Should Street Fighter 5 receive another balance patch before the start of the 2017 Pro Tour? See what our readers thought via these poll results

Posted by John 'Velociraptor' Guerrero • January 3, 2017 at 5:43 p.m. PST

Update: The poll in this story has been updated with final results. You can view it after the jump.

Earlier : Capcom has taken an interesting approach to Street Fighter 5 updates in that they have proposed just one major balance change each year, and while that certainly has its perks, some members of the community feel that SF5 should get one more tune up before the Capcom Pro Tour begins in 2017.

From game play mechanics to individual character moves, SF5 received 92 pages worth of changes in its Season 2 patch. Players have been delving in for about a week now as they try to get a handle on this new version of the game.

Tech monster and tournament player Javits recently tweeted about this, and even got a response from Capcom Cup finalist EG|Ricki Ortiz. Arturo Sanchez also brought the idea up on his Twitter:

Season 2 Patch image #1 Season 2 Patch image #2

Other eSports titles have made it common practice to beta test new patches to give players a chance to find issues like overpowered characters or random bugs.

With 92 pages worth of changes, it seems there'd be plenty of room for unforeseen strengths or weaknesses. As we've seen with just about every popular video game, the public masses can and will find out just about every efficient approach, bug, glitch and secret given enough time.

So we now turn the question over to you. Should Capcom treat these next few months as a beta test for SF5's second season patch, but perhaps tidy up any loose ends the community finds in that time with another patch just before the Pro Tour begins?

Should SF5 receive another balance patch before the start of the 2017 Pro Tour?

1. Yes: 495 votes / 65.2%
2. No: 264 votes / 34.8%

Yes,
1. Change Grey life back to Season 1 version.
2. Slightly buff overnerfed characters back.
3. For the fuqing love of grapplers remove Alex nerfs and buff Zangief's walkspeed.

Yes! Remove jab AA's. They are still way too good amd they are still beating crossups. And give everyone at least one good heavy or medium AA option. This is by far the most important part.

Also (but a bit less important) I think they should return invincible dp's so they game gets deeper and more diverse. At least give us the option of choosing a character that has it. It's not like ryu and ken were the top 2 in s1 and they were nerfed to the ground anyway

No but something will should change should be minor but no nerfs until season 3 just bit of buffs and fixes.
Universal
- Late Dp's Anti Airs works now

Ryu
-St.lk reverted back to season 1
-VT hadoken reduce V-meter by half that is currently.
-St.hp range increase forward

Ken
- St.mk reverted pushback to season 1, now you can whiff punish at range. This one was horrible change not many people seem to notice.

Nash
- Revert some nerfs or buff in some other way.

Gief
- V-skill white health adjusted to be half of what he currently takes.

Then some buffs to a few characters like fang, alex and etc. We have to wait until meta evolves even some things might look strong at first.

Still some small things that need to be fixed that they tried to remove in season 2 but forgot some characters. For instance Juri still has an insanely strong jab AA and when they buffed her throw they actually gave her a midscreen throw loop, along with a few other characters still having throw loops. Its a few months too early right now to do a balance update but they should keep an eye on how each character is doing and make small adjustments where needed, I'd say wait until all the season 2 dlc characters are out then make balance changes, that should still leave plenty of time for the pros to adjust before capcom cup.

#46
Aleksan said on December 27, 2016 at 9:49 p.m.

They said they would:

Make jumpins worse.
Conclusion: Jumpins are even better. Most characters added juggles for aa, are too slow to be used reactively. In addition dragon punches loose when used late and on top of that, most buttons in neutral got slower, making jumpins even better.
Did capcom deliver? No.

Nerf jab anti airs.
Conclusion: anti air jabs where nerfed in some scenarios, but they are still incredibly strong.
Did capcom deliver? No.

Make the game more neutral based.
Conclusion: Some buttons had added hurt-box in recovery. But the majority of buttons used in neutral are still unwhiffpunishable by most of the cast. In addition jump ins where made stronger. And dashes are still unreactable. Input delay was not further reduced.
Did capcom deliver? A large sound No.

Balance?
Some characters where slain as examples to make it look like they where trying to make things better. At the same time, already very strong characters got even stronger.
Has capcom delivered?
Looking at facts, they haven't listened to a WHOLE YEARS worth of complaints.

I fear for the future of the fgc. Most casuals have allready dropped the game. Only hardcores, and masochists are still playing.

God the thing the people here ask...

Imo, if any 'hotfix' should be made, it should be on Fang and just calm down a little the nerf on Alex.

