It has been quite some time since PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale made headlines, but today we've got some news for you. In honor of the upcoming balance patch that Sony Santa Monica will be releasing for the game, the Level Up crew will launch the PSABR Spring tournament series.

Running from April 10 - June 26, the Spring tournament series will be taking place every Thursday night at Level Up's weekly event, The Runback. Competitors will have the opportunity to win various Sony games and merchandise, but two lucky winners will walk away with a PlayStation 4 console.

The Spring season winner will be awarded with a PS4 console, and another PS4 will be given to the player with the most tournament entries, who will become known as the "Most Dedicated Player". Hit the image below for the info.

What's in the patch?

Wow great, I'll be watching. I wish I could enter.

hazelnut1112 said on April 2, 2014 at 2:42 p.m.

Sounds great, game is so damn simple to play and I would love me to get a PS4. Sadly, transportation will be a problem since the car I drive isn't working anymore.

*looks at calender*

April fools was yesterday.

C'mon eventhubs, do you even eventhubs?

Demonix said on April 2, 2014 at 2:53 p.m.

Do they even realize how unbalanced this game is?

looks like i took my week off just in time, man wish could go

NoizyChild said on April 2, 2014 at 2:56 p.m.

So 5-10 people will have a chance to win a PS4. Good deal.

SnakeX said on April 2, 2014 at 2:58 p.m.

Do you realize that maybe that's why there's a patch being released for it?

danistheman said on April 2, 2014 at 2:59 p.m.

People still play this? Wow.

Demonix said on April 2, 2014 at 3 p.m.

How do we know this patch will be out by then?

EDIT - Really gotta learn to read better. Looks like the patch will be out be then. But still, what if it's still unbalanced. Kratos, Raiden, and Kat are pretty OP in this game.

old_school_rival said on April 2, 2014 at 3:07 p.m.

I thought they shelved the patch it's been so long since they announced it. I'll definitely give it some time post patch.

Quezacoatl said on April 2, 2014 at 3:12 p.m.

Then I guess a player who uses one of those 3 OP chars will win a PS4. Top tier chars winning tournaments, what else is new?

Paradonyx said on April 2, 2014 at 3:13 p.m.

inb4 someone starts defending this game and dismisses everyone's "negative" opinion, even though this game has:
-a poor, let's-ignore-the-fans roster
-HUGE imbalances
-Game-breaking lvl 3s which in some cases gurantee unescapable kills
-a mediocre K.O. system(opinion)

Now, I'm all for giving this game a chance(again), and even though I find it extremely lackluster, there ARE some people who like this game. Just a precaution, since we're all waiting for that one guy to go off on everyone who doesn't like PSATBR.

SpiderUppercut said on April 2, 2014 at 3:28 p.m.

Who cares about balance

The question you should be asking is 'Is the game fun?'

Devdan said on April 2, 2014 at 3:31 p.m.

The answer is "no".

RunnersKnee said on April 2, 2014 at 3:35 p.m.

Is it 1v1 or 2v2?
The game needs an overhaul, not a patch.
Especially since it(the patch) has been announced for almost a year or two ago.
Still gonna try and watch

JesseRobles said on April 2, 2014 at 3:40 p.m.

Pick Dante, Raiden or Kratos for a free PS4.

SpiderUppercut said on April 2, 2014 at 3:47 p.m.

I'm not so sure about that!

SF4 AE 2012 has proved to be a horrible imbalanced Cammy-fest mess these last few months.

As both the tier lists and tournament results have proven.
People still find it fun though, for whatever reason.

J said on April 2, 2014 at 3:52 p.m.

What a coincidence, I just picked this game up 2 days ago.
Looking forward to watching this.

error3 said on April 2, 2014 at 3:55 p.m.

Game needs more a balance patch. The game mechanics are flawed. Fun game though.

Taizuku said on April 2, 2014 at 4:44 p.m.

Interesting. This game was meant to be played 2v2 it feels like, yet at the same time it plays like it wanted to be a 2D fighter.

Xykes said on April 2, 2014 at 4:45 p.m.

Oh, are you REALLY trying?

If you were REALLY trying, you wouldn't have posted any thing.

TrueGamingGuru said on April 2, 2014 at 5:28 p.m.

Here is the thing about the game's problems...

"a poor, let's-ignore-the-fans roster": Its not that developers even ignore the fans, part of Superbot's goal was to include as much characters as they can from launch to DLC, which are characters from the past to future. The real problem isn't the game itself, its other IP holder/company/creator that could make things impossible.

