Shazam character art found on the Injustice: Gods Among Us website, Ed Boon confirms DLC characters on Twitter

Posted by SFilp • February 5, 2013 at 12:08 p.m. PST
Official Shazam character artwork has been found over on the Injustice: Gods Among Us battle arena website and has since been taken down.

As this is the artwork that is being used in the Injustice Battle Arena previews, and the final of the first four rounds will be on February 25th, it is extremely likely that we will see an official character announcement before then.

Below is the image of Shazam, along with Batman and Bane for a reference to the style used in the official art.

Additionally, Ed Boon on Twitter confirmed that there will be DLC characters that had previously been teased.

Would injustice have dlc characters like mk9? - AJaiswal95

!Captain Marvel looks horrendus. Why is he wearing a hood?

I know this is comparativley small stuff, and is entirely personal, but I just hate the costume designs in this game.

TheShadowDancer6 said on February 5, 2013 at 12:33 p.m.

This company is quite clever with their DLC's. With MK, they put all the mainstream favourites as included in the game to get that market and then put in Rain and Kenshi as DLC because they realize that the casual gamer will probably not wait around for/buy DLC but the hard core will, which is why they released those specific characters as DLC. Also, they put in Freddy to ensure mainstreamers still have something in case they DO want to purchase. I bet you Lobo and some other cult favourite will be DLC as well as a mainstream character. Good stuff.

Jocelotknee said on February 5, 2013 at 12:52 p.m.

@17, the guys at NRS seemed to be basing this design off Shazam's redesign for the New 52 comics. They're pretty much the same in terms of hood and stuff.

Mac_Gargan said on February 5, 2013 at 12:54 p.m.

Shazam is so torso heavy!? Ack! Netherrealm, enlarge the fists when you enlarge the character's body. (Art 101, if you're trying to make them look cool)

I'd play Penguin first, if he was there, no joke...cause the rest are gonna be predictable.

Eye_of_Orochi said on February 5, 2013 at 12:58 p.m.

I'm confused...why doesn't anyone care that there are characters being planned to be DLC before the game even releases (not that I mind at all, DLC doesn't bother me because it is optional)?

Is it because they are likely to be off-disc? Is it because they were upfront about it? Or is it just the demand for the roster to contain as many characters as possible? I would really like to know the opinion about this, because with SFxT people were acting like Capcom committed a genocide but with this game and NRS it is going ignored.

Sounds like they have a lot of confidence in their product. I'm sure just the fact that it is DC will keep people happy and sell the game no matter how it actually turns out. I know I'm getting it lol, maybe not on release but my fighter collection is screaming for this title.

@21: Not while ago, Hctor Sancez, developer from the game said in an interview. "If your favourite character doens't make it, he can still have a chance to be in the game, we're gonna work aditional DLC characters based on the gamers request for characters that didn't make it in the initial release"

This is pretty much what they did on MK9 with Kenshi.

WBK_ZER0 said on February 5, 2013 at 1:27 p.m.

Eye_of_Orochi said on February 5, 2013 at 1:31 p.m.

@ 28

That is a good way to promote DLC. Giving a character that the fans wanted is a huge feeling of accomplishment and elation for those that helped get them in. It also leaves the lingering possibility that your character could get in one day, which will keep you interested long term.

I guess Capcom should have just been more upfront or delivered the DLC in a different way. Like selling the characters in pairs so that some people don't feel they are buying the whole $20 pack just for one character.

CapnFlacid said on February 5, 2013 at 1:39 p.m.

I dont like the hood too much either but overall he looks pretty cool.

The only time i've actually seen Shazam was in Justice League.

Is this Shazam a kid?

Cinderkin said on February 5, 2013 at 1:41 p.m.

I bought the DLC for SFxt just for Guy so I can understand peoples gripes in that regard.

I think DLC is frustrating for a game you are trying to either somewhat play seriously or competitively. Costume DLC doesn't need to be purchased, but characters usually do if you want to learn match ups and such.

I hope that they add some really good unlockable costumes unlike MK9 which was primarily DLC although a lot were free.

I think the hooded Shazam looks cool, but I'm not a DC fan. So I can understand Fans not liking how their favorite characters are turning out in this game.

