Sakurai did not add the Villager and Wii Fit Trainer as a means to shock fans, feels they are unique and fit well in Smash Shortly after the new Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS were announced at E3 earlier this year, Nintendo unveiled the latest editions to the Smash series: Wii Fit Trainer, the Animal Crossing Villager and Mega Man. These character choices were fairly interesting to many fans and some felt they were being added as a way to generate shock and surprise among players.

Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai talked to GamesTM this month to clarify that these additions were not made as a means to simply do something strange or unusual. Sakurai feels these characters have a very unique style and will fit well in the Smash Bros. universe.

Check out what he had to say below.
The Wii Fit Trainer and the villager from Animal Crossing, there may be some people out there being like, ‘Okay, great, now you’re going out on a limb, you’re trying to do something strange or unusual, but there’s really no meaning behind it, you’re just doing it for…’ I don’t want to say shock value, per se, but just to surprise people. And that’s really not the case. I think these are very unique characters and they lend themselves well to the Smash Bros. family because they bring things we don’t already see.
