Updated: Omega Mode is meant to be fun, not balanced; update v1.04 inbound, fixes unintentional nerfs and PC online issues

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • September 20, 2014 at 8:48 a.m. PDT

Updated: Combofiend posted his latest blog entry over on Capcom Unity which divulges more information on the upcoming Omega Mode in Ultra Street Fighter 4. According to the Capcom representative, this new mode has a much heavier emphasis on fun than it does balance. The development team mainly focused on making all 44 characters feel new.

The upcoming game mode will be playable online, but only in an non-ranked setting. We can expect more information on Omega Mode as it surfaces.

This blog entry also states that a new patch is heading our way in October. The v1.04 update will fix the unintentional nerfs made to Decapre, Rolento, and Cody in the previous update, and will also add a Delayed Wake Up option to training mode. Additionally, a number of PC online connectivity issue fixes are being made, such as players receiving pings mid-match, causing slowdown.

A full breakdown for the v1.04 patch will be unveiled closer to the update's release.

Earlier: Over at Tokyo Game Show 2014 tonight, Capcom announced a new game mode set to be added to Ultra Street Fighter 4. This fresh content is called "Omega Mode."

In Omega Mode, characters gain access to a wide array of new, crazy special moves and changes. Ken can shoot fireballs from a kick special move, Guile throws three Sonic Booms in succession for 7 hits, and much more.

Very cool, that makes all characters like new ones, hope you can online play with these

BUT

most of the new moves are like normal combos, reminds me of these sfxtk like automatic combos (blue gem i think) its a little random

but doesnt matter.you all saw guile is remy in omega? VERY cool, i hope he gets a remy costume :)

Gotta love how that Ken EX Tatsu rising upwards into the kick that sends abel down is the lovked away data left out in SF4's code which was featured a few weeks ago. Needless to say, this is gonna be AWESOME!

Most of SF2's animations looked odd in the first place, so can't really blame them.

#33
CaptainPlanet said on September 20, 2014 at 1:10 a.m.

Surprised they made a new mode while the latest one (still quite new) isn't finished. I'm talking about the trials and above all the lag offline and online. I was waiting for that patch since day one. The Omega mode looks cool though, but I just don't understand their way of working and decision-making.

#35
shekeib said on September 20, 2014 at 1:12 a.m.

i think some of the moves are ideas that they took out, like deleted scenes in a movie. Some dude found that ken ex shippu on the PC files, so I'm guessing that most characters have this stuff and they're just putting it all in. Thats probably why the animations don't look flushed out.

#36
Vezina said on September 20, 2014 at 1:13 a.m.

they also announced a patch.

#37
Urdojo said on September 20, 2014 at 1:14 a.m.

I see they had some free time to fix bugs.

#38
Smorgasboard said on September 20, 2014 at 1:14 a.m.

There is a very obvious answer to why Capcom created this mode which is that this is a public test for a faster and more complex gameplay which they may end up doing for Street Fighter V.

SF4 Omega is actually an Alpha test for SF5!

If omega mode can be available online then it's possible edition select will be as well. Although, one does wonder why would anyone pick anything other than Omega edition other than to handicap themselves.

SnakeX said on September 20, 2014 at 1:21 a.m.

According to Combofiend's latest blog post, there's a patch coming along with Omega Mode: http://www.capcom-unity.com/combofien...

The accidental nerfs to Rolento and Decapre from the last patch are being reverted, and Cody is getting a fix to his light Ruffian Kick so that it causes a hard knockdown when hitting airborne opponents again like it used to. PC version is getting some connectivity fixes on top of that.

More fixes "to be disclosed at a later date" as well.

#52
FightDirty said on September 20, 2014 at 1:30 a.m.

OK, now they have my attention. Maybe we'll see more of this at Capcom Cup.

#53
TheArchangel said on September 20, 2014 at 1:31 a.m.

That's the first thing I said to myself as soon as I saw the announcement. It's a disgrace that they don't even give us updates about what they're doing - if they're doing anything at all - to fix the gangraped netcode of PC.

#54
ADB999666333 said on September 20, 2014 at 1:32 a.m.

Looks awesome, I've always wanted a muck around version of SF4. The only thing that would make it truly excellent is to put in parries (hint, hint)

#55
GiganV3 said on September 20, 2014 at 1:33 a.m.

Apparently, PC is getting fixes as well.

This.

If only they'd stop crying and whining long enough to read.

#58
AugustAPC said on September 20, 2014 at 1:39 a.m.

This won't divide anything. People will use it to screw around with. No one's gonna stick to it.

Edit: Yea... the animations look mad ghetto. You can tell they're just rushed edits of unused and existing resources. Shouldn't really expect anything more, though.

#59
werewolfgold said on September 20, 2014 at 1:44 a.m.

Shenanigans mode? I might actually pick up USF4 now. lol

#60
noob_blasta said on September 20, 2014 at 1:46 a.m.

Sweet. Completely agree with smorgasbord. I think this is the first foray into sfv. Pretty sure we will see some of these moves end up as permanent moves for some of the cast in the same way as red fireballs, burning dragon punch and teleport all ended up as regular specials.

#61
LavellUp said on September 20, 2014 at 1:48 a.m.

looks like the PC mods that are already out

#62
Roy_Arkon said on September 20, 2014 at 1:50 a.m.

Ok, so it's a free DLC that freshes up the entire cast of USF4. That is great and all, although that if Capcom can have a set of ideas for new moves, wouldn't be easier to save them for SF5, instead of updating SF4 again? That's my take on it, at least.

#63
God_Demon said on September 20, 2014 at 1:53 a.m.

Are you blind? Or did you just read the article title without actually reading the article and wrote your comment? This is a new extra mode similar to edition select. It will have it's own unranked online play as well. This isn't an update changing the main game of SF4. Just a fun, free mode to screw around in.

#77
Roy_Arkon said on September 20, 2014 at 2:39 a.m.

Yes I did read the article. The thing is that Capcom had so many new moves, so why adding this new mode, while they could've keep those moves for an SF sequal like SF5? And it's not an update like from SSF4:AE to USF4, but it still something that can change the metagame, unless it's confirmed that it won't be seen in tournament play.

And for the record, the edition select is also not that good, it kills the balance in the game, after Capcom said that USF4 will be all about balance.

As someone has already suggested. its probably a sneaky way of testing ideas for SF5 with the current community.

It as also been confirmed that it wont be standard for tournaments. Who's to say if anyone will do side events in this mode? but tourney standard will remain. Engage brain ;)
