Should Scorpion be banned in Injustice tournament play? CD Jr. weighs in - vote in our poll and share your thoughts

Should Scorpion be banned in Injustice tournament play? CD Jr. weighs in - vote in our poll and share your thoughts There has been some controversy surrounding Scorpion in Injustice: Gods Among Us since he was added to the roster earlier this month. Since that time, Netherrealm Studios has released a hot fix patch which nerfed the character, but some people feel like it hasn't been enough.

A Scorpion player by the name of Rchusan recently won the South East Asia Majors 2013 Injustice tournament with that character, although he used other fighters as well.

EMP|CD Jr. has been fairly vocal about banning Scorpion recently on Twitter, comparing him to Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo Akuma, who is banned in tournament play. He stated that:

EMP|CD Jr.: Scorpion is ST Akuma this character needs to be banned. I don't give a f--- if he was just released he is clearly broken and breaks the game.

Rico Suave and I got destroyed by REO's two week Scorpion, and we were using our day one mains. REO is just way better than us right? *laughs*

Although this discussion happened earlier in the week, CEO tournament organizer, Alex Jebailey, also got in on the subject asking the scene if they thought the character should be banned, where some replied that Jebailey was "nuts."

Jebailey: @MK_CDjr Remember when I said hey people are asking me to consider banning Scorpion and everyone said I was nuts *laughs*. Let's see what happens.

As this character has been out for some time now, and had a decent run at a major tournament, what do you think? Should he be banned from tournament play, or do you feel he's not that strong of a character? Please feel free to vote in our poll, and/or leave a comment with your thoughts below.

Should Scorpion be banned in tournament play for Injustice: Gods Among Us?

CDjr? Last time he had an opinion in public, Uncle Valle had to teach nephew a lesson.

All the hype is gone from this game already. Might as well add Sub Zero, for how little anyone is already beginning to care about Injustice.

He should not be banned.

Pharaoh_Amaranth said on June 23, 2013 at 4:38 p.m.

Everyone always complains that we as the FGC never let things sit and marinate so we can figure out how to get past them on our own without crying for something to be nerfed. Therefore, I'm gonna vote that he SHOULD be allowed. Why? Work past him as you all tell us to do. Maybe that'll teach you all that SOME THINGS JUST MIGHT NEED TO BE NERFED.

I don't think he should be banned but idk I haven't played a high level scorpion I just wish he wasn't in the game lol

CAC said on June 23, 2013 at 4:41 p.m.

I come from the smash community. You know what the smash community absolutely DESPISES? Meta Knight. Every other character, regardless of awful design (ice climbers snake etc) were never as hated as the poor masked bastard. And while people loved the idea of a ban MK rule, at no point was it ever popular, not to mention it was pretty much laughed out the building in the areas that mattered, like NJ and NY. And honestly, it was better off for it.

I was never the biggest fan of brawl, but whenever people figured out how to do anything anti-MK--Something that happens often, because there's still a huge number of players playing characters other than Meta Knight--It was real fun to watch. Likewise, the community has shown that other characters can win handily. A Zero-Suit Samus player won our world tournament, man! I still don't know how he did it, but apparently ZSS is good now, who would have thunk it.

Just to be clear: if scorp gets banned, the injustice community is now considered more uptight than the "fox only no items final destination" community. Think about that for a moment.

Is Scorpion really dominating right now? I don't play Injustice but I haven't seen the character much on stream either. I think it's still to early to tell.

ReddChief said on June 23, 2013 at 4:42 p.m.

Sounds like someone is just salty this is the kind of whining that killed MK9 instead of learning and adapting they cry nerf now it's ban the character hasn't even been released that long

TheTHCGamer said on June 23, 2013 at 4:44 p.m.

Im not usually in favor of nerfing a character but there are times where it needs to happen. There are also times when a character needs to be banned from tournament play. To me it seems like every DLC character released by NRS for Injustice is stronger than the last one released. Kinda makes me worried about how good Zod will end up being. All that being said I think we should wait at least another month before we hit Scorpion with that ban hammer.

TheMasterPlayer said on June 23, 2013 at 4:45 p.m.

