'The roster discussion is probably the most intense one' - Matt Dahlgren talks character choices, Street Fighter 5 as a progressive platform

We've certainly heard a lot about Street Fighter 5 over the past year, but despite this, Capcom's Matt Dahlgren still has more to share, as seen in his interview with Greg Miller and Tim Gettys during the recent Gamestop Expo.

One of the main topics covered in the interview is the difficulty of ironing out the roster, with Dahlgren stating "The roster discussion is probably the most intense one internally before the game comes out. We're starting with a core roster of 16 characters, and are revealing characters continuously after that."

Matt Dahlgren also re-confirms that there will be eight "most known" Street Fighter characters, four brand new fighters, and four that haven't been seen in a long time from the main games, as the launch roster. Also discussed are the implications of Street Fighter 5 as a progressive platform as opposed to a one-off game.

When discussing Street Fighter 5 as a platform, Miller asks if the decision to make it a service was a hard one for Capcom to make. "We pay attention to a lot of things going on in the industry", Dahlgren says, "we also got a lot of backlash from the moniker of doing Super Street Fighter 4, or stuff like that."

When asked about what's most exciting about SF5 for him, Matt divulges, "For me, it's everything coming together. All in all it's a perfect storm". He talks about the beta program's eventual success, the upcoming Capcom Cup, and Street Fighter 5's eventual release and involvement with the competitive scene going forward.

At one point in the interview, Dahlgren also notes the importance of fan feedback in terms of the roster for Street Fighter 5. "We consulted a variety of sources, we did this [fan] poll a few years back, and we definitely referenced that". It would seem Capcom is paying very close attention to the words of it's fans, as well as the words of the gaming community at large, to try and push Street Fighter forward.

When asked about a date, Matt would only say Spring 2016, so it seems we aren't getting a hard date for the game yet. He also re-iterates that all balance patches and game updates will be available free of charge, and highlights the in-game currency, as well as this model's success from other game companies.

Street Fighter 5 is really beginning to come together, as Dahlgren said himself, and it's exciting to see where the game will go from here, as well as what else we'll learn about going forward.
