No more characters or stages will be released for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, balance patch in the works

No more characters or stages will be released for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, balance patch in the works Word came in today from Sony's Santa Monica Studio that the final DLC characters and stages for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale have been released, as such there will be no new additions to the roster from this point forward.

There was some positive news, though, Sony announced that a balance patch is in the works, and they gave a loose timeline of late this fall for its release — although that's subject to change based on development delays.

Also, the team said that a third set of costumes for Dante, Raiden, Heihachi, and Big Daddy would be available as a free download. These were exclusive pre-order bonuses, and hadn't been officially released. Also, Zeus and Isaac's third costumes will be thrown in as well.

Lastly, the team announced that they would be resetting their monthly tournament leaderboards, every month. Hit the jump to read the full rundown.

Hi guys,

First, thank you for your continued and passionate support for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. We've had a lot of challenges along the way, and we appreciate your dedication and commitment to the game. We understand there have been a lot of questions which we have been unable to answer. Today, we’d like to hit those head on and share our plans for the future.

First off, the tough news:

-- There will not be any new DLC characters or environments released for PS All Stars. We were proud to work with SuperBot Entertainment and they created a great game, but the characters that have already been released to-date represent the full content for PS All Stars.

-- In the course of any game's development, there are always elements that never quite get finished or the team decides not to use in the final game. Some of these additional materials from the game’s development phase have been recently released, but unfortunately these are very far from finished assets and were not included in the final game for a number of production and legal reasons.

On the brighter side, here are our plans going forward:

-- Balance Patch: This is still in the early stages of research and development. Even if everything goes smoothly with the development and implementation, the patch will not be finished until later this fall. In particular, we’re assessing all character strengths, weaknesses, and functionality for adjustment considerations in this patch. We have been monitoring your feedback in the forums, and will continue to follow your thoughts throughout the process.

-- We have a third set of costumes for Dante, Raiden, Heihachi, and Big Daddy that were only exclusively available as pre-order bonuses in the US. While the other pre-order costumes were eventually available for sale through the PlayStation Store, these last four costumes were never released. We are going to release these four costumes on PSN as a completely free digital download to everyone on August 27. We’ll keep you informed as the date approaches.

-- Zeus + Isaac's third costumes will also be made available free. This will require some back-end work, and so these two costumes will go live with the balance patch release later this fall. When they are released, these costumes will also be free for everyone to download from the PlayStation Store.

-- Monthly Tournament Leaderboard Resets: We are aggressively looking into the issue of title belts not being correctly appropriated to some people based on their seasonal performance. We do not have a fix at this time, but will keep you posted on our progress. In the interim, starting today, we are resetting the overall leaderboards, and will continue this on a monthly basis. Monthly seasons are back! Along with this effort we are going to establish a set of community activities that will be communicated on the official All-Stars forums, designed to recognize the top monthly competitors.

On a personal note, we want thank everyone for their dedication to the game. There have been a lot of challenges on the development side, and for the players as well, but it's this kind of passion from players that inspires us to try and move forward, even during difficult times.

*shrugs* Could've been a much different/better game. I say Sony goofed by not making it a big deal in the first place. Superbot tried I guess, but they ended up with a bunch of third party characters that weren't exactly game sellers and gameplay that confused the casual player.

Jennyfromtheblock said on August 2, 2013 at 5:59 p.m.

Damn I forgot about this game

HooliganComboFTW said on August 2, 2013 at 6:01 p.m.

Game could have had a much better roster.

BunnyBoy said on August 2, 2013 at 6:04 p.m.

All they needed were some health bars, and more gamers would have been interested in the title.

The "use supers to gain KO's" thing turned people away from the get-go.

daisetsu said on August 2, 2013 at 6:13 p.m.

nah, all they needed was to pay EVO to have their game as one of the main stage titles, and people would've kept playing this at until after EVO.

ReddChief said on August 2, 2013 at 6:17 p.m.

@#2 If the gameplay confused you i'm confused what is so confusing about it and your like the only one not once i ever heard the gameplay was confusing and health bars just no

I appreciate the dev team for trying something new with this game, even though it didn't work. At all. Hopefully they'll get around to making a new game some day that'll have a system that compliments the game and keeps the players interested, I'd hate to see an interesting concept thrown away so quickly.

