Oddworld's Abe DLC in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale cancelled

Oddworld's Abe DLC in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale cancelled In late December, we reported that Oddworld Inhabitants, Inc were still trying to get Oddworld's Abe into PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Steward Gilray, the CEO of Oddworld Inhabitants, Inc noted on Twitter that Abe was able to make it into the game and was originally planned as DLC for in April or May, but unfortunately they were cancelled.

Yesterday, when Sony announced they cut ties with SuperBot Entertainment and that Sony Santa Monica would be handling all future DLC for the game. Unfortunately, it appears some of the DLC has been cancelled with no intention of releasing it.

This is sad news. The game looked like it was dripping with quality, so it hurts to see it fall into the gutter like this.

That said, even if the game succeeded, Abe was not a good choice for DLC. This guy was hardly popular in his PRIME. I heard good things about Oddworld, but it was never iconic Playstation material, IMO.

Well hearing a cancelled DLC character, thats not good.
Oh well, some things make it others don't.

Thoes who says that the game should be traditional fighter, is completely wrong...

Even if the attacks don't do damage, but even attacks & combos can boost the gauge like other fighter games.

Every fighter needs to expand even if only involves Super Kills, and the true FGC needs to welcome it.

There are times where fans & FGC was never always right, its the passionate developers job to make the games and they always make their own choices, while the true gamers must accept anything if they don't like they should leave it alone.

When comes to video games love & passion is whats the true meaning of being a true gamer, as a true developer they need to follow their own passion and decide of what will be in the game while fans & FGC needs to be at the back room.

It was taboo to rip on this game just because members of FGC was working on this, but I'll be just honest and say it... Playing a lot of video games does not make you a good game creator.

Let's just rip off Smash Brothers but we will change how you earn points in this, we can call it revolutionary and nobody will ever notice it's a rip off... Who the f thought the general consumers will fall for this? Oh yeah that guy at Superbot.
With the privilege to use all the Sony characters, how the hell did they f this up? "I played Heihachi when I owned PS2, so I think he represents Playstation well".
No, F you!

Lack of research, unimaginative game design with the worst planning of a major IP from the very start, nearly everybody on the project were people who worked on 3rd rate games at best... At least Superbot got Sony to sponsor them and everybody there has something worth write on their resume now.

It's a project with such a strong IP that it was almost impossible to F up, and they F'ed it up...

The game plays nothing like smash so why do people keep making comparisons? This game's haters hate it because either A. It's apparently a bad smash clone or B. Because it plays nothing like smash.

I for one have been having a blast learning the game. It's something different. The super system makes you have to work for the V every match. The items are actually useful and don't deserve being turned off like most people are doing. Even people I know that enjoy the game seem to be playing it wrong and just don't understand it the right way. It's not just smash with sony ps characters and was never designed to be. It is it's own game that also happens to be a combat platformer, but with actual traditional fg fundamentals.

@31 The examples you listed didn't have to sell PURELY on their own merits. They were packaged in with Kratos and Big Daddy: characters who actually are popular. And almost nobody I know bought Oddworld despite it's praise. If Sony wanted an iconic character who still sits in the hearts of fans, they should have gone with Raziel. I would have bought a PS3 for that guy, and I can name numerous others who would to.

Damonta said on February 5, 2013 at 5:17 p.m.

Playstation All-Stars DID NOT FLOP OR FAIL. The budget for it was incredibly low, as were Sony's expectations. They made a profit and have even stated that they were more than happy with the sales. It was more of a test to gauge to interest in that type of game for the future.

That being said, Sony completely screwed up beyond belief here. The game is doing well, but not as potentially well as it could have because of a lack of certain classic characters, so Sony's first reaction is to cancel the DLC addition of a character who would fit that definition? That's so nonsensical. I fail to see what they could gain from this. The lisence was costing them nothing because Oddworld Inhabitants really wanted Abe in the game and were basically offering him up on a plate. Sony are just being unreasonable. I mean for quite a while they were apparently ignoring Oddworld Inhabitants' requests about putting Abe in PSAS as DLC. It's like Sony weren't even trying. This could have been the beginning of a future partnership with those guys, they really wanted to be apart of PSAS, but Sony just practically spat in their faces. A terrible business move that's only going to punish the fans and community of the game.

