Proximity blocking option select can be used to punish whiffs and more in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012

Multiple users have discovered a way to punish whiffed normals, and potentially more, in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition by taking advantage of the game's proximity blocking mechanic.

Proximity blocking is activated when someone performs an attack close enough to you, and if you hold backwards, your character will begin to block even if the attack wouldn't otherwise connect.

Morville sent in the first clip which shows Cody option selecting Ryu's whiffed normal and connecting with an ultra, check it out below.
Naast noted in the comments that the way to do this is to input your special/ultra and end the motion with down-back, so for example with Abel's Ultra 1 the input would be — QCF QCF DB + PPP.

BCN|Alioune also mentioned another clip from Nevillebamshew which shows Gouken proximity block option selecting Ryu, but this time connecting with his counter attack instead of an ultra.

The video author noted that "Buffered special only activates if you enter a blocking stance straight after the whiffed normal."
Lastly there's a video from Ota Naast which shows several more proximity blocking option selects for a variety of the cast.
Multiple people have questioned the viability of this setup in a real match, but if users are able to figure out how to make it function in the course of an actual game, it definitely has the ability to impact how SSF4 AE v2012 is played.
