Justin Wong's Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tier list - complete version We've posted EG|Justin Wong's entire tier list for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Before, only the Capcom cast was available, but this adds the Marvel side into the mix.

Unlike more traditional tier lists, Justin takes things a few steps further, offering pros and cons for each fighter in addition to a letter grade. He also discusses partners and which positions on a team he feels each fighter is strong at. Here's a little blurb to get you started.

Hey guys, this time this tier list will consist of the cast in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Now before I start I just want to say this is my opinion on all these characters and anyone can disagree or agree.

In the partner section, the people listed there can be an assist that would be helpful or they can use the assist to help their game. For example: Wolverine loves Tatsu assist but Akuma loves Dr. Doom assist. You might see a lot of Doctor Dooms, Vergils in those sections, just a heads up. =p

I will have a grade system running from S+, S, S-, A+, A, A- B+, B, B-, C+ C, C- and D with S+ being highest and D being lowest.

You can find a full archive of EG|Justin Wong's columns here on EventHubs, and you can view his Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012 tier list that was posted a little ways back.

In the future, Justin will be doing a tier list for Street Fighter X Tekken v2013, so stay tuned to the front page for updates.

Dante and Doom seem to be the best assist characters in the game too, they go with everyone.

JesseRobles said on June 4, 2013 at 1:59 p.m.

He could have just written "poop" in Hsien-Ko's description.

Jennyfromtheblock said on June 4, 2013 at 2:08 p.m.

Surprised with how he has Jenny.

NyuBomber said on June 4, 2013 at 2:10 p.m.

Knock X-23 down a + sign (She is not better than Dante. Or Skrull. Or Wesker. Etc.)

Push Trish up a + sign.

Knock Chun down a + sign.

Move Hsien Ko to D- grade. Only Gold-mode Pendulum saves her from F. Give Capcom the F for how they F'd up implementing her.

Been waiting to see the full list primarily to see if he'd agree with me and put Iron Fist lower than Chun-Li. Glad to see that he does. I still have my disagreements with some characters but it is his opinion. Over time some placements could change.

xBMxSage said on June 4, 2013 at 2:17 p.m.

@4 - Why knock down Chun? She should actually be above some of the characters placed higher than her.

FlynnChop said on June 4, 2013 at 2:22 p.m.

You're right. Compared to you, Justin Wong is a stupid noob. You must be the most amazing/knowledgeable UMvC3 player on the planet! Has James Chen ever asked for your autograph? How many majors have you won? Must be all of them, right?

smashfury said on June 4, 2013 at 2:38 p.m.

there is a few errors

x-23 : position text was replaced with team builds
skrull : format is off for position and team builds

other than that the list doesn't look that bad

Jman36x said on June 4, 2013 at 2:43 p.m.

For being one guys opinion this list has been the most accurate I've seen so far. He put major thought into why characters are good and bad.

DevilMaySpy said on June 4, 2013 at 2:54 p.m.

I would've laughed if Hsienko was the only F tier character.

YumaTsukumo said on June 4, 2013 at 3:10 p.m.

Mags/Doom/Vergil best in the game oh yea :D

MarLightning said on June 4, 2013 at 3:35 p.m.

Whoa... MODOK is a A+ tier??? Cool! I will figure out what his potentials are. That, I would be top 8. Kappa

Note MODOK can cancel out Morrigan's soul fists and her at the same time. So, when I am playing against Morridoom, I will have to use MODOK. Also, MODOK can stay floating at the screen top during Morrigan's Astral Vision.

NyuBomber said on June 4, 2013 at 3:45 p.m.

@7 She is speedy and can combo for hours, but she works way too hard for way too little, even with X-Factor. I don't think she's better than Arthur and Nemesis.

@15 While it did go way too far, it is true that Justin being one of the best in the world means his opinions probably are a heck of a lot more knowledgeable than ours when it comes to Marvel.

Pretty surprised with his view on She-Hulk (feared that he would have her low). Just a little unsure on the suggested assists (namely Strider) when you would think it would be better to see another assist that can help her get in (some kind of projectile much like the Strange and Sentinel suggestion) to go along with the combo extender (Spencer) and the "get-off-me" (Haggar).

My Ultimate Marvel 3 Tier list:

Don't even try to win just watch me press buttons while a bunch of stuff happens before you die Tier:
Magneto, Vergil, Zero

I fill the screen up with so much crap that you can't even move Tier:
Morrigan, Doom

I'm good enough to win but not S-Tier so I only get picked because players don't want to be called a Tier Whore from picking Vergil and Magneto Tier:
C. Viper, Spencer, Wolverine, Amaterasu, Dormammu, Nova, Strider, Dante, Storm

I used to be good but now I suck because S-Tier is too broken Tier:
Wesker, Phoenix

Dat Pipe and Mustache Tier:

I hate this game so I'm just going to pick sh** characters Tier:
Tron, Hsien-Ko, Phoenix Wright

Everyone else Tier:
Everyone else.

xBMxSage said on June 4, 2013 at 6:43 p.m.

