'I hope that people who avoided Vega in the past will like him in SF5' - Reiketsu talks tournaments, Street Fighter 5, reasons for using Vega and more

Posted by Nicholas 'MajinTenshinhan' Taylor • November 25, 2015 at 5:01 a.m. PST

Note: This interview was conducted in Japanese and subsequently translated by the interviewer.

We're very committed here at EventHubs to bringing you as many interviews with top players as possible. As such, we've reached out to a bunch of top-level Japanese players that people outside of Japan might not be too personally familiar with.

Our final player in this phase is the masked terror himself, Reiketsu. With strong showings across his several tournaments appearances this year using his stellar Vega, he's gearing up for DreamHack this weekend along with Gonzales.

In the interview, Reiketsu talks about his reasons for choosing Vega, how he feels about the drastic changes made to the character in the upcoming Street Fighter 5, DreamHack prospects and more. You can find a snippet below.

MajinTenshinhan: When did you start playing fighting games?

Reiketsu: The first fighting game I touched was the first version of King of Fighters 2002, so that was 13 years ago. At that time, I was satisfied just having learned the special moves for my characters.

It wasn't until Street Fighter 4 that I started playing fighting games seriously. A big trigger for me was seeing Kindevu's match at SBO 2010. The whole match fired me up, and I remember thinking "I want to be up on that stage one day!"

Hit the jump for the rest of the interview.

MajinTenshinhan: Why did you choose Vega as your character in Street Fighter 4?

Reiketsu: Actually, I didn't start using Vega at first, but was using Ken. But one day, a friend of mine who was a Vega main told me "No matter what I do, I can't beat Zangief with Vega. Can't you try it?"

When I tried it out, Vega felt so bad I was honestly surprised. Against this Zangief player I'd never lost against with Ken, I lost time and time again with Vega, and felt like I honestly couldn't do anything at all.

After that, I decided in my heart "I want to keep using Vega until I'm good enough to beat this Zangief". In the end, I kept playing Vega even though I never went up against that Zangief player again, and here we are now.

MajinTenshinhan: Street Fighter 5 is set to be released next year. Are you interested in playing it, and what character do you plan on using if you are?

Reiketsu: I've actually never played any numbered title besides SF4 in the Street Fighter series, so I'm excited for Street Fighter 5. I'll definitely be using Vega. I also want to play the strongest character as well, or maybe a character who covers Vega's weaknesses.

MajinTenshinhan: Throughout Street Fighter 4's history, it hasn't been uncommon for people to consider Vega a weak character. In this current Ultra Street Fighter 4 version, how good do you feel Vega is compared to the rest of the cast?

Reiketsu: If you use Vega to his full potential and bring out exactly everything out of the character, I feel he has the potential to be just one tier lower than the very top class (being characters like Evil Ryu and Elena).

However,as a character he's so reliant on fast reactions and quick situational judgment, that right now, at my own level, I feel like I can only bring him up to a mid-tier level.

MajinTenshinhan: Vega will be appearing in Street Fighter 5 as well, but he's been changed to such a degree that you might even consider him a brand-new character. Compared to the Street Fighter 4 Vega you've put so much time into, how do you think you'll like this new Vega?

Reiketsu: Yeah, my first impression was that it's like Cammy and Decapre in Street Fighter 4 where the only similar thing is their appearance.

I'll be happy if people who might've avoided him, thinking "I like the character and his design, but charge characters, I don't know..." start trying him out and liking him.

MajinTenshinhan: DreamHack Winter 2015, taking place in Sweden next week, is going to be the last hope for people who want to get into Capcom Cup. You'll be participating in this event as well, how do you feel? Are you confident?

Reiketsu: Since champions from many different countries are gathering, I can't exactly say that I'm confident, but I want to make the most out of this last tournament.

Huge thanks to Reiketsu for agreeing to do this interview with us, and we wish him the best of luck at DreamHack Winter 2015.

As someone that has been free to Vega since Elementary School, I hope not.

I hope the minority of us that actually like charge-characters still have someone to use. Vega has been my main for many games, and I feel like I am the only one even slightly disappointed with the change :/

I talked to him a little bit at SCR. He seems like a really nice dude and has become one of my favorite players to watch (despite the fact that I absolutely loathe Vega).

It's already bad enough that mids and lows don't play opposite roles in 2d fighters so that the characters aren't always squatting on the ground. We're used to it but it does look silly. And charge characters are twice as bad for it.

I used to have 20k BP with Vega on PC (dropped him after Rolento came out because of how bad he is) but from what I see the transition from charge to motion based Vega shouldn't change his play style too much, he still seems like a footsies character, just that I feel his FBA might be ridiculous since you don't need to charge for it and can almost escape immediately before you get cornered. Haven't tried SF V so I can't anything much though.

As a Balrog main in all SF games I am ashamed to say that I enjoyed Vega a little bit in the beta.

Vega has always been one of my favorite males, and one of the ones I've wanted to use. He's just always seemed to require some wonky technique and strategy to use.

