New Super Smash Brothers 4 stages, Roy and Ryu details, and much more

Posted by John 'Action_John' Macone • June 13, 2015 at 12:06 p.m. PDT

This morning, Ryu and Roy were both revealed through the next patch to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, causing a firestorm of excitement. One person, however, has been trudging through the new data in this patch to bring to light all that it offers, taking Twitter by storm.

This new data includes new stages, mii costumes, images of Roy and Ryu, and even their alternate colors.

Hit the jump to check out this overwhelming amount of information.

New stages

The first piece of information is about two new stages, besides the Miiverse stage.

This is Ryu's stage. Specifically, a mixture of his traditional rooftop Street Fighter 2 stage (in the foreground), and the castle that is his Third Strike stage in the background. This stage also brings with it brand new music, which will be covered later in the story. It has a walk off to the right, and some new platforms on the left.

To anyone who's played Melee or Smash 64, this stage is all too familiar. Dream Land 64 is apparently making a return, in much the same way as it was before, though undoubtedly with new music and a bit more color.
Mii Costumes

The next set of information is about some new Mii Costumes, specifically three for Mii Brawler, and one for Mii Swordfighter.

This, in my opinion, is the most interesting tidbit of information we've received. These Mii costumes, for Mii Brawler, are of Heihachi Mishima from Tekken, and Jacky and Akira from Virtua Fighter. The Akira outfit in particular goes for the visual appeal of the earlier Virtua Fighter games.

And if it isn't everyone's favorite maverick hunter. This outfit is specifically for Mii Swordfighter, based on Zero from the Megaman series of games.
Alternate colors for Ryu and Roy, and Ryu's special moves.

Also collected as an image are Ryu and Roy's alternate colors, with Ryu's ranging from traditional SF2 colors, to a couple of brand new duds.

This set of images shows off Ryu's B button (special) moves in Smash 4. Specifically, his down B which is a focus attack, his regular B being a hadouken, his side B being tatsumaki, and his up B being his shoryuken. The focus attack acts like the actual focus attack in Street Fighter 4, absorbing hits with armor during the charge animation.
All Star/Classic clear screens, and trophy images.

These photos are shown once clearing All Star mode, and Classic mode. As far as imagery from Smash is concerned, I don't think anything tops Yoshi taking out Ryu with the raging demon.

These images are the trophies obtainable in game. Besides showing us a basic and alternate model of both Roy and Ryu, they also show us their final smashes. Roy seems to be getting a brand new final smash, not to be shared with Lucina and Marth, that hits all around him. Ryu's final smash is the uppercut we all know and love, the Shin Shoryuken.
Ryu's theme, Ken's theme, and Ryu's victory jingle.

These, as stated above, are Ryu's theme and Ken's theme, freshly remixed for Smash 4. They will play on the new stage for Ryu, and also shown is Ryu's new win screen jingle, inspired by the interlude jingle from Street Fighter 2.

Although it's good to see Ryu in a Smash game, it would've been better if that news didn't get leaked. Internet can ruin things like that. But either way, it's good and if you're 1 of those people who believe that "any publicity is good publicity", then it's not that much of an issue. Wouldn't mind seeing a Tekken character in Smash, but it'll probably be Jin, Kazuya or Heihachi.

i'm excited ryu is joining, but man, this feels like snake in brawl when they basically included a character whose game is exclusive to another console.

i mean sure snake appeared in twin snakes for gamecube but that was already old when brawl came out, it was for an older system, and the latest one that has snake was a PS3 exclusive.

now ryu's latest on nintendo, ssf4 (an already older version) is on 3DS, the definitive version is all over except wii u. and upcoming newest is PS4/PC exclusive.

so basically nintendo loves to give free promotion to games that is exclusive to a non-nintendo platform, when it comes to 3rd party characters.

Might as well cross over everyone in PSASBR while we're at it!

#44
Red7 said on June 13, 2015 at 6:29 p.m.

Your theory is half right, Nintendo isn't giving the free promotion, the characters are giving Nintendo paid promotion.

That is why they only go after super iconic characters. The only character that comes close to Ryu from PSA is Kratos at best, in this regard.

ChaosxPaladin said on June 13, 2015 at 7:22 p.m.

Thinking about it now, we better be able to FADC with Ryu. How cool would that be?!

I am surprised Nintendo didn't think of giving Ryu the colors of the other Shotos:

Red gi, yellow headband: Ken color
Black/Blue gi, red hadband: Akuma color
Pink gi, brown headband: Dan color
Yellow gi, brown headband: Sean color
Gray gi, white headband: Gouken color

SirRetro08 said on June 13, 2015 at 9:26 p.m.

Snake was added in Brawl because Kojima wanted him in Melee originally, but it was too far in development. When Brawl was in the works, Kojima pitched in again, early enough to have him be added.

I didn't know I wanted this. When I first heard about the Ryu in Smash rumors, I shrugged. But now that I see it I need to have it. I wasn't going to get a Wii U until a new Metroid or Zelda came out. Now I'm getting one this month.
