Most popular game at CEO 2014? Check out the entrance numbers for this year's lineup

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • June 28, 2014 at 9:52 p.m. PDT

CEO has emerged as one of the largest fighting game events in the community, and many people are curious how the entrance numbers for the top games in the lineup shook out.

As luck would have it, the main man behind CEO, Alex Jebailey, dished out that information recently, telling how USF4, UMvC3, Smash, Injustice and other games broke down for competitors.

If you're curious which game(s) drew the biggest number of players, check out the info below.

Numbers for Saturday Games at CEO 2014

1. Ultra Street Fighter 4 - 391
2. Super Smash Bros. Melee - 262
3. Project M - 255
4. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 236
5. Injustice: Gods Among Us - 95
6. BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma -76
7. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 - 72
8. Dive Kick - 54
9. Killer Instinct- 49

Overall attendance and spectator numbers were also very impressive, as a ton of people showed up again this year. Source: Alex Jebailey's Twitter.

So what's going on with the KI community? Why are those numbers so pitiful for a game that's still fairly new?

XxUltimacloudxX said on June 28, 2014 at 9:59 p.m.

thats simple its called XBOX 1 its very expensive not everyone has the money to buy that also some players decided to buy a ps4 or wii u instead.

tortonon said on June 28, 2014 at 10:01 p.m.

Micro$oft, making the 49-player game get stream time while the 236 goes to waste.

Marvel's indeed dead.

Thanks KI for killing the hype. Would have loved to see that Ultra SF4 Royal Rumble.

Guilty Gear is going to trounce pretty much everything but sf4

HyperCombinationFinish said on June 28, 2014 at 10:22 p.m.

No surprises here really. Kinda surprised that divekick beat KI but not shocked.

Lockm said on June 28, 2014 at 10:23 p.m.

One of the reasons is also because it's cross platform. Load and loads of people have a ps3, that alone will make sure alot more people will play GGXrd than KI.

xShonuffx said on June 28, 2014 at 10:23 p.m.

Can we freakin cool it with the KI hate. Every game on here has been on 3 or more platforms and has a established fan base. KI is only on Xbox One and is less than a year old. Those are some unfair comparisons.

I also don't understand the KI hate. People need to grow up.

triplethreat99 said on June 28, 2014 at 10:25 p.m.

Smash is in there!

JohnSweirlz said on June 28, 2014 at 10:30 p.m.

I know the numbers are definitely low, but where are SC5 and P4A? They had enough players to have a grand finals for both games, so there should be some numbers.

diddykv said on June 28, 2014 at 10:30 p.m.

It seems more like Microsoft hate.

ProfessorLester said on June 28, 2014 at 10:37 p.m.

but how hype was top 8 of KI pure gold

zombiebrian said on June 28, 2014 at 10:39 p.m.

Im glad were now at the stage where there is a dedicated stream for usf4 now. So much of the community is made up of people who play that game before we were just getting a handful of pool matches.

These numbers are indeed interesting Smash is really gaining momentum if they get that new game right it will be interesting to how that works out.

KI is on a console with not a huge early adoption rate so i can see why that would struggle. TTT2 is a bit of a shock to see that game so low numbers wise

DunnDeal said on June 28, 2014 at 10:43 p.m.

Well the character selection isn't very big on KI, that's why I haven't played it in over a month. I probably won't pick the game back up again until season 2 comes out becuase online is nothing but Jago and Sabre.

Love the game but it gets boring.

shano said on June 28, 2014 at 11:04 p.m.

Well the game is also coming to PS3 so yeah lots of people will be playing it.

sdstig said on June 28, 2014 at 11:07 p.m.

I feel like if KI was on the Sony platforms and PC or even just on the 360 as well then the numbers would double.

I've always hated that exclusives exist in this day and age and always will. I understand why they do from a business perspective but that doesn't mean I or any other gamer has to like it. With the exception of indie games from small companies but then again, even games like Divekick and Limbo are on multiple platforms.

X_Cel said on June 28, 2014 at 11:30 p.m.

The numbers would definitely increase alot more for KI if they put the game on PC at the very least.

I absolutely will not buy Xbox One for KI when it only runs at 720P.

If the game ever comes to PC, I'll gladly pay full retail as long as it runs 1080P with good netcode.

RandomJohn said on June 28, 2014 at 11:50 p.m.

I'm not surprised KI is at the bottom. The game is just not like before. Microsoft tried to make KI into a different game by deviating it from KI2. I personally did not like the deviation especially the appearance of each character. The new KI is like SF EX series

HyperViperNZ said on June 28, 2014 at 11:51 p.m.

As expected, USF4 is obviously the most popular fighting game around.
I'm surprised about KI having so little entrants though. The game is amazing and fresh.

Ricecore said on June 28, 2014 at 11:52 p.m.

richard713 said on June 29, 2014 at 12:02 a.m.

there're no numbers of KOF P4A SC5 so I don't know if KI is lower.

29once said on June 29, 2014 at 12:11 a.m.

