Want to earn $7,000? Sign up for the Canada Cup 5v5 SSF4 AE v2012 tourney, cause you'd be the only one so far

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • August 12, 2013 at 9:30 p.m. PDT
In what may be a bit of an unprecedented move in the fighting game community, there's $10,000 CDN on the line for the Canada Cup 5v5 Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012 tournament — but so far no entrants for the event.

The $10,000 pot bonus will be split in a 70/20/10 format, and by my math, a 3rd place finish would net at least $1,000 which would more than cover the $250 entry fee per team. Of course, if only one team enters, they'd be taking home at least a $7,000 pay check, so there's probably some good reasons to sign up.

The Canada Cup is well known for their SSF4 AE v2012 team tournaments, which have attracted players like MCZ|Daigo, Infiltration, DM|Xian, EG|Justin Wong, EG|PR Balrog, RZR|Fuudo, MCZ|Mago, AvM|GamerBee and more than we could possibly name here, in the past.

The CCG team is also throwing in $2,000 pot bonuses for SSF4 AE v2012, and UMvC3 singles tournaments, and a cool $1,000 for Super Smash Bros. Melee, so there's some hefty prizes on the line for those who attend. Scope out the event trailer below.
This year's Canada Cup will be held in Richmond, BC, Canada on September 27-29. If you'd like to register and find out more about the event, make sure you check out their website.

Smorgasboard said on August 12, 2013 at 9:37 p.m.

Or lapchi doesn't have money to fly people there like he used to.

Sick! Can't wait to see the return of the most hype team tournament in the world!

@2 if he has $10k pot bonus, i don't think a plane ticket would be too big a deal.

Actually cheaper to offer a 10k Bonus then flying out all the players to make a 5v5 tournament. Hopefully players recognize there's money on the 5v5 tournament and fly out for it.

Dat eSports money. Wanna see some Daigo action. Mad Catz sent out your team!! EG send out your team! Let's go!!

plan A:
>>fly to canada
>>collect money

scytheavatar said on August 12, 2013 at 10:43 p.m.

IMHO, they should make it a 3v3 instead of a 5v5. It'll be much easier to organize teams for international players that way. I mean, looking at a potential team South Korea how the heck could they possibly come up with 5 players now that Infiltration and Laugh hate each other?

But yeah that money is probably better off being put in the individual events, now that pretty much nobody cares about team tourneys.

Smorgasboard said on August 12, 2013 at 10:43 p.m.

AGE send out your team! Lol.

Maybe if you ran a real tourney and not just 4 games, people would be more interested in going.

Remove Marvel and I'll buy 10 team passes.

xShonuffx said on August 13, 2013 at 12:38 a.m.

You'd need to arrange a team of 5 to go with you to Canada. Not an easy task if your usually a lone shark. Plus the cost of 5 plane tickets. I can see why no one entered. Better up the prize mony, LoL 's you are not I'm afraid.

@14 and 15 look at the ending and read the youtube comments. And try telling me these guys will be willing to be in the same team again.

DRain said on August 13, 2013 at 2:22 a.m.

@21 There is NO proof that they're on bad terms with each other, at all. They acted that way after the match because it wasn't easy for either one of them to play each other.

scytheavatar said on August 13, 2013 at 3:55 a.m.

@22 there were a lot of signs that they aren't on talking terms:

- They were supposed to be on team Wildcard in the EVO team tourney but both bailed out
- Those who went to EVO reported that both of them refused to talk to each other
- Laugh was usually sitting by Infiltration's side giving him advices, where was he during the EVO matches?
- Notice how Infiltration was all gracious and gave brohugs/handshakes to PR Rog and Tokido after the matches. Why wouldn't he give that to his best friend Laugh?

TorTorVega said on August 13, 2013 at 4:39 a.m.

You do realize that sometimes friends have arguments? For all we know they're back on good terms. Don't be drama queens. If they were previously best friends then chances are at some point they'll get over it.

TrishThreesome said on August 13, 2013 at 5:14 a.m.

Will Daigo be there? That's a lot of pot bonus, easy pickings for daigo if he shows up with his topanga friends

Hackstermatrix said on August 13, 2013 at 8:13 a.m.

Mike said on August 13, 2013 at 8:19 a.m.

"...read the youtube comments". You went from unlikely to be credible to incredibly non-credible.

dorayaki said on August 13, 2013 at 8:39 a.m.

