Rate moves and share tips with our revamped guides - coming soon to EventHubs

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • August 2, 2014 at 9:44 p.m. PDT
We're very happy to announce our next major site feature here on EventHubs, revamped guides/move listings for every game.

One of the biggest problems we have with writing guide content is often by the time it's finished — it's already outdated.

Technology moves SUPER fast in the FGC, and as such, we wanted to give the scene the tools to keep up with the ever changing world of competitive fighting games. Check out this preview image of our new move index pages.

Click image to see preview of the new section

We've made it so all user-submitted tips can be rated, so that the most helpful information floats to the top.

Feature rundown for revamped move listings on EventHubs

• The ability to rate every move.
• User-submitted tips sorted by quality.
• Mirror inputs depending if you're on the 2P side.
• Toggle inputs to show the buttons for the PS3, 360, etc.
• More features we'll be announcing soon...

This is just the index page, so if you click a move name, you'll see properties and more information as well.

You might wonder where combos and frame data are located at, and we have very special plans for both of these sets of data we'll be revealing in the future.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments.

It'll be like tier voting again. I love 3rd Strike stuff. Can't wait

Existent said on August 2, 2014 at 9:51 p.m.

I think a rating system is the best option for this kind of index.

Will we have character guides on other games ? Or just Street Fighter IV ? 'Cuz I Always thought that was bulls***.

HiryuMK said on August 2, 2014 at 9:58 p.m.

Sound great! I always had to go in the forum since the guides in there are more up-to-date.

Does that mean the color page will be updated too? I see some characters still have only colors for their default and alternate 1 costumes but not the costumes after.

Catalyst said on August 2, 2014 at 9:59 p.m.

We actually have guides for other games, like TvC, UMvC3, etc.

With this, the focus will be on the community writing the tips though.

Our tip system is killer, sorting information by the most helpful and letting the community vote on what they think is useful info.

Instead of having to wait for us to write guides, users can start submitting tips for their character(s) or specific moves the moment the sections go live.

Even the admins will be submitting tips for their mains.

Yung said on August 2, 2014 at 10:02 p.m.

Oh, that's great, I can't wait ! Good job, EH crew.

Catalyst said on August 2, 2014 at 10:03 p.m.

Tips can be written about the character, or each one of their individual moves.

For example, if you want to write how best to utilize Ms. Fortune's Cat Scratch in Skullgirls, you can head right into that section and give people the skinny.

If people like what you write, they'll up vote your tip, and it'll be the first one people see when looking at the section.

Catalyst said on August 2, 2014 at 10:06 p.m.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone.

We're really jazzed about this new addition. It's fairly different than our current stuff, but we've created it to address specific weaknesses in our old approaches.

We think this is going to be an excellent way to learn about characters and their new tactics in an easy way.

Amazing, i think i have found yet another feature i love about this website :)

Looking fwd to this one its a really good innovation should spark some interesting discussions

MFVoltron said on August 2, 2014 at 10:12 p.m.

Goddamn!!! This is just incredible in virtually every regard!!!!!

The fact that it so helpful and so damn flexible for both newcomers AND the experienced just makes this so disgustingly beautiful!!

unseenpotential01 said on August 2, 2014 at 10:19 p.m.

Great idea guys! I've been wondering when we would be able to update that segment of Ehubs. It'll be interesting to see what new tips other players have that no one knows about.

Jake_da_Thrilla said on August 2, 2014 at 10:29 p.m.

This is a fantastic idea. Older games that may have fallen by the wayside (SoulCalibur 5 and the Darkstalkers series) can get some in-depth reporting ala Ultra Street Fighter 4.

ThinkJurgen said on August 2, 2014 at 10:35 p.m.

I'm really liking the steps this website has been taking to improve the FGC. I can't wait to see how it all turns out. Keep it up guys.

Also, would you be able to create a yearly calendar for majors? I know that exact dates aren't given that far in advance, but the major tournaments are usually held within the same month as the year before. It would also be able to help keep up with tournament placings and maybe even entrant numbers.

Smart. Looking forward to contributing some dhalsim knowledge and learning a few things myself

Catalyst said on August 2, 2014 at 10:41 p.m.

That's a good idea. ;) Stay tuned.

Wintry said on August 2, 2014 at 10:56 p.m.