Uhm... Are people still interested in this game? This is why netherealm studios should stop using the Mortal Kombat engine and create a new fighting game engine from scratch. Any game they make is just a mortal kombat re-skin with stiff animations, boring, gimmicky and uninspired game play. It not only lacks flash, but is seriously lacking in the substance department. This game is already on its way down before it even got the chance to stand up long enough to thrive.

NickGhoulster said on June 23, 2013 at 4:47 p.m.

Scorpion isn't broken. CDjr is just a sore loser.

am_zangief said on June 23, 2013 at 4:47 p.m.

He should not be banned, he should just be removed from the game! Last time I checked scorpion was NOT a DC character. I don't care if people that play this game like MK, I, like a lot of people that do play this game don't care one bit about mortal kombat. Leave the MK characters for MK 10, put in Swamp thing or Animal man, anyone else for the the DC world in. Scorpion was a bad choice, thats all.

mvegetam said on June 23, 2013 at 4:48 p.m.

AngrySteve said on June 23, 2013 at 4:49 p.m.

@#12 Considering there are still a ton of people who watch it on stream, I would say people are still interested. It was also the top selling game in May. I could be wrong but everything I see points to it still garnering interest.

No, don't ban anyone. Scorpion has his MK teleport that nobody else in Injustice can do, but its not impossible to get around, its just not easy.

....I mean IT. Get over IT!

Obanye said on June 23, 2013 at 4:57 p.m.

A lot of people here do no play Injustice. Here I will break it down for you.

Scorpion is ST Akuma, He was given a move that does not fit the game engine and completely nullifies many important aspects of the game.

Scorpion breaks the design of the game. His teleport punch move was designed for a game with a block button. Its nearly impossible to react to and hits anywhere on screen.

Intractable become impossible to use when facing a Scorpion, attempting to use intertactables will just get you full combo punished by teleport while the scorpion is free to use them as normal.

Since his move is incredibly if not impossible to react to in many situations the game is diminished to hold down and guessing what scorpion is going to do for 100% of the entire screen, throughout the entire match.

There is no "leveling up" to do against a move that you can't or can barely react to that controls the entire screen, dominates half the cast with one move, renders zoning completely useless and ruins the interactable aspect of the game.

That said, we need to wait for CEO and EVO to prove a ban is worthy.

ALSO Injustice is GDLK, I play that as well as SF and TK.

I understand lots of you are saying don't ban him but think about it this way a lot better players are saying he's noticeably OP. Sometimes the so called whining is valid.

@33 Im not saying we have the right all im saying is tournaments do matter to us which you stated they don't unless were competing. Im not even saying we should ban him but lets not assume that some characters don't deserved to be banned. Theres a reason past characters have been banned in fighting games before.

You want a valid reason though how about he's a DLC character and since its to close to tournaments time he shouldn't be allowed. That's all it takes for a character to be banned from a tournament and he's not even banned yet so many angry Scorpion mainers. Hey I use Scorpion too sometimes hes easy to win with and fun to use so yea im fine with whatever decision ends up happening.

Also #24 had a pretty solid argument that everyone seemed to ignore.

ya_boy said on June 23, 2013 at 5:10 p.m.

He should be banned, he doesn't even belong in the damn game anyways.

Villest1 said on June 23, 2013 at 5:15 p.m.

He does NOT belong in the game. lol its that simple. He WAS NOT designed for this game. He DOES NOT fit in the game. Why wont people just admit it?

OD_Starwin said on June 23, 2013 at 5:16 p.m.

The fact that Scorpion is at a advantage when the match starts is frustrating. Its hard for anyone to zone him because teleport has fast enough start up to get around most projectiles in the game. It's also incredibly hard to react to. Teleport was easy to get around in MK because you actually had a block button. All of his jump ins, especially j.3, are some of the best in the game, this guy is a pain to anti air. Lastly his bnb leads into a incredibly fast 50/50 that leads into the same 50/50. His only weaknesses is his damage output and some of his specials need meter to stay safe, but even then he builds a lot of meter from hitting random j.3's and his bnb that he will usually have meter to use.

At this point I don't think he needs to be banned, but he really needs more modifications to where he plays like an Injustice character and not a MK character. More start up on his teleport and possibly getting rid of his air teleport may make him feel more like a Injustice character.

