Gootecks discusses his ELeague attire, fighting game history, and how a reality show audition aided in the creation of Cross Counter

One of the fighting game community's most recognizable faces, Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez, has been in the spotlight lately due to his recent participation in the ELeague Street Fighter 5 invitational event. Donning a leather jacket with the Cross Counter logo printed on it and sunglasses that many compared to something you'd see from the future, Gootecks has been on the top of the community's tongue for the past week or so.

King Jae managed to catch up with Gootecks to discuss a wide array of topics. From his humble beginnings in fighting games to pad vs. fightstick, the Excellent Adventures co-host shares quite a bit of interesting information.

One thing that many might not be aware of is how Cross Counter -- the entertainment network that creates varying content and handles different projects in the FGC -- came to be. Apparently, we have a reality show audition to thank for its creation.

"It came about because Mike [Ross] and I were auditioning for a gaming reality show called WCG Ultimate Gamer," Gootecks starts. "As I was waiting my turn to audition, this guy came out of this other office and was like 'hey, you're Gootecks,' and this was years before we had done a lot of stuff together."
He goes on to explain that the man who approached him represented Machinima, and asked if the two were interested in helping the online network make videos for Super Street Fighter 4. This led to the launch of Gootecks and Mike Ross' own original show called "Cross Counter" on Machinima that delved into replay analysis for those who were willing to send their footage in.

Further down the road, Machinima encouraged Mike and Gootecks to create their own channel, with the first videos uploaded being the start of the Excellent Adventures series. I can't help but think this was one of those "right place at the right time" situations.