While some character could use 'more', I don't think people tried to adapt. This is one of the biggest kneejerk reaction I ever saw if I saw one on a fighting game. It is sentinel nerf level of salt.

People can't balance when you don't even know how a meta will evolve. Pre-emptive nerf hurt the health of a game and careless buff can create issue later on.

Just wait a little and see how the meta and gameplay goes around.

And this is coming from someone who generally hates change. But the hard part is over, we already faced our nerfs and buffs, time to work with what you had, lost, and gained.

no I don't. I remember scrubs crying about infiltration winning, but I don't remember Nash being broken.

Every Nash main either dropping him or drop more than 50 ranks on cfn doesn't sound like overreacting.

Watching Bonchan lose every round where he's put into the corner doesn't sound like overreacting.

But what does a guy who was right about this game's tiers during the entire season 1 knows?

#55
vII_BATMAN_IIv said on December 27, 2016 at 9:58 p.m.

I'm just speaking fun factor here. I think they should do another patch. Seems some characters got sick juggle combos in season 2. I LOVE THIS! Expand on it more and get the rest of the cast in on the fun! Maybe even give some characters launchers like Akuma has. That would be sick.

Also, as #1 said, something has to be done about gray life recovery. It really hurts Zangief's V-Skill. Either change it back to S1 speed or at least make it so hitting the opponent increases recovery rate. That way you could reward a gief player for using V-Skill correctly and landing an SPD.

Just my thoughts.

Scrubs beating you in v and not in 4 means that you are bad at 5 and were good at 4... scrubs loose even harder in sfv. sfv is about players... you hate it because you need video game tricks to cover the fact that your mind is weak... easier for you to say the game is random instead of acknowledging your lack of mental strength...

I don't want a second patch... I want the fgc to evolve and start mastering there mind instead of a virtual avatar. The future of fighting games is to become a real , mind vs mind battle. SFV is the first real step for this goal to happen... capcom removed every single minded tools and designed the characters to let the players be the real star. Commit to offense, or defense, think and manipulate ...

Please fgc , lighten up... you have every other game if you want a video game... let sfv be its own thing. The game is perfect as it for all season 2.

One last thing.. if you think that they destroyed mika, please drop the game. You will never like it. For real.

Toomnyusernae said on December 27, 2016 at 10:33 p.m.

Total agreement. Chip except via CA. Meaties defeating wakeupdps that aren't ex. Gray life promoting continued offence. If people want to return to an old engine then do so. Let this one evolve and develope its own flavour.

#61
Bokator said on December 27, 2016 at 10:41 p.m.

Just two changes.
Make all v reversal invincible, no grabs.
Disallow hail mary ex spammers because it's a free attack move by having frames of vulnerability after every ex move.
Hate these Chun Li ex legs, Birdie ex dash, and Urien EX dash hail mary moves because they can block or go into a combo after. I noticed players are just throwing these out because the advantage is wholly there's. Doesnt make sense to make ex moves any more advantageous besides the attack speed and damage potential they already offer.

#62
SteelyReserves said on December 27, 2016 at 10:45 p.m.

It absolutely should receive another balance patch as fast as possible. The white life nerf needs to be reversed almost entirely, Nash/Alex/Gief/Fang should have some nerfs reversed or new buffs added and almost no nerfs should be applied to Laura/Urien/Balrog. They should only be trimmed ever so slightly. Honestly, I'd be okay with it if they didn't get touched at all. Just buff the crappy characters goddamn.

iljindaebak said on December 27, 2016 at 10:53 p.m.

How about letting the game evolve instead of slapping a patch on the game every few months, games like 3S and ST we're played at such a high level because people learned to master what was there but when you keep changing the elements available that high level of mastery is hard, if not impossible to achieve.

#65
masquedmonk said on December 27, 2016 at 10:55 p.m.

I voted no but I'm not wholly against it. Using these next few months as a test makes for a certain sort of sense.

But if they have no plans to change anything I stand by that, too. The patches aren't only for the Pro Tour, they are for everyone. That being said, I'm hard pressed to figure out whom was referenced when some of these changes were made. Hearing Woshige basically refer to wake-up DP's as "dishonest" (paraphrasing) was disappointing, and makes me feel Capcom was making certain changes because too many people were crying about things.

#66
HyperCombinationFinish said on December 27, 2016 at 10:57 p.m.

Should it? Maybe. Will it? Highly unlikely. I'm still in favor of the midseason patch after evo, but patch twice within the span of a few weeks? That's super kneejerk

#67
masquedmonk said on December 27, 2016 at 11:05 p.m.