I don't know how it's going to work for Injustice, but MK9, the motion-capture had not even started on the DLC characters when the game launched. That's the difference: with Capcom, the DLC mostly finished before release; NRS didn't try to withhold content for downloadable sales (except for the on-disc skins, but we don't talk about that).

Aluppoj said on February 5, 2013 at 2:59 p.m.

He announces DLC prior to the games release? And you maniacs are ok with this?

Wtf guys? I thought DLC was ONLY to be conjured up POST RELEASE based on the earnings/popularity of the initial release?!?

You mean companies plan/create this stuff in advance?!?! Gtfo, I can't believe it. But don't worry. The DATA will be STORED in your HD instead of on the disk. So it's better hidden now.

And since it'll be stored differently all you effin hypocrites can save your tears.

SnakeX said on February 5, 2013 at 3:10 p.m.

Shazam's outfit looks really weird. Like he's wearing skintight power armor. NRS seems to be going for the Hollywood approach for costumes with this game. Oh well, at least there's gonna be DLC costumes.

The answer is simple. Because it's not a Capcom game so people don't care. I guarantee you if Capcom made the exact same announcement people would be grabbing their torches and pitchforks by now. It's not cool to hate on NRS YET. Give them a couple more games and you'll see the same dumb hatred all over again.

Otter_of_Death said on February 5, 2013 at 3:27 p.m.

You guys are crying way to early. "DLC is planned" does not mean "DLC is completed and ready to sell." It wasn't true of MK, and it's probably not true of this game. There is a huge difference between planning DLC and withholding completed content.

Dark_summon said on February 5, 2013 at 3:35 p.m.

Agrees with #41. The gripe with capcom games was that the finished characters were already on the disc and you have to pay extra for said content. When NRS did mk some models were found on the disc, These said characters were either scrapped (A la fujin ) or due to demand finished added (Skarlet).

TrueGamingGuru said on February 5, 2013 at 3:42 p.m.

@21 speaking of DLC, I use to found a certain topic regarding about DLC. That for Injustice Gods Among Us, there is certain details with handle of the DLC possible detail involves having the content within the HDD files. Honestly with Capcom's DLC, I belive there is alot of scenes going on and its not Capcom alone other games did this before SFXT. I'm starting to know the REAL TRUTH about the DLC in general and the true unbalancement of videogames in general.

Zenfluence said on February 5, 2013 at 3:56 p.m.

Aluppoj said on February 5, 2013 at 4:29 p.m.

Right, they'll have the team finish up and move on, only to come back later to finish/balance/implement the effing Pre Planned content..... Ah no.

The guys a$$es are already in the chairs. They're making/completing it now. You'll just DL the files off of their server later. Better hiding spot then on the disk:)

And for your troubles, you can store the mandatory character update on your HD. Hope that's ok for ppl running low on HD space.

Any person with a brain in their head realizes that if this were Capcom's announcement, heads would already be rolling.

You're going to need more than conspiracy-theory logic to demonstrate your point. Given the amount of content in this game, it's not even plausible they'd have time to complete the DLC. Without evidence, this "NRS iz witholding kompleted content like CapzComs" sentiment is nothing more than fan paranoia.

That's not completely accurate. Captain Marvel's comics were titled Shazam because it was condition of the lawsuit DC settled with Marvel Comics. Both companies could use the name Captain Marvel for their respective characters but only Marvel Comics could use it as a title for their comics. To get around this issue, DC title the comics "Shazam!" after the phrase Billy Batson shouts to become Captain Marvel. Honestly, they probably got tired of people correcting people and just decided to call him Shazam in the New 52.

The average FGC brain is not developed enough to understand how arbitrary a judgement 'on-disc dlc = bad vs. off-disc dlc = good' is to make.

Successful companies plan ahead. Capcom's mistake was a PR one- They overestimated their fans' ability (or possibly just their willingness) to accept the fact that everything ANY video game company does is to make money. Just because NRS will not be making that same mistake does not mean they won't be planning/working-on DLC before the game's retail release.

And you better believe NRS reps will swear up and down that they're the good guys- Not evil, money-grubbing rats like Capcom. Just like with TTT2 when Harada saw that Capcom was down so he jumped up and down on its flailing, broken PR-corpse in order to make a few extra sales.

90% of the fools here ate that crap up, too. It's pathetic.

Aluppoj said on February 5, 2013 at 9:25 p.m.