Now when will Konami throw their hat in the FGC ring for more Raiden action?

Sad to see any game die, but hopefully next time around the roster won't be so mediocre. That's honestly what turned me off from the start. I still tried it but it just didn't stick with me.

I take this as them experimenting with new stuff. Here's to hoping that next time they do things right.

the problem I had with the game it felt like it had no identity or soul. I played it and did enjoy it, but there was something missing.

I had feared that there weren't gonna be any more characters, sad to see that I was right.
But hey, another balance patch is something at least.
Also, you guys seem to think a sequel is guaranteed. From what I remember the sales were less than stellar...

Yarott said on August 2, 2013 at 6:38 p.m.

OK, so... this game is dead now, right? If anything, the real final DLC Characters would've been Dart from Legend of Dragoon and Munch from Oddworld, if they weren't cancelled. And that one stage from Gravity Rush, too! Well, no turning back now. This game is finally over.

BlackMasamune said on August 2, 2013 at 6:40 p.m.

Back to the Drawing board for PS4. It would be funny if this game had a dedicated community still playing it in 10 years.

TrapcomLovesKayo said on August 2, 2013 at 6:48 p.m.

They already copied most of smash so might as well copy the death by ring outs that would of made the game better.

Kinda sad to see all the post-release roster expansions potential gone to waste. Current game is still enjoyable at least, and hey, BALANCE UPDATE! Woot woot \o/ Hoping to see more if they do decide to make a sequel, or if they just change their minds on this whole thing.

Played this game for a few months after release and I'm not gonna lie, I enjoyed every moment I could with Parappa.
Let's face it though, this game is deader than dead, it had a great run. Either make a new game with better everything or just stop overall.
This game had so much potential that it was wasted to hell, especially with the roster itself.

Sanox said on August 2, 2013 at 7:02 p.m.

character and gameplay choices completely ruined it

insanekyo said on August 2, 2013 at 7:10 p.m.

All I can say is that game had A LOT of potential but seemed to never quite match the initial hype probably due to it's short development lifespan.

LordProsper said on August 2, 2013 at 7:44 p.m.

Well that's legitimately disappointing. I don't see why they're even bothering with a balance patch if the entire community was requesting characters.

I got this game the other day since it was a cheap price and I'm surprise I enjoy it as much as I do. It's a shame there wont be any new stuff for it but it's understandable. Also, the news of a balance patch is great cause they definitely got some stuff that needs to be fixed, hopefully they can make it better with this upcoming patch.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale had a good start from releasing Private & Public Beta before releasing the Final game. (which the fighter genre really needed) The Super Kills is something that adds something new to the Fighter Games in general (something that the gamers should've gotten use to), PSASBR is barely a Smash clone because they play differently and has a different buttons. PSASBR isn't best fighter game, but it was decent. When Sony cut ties with Superbot, and letting Santa Monica Studios continue the DLC content I was getting excited. But when Dart was cancelled, he was just pre-maturely cancelled I even asked myself "What is Santa Monica Studios doing, they were in charge with the DLC." and when I heard they're not making anymore DLC I even ask myself "Was cutting ties with Superbot even a good idea? It feels like Santa Monica Studios don't even know what they're doing." Santa Monica Studios was just silent and just didn't update the situation it just didn't help PSASBR at all.

What if Naughty Dog was in charge of PSASBR instead of Superbot, because Naughty Dog was suppose to be developing PSASBR. Well part of the characters wouldn't change much, maybe a few different ones appearing, even PSASBR could've been a PS4 game after they finished The Last of Us, and who knows what gameplay could've been like.

I think the characters in PSASBR is pretty reasonable for a crossover game that just couldn't get every character from the game. From ones being saved later as DLC, to dealing with other team members, and dealing with third party companies. (like Activision with Crash & Spyro)

PSASBR getting a sequel is possible, but its not going to happen for awhile until the time is right. I would want the sequel to use part of the Super Kill moves, along with some improvements from the first game and new mechanics to add some depth with the gameplay.

TrueGamingGuru said on August 2, 2013 at 8:35 p.m.