That's my alternative idea as well - especially with the possibility that a second character pass can easily be squeezed in between June and December. First character would be in July, after Evo with new changes.

#68
dorayaki said on December 27, 2016 at 11:11 p.m.

Actually, he may or may not be able to articulate it or deconstruct it precisely, but there is more of a "random" factor involved with SFV. Apparently, you aren't able to understand what it is he is referring to.

Obviously, a terrible player isn't going to "randomly" beat a pro player in the game. However, the lines between traditional levels of mastery have been blurred in SFV. The primary reasons for this is damage output/potential and ease of combos.

Ex., player A can have zero life while player B has 35% and it is NOT uncommon for player A to win with one-touch. This mechanic was available in previous titles, but never to this extent. The thing is that many characters have TWO separate, independent ways to dish out 30-40+% damage at any given time - Vtrig, CA. That, along with the ease of comboing, makes it "anyone's game" when health falls under 30-40% and gauges are near full - which OFTEN happened.

The latest patch seems to have attempted to address this issue a bit by harder meter gains, less damage/stun, etc. I don't feel that it's going to make a huge difference, though (hope to be wrong). We'll see how it shakes out.

#69
Darkorn said on December 27, 2016 at 11:17 p.m.

Give it time for us to become accustomed to the changes or at least let us see how these changes affect character choices in major tournaments before doing any knee jerk reactions. For all the hyperbolic things said about these changes I'm convinced that we will likely see only a handfull of Uriens in tournaments and still plenty of Mika's taking advantage of the lack of dp invincibility and terrorising corners

We also have five new characters on the way which will all bring new aspects and even some new game mechanics which will likely need time to settle before doing anything.

yes, mainly because of the change to charge moves, i don't think they intended for the window to be so small you can't get db,f,db + button charge moves or in some cases cancel consistently unless you're like god tier, 9 is more reasonable if they thought 12 was too much.

Smorgasboard said on December 28, 2016 at 12:42 a.m.

They did a lot of open beta for balance changes back in SF4. What we found out was

1. It's a very laborius and time consuming work. About months of additional work.
2. Most people ask for unreasonable or useless things that have nothing to do with balance.
3. The game still wont be perfectly balanced.

Also to preempt the suggestion for balancing with a selected group of pros. Netherealms did that and what we found was

1. Pros only care about buffing their main
2. Pros would hide things that could potentially be OP so that they could take advantage of it.
3. The game still wont be balanced.

Balancing a game is more subjective than most people believe. Adding more voices just add more opinion, not necessarily better opinions.

#84
Bokator said on December 28, 2016 at 12:56 a.m.

People should quit the crying about Nash. He has all the tools still. Now you're crying cause you're forced to play strategically instead of your dashes and constant pressure.
When I picked up SF again, I thought Capcom people, during their brainstorm, gave Nash all the best moves and recovery time.

The only character needing a bit if backtracking is Urien.
However, I don't understand the need for all these changes. I thought some very minor tweaks here and there would have been fine for characters needing to even up a bit with the stronger ones. All these "balance" changes have created a lot of unnecessary imbalance that's going to need more tweaking later.

Just from the fact that you think that Chun has an advantage after EX Legs I can see that you have no idea what you are talking about

Yes,Juri didn't get nearly enough imo.

Outclassed my most of the cast, limited by her constant need to have stores and vskill charged, hardly rewarded for having them stocked as well.

Get used to the patch. There ain't going to be one before CPT, heck people are even mad that R.Mika AND Chun-Li got nerfed...(I main Chun-Li but...)
They deserved the huge nerfs.

There hasn't even been a single CPT event since the season 2 patch. It's barely even been a week. What an absolute joke. I never want to hear any of these people tell anyone to "adapt" ever again.

Also to be fair to Javits, he said he THINKS it will happen, not that he WANTS it to happen. Come on guys...

Nope. some pretty drastic changes have been made to the game and players are gonna need time to feel it out before we can tell what should and shouldn't be changed again. currently im really liking season 2. its like capcom is actually forcing people to play smarter and less stupid. less rewards for stupid risks.

1. AT LEAST CHANGE THE DPS SO THEY AREN´T THROWABLE, for the love of God, if there´s only one change, this is the one.
2. Raise Akuma's stun, he already has a really low health. 900 should be fine.
3. Buff Ryu HP DP in 10 damage. Right now, there´s no difference between medium and heavy. I´d really like to increase it´s duration a little, but I think that would be hard to happen.
4. Lower Urien´s Health to 1000, as a standard.
5. Make Gief´s Lariat startup faster, like 4 frames.