I prefer to not use charge characters at all, though in IV I have no choice (duh). I wasn't waiting for Vega to not be a charge character anymore, but for him to not be so weird and difficult as a result, if that makes sense. It doesn't help that in IV he seemed REALLY 1-Dimensional. Like limited as hell and boring. I'll be using him seriously in V without a doubt, so long as they don't screw him up before release. It's just a bonus that he's not a charge character anymore.

You probably are or at least you probably will be cause most casual players will probably pick him up. There's always been a barrier between charge characters and motions some people avoid great characters specifically cause they find them hard to use and i believe these people are in a much larger group than the people that play them or would consider playing them (charge characters).

Well, to be fair, Necalli only has 1 charge move right? Like Chun.

One day I said "I need a main." cause I was so indecisive about who I used. My method? I picked random and got Vega, and he just stuck. I'm certainly not the best as him but I still love the guy. Although I do share the concern with the lack of charge characters in SFV. It seems we won't be getting some more until the DLC comes out. Unless Fan is one, which I doubt.

Not gonna play him simply because he is a motion character now, it just feels weird, same with Nash.

CRAYONSEED said on November 25, 2015 at 7:31 a.m.

This is why I never understand when folks say they don't get how certain characters fit in SF5 (or any game). You can keep the spirit of the character and have them play really differently.

I used to feel the same way but a good transition is to play another fighting game that has a motion character with a similar playstyle. I used glacius from ki and slayer/Axl low in gg to Bridge the gap. It doesn't have to be those two but they opened me up to playing non charge footie characters.

Necalli is a hybrid, kinda, while Chun is still charge character. Her SBK and Kikouken are still charge

VEGA IS NOT BORING OR 1-DIMENIMSIONAL.
VEGA IS LIKE A TRUE FIGHTER AND YOU , YOU ARE JUST A PLAYER.
VEGA HAVE A LOT OF COMPLEX , AMBIGUOUS INTERESTING TECHNICS FOR PEOPLE WHO KNOW THIS CHARACTER

#27
DeadlyMoves said on November 25, 2015 at 10:12 a.m.

Not even gonna try him out. Ive never liked him, he's boring and has never been fun to use. changing his moves to motion inputs isn't going to entice me.

Blancs said on November 25, 2015 at 11:40 a.m.

Takes a lot of skill to play Vega at a high level. Which is completely rare to see. People get bored easily without fireballs or dragon punches. Glad to see my main get some love since he went all but neglected in SF4.

InnerGateDeity said on November 25, 2015 at 11:41 a.m.

You're not alone. Every time I see people say "Yeah Vega is really good in the current builds" a part of wishes they'd give at least one or two of his moves charge rules again to appease people who think he's too strong, while at the same time we get the old Vega back.

Archaik said on November 25, 2015 at 11:56 a.m.

I prefer Vega as a charge character. I don't see the point in making every character a command character, character diversity is good!

#31
Dimensional said on November 25, 2015 at 1:06 p.m.

I have no issue with charge characters back when I first started playing fighters as a child I preferred charge characters and characters with mashing specials like Blanka, Chun, Honda etc because I found their specials easier to do (took me ages to learn a Hadoken and Shoryuken back in the day when their motions were not common in fighters or games).

I have never been keen on Vega though sue to his appearance, personality and playstyle maybe I will enjoy his playstyle in SFV enough to overcome my dislike for him but I doubt it and if someone else really enjoys using him well good luck to them hopefully there will be a character for everyone like most fighters.

JRXP2011 said on November 25, 2015 at 2:01 p.m.

I always like vegas design, but I've never been able to get into charge characters so I never really gave the character a chance because of that. Now that they changes his style I played him almost exclusively throughout the beta test... Awesome character!!! Going away from charge was the right move. Good Job capcom.

I've always liked Vega as a character, but his gameplay never appealed to me before 5. He's infinitely more fun and satisfying now.

msdrakegx said on November 25, 2015 at 4:11 p.m.

I for one am very excited to see Vega become a motion character. Being a motion character always means that you will be more mobile and Vega should definitely be mobile. He's a freaking Spanish ninja!

Broken_Controller said on November 25, 2015 at 4:18 p.m.

Back in the days, it was easier to do a sonic boom than a hadouken. All you had to do was hold back for 3 seconds, then forward punch.

With hadouken, everything got complicated when you wanted to learn tatsu and shoryu. Well, that was when you were a kid playing SF on the Sega Genesis.

For me charge characters have always been fun to play casually. Competitively, it's a whole new level.

Thanks for another good interview!

"I'll be happy if people who might've avoided him, thinking "I like the character and his design, but charge characters, I don't know..." start trying him out and liking him."

I'm one of those players. It's really annoying because I like quite a few charge characters (Dictator, Chun-Li, Claw) but even after all these years I have not come even close to being able to do their moves consistently. Let alone play them vs other people.

I wouldn't mind seeing Reiketsu at Capcom Cup Finals. Lovely dude.