@4 What characters would you had in mind, I might even list out of what is possible & not possible.

@6 The question is when it comes to EVO in general is the game even popular, does it have a strong community, and what is the judges going to say. Part of it is that PSASBR is too young, it really doesn't have a developed community unlike the SSB community, and they're is some balance problems along with other problems.

@18 I don't think they wanted their gameplay mechanics to be the same as SSB, part of their gameplay is similar but its not the same.
Even Tekken was clone of Virtua Fighter, should Tekken even have ring outs? Even Mortal Kombat was a clone of Street Fighter, should MK play like SF?

This game is a deception...

Venom_Web said on August 2, 2013 at 9:16 p.m.

This game is so great, it just got screwed over by the layoffs at superbot and the exchange to santa monica, who apparently didn't give a crap about it. Like honestly, my friends and I dumped a solid 6 months or so into this game. it has the online competitiveness of a real fighter but the accessibility of a casual game. thats not to say some casual sack can pick it up and be a button mashing pro, far from it, but they can have a pretty base understanding of the game within a couple matches and get lucky with some supers. I think it hit a perfect balance of casual and hardcore, save for the OP characters like kratos who can square their way to a level 3 or two.
I pray it gets a PS4 sequel with more marketing, like honestly the only thing i saw for PSABR was that cool but ineffective live action commercial for the 2 weeks it was on.

If I had a PS3 I would've bought the game. Is sad it won't have more characters added. Hopefully it'll have a PS4 sequel.

RYU81 said on August 3, 2013 at 4:10 a.m.

$hit game as SBB series only for kids, 10% skill and 90% luck then they call it FG

xShonuffx said on August 3, 2013 at 4:32 a.m.

I think a weak roster and poor presentation was a real turn off. Most of the characters were nobodies or forgettable. The supers to ko also created no tension build up. That's what makes smash so hype. Anything can still happen at 100% damage. Always on the edge of your seat.

If you need think you need %90 luck to win at these games then the problem might be you.

TrueGamingGuru said on August 3, 2013 at 6:06 a.m.

@43 Your actually wrong with the 10% skill and 90% luck. because there is skill with PSASBR because the game has combos, strategy, and has a deep mindset of knowing when to use certain Supers. (trust me I know this game, than any arrogant FGC people)

Fighting Games isn't about traditional arcade fighters like SF, MK, VF, Tekken etc. both SSB & PSASBR are still considered Fighting Games for their gameplay mechanics.

Pachendrix said on August 3, 2013 at 6:49 a.m.

As long as you need supers to kill, making combos and strategic positioning (like smash) useless, this game will remain being dead. The game is crap, but if they just do complete smash rip off, with their life % mechanics, stage kills, scoring, ring outs, and super, it'll be 5854785550 times better. Oh and no cross over stages, it was a horrible idea. And a less boring menu, music, logo and name wouldn't hurt either. In other words, START FROM SCRATCH AND MAKE THE GAME AT LEAST TOLERABLE, you can do much better than this mediocre dead game.

Biggz124 said on August 3, 2013 at 7:25 a.m.

Echo01 said on August 3, 2013 at 7:39 a.m.

They should have just gone all the way and made a full Smash clone. PSA's alternative to the knock-off-screen mechanic just wasnt appealing. Add to that an utter lack of signature PS characters for the more casual crowd to lap up and...well.

BlazinKoolBreez said on August 3, 2013 at 8:56 a.m.

#5 is right about that, not necessarily health 'bars' but some kind of health mechanics could hav made the game waay better, it was one of my biggest problems wit the game n the characters graphics, they sometimes blend in wit the background, making them hard 2 keep track of at brief moments...also a better roster wouldn't hurt, like maybe CLOUD, Crash n Spyro for starters, the ORIGINAL Dante wouldve did no wrong, it featured all these recent PS characters of games I didn't care for..lets not forget forget the graphic design choices, the main menu is pretty corny, the color scheme going is boring, so is charcter selection screen along with the constant corny music
But it was a good idea of thinking of the game

TrueGamingGuru said on August 3, 2013 at 9:25 a.m.

