PR Balrog: You better learn to defend in Street Fighter 5, or you will get knocked out quickly

Evil Geniuses' Eduardo "PR Balrog" Perez was the next top player we caught up with at E3 2015 to get his early impressions of Street Fighter 5. We asked Perez if he thought the gameplay reminded him of any past Street Fighter titles.

"I think the damage is like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, in terms of wake up, it's like SF3 Third Strike, you don't really have a lot of mix ups and stuff, it's throw or meaties, so basically we're back to old Street Fighter, which I'm really happy about," he said.

"In Street Fighter 4, I started getting used to people using focus backdash, backdash and reversals, all of that stuff as defensive options, now people who are knocked down actually need to have defense, and that's what I like about Street Fighter 5," stated Perez.
I asked Eduardo if he thought there was anything that he'd like to see tweaked in the game so far, but he felt like he hadn't played enough to offer much of an opinion there, but he did note a couple of things.

"I think Cammy might be a bit too strong," he said.

"Also, there's a 'clunkyness' to some of the characters. Sometimes I don't feel like I'm actually doing a blockstring, it's a weird sensation, I don't know.

"Sometimes when I'm doing a blockstring, I go forward, but my character goes back," he said.

I suggested to him that it could be something to do with the animation frames, specifically the frame data or the recovery being longer than we're used to seeing.

"That could be the case. Combofiend was explaining it to me a little bit, and he said some of the animations look a bit clunky, but I'm pretty sure they will fix it," said Eduardo.

To wrap up our discussion, I asked Perez if he had any closing thoughts on the game, and what players should be on the lookout for.

"You guys better learn to defend — because if not — this game will kill you pretty fast. There will be rounds that will be 10 seconds long, so you need to learn to defend now."