Lastly to the people saying this game is already dying, you guys are apparently blind. This game still gets a lot of entrants each week at BC and WNF. Even at majors this game still gets a lot of entrants.

fxtricky said on June 23, 2013 at 5:16 p.m.

He should be taken from tourny play. He is broken and should never even have been put in the game from get go. It was a half hearted attempt at getting a mk char some love when this was supposed to be a dc game formost and first reguardless of choice. Ed Boon and NRS knew that and for that they should be frowned down on. Copy and paste is not what games were made for and this was a copy and paste job that turned the char to be overwhleming to all other chars in the game. DC didnt want the last game to have their char getting killed off from fatlitys yet they arnt complaining about a mk char dominating their ips to crap. In the end of the day they can fix/nerf the chars moves to fix it or ban him complete from tourny play.

Ryu_Apprentice said on June 23, 2013 at 5:18 p.m.

Ok here are some actual facts about Scorpion

1. His harpoon is useless outside combos
2. His hell fire move is easy to react to, similar to grundy zombies.
3. His teleport doesnt hit you when you crouch
4. His teleport cannot hit you if you are walking FORWARD
5. His teleport is EXTREMELY punishable
6. His teleport hits you if you jump like a mofo
7. His teleport hits you when you use interactable brainlessly
8. His teleport hits you when you jump back and spam projectiles

If you consider Scorpion OP please consider the following:

1. Break your game disc
2. Throw your PS3 into the river or just run it over with your car
3. Buy more salt to increase sodium levels
4. Play as Scorpion and win your own $$$
5. Play as any character with 50% combo, so punish that teleport
6. Learn to not do stupid things in matches
7. Join the Scorpion army
8. Enlist in the Scorpion corp
9. Play MK so you can use Scorpion like a pro
10. Just drink until you can teleport yourself too.

MentalFloss said on June 23, 2013 at 5:18 p.m.

@39 Didn't ignore his argument and some of it does indeed seem sound. But still nowhere near enough in my opinion to call him broken and bannable. But then again I grew up in the age of fighters not getting updates and having to deal with the occasional cheese-factor some players insisted on using. And eventually people found ways to beat it and it didn't take 2-3 weeks of the character being released, it could take months in some cases but eventually it became a non-issue.

I think we should all go back and re-read what #24 said. THAT is what I'm saying. He doesn't (or at least that move) doesn't belong in the game at all because it really is almost impossible to actually PLAY without worrying about having to duck to try to block the move. You never get any chance to think for ourselves playing against him because we're so worried about when that move is coming. And we KNOW it's coming.

Day 25: Superman is OP, but screw you he is SUPERMAN
Day X: SCORPION IS OP!!! He gets tonned down
Day XX: Scorpion is still OP!!! Higher sodium post nerf
Day XXX: Scorpion should be banned!!!!!!

People are saying that Scorpion "ruins the game regardless of balance", as if most games wouldn't be better without that one too-good character. If Third Strike never had Chun-Li, it would functionally be a perfect game to me.

I don't want to be rude here. You're not an idiot for seeing a problem here. Hell, from my understanding of scorp? He's kind of awful, design-wise. You just don't... really have an understanding of the most important part of fighting game development, that being to figure stuff out. Find something to blow him up.

If nothing's found, and he absolutely dominates every major (to be clear, going back to smash, meta knight was winning more than every other character combined for a while, and he's still safe in 99% of rulesets), then we can talk sincere balance. Until then, these are kneejerk reactions, and I'd rather not see injustice turn into a game where people outright reject metagame development in favor of half-thought anger.

Mojo said on June 23, 2013 at 5:31 p.m.

I won't really waste much time replying to guys on eventhubs but guys like Ryu_Apprentice don't get it. When x character prevents any other character from moving, even 1 then that character needs to be looked at.

Batmang said on June 23, 2013 at 5:31 p.m.

He's such a stupid character that doesn't fit in at all with the rest of the cast, playstyle and universe-wise. I guess post-CEO would be a better time to determine whether or not he should be banned.

Cammystrike said on June 23, 2013 at 5:32 p.m.

Injustice has the most spineless community out there. All they do is cry, complain, rage quit, than cry some more. It sucks that I really like the game, because being apart of their community sucks.