This is my problem with Sony. They never support their own products;
- Eyetoy
- Playstation Eye
- Playstation Move
- Sixaxis
- 3D
- Starhawk
- Twisted Metal
.. and there's much more. So many products they hyped up an then dropped support of within the first month or two. They're like a bunch of kids who can't make up their mind. It's like they have some form of OCD or a short attention span where they can't focus on something for even half a year before moving on to the next "big thing".

godfist314 said on February 5, 2013 at 5:20 p.m.

Damonta said on February 5, 2013 at 5:39 p.m.

The sales were mediocre? In comparison to what? Not every game has the same level of intended success. Just because one Sony exclusive or one fighting game has sold *insert official number* doesn't mean that Playstation All-Stars flopped. On paper the number sounds weak in comparison to the type of numbers you're used to seeing from the average game, but Playstation All-Stars had a less than average budget. Have you played the game? The presentation, content and graphics just scream "low budget". I mean it looks cheaper than your average PSN indie title. The sales that the game made are a decent profit for Sony and a success in the game's own right considering it was nothing more than a test run - a tech demo to gauge interest. Sony's words were "Sales are right on target with expectations and we are happy with them."

xShonuffx said on February 5, 2013 at 8:46 p.m.

The game was just poorly marketed and the presentation visually is lacking. When you look at the marketing that Smash had versus PSAS it was just light years better. I was excited about that game because they made sure I was in front of the computer every day to see what news came out. I did'nt get that with PSAS and im sure neither did the so called fans.

This game was marketed as a hardcore game and im sorry but thats just not what sells today. People play games for fun and I think the majority of people did'nt see this game as fun. Thus the poor sales, thus the cutting ties with Superbot.

just because the partnership that ended was friendly does'nt mean there was no reason. If Halo or Gears of War did'nt do well, do you really think Microsoft would have kept them around because they were nice to work with? Please. Buisness, not personal and thats real talk.

@ Otter_of_Death

Nice to hear someone is willing to try something new instead of just beg for another SF but with PS characters. Honestly smash sucks a fat dick when compared to this game. I would love to see a PSAS 2 if they are just going to let this game die, it clearly needs work but what fighting game didn't 3 months into its lifetime? Christ it took SF4 3 tries to be something worth while, MVC3 two tries, and SFxT two tries.

If Santa Monica drops this game all together instead of just doing its own DLC and balancing then Sony you are retarded. Not every game is going to be the next COD or Halo, those are 1 in a million and COD was one of the worst shooters ever until Modern Warfare 1. Stupid sony.

Atleasy injustice looks f**king awesome so if this game dies I can just pick up that game. I'm pretty bored of the over used capcom fighter formula.

Because all the FGC want a shades of blandness in every game
"Waaaah waah I want health meters and to be like Street Fighter". Seriously bullpoo. Isn't this the reason that people take the piss out of CoD? Because it's the same crap ever year. Yet people want to see the same crap in Sony All-stars with none of their own ideas. Then imagine if they did make it like Street Fighter. There'd be complaints of it being a rip-off because it uses health bars and the characters don't jump as high.

Gamers today are some of the dumbest people you can ever come across.

There's no more evidence than the sales and both the word of Superbot & Sony. The sales were fine in comparison to how little it costed Sony to produce it. They made a profit. That is a success.

Superbot were only slapped together to created Playstation All-Stars. Now it's done and over Sony no longer have any need to stay directly connected to them. Sony rarely ever support their games long-term anyway. This is nothing new.

as a Smash Bros fanatic i brought this, simply because to keep me occupied til the next Smash, personally i liked it but its lack of replay value is abysmal,if people thought MVC3 was barebones...well so was this, the mixed word of mouth didnt help either, the roster was little to be desired, for a fighting game especially a new IP that is ripping off another, think of it like a football game, what players and teams would get the most ticket sales and butts in seats and the game had very little ability to do that, the roster of 20 was terrible, they should of put more characters or atleast waited when the lisence hurdles were over and then, they were their own worst enemy

TrueGamingGuru said on February 6, 2013 at 1:31 p.m.

@62 I can already see that, what you said does reflect of whats going on.

Honestly these gamers or the FGC doesn't even of what makes a game expand or do something different. There are times that Super Kills, Stage Hazards, Gems etc. is the true balance of keeping the fighter games alive because it involves doing something different and despite if certain people hates these elements but "WE NEED IT" for reasons.