Dang, EventHubs getting fancy.

When can we expect this to be up?

Catalyst said on August 2, 2014 at 11:47 p.m.

We're constantly working on this right at this very moment.

We don't have an ETA yet, but I'd say the launch with USF4's moves is not too far off. Other games will follow is fairly quick fashion, like we did with tiers.

Generally when we officially announce something, it's on the near horizon.

Those seeking to know learn Viper I have a few tips...

- Mash burn kicks

- Always wake up with something

- Go crazy

Hope this helps!

USF4 said on August 3, 2014 at 12:37 a.m.

I suggest you add screenshots of each special. I don't remember names of every special.

Wintry said on August 3, 2014 at 12:42 a.m.

I'm looking forward to it. There's a lot of things if like to improve on, so learning some tips from others is gonna be a major chance to step my Dudley game up. I guess there's a few things that I can think of too that might help.

Can't wait Ehubs crew!

looking forward to it

PlasmaWaffle said on August 3, 2014 at 1:53 a.m.

Love it... would be nice if this and Tiers eventually came to the iOS app as well!

slickn4 said on August 3, 2014 at 2:57 a.m.

Will there be versions for Skullgirls, UNIEL and/or Guilty Gear? Also I'd like to note that individual moves don't take into account block strings, option selects (which are very much present in SFIV which I think is safe to assume is the first game you're rolling this out for) and set-ups. It wouldn't take into account move chains either. What it would be good for is frame data, hitboxes and ambiguous cross-ups.

Ultimately I think the absolute best thing that this system could be used for, if implemented, which would not be easy, is being able to click [Makoto st.MP] and [Ryu st.FP] picking range offsets [+13 pixels away from furthest neutral standing hitbox] and timing offsets [Makoto -2] to see who wins footsie exchanges.

Looking forward to submitting input for Dudley and Dan.

Spabobin said on August 3, 2014 at 6:48 a.m.

Looks pretty good, here are my suggestions for what could be improved:

The section with the normal moves being organized by rating looks really off to me. That would make it really annoying to find the specific move you are looking for.

At the very least there should be an option to sort it normally (like how it is normally organized in frame data charts) and by rating (so you can see what a character's most important tools are). If it's not already an option, maybe make it so that you can click a move in the frame data chart and be directed to the tips page for that move.

If you click on the special moves, does it still show its damage/stun/armor break/frame data? Or is that info only going to be on the frame data chart?

As for the special move names, I think that the actual in-game move names should be used (i.e. Hadoken, Shoryuken, Tatsumaki Senpyukaku). If any additional clarification is needed, then put the common nickname in parenthesis next to or underneath the move name. For example, Ibuki has a bunch of moves with Japanese names, so you could display something like "Kasumi Gake [Command Dash].

Otherwise you get dumb move names like Ibuki's "penguin kick" or Sakura's "frog splash" (yes I have actually seen people say that). My favorite unofficial move name I've heard is Dante's "Chill Stone" (supposed to be Air Play lol)

Supers and Ultras should also have the move names listed IMO. And maybe add Ultra Combo W to the list as well so it can be rated by usefulness for the character.

Those are my thoughts for now.

Would be great to see a simar comment rating system for your article responses. Let the good comments rise to the surface, and the trolls sink to the deep.

Yisandra said on August 3, 2014 at 7:20 a.m.

I wish you did this screenshot with the stupid ads all over the place ahah.
On topic, what do you compare those moves to ? For hado/dp, you can compare it to other hado/dp, but for let's say viper's seismo ? How can you judge if the move is 5/10 or 9/10 ?

sagejonathan said on August 3, 2014 at 7:56 a.m.

Looks awesome. can't wait to share and learn.

Virtua_Kazama said on August 3, 2014 at 8:32 a.m.

That's pretty awesome!

Dedemaru said on August 3, 2014 at 9:52 a.m.

God am I erect. This site just keeps getting better and better.

Catalyst said on August 3, 2014 at 2:08 p.m.

This is just the index page, clicking on a move leads you to more information like alternative names (the Japanese ones and such) and properties, like if it has invincibility, juggle potential, breaks armor, etc.

Right now frame data isn't included — yet, we're still building out that aspect, but it will be in the future, along with a few more bells and whistles.