@49 Getting these characters are sometimes far from Sony/Superbot/Santa Monica Studios reach when it comes to including them.

For starter Cloud is owned by Square Enix, that company in specific was considered a notorious company to work with and they don't push out their Final Fantasy characters that much. Cloud was plausible since he was suppose to be in the Michael commercial, but Sony scrapped him because they couldn't make his costume look good. Square Enix could've possibly include their Final Fantasy characters from Cloud & Lighting, but Square Enix was still a problem.

Then comes Crash & Spyro are owned by Activision, that company was huge problem when it comes to getting a single character including ex-playstation members. Crash & Spyro had no chance to begin with them appearing in Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, and Activision were pretty much asking for a crazy demand from Sony. At least Capcom & EA were willing to include one of their characters, but Activision was being a pain.

Honestly the original Dante could've happen, but since all of the characters costumes are based off recent games (including the PS cast) Dante ended up with Ninja Theories version from DmC. That part you can blame Ninja Theory/Capcom on that part, we also could've gotten classic Dante. (based off DmC DLC costume)

Part of the current roster in general is really a reflection of what Sony has to offer when comes to first party characters from each game in general. (I don't count the third party characters) There is still couple of classic Playstation characters.

Ultim87 said on August 3, 2013 at 9:33 a.m.

Honestly, I feel SSM wanted to kill the game to promote the even LESS popular Ascension multiplayer, and as a result no one benefitted. I still love and play PSASBR to this day with a killer Sweet Tooth and honestly? I'm more than a little pissed. PSASBR is the only series with enough pull to make me risk that POS PS4, what with it's lack of exclusives, predownloading of games, flat-out trying to force impulse purchases, lack of backwards compatability even for digital purchases, etc. And by then, Smash 4'd be out anyway, so... Yikes. I just want to see the King, Crash, and maybe the Pomeranian from Tokyo Jungle!

AkumaMishima said on August 3, 2013 at 1:51 p.m.

"The "use supers to gain KO's" thing turned people away from the get-go."

This mechanic just felt awful. In every other fighting game / pseudo fighting game / whatever you want to call it, there was a very visceral, rewarding feel to actually landing hits on your opponents. In traditional fighters, it meant depleting HP bars; in SSB it means your opponent becomes more and more susceptible to getting knocked off. In PSAllstars... nothing.

No Crash, Spyro, or Lara in a game with TWO Coles (who is so unpopular that he isn't coming back to his own game FFS) was a big mistake too. PS doesn't have the stable of recognizable, iconic characters that made SSB so popular.

tl;dr PSAllstars set out to be a watered down SSB from the start and accomplished just that.

DRain said on August 3, 2013 at 3:39 p.m.

@54 even the usual finalists for dive kick in big tournaments are top players from other games...there is no luck in games where all your options are decided by YOU, the player, and there are no factors that aren't predetermined or controlled by the player. But you probably think scrub-friendly games like SF4 are the pinnacle of good fighting games.

pandaman64 said on August 3, 2013 at 4:07 p.m.

There is ABSOLUTELY a level of luck involved in ANY fighting game that has mixup. Their called guessing games for a reason man. You can say instinct, or yomi, or whatever, but at the end of the day, repeatedly guessing well is good luck.

or crappy mixup. One of the two.

No_Surrender said on August 3, 2013 at 4:20 p.m.

I've been a supporter of this game since I was able to get my copy soon after launch. Hell, I was playing it yesterday. This game has a lot of flaws but has A LOT of potential to be something special. As someone who loves Smash, ever since news broke of a "Sony Smash" game I was immediately interested.

The super kill mechanic, IMO, is unique and is what separates it from being a "Smash clone" (lol). At the same time, it can being incredibly annoying (pre-patch Sly's level 1 I LOATHED) and boring. I do agree with others that it can be off-putting. I can somewhat forgive Superbot for the various bugs and glitches being a first time developer and all but come on. More bugs/glitches after patching other bugs/glitches? The roster was a tad bit on the disappointing side. I wish Sony would have put in some more obscure characters like Vahn (Legend of Legagia), Rau Utu (Mark of Kri), or Jen (Primal). And of course Dart. I had no idea who the hell Ness or Kirby were but that didn't bother me. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

That being said, I still love the game. Plan on keeping it and hope to play matches every now and then. I REALLY hope Sony doesn't completely abandon PSASBR. The foundation has been laid. I hope if there is a sequel of some sort, they build upon that foundation and make it rival or even surpass Smash.