@14 - By "little" do you mean her damage output is low? Cause she's capable of doing 900k+ using one bar.

mrdrofficer said on June 4, 2013 at 6:51 p.m.

This game is amazing and so is this list. Now if only snap backs were invincible, hit boxes were balanced, status change supers cost three meters for everyone and didn't gain meter during. Then it would be perfect.

And if you could create your own assists and colors like SG and/or kof and doom missile's disappeared on hit/ caused flip back when it hits during their combos so they had to play smart.

Then it would be perfect.

Also new characters and stages.

And carnage.

Then ....

lmao soggytoast went in lmao but i feel him though i mean like it really doesnt matter whos what tier once a glitch is found all that ish changes............ i remeber on mvc2 cammy was bottom tier...... until that loop was found

Wow. You've put a lot of thought into this crazy sexual imagery! I'd retort, but I'm honestly not quite on that level.

You guys are right, though. I went WAY too far.

NyuBomber said on June 5, 2013 at 5:50 a.m.

@22: "Works too hard" is referring to how she does in the lead-up to hopefully getting her damage.

How many of those combo-friendly attacks serve her any good in actually getting in or defending herself/controlling space? (That aren't assist-related, because everybody has access to the same assists.)

What maneuvering options does she have besides triple jump or the one-direction air dash?

She's lacking tools. Everybody in C is, that's why they're there. I just don't think she ranks with the C+'s.

xBMxSage said on June 5, 2013 at 9:54 a.m.

@26 - While her fireball may not go full screen, it's slow movement and fast recovery allows her to follow with it in her approach. It can also be used to make it difficult for others to approach her.

Air Spinning Bird Kick is a great tool for offensive and defensive purposes. Pretty quick startup, can beat some other attacks, catches opponents airdashing, and is 0 on block.

Tenshokyaku L is the fastest non-grab move in the game with only 2 frames of startup. It's great for punishing pretty much anything. She's the only character who can punish Taskmaster's Sword Master without using x-factor.

EX SBK can be stored. Once charged she is capable of wavedashing, which is pretty good for her, to her opponent while still holding the charge and use it's invincibility to beat out other attacks.

Airdashing and using her j.M and j.H attacks are really good pokes. From midscreen, she can punish whiffed beam attacks like disruptor and plasma beam.

Her Yosokyaku is an incredibly fast overhead which she can airdash cancel on hit and followup with for a full combo. You know how J. Wong dashes up with Wolverine, does a quick j.L and x-factor cancels to followup? Yosokyaku is equally as fast and just as impossible to react to and doesn't require x-factor.

Just to add, her normals are jump cancelable so she can go from a low attack to a high attack almost instantly. She can also runaway really well with her triple jump and using Tenshokyaku H three times each jump. Can also combo from both her air and ground grabs.

I think that about covers what she has to offer. I want to ask though, you pointed out tools that you think she is lacking and therefore think she should be in C instead of C+, but do you really agree that She-Hulk should be B or Ryu and Sentinel B-? Those three are far too easy to runaway from and block. The only reason most people pick Sentinel is for his assist but he doesn't really have anything special to offer on his own.

NyuBomber said on June 5, 2013 at 12:30 p.m.

@27: I don't agree with you on her fireball. If it lingered longer or had more durability, sure, but it's weak on those fronts, and will more often than not either be eaten by a number of choice projectile assists, who can sit safe behind the point character and, potentially, even catch Chun and leave her vulnerable to being comboed; or avoided/ignored by the point character If she's using it for offense, she's not actually moving in, and may potentially be pushed out. She would be better off relying on her own assist and her pressure to get in.

All your other advantages listed are good...but they're not good enough. If she's on offense, she'll probably be pushblocked, and if she jump cancels she only has one way to go to continue pressure. Iron Fist can go low or overhead, and Thor has his command grab + super command grab + a better distance game. I've yet to see her high-low game be a true threat in a game of pushblocking and screen-controlling assists, because it's not good enough to move her above C, for me. Likewise for the rest of her pros: decent, but not above pretty decent.

Ryu could probably be pulled down to C+. I agree with Sentinel in B-; while we love to make jokes about Whackbot, he still has the number of advantages that Justin pointed out + others (Hyper Sentinel Force is super DHC friendly, command grab (which helps against his 'easy to block' weakness), ease of execution, etc.)

I also have problems with both She-Hulk and Shuma being in B-tier. Shuma should be C, as his mobility issues weigh him down disappointingly, and Mystic Smash isn't enough of a replacement for actual movement options or speed.

Shulk, I'd move to B-. She doesn't stack up to the others in her current bracket, but meets perfectly with characters like Iron Man or DP.
