kolin in Street Fighter 3, representing Sean and Gil, respectively.

If you want to face any and all characters with any character of your choosing, however, Arcade Mode has a "Street Fighter 5" path that will likely allow you to do so -- considering it is set to feature all characters that appeared in the game. This path also has 11 battles to play through, making it the path with the highest number of matches.