I haven't even played the game, but seeing those KI numbers makes me sad. It's a game I enjoy watching.
Maybe Microsoft should consider doing a PC port for season 2?

Marvel is still going strong in the states, but it is dead everywhere else in the world. I wish Capcom made a new "versus" type of game with all of their characters.

TrueGamingGuru said on June 29, 2014 at 12:15 a.m.

TTT2 having a bit of low numbers shouldn't be too much of a surprise, since TTT2 just doesn't have enough players or the support to keep tournaments going along with becoming one of the biggest fighting games even to the point of shutting WTF service down. Despite if this game is considered one of the best, that is not going to make gamers just jump right to the game or they'll just stick to the games their better at playing even if its every 2D fighter game to exist.

If there was enough dedication & support this would still have a couple of tournaments, even increasing the player base is something that the Tekken Team needs to look into. Look at Team Ninja with DOA5U, its player base has been growing as of recent from the free to play version & the Arcade releases in Japan even Team Ninja makes advertisements about weekly tournaments or special events. DOA5U isn't going to make huge numbers along with TTT2, but DOA5U has enough passion & support to keep the community going. If TTT2 manages to have enough passionate & supportive players, then it has good chance of increasing.

The only time KI would ever set foot on Sony platforms is if Rare was sold to Activision which completely backfired. But part of KI launch was mostly to have a variety of launch titles for Xbox One along with showing off Xbox One's capability which console companies are likely to do that with their IP, and Ken Lobb been wanting to work on Killer Instinct which project just couldn't move on until Microsoft renewal the trademark & began development. When it comes to exclusives, its almost going to be similar to past games when certain companies decide to make that game completely exclusive to one console. (kinda similar to Tekken, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Dead or Alive etc.) Its something that will never change as long as Sony & Microsoft still stands.

ThinkJurgen said on June 29, 2014 at 12:36 a.m.

No one is paying attention to the gap between Marvel and Injustice? The numbers double. Players aren't the only ones competing. Creating a fighting game and making it popular seems to be more challenging than playing the game haha

RYU81 said on June 29, 2014 at 12:53 a.m.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 12:58 a.m.

Blazblue Chrono Phantasma -> Only on PS3 and Vita
Project M -> Fan made mod of a game only on Wii.
Smash Bros Melee -> Only on gamecube
USF4 -> Only on PS3 and Xbox 360 atm. Not on PC or WiiU or PS4 or Xbone.

HyperCombinationFinish said on June 29, 2014 at 1:39 a.m.

KI fans complaining about only being on one system. Lol. Smash community is on a system so old they need crts to play. No Johns. Kappa

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 1:53 a.m.

BBCP established fanbase and on a console with a much larger install base. I own ever BB game by the way.
Project M still a smash Bros game with an established fanbase and making the transition really isn't that hard so I'm assuming a lot of the same people who signed up for Melee also signed up for Project M.
Melee as I mentioned an established fanbase and pronaly the most popular franchise of all the games on that list.
USFIV on two consoles that have a much larger install base and easily a more established franchise I don't even know why you brought this one up.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 1:57 a.m.

No ones complaining but it's a valid point up until recently the X1 was 499 and it was released less than a year ago. The smash Bros franchise is more popular then all those other games and smash bros transcends the FGC. I'm In such shock to see a poll like this and fanboys comments. I totally didn't see that happening on EH's.

even worse while that was happening there was nothing on the funkyp stream. could have easily moved KI to funkyp and stream royal rumble on ceogaming

kabal31082 said on June 29, 2014 at 6:01 a.m.

I think everyone is making a bigger deal about KI than it is. 1) this was easy coast and I don't think your going to see a lot of the newer FGC players that have gotten into the scene because of KI. 2) Ultr Street Fighter 4 was just released and I think it may have leached some of the pro players back for KI for the time being. I've noticed CD JR is back into it, maining Juri.

Also for comparison CEO had a total of 1,490 total participants across all games, EVO 2013 on the other hand had 6,142. And it's pretty much a comparable line-up. Dropping Project M, Tekken Tag and Dive Kick for King of Fighters. I'm sure the number of KI entries we'll see at Evo this year will be much higher.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:08 a.m.

No it isn't just because it had only 2 games before the third one was released doesn't mean it's an established franchise. There was no real fanbase for KI because people had too wait so long for the third one to be released. Have some common sense if it was an established franchise don't you think we would've got a sequel sooner?

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:09 a.m.

He's right it's not.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:14 a.m.

It was me responding to his comment and how am I a hater it's true? As a fighting game fan what does the PS4 currently offer? I'm buying a PS4 but I'm currently enjoying the hell out of KI which in my opinion the best current gen game in any console especially if your a fighting game fan. Now what?

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:20 a.m.

Are you slow? How many times can you someone mention valid reasons for the lack of numbers? That's like me saying the Microsoft /KI haters are do vocal yet they probably have never played the game and only own a somy console.

JELIFISH19 said on June 29, 2014 at 6:27 a.m.