My old common sense brother. It's always the same old crap isn't it?

The sheep mentality knows no bounds.

And I don't blame NRS for anything. They are handling the DLC the only way the mob FGC will accept.

This "lie to us better", "hide the DLC elsewhere" crap is a friggin joke!

In the FGC we BATTLE for WORSE delivery methods!

Seamless delivery? No thanks. Hide that stuff in a DL file please.

Otter_of_Death said on February 5, 2013 at 11:09 p.m.

If NRS had time to complete DLC prior to launch date, why did they to cut content from MK( that wasn't finished (and we know it was in production due to the leaks). The answer is the DLC wasn't completed. Flynn, Gamma, and Aluppoj, all you guys are really doing is making vast assumptions and then calling people stupid if they don't agree with these vast assumptions.

You see, you need evidence before you can accuse a company of withholding content, and we HAD evidence that Capcom was doing just that(lots of it actually). You might wanna get off your high horses; you'll be able to see reality much better.

Aluppoj said on February 5, 2013 at 11:22 p.m.

gammabolt17 said on February 6, 2013 at 7:29 a.m.

You don't know anything, except that it wasn't on the disc. So when people bought those characters and wanted to use them online, pricks without the characters said screw the compatibility packs and left buyers online still not being able to use those characters they paid their money for. People bitched, but it's not Capcom, so not a big deal. Your only "evidence" for the MK DLC not being finished is that they are not on-disc. You don't even have proof they weren't finished, so just stop with all the evidence talk.

SFxT comes along, characters get found on disc, they tell people the people are on disc for saving HD space and not having to worry about compatibility packs, but it's Capcom, so people act stupid. Now I won't call you one of those people, but come on, man. The only thing I didn't like about the DLC characters in SFxT is that you couldn't buy them separately. Frankly, that didn't even bother me a whole lot, because when you look at the pricing, we got 12 characters for less than 2 bucks a character. That's pretty damn inexpensive.

If your only problem with DLC is the delivery method, just stop. DLC is DLC, it's not right just because they make you think it's not finished. You guys are fine with being pissed on, they just need to tell you it's raining first. If you hate any form of DLC without hating all forms of DLC, you've lost already. It's same shyt, different toilet.

I'm glad people are being vocal about this stuff. It gives me hope that there may be rational minds in the FGC capable of being heard.

You're right in citing a lack of evidence. Gammabolt is also correct pointing out that the lack of evidence is on BOTH sides.

Your only real point is that people like you rage on companies without evidence, while people like us attempt a bit more understanding of the situation without evidence. Now, is that REALLY the point you want to have made for yourself? What the hell kind of logic gives meaning to irrational hatred?

If you want Capcom to fail so badly, go ahead and tell the world not to buy Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Mega Man, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil products, to name a few. Good luck with that.

And hey, if you get your way those brands will cease to exist. So... Hooray for you?

EvilRick said on February 6, 2013 at 2:11 p.m.

@65: ACtually in MK9 there is enough evidence that none of the 4 characters were woked before game releasE:

Skarlet: People hacked the game and found and incomplete Skarlet who lacked voice, finihsers, victory pose, most moveset and hitboxes. Lupinko who leaked most of the game conten weeks before release said "thye have plans for a DLC red ninja female who doesn't have a name yet". She wans't finished until prior game release.

Kenshi: Like here, Mk crew stated "if your favourite character doens't make it, w emay still add it if lot of people ask for it" in this case, after the final roster was revealed, most fans requested for Kenshi who has been a general favourite since Deadly Alliance and so he's the one who made it as DLC, he wasn't anounced to be a DLC in the works until a few weeks before game release, I remember that at the time there was a confusion and many assumed Kintaro was DLC as well yet he turned out to be an unplayable boss character.

Rain: Its well known that originally Rian was gonna be in the initial release but they decided to remove him and make room for Quan Chii; a much more important character in MK universe and way more popular than Rain (remember Ed Boon said at the time "Only characters from MK1 to MK3 will be in this game", however, Quan Chii is from MK4) I don't know if they had developed Rain et the point, but, if Netherreal really wanted to make good profit out of the DLC, then Quan Chii would had been the DLC and Rian in the initial release, not otherwise since Rain isn't that popular and it was conciderated by many "the joke purple ninja character from MK"

Freddy Kruger: Like 1-2 months after game release, rumors of Freddy Kruger and Jason as DLC playable characters for Halloween began to flow. In the end, Jason didn't made it and Freddy wasn't released on Halloween, but it's easy to asume that the rumors began out of an early developement on the character, perhaps even an idea on paper, but not from a full, developed and finished character.