@27 Don't be an idiot. Dude has good support on his point of view regarding Laugh/Infiltration.

@28 That's what i was thinking too. But i agree they should have did a 3v3. 5v5 is an add-on event for something like Evo or Shadowloo. Near to impossible to get 5 players together without team sponsorship.

Rahavic said on August 13, 2013 at 8:41 a.m.

I don't think people understand the level of salt that can happen between 2 best friends who play each other just way too much. It's pretty bad if you've experienced it yourself, but you get over it after a little while and it's whatevs. This was the EVO stage though, and obviously that natural salt level is multiplied 10 fold, but I'm sure those 2 are good now.

Me and my best friend literally do not play each other in any fighting game. To the point that we don't even play any fighting game that doesn't have lobbies online lol. We've been playing each other in fighting games for nearly 15 years, and at some points have deleted each other from PSN and FB and not talked for a week. These things happen.

stream_monster said on August 13, 2013 at 9:15 a.m.

Lol @ Rahavic, sounds kinda childish to me. Anywho, it was mentioned even by commentators during EVO that something bad went down between Laugh and Infiltration. Fchamp said he got the scoop on the whole deal after talking to one of them, but couldn't say, or so he claimed. That match was pretty much the icing on top of the cake.

That aside, I hope the FGC doesn't kill Canada Cup. It's a great tourney, and Lapchi always puts on a good show.

DevilMaySpy said on August 13, 2013 at 9:24 a.m.

Infiltration and Laugh hate each other. Anyone who was at EVO can verify this. It's no coincidence that Infiltration has been coming to recent majors alone. With that said, they're not the only good players in Korea, just the ones who travel the most. Capcom's Korean qualifier showed they have more to offer than just Infiltration and Poongko. M. Lizard has a decent Viper.

Mike said on August 13, 2013 at 9:31 a.m.

Good support? Unless someone has talked to them or knows that any of the "facts" are true then there is NO support besides speculation. The fact that he took YouTube comments as undeniably true shows me that what he said isn't credible. Only an idiot believes something as soon as they read it on the internet, ESPECIALLY some guy that believes some guy that got his "facts" from YouTube comments and no other sources.

irrenmann said on August 13, 2013 at 10:38 a.m.

Seth Killian made some crack about Infiltration having to "slay his trainer" or something to advance further. Somehow I don't expect Seth would make even veiled reference to such a topic without knowledge that there was now some separation between the two.

Anyhow, this subject feels a little gossipy and feminine. I recognize that it has relevance to the idea of putting the team together, but since it's up in the air either way, I suggest we simply wait for further developments.

DRain said on August 13, 2013 at 10:54 a.m.

@34 What? Seth wasn't knowingly making any reference to laugh and infiltration hating each other, at all. Y'all gotta stop looking so deep into casual remarks and youtube comments.

GakoTheChef said on August 13, 2013 at 10:55 a.m.

The most lackluster trailer i have ever seen.....we need people to make better trailers now cause almost all trailers are identical

Rahavic said on August 13, 2013 at 11:11 a.m.

@31 Oh yeah it was hella childish, but you get so angry when you learn and play a game with someone for years and years to where you know when they are trolling, counterpicking and taking advantage of you as a player over the game. It leads to alot of salt, but nothing you don't get over.

I did exaggerate a little on the whole not talking for a week but one time my boy did get so mad he erased me from PSN for a night and even blocked me on FB all at once. It more just turned into a funny inside joke afterwards, but yeah it was at that level.

He said that because Laugh trained Infiltration and they were playing each other. He didn't say anything about them hating each other, a broken team, or a separation between them. James Chen and S-Kill sounded surprised when they didn't shake hands after the match. If there was a problem they didn't know about it.

Strider_Hien said on August 13, 2013 at 11:44 a.m.

I get you,Rahavic.I also had a intense rivalry with a good friend that reached those salty levels almost constantly. We played SSF on the SNES like crazy and called each other names angrily, disconnected controllers....You name it.One time,I had to go to bathroom and I paused the game.I overheard the game being unpaused and my Ryu getting an asswhooping.I reached the room in 3 seconds flat...with my schlong almost sticking out.My Mom had take control of the situation and proceeded to kick him out.No SNES for the remainder of the afternoon for me...Crazy memories.XD

I've had my friend turn off his Xbox right after a match ended in marvel. The same friend stopped talking to me for about 5 min straight after I perfected him in sf4.