I would say that I'm glad people like Omar, Ono, Harada, Ed, Itagaki (use to) etc. are the ones working on the games because they do plenty of stuff that makes fighter games different even keep fighting game genre alive, while fans & FGC wouldn't do anything to make games interesting and they would get nicknamed "Call of Fighters: Modern Unbalancement"

Sometimes developers need to follow their own passion, even ignore certain people would even give them a greater benefit (depends on what action) the only time they need to listen to people is make sure there is no glitches, online problems, or any bugs.

TrueGamingGuru said on February 6, 2013 at 2 p.m.

@Everyone: Thoes who complains about the characters number in general, really shouldn't have the right to complain because there is alot of things that even putting a character in the game can be a major problem.

For starters is when making a crossover that features characters from multiple title genre, there is alot of diffculty to even put a character in the games. Like one they need to deal with certain teams or other companies example Teams: Naughty Dog, Eat Sleep Play, Ninja Theory, Crystal Dynamics etc. Companies: Capcom, Namco, Activison, Square Enix etc.
For thoes that is hoping for Crash, Spyro, Clould, Lara, Sora etc. heres some details...
When comes to Crash & Spyro the company that Sony needs to deal with is Activison, dealing with this company can be a major problem and they will be hard to deal with. This is what prevents Crash to even set foot in Playstation All-Stars, and Spyro's fate is impossible since not only Activision plays hard ball but Spyro is no longer the main character in the Skylanders series.
Now characters like Cloud, Lara, & Sora they are part of Square Enix along with other teams: Square Enix can also be diffculty like there are times that Square will not be willing to put a character in the game, but there are possiblity that they would end up putting one of their Final Fantasy characters to be in Playstation All-Stars but not going to be easy, now Lara she is part of the Crystal Dynamics team and that team said "NO to Lara" plus Crystal Dynamics made a deal with Microsoft to have the Tomb Raider DLC content to be release first on Xbox 360 before other systems, last Sora even if Square Enix owns the character another problem is Disney in general that they might have a say to about him not appearing in the game, because Disney is worried about Playstation All-Stars characters genre they came from even certain items which Disney doesn't want Sora to exposed to the violence of the characters & items.

Plus the games balance & release date is another thing, starter there are times where either characters or online related is what is the main important to the balance and sometimes even adding more characters beyond 20 can be a problem when it comes to patching or balancing. Plus with release dates in general is another thing about the console marketing in general, for years games always have to reach the release date without any delays and they don't get enough time to do alot of things, which ends up not putting certain characters in the game or even stages which DLC is the only thing that can expand characters or stages.

mrambitious said on February 6, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.

Spyro is never joining allstars, he is currently partnered with nickelodeon and a number of other companies which are collabing on a stupid HTML game called skylanders. Spyro has been sold off to the 5 - 10 year olds because his franchise was dead for years. Crash is a maybe. Lets just hope we get DLC at all after Kat and Emmitt!

mrambitious said on February 6, 2013 at 2:35 p.m.

@ KissOfPoison

Your a prime example of why the FGC sucks. You do not own the game AT ALL and claim to know wtf your talking about.

Please go put in your UMVC3, pick Virgil Wesker Doom and leave our PSAS threads alone. No one cares if for the 100th time you wanna bash the game we enjoy, just remove PSAS updates from your preferences and leave us alone you tool.

Almost every game that isn't something you enjoy I see you troll on hardcore, your a child dude grow up already your probably 30+ years old and very, very alone but that doesn't mean you should troll so hard.

No_Surrender said on February 6, 2013 at 2:54 p.m.

In this day and age, you can't expect a first time developer create a game with tons of characters and content as games now are more expensive to make than in the past. It's too risky (look at Kingdoms of Amalur). Which is why I said before not to necessarily compare this game to Melee or Brawl b/c of that. Yes Smash 64 is old as holy hell but look at that game. Only a handful of characters and content were in 64 just like PSASBR. And as GamingGuru said, Sony doesn't own some of the iconic PS1 characters like a Spyro or Crash. Knowing Activision's greedy ass, they probably have to jump through hoops to get them.

I wasn't a fan of the "super kill" mechanic when I first heard of it. When I played the beta, it was meh to me but the more I kept playing, the more I enjoyed it. It's something different and it's one of the things that separate this game from Smash.

But w/e I'm gonna keep having fun and blowin' shlt up with Sweet Tooth. Wish SuperBot the best in their futures.