TheTHCGamer said on June 23, 2013 at 5:33 p.m.

@45 Same but there have been times where characters have been banned with valid reason I may add. I do feel its too early to consider banning Scorpion but lets not feel every character in every fighting game is legit for tournament play. Even if Scorpion does end up being OP we need to give it some time to figure out the right way to nerf him instead of making him useless.

@46 I respect you for using Selina a lot of people don't know just how good she is in Injustice. To me the projectile characters dominate this game a bit but that's because projectiles work pretty well in this game. Anyway people calm the f*** down players like Perfect Legend are trying to prove hes not broken and we are entitled to our own opinions.

Lets give it some time maybe he will end up being to OP and banned maybe he wont. My vote is not sure because we don't know all the ins and outs yet. On top of that Scorpion like lots of other characters in fighting games might end up having a bad matchup or two. Who knows maybe it will be confirmed hes too strong. Guess what though way to early to tell at this point.

Also a lot of the complaining about Injustice isn't coming from the Injustice community but rather people who are casuals/new to the game. Remember this is game is one of the best selling fighting games this gen and part of that reason is because people who don't usually play fighting games are playing it.

LordJim said on June 23, 2013 at 5:34 p.m.

Yeah, all those Chun players would migrate to characters that do not beat or even obliterate most of the cast, like Yun, Ken or Makoto.

#52 & #53

Just because you two aren't decent at Marvel, doesn't make it a less than solid game.

The difference is, Marvel is a team game of 3, while Injustice is one on one.

Not to mention that the Marvel community actually tries to figure out how to beat things that people call cheap or broken, while the Injustice/MK community wants to nerf everything that they can't beat, high-level players included.

goffstrom said on June 23, 2013 at 5:36 p.m.

First of all, as much salt as I have for playing against Scorpion, I say don't ban him. Not until it is proven he wins all majors.

2nd of all, why is it the only ones who truly defend Scorpion, are Scorpion players, and those people who do NOT even play the game? If you don't play, you don't get a say, just be quiet.

People act as if this would be the 1st character banned, when we all know in many previous fighting games, characters have proven to be overpowered and banned. Akuma in SSF2T, a few in Soul Calibur 4.

Every argument made to punish Scorpion brainless play is just that, to punish the brain less only. But remember, "Pro Players" are not brainless, and several have switched to Scorpion. They will be playing smart, and they will show just what Scorpion is capable of in solid hands.

If Grand Finals comes down to Scorpion Reo Vs Scorpion PL, what then will you say? What say you? In MK9, they used different characters, so why is it they now have chosen the same for Injustice?

Jedda678 said on June 23, 2013 at 5:37 p.m.

Ok if a character is dangerous from full screen to up in your face...something is wrong.

Garcian_Ulmeyda said on June 23, 2013 at 5:37 p.m.

@ 12
Dude shut the hell up! I am so tired of seeing people like you who complain about a game they don't even play. This isn't SRK, stop trying to kill a game you don't play just because the game you like isn't the story all the damn time.

Second to everyone who is saying don't ban Scorpion but also saying "well I've never played Injustice but..." stop right there. If you haven't dealt with Scorpion you don't understand how brainless and easy it is to use and abuse his teleport and UNBLOCKABLE fire move. The character forces you to approach him because if you sit still you get hit with and unblockable attack if you close in on him he teleports. And he has enough high/low mixups to negate the whole duck under the teleport nerf since his recovery on a whiffed teleport.

I've been in the lab for hours trying to find a viable defense and offense to this crap. I use Flash, Nightwing, Lobo, Harley, Batgirl, and Hawkgirl. At least with Batgirl her teleport doesn't mix you up itself and has a decent amount of recovery when used. Hawkgirl seems to be the best defense against Scorpion because of her extended flight and albeit narrow dive kick. Batgirl seemed like a decent counter as well but only works when the opposing Scorpion is scared of a rival teleport.

So through hours of research I've found a single character to counter Scorpion and even that matchup has it's problems. I know it seems like whining but Injustice was a fairly balanced game until Scorpion came along. He is the Yun of SSFIVAE, he is the Akuma of SSF2T, and you know what Yun got nerfed and Akuma got banned. Either they need to nerf Scorpion or he needs to be banned. And Hell while they're at it tone down Black Adam too.