Have in mind as well several other aspects, to beging with; Netherrealm was a "new" developer team, WB would had never risked to work full DLC content before game release when they were not sure if the game was gonna sell well. Remember: In MK-vs-DCU they had plans for Quan Chii and Harley Quinn as DLC character but both were canceled since the game sold way under perform.

Also, MK9's dlc were not mainstream characters, all mainstream were already on the game, unlikeCapcom which sold Blanka and Sakura appart, two big fan favourites. MK's DLC were a new character, a character from MK5, a not so popular character and a guest character probably requested by WB to push on DVDs sales.

To end my long post, the infamous Lupinko leaked most of MK9 content before release, if they had the DLC characters developed since befor egame release, Lupinko would ha dleake dthem like he did on MvC3, UMvC3 and Street Fighter x Tekken, but all he leaked was an unfinished red female ninja with no name.

EvilRick said on February 6, 2013 at 2:22 p.m.

Seriously, people's mentality around here is so...

Capcom: Releases a barebones game with 12 finished characters locked in disc and over 30 costumes locked as well only to charge them again later.

People's response: Oh, that's OK, saving HD space and is just a way of bussines, go for it Capcom!

Netherrealm: Ed Boon responds "Yes" to a question in Twitter if there are going to be DLC characters for injustice.

People's reaction: OMG! Netherrealm buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurn!!!

Otter_of_Death said on February 6, 2013 at 2:22 p.m.

The burden of proof is on you. The difference between an NRS game and a Capcom game is the amount of content, so it's not reasonable to say "NRS is sitting on complete DLC" when they couldn't even finish all the planned on-disc features.

My only real point is that people need to drop the condescending attitudes until they have evidence that their assumptions are right. BTW, I didn't say half the stuff you're criticizing me for. As a matter of fact, I didn't even criticize Capcom: I criticized the comparison to Capcom that's being stamped on NRS. I'm also criticizing the users who call people "sheep" just because others don't buy into their assumptions. That's ignorance in it's most dangerous form.

KombatNerd said on February 6, 2013 at 2:37 p.m.

@EvilRick Actually, Quan Chi and Harley Quinn were completed and going to be released, but that whole Midway situation was going on. There were also rumors/reports of Kung Lao and Doomsday being worked on.

And Ed never said "Only MK1-3 characters were going to be in the game" he said that "if you have a favorite from MK1-3 there's a good chance he's in the game."

FlynnChop said on February 6, 2013 at 2:51 p.m.

You're right, my mistake. All of my points still stand as completely valid, I'd say. They just didn't need to be directed at you specifically.

People tend to react severely to trends that make them uncomfortable. I'm clearly not over the crap-storm from the FGC over Capcom's SFxT DLC. That said, I definitely see a lot of "Company A is still WAY better than those Capcom a-holes", and it burns.

It really is difficult not to be condescending when people behave in such braindead ways.

EvilRick said on February 6, 2013 at 2:55 p.m.

@74 Well, yes that it's true, altough in the end everyone from MK1 to MK3 was in the game, well, except for Chameleon and Khameleon but yeah, nobody really cares for those two. :p

Altough that doens't really change sthe point, if netherreal truly wanted to make good profit out of DLC, then Quan Chii, a much bigger fan favourite would had been the DLC, not Rain, almost none really cared for Rian being at the game or not.

Aluppoj said on February 6, 2013 at 3:14 p.m.

Hey, like I said, I have no beef with NRS. I hope their game does well. And I believe that they are promoting DLC in the only way available to them without sending people into a frenzy.

Good for them.

Still doesn't change the fact that two extremely similar (nearly identical) business models are treated completely different by the FGC.

The same community that bashes Capcom for everything and treats Game X (insert any generic fighter) like the second coming of Christ!

I only ask people use common sense and treat these companies equally.

That goes for NRS also. I hope they are developing and completing the characters now. That's called being cost effective, properly managing resources, and doing smart business. Plain and simple.

That's all.

gammabolt17 said on February 6, 2013 at 3:39 p.m.