I don't see why people think GG will make a dent in anything. ASW games were never that popular. They make great games but they're pretty niche in the genre.

likewoah said on June 29, 2014 at 6:31 a.m.

Well, well, well....

Surprise, surprise...

KOF had even less entrants (39). That's probably why it wasn't even listed. Unlike KI, KOF is at least 4 years old, and was released on ALL previous-gen consoles AND PC.

= 39

And people were complaining about KI?

I really hope no one bashing KI in this thread were KOF fans.

kabal31082 said on June 29, 2014 at 6:33 a.m.

That's not a bad thing that KI plays like SF. IMO I think it's a much better game all around. From the controls, input timing and the combo system. It is easy and forgiving enough for newcomers to get into and yet still deep enough for the pros. The majority of the moves and combos also don't require overly complicated inputs or 1-frame links.

KI is the direction SF really should go with the next game. Simplify the command inputs, increase the speed of the game (maybe not to the same level of KI, but maybe more compatible to say SF3) and make the input windows more forgiving for stuff like linkers. That is what SF is going to have to do to compete with new fighting games IMO.

Eternal said on June 29, 2014 at 6:35 a.m.

Did you ever think "Maybe because there were licensing issues"

Rare made Killer Instinct 1 and 2, there were licensing issues with Nintendo that had to be dealt with before hand. Not only that but there had been several attempts to bring KI back that ALMOST made it to fruition. Keep in mind that in the minds of most AAA developers fighting games were a dead genre from around 2001->2009. It's only been in the last 5 years FGs have come back into popularity(heavily thanks to SF4's name brand recognition coupled with improved online capabilities allowing for online multiplayer to become viable).

Just because there is a long period of time between games doesn't mean it's not an established franchise. The time between SF3 3rd Strike and SF4 was 10 years. Does that mean Street Fighter isn't an established franchise?

Kairosbland said on June 29, 2014 at 6:35 a.m.

Calls everyone fanboys while defending and arguing with anyone who disagrees with hi lmao GG

likewoah said on June 29, 2014 at 6:38 a.m.

So, for the people bashing KI...

What's KOF's excuse?

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:38 a.m.

Exactly the KI/Microsoft haters are acting as if a million people entered CEO. At the end of the day what really matters is KI is selling well on X1 and to the point where more content is being released. I know of very few people who have played the new KI and didn't care for it. It really is that good and fun to play. Even I was somewhat skeptical at first but around launch being a fighting game fan I went with the console that was going to have a fighting game for it.

I've heard people tell me that they have both consoles but there PS4 currently collects dust because there's nothing currently worth investing time to keep playing on it. I think the PS4 is the better console and I wish KI was an PS4 exclusive if it had to be an exclusive however that's not the case. I play all my fighting games on a PS console and I prefer to play fighting games on a PS console. That being said I'm no console loyalist and some of you that are who haven't even played the game are truly missing out on a game that's super fun to play.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:40 a.m.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:44 a.m.

kabal31082 said on June 29, 2014 at 6:48 a.m.

Also to add to my point as well, KI is pretty much just a north american fighter at the moment. The system isn't even available in most Asian countries yet. I'd be curious to see how many of the top Asian players would actually make the jump once the XBO system is available over there.

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 6:52 a.m.

Exactly but Japanese players in general tend to stick with there own fighting games just like consoles.

Kairosbland said on June 29, 2014 at 7 a.m.

nah bro i'm saying it's a bit hypocritical to call people "Fanboys" for saying something about a game (though there are one or two apparent sony fanboys) and then going to every comment that disagrees and replying to defend said game

also a bit hypocritical to call me a dummy and not know the difference between "their" and "there"

Kairosbland said on June 29, 2014 at 7:05 a.m.

older game players outside of japan don't know how to support their scene after the first few months

TheTHCGamer said on June 29, 2014 at 7:11 a.m.

It's not that simple when are arcades here in America started dying out so did the popularity of fighting games. KI was an american made fighting game which means they couldn't have made and have it sell well in other countries like Japan where fighting games were still popular. If the genre was dead (your words not mine) then how the hell was it going to make a profit but better yet how is KI an established franchise when the sequel was released so soon after the original? To me it sounds like the developers and publisher were just riding the wave of fighting game popularity.

KI had no real strong fanbase and just look at Darkstalkers. There weren't any licensing issues but CAPCOM hasn't released a sequel because it does to seem viable enough for them to do so. I'm sorry but two sequels so close between releases during a time when a genre was really popular doesn't make KI an established franchise. You also forget KI was released on N64 where it sold very poorly even for an N64 game because as you stated fighting games where pretty much dead at the time here in the states. The only reason KI got made now was because fighting games made a small comeback outside of Asia.

SF was a horrible example do you know how many SF games got released over the years and CAPCOM had there Japanese fanbase to fall back on. SF is a truly established franchise as far as fighting games go it out fighting games where they are today and there'd be no fighting games without SF. Once again horrible comparison.
