'Mario wasn't top 10 because his placings weren't great besides me and Anti at nationals' - Ally on why he used to not consider Mario top 10

There's been a lot of talk about whether or not Mario is a top 10 character these days. The character in general has been doing well in tournaments but it's hard to tell whether or not if it is really the players carrying the character.

We decided to reach out to to Elliot "Ally" Carroza on his opinion of Mario's current status in the Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U's meta game.

Ally is widely considered to be the best Mario main and was the EVO 2016 champion for Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. In general, he is considered to be one of the best players in the game.

Today we have part one of our interview with Ally where he explains where he thinks Mario will end up on the tier list. We also ask his opinions on some of the tier lists that have been released from three different sources.
AdaptiveTrigger: You once said that Mario is not a top 10 character in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. Do you still believe this?

Ally: No I believe he's currently 8th or 9th but it's hard to tell where exactly he is because the game is very inconsistent. I think I would just say Mario wasn't top 10 because his placings weren't great besides me and Anti at nationals.

AdaptiveTrigger: Which characters do you believe are higher on the tier list than Mario, currently and potentially? Where does this put Mario on your tier list?

Ally: I think Cloud, Sheik, Fox, Diddy, Sonic, Bayo, and Rosalina are higher than Mario, Mario being 8th or 9th.

AdaptiveTrigger: You mentioned that the game is "very inconsistent." What do you mean by that?

Ally: Results aren't normally dominated by one character or player. Zero is the closest but even he hasn't been as consistent.

AdaptiveTrigger: In Brawl you were known as the best Snake main. Obviously Snake did not return for the Wii U Smash Bros. What made you choose to main Mario?

Ally: So when I saw Snake wasn't coming back, I started playing Shulk on 3DS. I played with a lot of top players like Nairo, Anti, ZeRo, Nakat and others. But when I played Nakat he would always go Mario on me and just do Mario combo stuff and it would annoy me so badly that one day I decided to use Mario against him as well. I beat him and then stuck with Mario haha.

AdaptiveTrigger: What do you think are Mario's best traits?

Ally: He is fairly quick, great easy combo game, quick Upsmash (although very punishable), quick recovery and tons of mixups.

AdaptiveTrigger: What do you think are Mario's worst traits? Do you feel as though there is some weakness that many players aren't taking advantage of?

Ally: His problem is that his range is not great, trades too often with moves or loses to swords or anything with long range. And doesn't have a 100% kill confirm so it gets harder to kill at higher percent.

AdaptiveTrigger: Who do you think is the strongest character in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U right now?

Ally: Too hard to determine but I have a feeling Diddy Kong has overall better matchups than any other character.

AdaptiveTrigger: Any opinions on the most recent Smashboards tier list?

Ally: Even though the tier list isn't terrible, I don't think Ryu is that high so I normally don't pay attention to tier lists, it's too soon to know who is ranked what.

AdaptiveTrigger: Any opinions on ZeRo's most recent tier list?

Ally: It has a few characters like Rosalina and Ryu being so high and Diddy so low but the rest is not too bad.

AdaptiveTrigger: Any opinions on our community voted tier list?

Ally: Looks fine as well, most top tiers are the same just placed differently. That's why I'm saying it's too early to determine who is def 1, 2, 3, etc.
Be sure to check out part two of our interview with Ally where we talk specifically about Mario's match ups, what secondary is Ally potentially looking for to support Mario against his bad match ups, and more.

A big special thanks to Ally for taking the time to speak with us. If you want to see more from Ally, be sure to follow him on his Twitter account.
