Three out of four EventHubs staff members are disgusted by this Urien punish combo - you won't believe what the fourth member said

Posted by Justin 'AdaptiveTrigger' Gordon • April 13, 2017 at 4:51 p.m. PDT

Every now and then, us EventHubs staff members are presented with something on our desks that leaves a huge divide in our happy little setup. As if Urien wasn't causing us to vomit enough as it is (probably from watching our characters get juggled all the time)...

What has the world come to when a Urien can punish a whiffed command grab after jumping backwards? Urien clearly defies the laws of nature.

What am I referring to exactly? Well, you see, AW|Nemo put up a video that showcases Urien punishing R. Mika's whiffed command grab with very impressive damage after jumping back.

Hit the jump below to hear what our local resident Urien main, Steven 'DreamKing' Chavez, had to say before being promptly fired (but we'll have to rehire him for tomorrow morning's shift).

"Since I'm the only one defending this combo, I will explain why I think it's fine as is.

Firstly, and this is the obvious one, Urien is using all of his resources to pull this combo off. Several characters can score that much damage with the same amount of meter.

Secondly, some characters can punish those who jump back (mostly from jump back OS), this character can punish a move with a ton of recovery when he jumps back. It's not the end of the world.

Character specific punishes have existed since as far back as I can remember. Back in Street Fighter 4, Balrog's weird hurtbox made him susceptible to all kinds of hard-hitting punishes that were specific to him.

Urien has a unique set of tools and can use them in very unique ways. All I can say is, if you're a Mika player... be careful trying to command grab Urien when he's fully stocked."

(Editor's note: In all seriousness, we all think this is a pretty cool combo, but don't tell Steven I said that.)

Requires full V-Trigger and full meter...

Zephyrus said on April 13, 2017 at 4:56 p.m.

full meter and v-trigger. not seeing the issue tbh

omnomnom said on April 13, 2017 at 4:58 p.m.

If you just blatantly whiff for stupid reasons and they're fully stocked, you deserve it.

xxMarshy said on April 13, 2017 at 4:58 p.m.

I don't see this as an issue, he uses every bit of his resources and only works if they read the command grab plus the damage seems pretty average for using every bit of meter. I don't play the game though so I may be wrong.

Blackoshinomi said on April 13, 2017 at 4:59 p.m.

So what's the problem here ?
I saw a wiff command grab

And Urien Responded Accordingly

Looks hot

Just really good tech. Get a read on a grab, he just gets the advantage of being able to punish on a jump back which is safer than a neutral jump.

Wintry said on April 13, 2017 at 5:23 p.m.

Just wanna say, that title is godlike. As is the banner.

AdaptiveTrigger said on April 13, 2017 at 5:24 p.m.

Ah... somebody gets it.

Catalyst said on April 13, 2017 at 5:28 p.m.

Yeah headline is just a play on the clickbait headlines you see on the web and of course having fun with people accusing us of doing the same. All in jest our actual thoughts are in the last line of the story. It's a damn great combo.

GiBGUN said on April 13, 2017 at 5:32 p.m.

Not saying anything novel or new here, but good god that banner/headline wins everything.

metaf4 said on April 13, 2017 at 5:33 p.m.

Ok fine...If people think that this isn't about this one then?

Everyone at one point jumps is THIS viable for broken status?

Urien V-trigger is an attack one and how can it got 5f start up is beyond my understanding

Batey9 said on April 13, 2017 at 6:37 p.m.

Well it wasn't a whiff. It was if Mika chooses to go for command grab during Oki and you just wake-up jump back.

Also, you'd be surprised how many Mika's you can make whiff command grab by doing dash in > jump back. It's not really a good idea, but, if they are grab happy, you can certainly do it.

Eye_of_Orochi said on April 13, 2017 at 6:54 p.m.

That banner made me seriously lol. Good lord hahaha

Captainbuttocks said on April 13, 2017 at 6:56 p.m.

No because is full stock on both meters. Its situational.

You should not be jumping fireballs on reaction in this game anyway.

AidanJames said on April 13, 2017 at 7:03 p.m.

Seriously... why does everyone pretend like Urien and Balrog always have the option to VT with full meter at all times?

TheTTimeLives said on April 13, 2017 at 7:07 p.m.

For those who don't get why this is sick, most command grab characters in this game are scary because they can "OS" with a normal throw and punish a neutral jump (Gief, Necalli, Laura etc.) for those trying to punish the command grab.