Most people would want either Crash, Spyro, Cloud, Wander, Lara Croft etc. what makes it impossible to fulfill fan request is Activision (Crash & Spyro), Square Enix (plus Disney for Sora), even Hideo Kojima didn't like the idea too much of both Raiden & Snake fighting each other (meaning one Metal Gear character at a time), Crystal Dynamics just couldn't accept Lara Croft in the game at the time since the developers didn't want to spoil the new Tomb Raider game (which wasn't available at the time), and Team Ico wanted nothing to do with the game itself since they consider their characters as art and doesn't want crossover like this one to meddle with their art style. Besides part of Playstation fanbase can be very conflicting due to people's personal interest (when it comes to different games), and Playstation doesn't always have a very strong variety when it comes to first party games. (its not even as strong as Nintendo)

The game could've had more roster if Superbot was still there making more DLC characters, but what really sealed the coffin was that Sony cut ties with Superbot & Santa Monica Studios didn't make any more content, (they only finished part of Superbot's work for Zeus & Isaac, which were bound to happen anyway with or without Dart & Abe) and pre-maturely cancelled DLC content.

"HUGE imbalances": I can at least agree, since part of the game has very unfair advantage when it comes to character balance. This was something that could've easily been fixed or if a sequel can improve from the previous game.

"a mediocre K.O. system": To be quite honest, it really isn't that bad. It isn't perfect, besides this is the first game and not everything is going to be best in a quick instance. (kinda like SF1) Its one of these things to really get use to and adds a bit of strategy/mind games.

The game didn't do its best, but its just starting out I think if there were to be a sequel there can be chances where that sequel can do better than the first game. Maybe things can be a lot better, but who knows. (if Sony ever consider revisiting PSASBR)

No reason will ever be good enough for why Raziel wasn't in the game. I would have bought a PS3 to play as Raziel in a fighting game.

TrueGamingGuru said on April 2, 2014 at 6:04 p.m.

For people who are wondering what this up coming balance patch is here are the details from the Playstation Community & Santa Monica Studios Team...

Balance Patch: This is still in the early stages of research and development. Even if everything goes smoothly with the development and implementation, the patch will not be finished until later this fall. In particular, we’re assessing all character strengths, weaknesses, and functionality for adjustment considerations in this patch. We have been monitoring your feedback in the forums, and will continue to follow your thoughts throughout the process.

Zeus + Isaac's third costumes will also be made available free. This will require some back-end work, and so these two costumes will go live with the balance patch release later this fall. When they are released, these costumes will also be free for everyone to download from the PlayStation Store.

Monthly Tournament Leaderboard Resets: We are aggressively looking into the issue of title belts not being correctly appropriated to some people based on their seasonal performance. We do not have a fix at this time, but will keep you posted on our progress. In the interim, starting today, we are resetting the overall leaderboards, and will continue this on a monthly basis. Monthly seasons are back! Along with this effort we are going to establish a set of community activities that will be communicated on the official All-Stars forums, designed to recognize the top monthly competitors.

This no April Fools Joke, this patch was planned for quite awhile but has been delayed due to specific reasons.

On Topic: It is pretty good to see Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale appearing in the tournaments scenes, I do cheer for the PSASBR Community to keep on growing for Tournaments & for a possible sequel.

admin45 said on April 2, 2014 at 7:21 p.m.

I believe this game has a good chance being successful in it's next installment... all depending if Sony wants to follow through with a sequel.

They'res definitely room for improvements dealing with PSASBR, and I agree that Sony needs to negotiate better deals with the IP holder to Obtain 3 party characters that people want. The two companies being Square Enix(Cloud & Lara), Activision(Crash & Spyro), and I'm sure Kojima wouldn't have a problem allowing snake to be in the sequel. Since Sony doesn't have a wide selection of popular characters, it's vital that they get there hands on popular 3rd party characters to help make the roster stronger.

They probably have to re-brand this game to attract more audience into playing the game. So maybe some change to the overall look, or even changing the name to something smaller... let's be honest Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is a mouth full lol

Last but not least the mechanics! I really don't have much to suggest since it wasn't a huge issue for me, but perhaps exploring more options to the mechanics. What if the game were to have two modes, one being the (Super system), and the other using the (health percentage & knockout ring) like smash bros... it'll give the old & new fans the taste of both worlds. Then of course the game may not be that much combo heavily like the first one, but that's not necessary a bad thing since it may be more easy to balance out. Just throwing some idea's around.

BlackMasamune said on April 2, 2014 at 7:23 p.m.

PSAS is the new Smash of the FGC. It would be funny if a bunch of people showed up and put on entertaining matches. It would be cool, but it's not likely.

I'll admit I have a morbid interest in seeing how this all turns out. I haven't watched a a weekly FGC stream for more than 5 minutes straight in a long time.

Yes, we do, which is why we are releasing a major balance update to coincide with this tournament as well.

AriesWarlock said on April 2, 2014 at 8:10 p.m.

So, some people are hoping for more third-party characters for a possible sequel. I would like them to focus first on getting more of the first-party characters they left out like Jennifer from Primal. Her moveset could be interesting in a fighting game.

Just_Tank said on April 2, 2014 at 8:14 p.m.

Hey folks,

First off, we have quite a few more than 15 people who play this game. It may not be Street Fighter numbers but an average of 15,000 - 20,000 people log online to play #PSAS daily, and that's well over a year after release now. Not too bad.