BTW, I had no idea that Nintendo were the only company that had the right to make a 4 player brawler. That's like saying Activision are the only ones allowed to make an FPS or Squeenix to make a JRPG. Companies copy each other ALL THE TIME be it in the game industry, food industry, or other industries. Get over it.

RYU81 said on August 3, 2013 at 6:03 p.m.

SF4 is scrub-friendly game,oh next evo will dive kick and SSBB top games instead of ae2012 and umvc3.

i'm still remember when seth say PS all-stars deserve to be in evo and everyone here become mad cuz what he say.

TrueGamingGuru said on August 3, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.

@53 Getting Crash Bandicoot & Spyro the Dragon was a huge problem, because Sony doesn't have control for those characters. Always remember that Activision owns the rights to Crash & Spyro which is the reasons the both of them weren't in PSASBR.

Crystal Dynamics chose not to include Lara for PSASBR, because they didn't want to spoil parts of the new Tomb Raider game. (which wasn't available at the time) She also could've ended up as possible later DLC, (if Santa Monica Studios even continues to work on the DLC) because fans even requested Crystal Dynamics to include Lara in PSASBR as DLC after from a question that Crystal Dynamics when the new game got released.

Having two Coles was Sucker Punch's decision, because they think its best to represent the two separate versions of Cole. The reason is that Cole has a different personality along with the two separate powers he also had. Cole would've been a one character, but he just isn't the same character since Infamous had separate paths for each side.

For Playstation not having a stable of recognizable, and iconic characters has something to do with Sony's history when it comes to the Playstation brand in general. Because Sony is mostly focused on Mature gamer's, mostly make games with guns, (not anything else) or certain titles that certain gamers just didn't grow up with. Part of the gaming verity you see from Sony overall is pretty lacking for true videogames, PSASBR is just a mirror of Sony's history.

I say that it's never to late to let go of DmC Dante. So please this is all I ask for is to bring out another costume that looks exactly like the original Dante the Dante that all the people love you probably dont think that most people have a issue with that after all the disccussions about it but I'm here to tell you that I'm pretty sure that alot of people do. I know for a fact it will sell and if it's for free thats even better it'll boost up the game popularity not much but it'll give it a boost most people stop playing this game once they realize that psasbr wasn't gonna add Dante original look. Yes i was one of thoose people who did i stop playing for some months. but i still love the game so much because its similar to smash brothers a couple months later after injustice had died down after scorpion was weakend because of people complaining I found me some new characters to play with on psasbr and tried my hardest not to pay attention to the DmC Dante. Not having the original Dante on this game at all is by far the most fail that this game has have. I don't care about how his level 3 devil trigger turn out with the original costume. The reason why i say that is beCause that's the only problem I see that's the only reason why you probably haven't made the original costume for him yet. Just give him the look of the demon off of mvc3. I really would enjoy having my Dante in this game instead of that robot it's the popularity that matter so that means the looks do to. The original Dante is famous around the entire Earth this robot Dante some people haven't even heard about him DmC has 1 game out Devil May Cry has 4 and they all are hits one of the best series video game Ive played and trust me I played them all. I really do love the original Dante and I hate that the DmC game was ever invented because I'm pretty sure if DmC wasn't invented..........THE ORIGINAL DANTE .... THE DEVIL MAY CRY DANTE .... WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THIS GAME FROM THE BEING.... SO DmC I HATE THAT YOU WERE EVER INVENTED. :"( PLEASE PUT THE ORIGINAL DANTE IN THIS GAME SOME KIND OF WAY. Even if you have to make a new character just for him I promise you the people and the fans will love it. Go all out for the original Dante just like I went all out for him writing this letter. Trust me if I need to write another letter I will but I think you got the message. And yes I'll copy and paste this on ever page of psasbr if I need to. If you read this message all the way threw thank you and please support the original Dante being on psasbr please. Thank you and have a great day.