FakeVariable said on June 23, 2013 at 5:38 p.m.

This is dumb. He is not comparable to ST Akuma. ST Akuma was deigned as a hidden boss character who was not meant to be used competitively because he was designed to Rick Roll everyone and be practically unbeatable.

Scorpion is just better than all the other characters right now. It happens. Deal with it or play Scorpion also. Don't cry because you lost at the character select screen, that's your own fault.

It may be lame that one character is currently better than all the others, but this is much different from a playable boss character that was never designed to be used competitively or created with any intention of balance with the rest of the cast.

@63: Would it mean much? Mirror match GFs aren't exactly rare. Again: if this character utterly dominates, more than any other character? We'll be having some problems. Until, it's time to put up or shut up. Learn matchups. Learn what to do. If the first response to a strong character is a mass surrender like the community's pulling right now? That's not the game's problem.

No, just get use to it. I picked up superman recently and have been beating people that I can't beat with day one main. But, hey, I don't want him banned :p

Cammystrike said on June 23, 2013 at 5:48 p.m.

CD Jr. Is salty he got out derped. Can't do the same Superman string over and over to coast to an easy victory any more. All this guy does is spit hot garbage from his mouth over twitter, I can't stand him.

To all complaining about how whiny the Injustice community is, you are all a bunch of hypocrites. Before Injustice came out, and still to this day, I constantly see complaints and whines about Marvel. Before Ultimate, it was Dark Phoenix. Now, it's MorriDoom. And I constantly see people bicker at how tired they are of seeing this.

So please, I don't want to hear your hypocrisy.

TheTHCGamer said on June 23, 2013 at 5:53 p.m.

Also people stop calling out all the top level players not all of them are saying Scorpions OP as I stated Perfect Legend has been defending him since day one and the same with players like AK Pig Of The Hut. A few top level players doesn't mean all the top level players in the MK/Injustice community. Also quit calling out the Injustice community when the majority of people complaining are just people who picked up the game and whine because its easier to do then learning how too adapt.

Im not part of the community for every game ive ever played just the ones I choose to be a part of.

tortoos said on June 23, 2013 at 5:53 p.m.

Netherrealms kind of has a precedent for releasing broken as hell dlc characters, then going crazy 'normalizing' their cast. What usually ends up happening is so many nerfs and buffs fly around people just get sick of dealing with it and get the hell out. Other than buffing just REALLY bad characters, the game should probably sit for a while and let some tech develop. That being said, I can totally see why people freak out towards scorpion, and Zod looks to be just a better cyborg from what I've seen so far. Ultimately it's up to the community to decide on the longevity of the game, but NR never seems to help matters with so much DLC and balance changes happening so early into the game's life. Injustice is a fun game, but I wouldn't say it was a great one by any means. odds are, it's gonna end up like mk9. Where people are driven away by lack of interest or NR's behavior towards their titles, and it falls in the hands of a few core fans trying to keep the game alive in the long term. So no, don't ban scorpion, even if he is lame. The game needs to sit for a while, which is something netherrealms can't seem to understand.

CAC said on June 23, 2013 at 5:54 p.m.

@79: Those whines went somewhere. There's a laundry list of anti-phoenix tech, and people are pretty clearly beginning to figure out moving around morridoom's projectiles. For all the feces being slung at their community, the marvel community is one grown on the concept of "don't like it? learn how to beat it".

Again: if the first response to a strong character is surrendering, THAT IS NOT A GOOD SIGN FOR A COMMUNITY.

Blazur said on June 23, 2013 at 5:56 p.m.

I don't even play legitimately when faced against a scorpion. Instead, I always counter pick with doomsday and abuse his body slam and D3. It works about 80% of the time and often causes rage to which I reply "Don't use a bitch character". Scorpion upsets the balance of this game, IMO.

TheLaw said on June 23, 2013 at 5:56 p.m.

@65 yea but she has a 50/50 mixup that both options lead into launchers and it is safe + allows you to do d2 into Bolo into the reset AGAIN.. it's so braindead lol. This article is the exact reason why Injustice is bad as hell....