I formerly worked at THQ on WWE and UFC Undisputed and had the pleasure of getting to know the "FGC", the staff here at Event Hubs, Level-Up, iPlayWinner, Shoryuken, Mr.Wizard, and the list goes on. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Seth Killian at our Santa Monica Studio here and wish him the absolute best in his new endeavor, it was an honor working by his side.

The FGC community is niche (but growing massively), hardcore to the fighting bone, and is a tough audience to crack with a new game. That being said, we've always had a strong belief in SuperBot's creation with PlayStation All-Stars, and despite the past, we are here now, today, bringing a massive balance update that features over 100 changes combined across all characters. We are squarely focused on our promise to deliver this patch.

We have read every thread, word, and advocate on our message boards and social media, and have been determined to bring our promised patch to the PSAS community. We're on the cusp of it and I think it stands a chance at breathing new life into a game that gamers in the FGC should at least give a single match to, or another match to with this patch.

Being involved in The Runback with Level Up is an honor and we hope to see as many of you there, or watching the stream weekly.

See you on the flip side when the balance update releases very soon.

Cheers and good to be here again.

Not only that Sony needs to negotiate better deals with IP holder for third party characters, but the companies that own these characters like Square Enix (Cloud, Sora, & Lara) & Activision (Crash & Spyro) need to be more open minded & not ask for crazy demands. From Square Enix just not being more open and allow their characters to even appear as guest fighters. (even Disney were completely overly protective about Sora being associated with characters/items that came from Teen-Mature titles, despite that Sora is owned by Square Enix) Lara Croft could've easily been in the game, if the game was released later or if she was added as a DLC character since Crystal Dynamics didn't allow her to appear due to the new Tomb Raider game that hasn't been released & didn't want to spoil anything. (especially when it comes to the movelist)

To be quite honest (not to say this is a horrible ideas), having two modes from the Super Kill System & the Health Percentage/Knockout Ring (like SSB) is not a very good idea. Because the majority of people would just keep playing the other mode than the Super Kill which makes online matches a problem, another fact is that Superbot originally made the Super Kill just to be completely different from SSB by not using the same mechanics as SSB. (despite the fact that the controls & the levels are similar to SSB) I think a recommend idea is to really add some mechanics to the Super Kills without changing much, from AP becoming your main source & have to use it wisely. (when it comes to using Super Attacks & Reload System for Gun/Magic Characters) The only time you'd get a Knockout Kill is if your completely low on AP & can't afford to respawn if you get knocked off the stage. (which means AP would cost a lot when it comes to respawning making your character dizzy)

Even make Combo Characters start off with less AP when it comes to just attacking, the only time they gain more is if you do amount of combos.

If there's anything i've learned with my fun experience with Allstars is that if the characters are obscure, they are gonna win.

Parrapa and Kratos are ridiculously OP

AriesWarlock said on April 2, 2014 at 10:17 p.m.

I think I have read about some at Team Ico not wanting to use their characters in the game, but the person who was at the top of the studio left. So you know what, Sony should just say to hell with it, and use the characters they own.

@Just Tank

good to know you guys are listening.

DarkFlare07 said on April 3, 2014 at 6:33 a.m.

I had fun with this game till they patched it now it feels awkward for me and definitely unbalanced. It was more of a party game to me and never a fighting game which is why I never took it serious. If sony wants to attract the FGC more they shouldve made it more like MvC3 so if a sequel is comin get on it sony!

Id buy that day one if it was MvC3 style

Tensa said on April 3, 2014 at 7:08 a.m.

Should have added Dart to this game.

Does that mean I should finally take the shrinkwrap off this $9.99 game? Nah...

zferolie said on April 3, 2014 at 7:52 a.m.

I think thia game needed more characters that showed off its huge JRPG lineup. Yes, the characters already mentioned help, b7t I think a disgaea character like laharal or etna, a wild arms character, a persona character, and some sort of ff character wouls have mass9cly boost sales. I know a bunch of companiea didnt want to toss them in. Being a first gamw makes people wary. With a sequel they may be anle to convince them, aince they can show what the fans actually want.

The game it's self received positive reviews 7.5/10 type scores, and the game also received Fighting Game of the Year, at the 2013 D.I.C.E. Summit's Interactive Achievement Awards.

Jaxvex said on April 3, 2014 at 11:50 a.m.

Not really.

Most people who play this game are aware of it's problems, otherwise they wouldn't have been playing it for a year. Why do we do we still play then? Because it's fun. And this upcoming balance patch is going to make it even better.

So just because super smash exist there can't be another game with mashups of different characters from a company and if so it sucks? Seems legit

Dizzle said on April 3, 2014 at 8:17 p.m.

Not melee? Don't bother, right?

Cottoneyes said on April 3, 2014 at 8:44 p.m.

I still enjoy this game alot more than most others. It's far more entertaining than Brawl honestly and without PM, most people would just go back to Melee that aren't casuals. This game still has it's underground fanbase me being one of them, but even I knew it was a bit more on the rough side when it came to it's release not to mention sony and the FGC ripping it to shreds. Still though the game is alive and it's pretty enjoyable once in awhile when you take a break from all the normal crap we get.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though