That means the ONLY way to escape assuredly from a command throw without taking a risk is a jump back, a position from which a huge majority of the cast can't punish the whiffed command throw after outside of super.

This means the Urien can full punish a whiffed command throw with Aegis, giving him even further wake up strength than he has.

It's not busted it's just really strong.

That_guy_who_plays_DOA said on April 13, 2017 at 7:13 p.m.

It's legit, he's firing everything

TheTTimeLives said on April 13, 2017 at 7:14 p.m.

Further elaborating:

I Delay Throw Tech OS on wakeup or against plus pressure where the opponent is in range to throw me, but that loses to command grab so I get scared and stop doing the OS, lowering my ability to counter regular throws ->

I neutral jump to avoid the throws coming, but my opponent knows I'm scared so he goes with the safer read and regular throws instead of command throws. This will lose to a Delay Throw Tech OS, but if I neutral jump, the regular throw recovers faster than the command throw, and he still has time to anti-air or air to air punish me for neutral jumping in an attempt to punish the command throw ->

Now that I've been punished for neutral jumping, I jump back. This beats both throw options and only loses to pressing buttons, but if he command throws, I don't get to punish the whiffed attempt ->

Except that last statement doesn't matter for Urien anymore when he has V-Trigger and he should just jump back whenever he thinks any throw is coming.

Dbarcelona said on April 13, 2017 at 7:24 p.m.

The whole problem I have with Urien isn't so much with punishes or damage it's actually with the V trigger system, then they threw another wrench at us by adding Kolin and giving her a 2 bar activation with 2 uses. Like really capcom... when Nash,Dhalsim,Rashid,Mika, and Vega only have one use to their vtrig.

some characters should get more usage of their vtriggers than they actually have right now, I for once would like if everyones was on par with the super useful ones cause at this point it's a blatant comback mechanic might as well embrace the chaos.

Capcom please nerf F. A. N. G in April. Urien and Balrog are fine.

CODYYY said on April 14, 2017 at 12:26 a.m.

people just hate urien because he has combos. i really dont understand why people find issue with this when it requires all meter and skill. urien is the only character in this game that is hard to use.

It's a cool combo.

It will take all of the meter and a hard read to pull off though. Jump back option select is getting taken out soon, so this seems more than situational.

keebler said on April 14, 2017 at 5:36 a.m.

It's not about whether or not it's an issue.

There was a big conversation on Twitter over the past weekend about command grabs being very strong in this game (which they are), and whether or not a whiff should eat a CC. Many people also suggested you should be able to get a better punish from a jump back. I'm pretty sure this vid was a direct response to that.

nightriderronin said on April 14, 2017 at 5:52 a.m.

This has to be the funniest comment in this thread. All of the Birdies, Alexes, and FANGs out there who have to play all kinds of frame trap, spacing, counter and mind games just to be average, and someone thinks that Urien, who has the reach, grab range, and speed to convert random fierce attacks into 30%+ blenders just as BnB/1 Bar combos without even really trying, is hard.

Hell, you don't even need to set up Aegis Reflector in this game, something you had to do every time in 2I and 3S.

Projectjustice said on April 14, 2017 at 6:15 a.m.

Guys you KNOW this one's real

JimmyLoves said on April 14, 2017 at 8:34 a.m.

Damage is too high in SFV for some characters. This is just another example. If you take away the super, this combo still does a massive amount of damage.

One thing that is OK about Urien: at least he takes some semblance of skill to do combos with.

Of course, in order to make him newbie friendly, Capcom made all his normals have retarded hitboxes and frame data.

They really should reduce damage across the board in this game, and make the normals more even for everyone. Many Uriens just run around spamming normals, and you have to really know which normals you can press a button against. This makes the game tedious, and if you are not into spending lots of time in training mode, unskilled players can score wins pretty easily [of course once you put the time in, you're fine].

omnomnom said on April 15, 2017 at 6:30 a.m.

Thanks for confirming that you only care about views and ad revenue by admitting that your content is click bait. This isn't April fools. You've essentially just revealed that you're a piss taker by acknowledging people's dislike for EH methods and still mocking it anyway. You (EH) are the cancer of SFV whether you want to accept it or not. Reading your articles is like watching some fake reality TV show "The Real Housewives of Street Fighter" or some crap like that. Money, celebrities and drama, that's all it is, no tournaments or match footage, just he said she said nonsense.