One more thing this game doesn't have a solid netcode like other fighting games so if your basing your impressions on online play then do me a favor keep it to yourself.

tortoos said on June 23, 2013 at 6 p.m.

@84 That's essentially what I was saying. Injustice is like marvel. It's not a good fighting game by any stretch of the imagination. It is a fun game however, which is why people will play it despite it's numerous and sometimes fundamental flaws. If everyone wanted to just play good fighters, KoF XIII would be one of the most played games at tournaments simply because of how good of a game it is. But it isn't. People don't necessarily play what they think is good, they play what they think is fun. Injustice is very, very easy to get into. You can get a decent character knowledge within a day or two of practicing with that character, which is worlds apart from many other more complicated fighters. It's ease of use is one of the reasons people find it fun and continue to play it, despite the game not being particularly well balanced.

AlphaJ4769 said on June 23, 2013 at 6 p.m.

Scorpion shouldn't be banned. If your having trouble with a certain character, you go and study that character. There moves, speed, hitboxes, etc. Bans are just stupid, it just show people that when the going gets tough, just quit. Give the FGC some time to figure the character out, then people will find ways to get around it. There's no need to whine and complain about it CDJr.

People don't play KOF because the netcode is trash, and hardly anyone in America gives a damn about it.

Stop being bitter because your community is less than other games.

TheTHCGamer said on June 23, 2013 at 6:05 p.m.

@85 Don't pussy foot you calling me out? When all is said and done I can guarantee you Injustice will end up being one of the best selling fighting games on consoles this gen. Your also saying games havent sold well as of late well that could just means there might not be many quality games for Injustice to compete with which only helps its sales.

Just based on its DC license alone this game will sell well and im not saying its the best selling game however it im sure it is selling well. Lastly man up call me out if your going to do it and don't act like you dont see that number next to my post.

RandomJohn said on June 23, 2013 at 6:08 p.m.

no because Yun and Yang were the same way when AE came out. There were broken but people managed to deal with them even at Evo. Cry babies will be cry babies.

TheLaw said on June 23, 2013 at 6:09 p.m.

@91 hmm i wonder why? its not because Batman and Superman are in it, oh no, that isn't the case.... -_-'

GrimmjawJin said on June 23, 2013 at 6:09 p.m.

Doesn't matter if scorpion is the best/worst/broken character. The main question should be why does he exist in THIS game in the first place? Completely irrelevant and waste of an invaluable character slot IMHO.

BlackMasamune said on June 23, 2013 at 6:11 p.m.

Let it Rock until after EVO, and then re-evaluate.

TheTHCGamer said on June 23, 2013 at 6:12 p.m.

@93 That was exactly one of the reasons I stated but the fact still remains this game will sell better than most fighting games this gen. So even though it might not be the best quality fighting game this gen its still as I stated a success in the eyes of the developers/publishers. Just read comment #26 i don't know where dude got the idea where i consider his game is great just based on sales alone i was just responding to a comment.

Hell no CDjr what the hell you doing you were one of the top players than he lost in ECV and now he wants to band Scorpion I though he was top.Scorpion is easily punishable and I wonder what Tom's thoughts are on this usually he doesn't like nerfs or anything right away.Scorpion can be beat just practice more.

Nah, Batgirl isn't braindead. That combo is pretty nasty but there are easy ways to get around it. One is simply pressure. I main Flash and pressure her until she thinks I'm gonna keep rushing down and when she use a wake up attack I counter with a 48% combo. Don't get me wrong though she has made me pretty mad before.

Good idea but a good scorpion will get around that.

Yeah I do admire the Marvel Community for just saying deal with it when it comes to BS in the game. But I really have just stopped watching Marvel and honestly I don't know why anyone keeps playing it. I play it for fun (i've held my own against Royal Flush playing casuals) but when it comes to seeing another MorriDoom or Level 4 Vergil one character versus 3 comeback I just don't see the appeal. Out of 50 some odd characters 8 are truly viable. That just isn't fun that's boring. Actually MorriDoom is what made me go back to SSFIVAE2012.

cant we all agree that scorpio does a get a great advantage with his.moveset and he.most.likely needs some adjusting. dudes gameplan literraly overrides everyone elses. not as much as others but it does. now as for cdjr, he is looking pretty childish have validity.
