Capcom aware of interest for updates to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Sven on why MvC2 characters didn't make cut

Capcom aware of interest for updates to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Sven on why MvC2 characters didn't make cut There has been quite a bit of demand for additional updates to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, so much so that Ryota Niitsuma (the title's producer) and now Capcom USA vice president, Christian Svensson have both weighed in on the subject quite recently.

Svensson stated that Capcom is aware of the demand from fans, and that he wishes they'd be able to make something happen, but for the time being they can't do anything. Niitsuma echoed similar statements.

Christian also discussed why specific Marvel characters who were in MvC2 didn't make the cut, and you can see that response after the jump.

CapcomJuNky: What steps are necessary to push demand for a update to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3? We know that voices are heard through senior executives from the U.S. side of things, but how can fans impact the Japanese executives.

Svensson: Guys, we're aware of the interest and I wish we'd be able to make it happen, but for now there's nothing for me to talk about.

Bs957: Just curious, was there any reason why these Marvel characters were not in Marvel vs. Capcom 3?

Svensson: [...] Decisions about character selections are a combination of what the team thinks would be cool, what Marvel thinks would be cool and ultimately how we get a mix of interesting styles and abilities. Additionally there was some desire to have some returning characters, but a fair amount of the new. The team wasn't just seeking to recreate Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

There's no malice in these decisions and certainly the ones you've mentioned were considered at one point, but for whatever reason or another, some other ones were prioritized over them.

They've addressed they see our desire, now they need to come back and say "we are working very hard to get an update planned and hopefully in development."

Why in the hell can't you people just play what we have? Jesus.

If you're gonna badger anybody, badger Marvel.

trahh said on December 9, 2012 at 8:08 p.m.

@#1 , they mentioned in an interview that they can't because a lot of the people who worked on mvc3 have moved onto other games and they can't just pull them back into working on it. I'm sure if they planned something out they could do it but it seems like too much work for a game that didn't even sell as many as they wanted, to begin with.

shadowassault said on December 9, 2012 at 8:10 p.m.

why must we beat this dead horse....Ah well. I like what I have, if I wanted it to change I said it already months ago. too late to change it unless they are adding more characters, if not I do not care why who or what isn't in this game.

AdaWongLover5 said on December 9, 2012 at 8:10 p.m.

I agree with #1. If they actually come out and say that I wonder where they'd go with the update. I know Capcom, despite popular belief, would be willing to listen to fans but Marvel just has to much publicity stuff planned. Fans probably wouldn't have a voice in any of the Marvel characters.

soulsnatchin said on December 9, 2012 at 8:11 p.m.

id rather them work on somethin else. maybe a cvs3 or at least cvs2 HD remix. no offense to UMVC3 but its fine the way it is. like forreal how many real marvel comic fans even play it tho? all these mofos itchin for scott summers just cuz they knew of him from marvel 2. updates not needed. the marvel community will continue to play this game regardless just like mvc2, and capcom knows this

HooliganComboFTW said on December 9, 2012 at 8:15 p.m.

Let this topic on updates die already its not gonna happen because of the hoops Capcom had to go through when dealing with Marvel

badjab326 said on December 9, 2012 at 8:22 p.m.

The only things they need to fix with this game are the Nova DHC glitch and the 1p only V. Joe Assist infinites (allow 2p to perform them. If they do that, the game is perfect as is.

Though of course we'd all love more characters. But that will never happen.

dubgrass22 said on December 9, 2012 at 8:22 p.m.

meh they could patch a few things foreal i like it the way it is but the netcode sucks and a few kinks worked out would help the game be even more enjoyable

Gpop said on December 9, 2012 at 8:22 p.m.

"The team wasn't just seeking to recreate Marvel vs. Capcom 2"

Ding ding ding, this is the best reason I've ever heard and always thought was their reason as well. As nice as it would be to bring back all the MvC2 characters back, we needed more new characters, otherwise it'd just be more like "MvC2: 3D HD edition" or something.

DaSavage said on December 9, 2012 at 8:22 p.m.

Uh, yeah. Capcom can't just do whatever they want with MVC3. I don't know how much longer it'll take before everyone gets this.

TaoTuna said on December 9, 2012 at 8:34 p.m.

1. They aren't concerned about pleasing 'you', they are concerned about making a substantial amount of money, which ultimate marvel vs. capcom didn't do for them.

2. ssf4 is popular around the WORLD, mvc is really only big in america.

Claymizer said on December 9, 2012 at 9:08 p.m.

I vote if any updates, they give us an online training and Replay Mode. Surely Capcom doesn't need to counsel Marvel about that since it would just be new game modes. I couldn't complain then.

ithachi1 said on December 9, 2012 at 9:18 p.m.

Cashcom is full of s***, they know what characters the fans want and yet they still troll us like we're stupid. Before MVC 3 came Ryota and Svensson stated when asked if MSS (Mags,Storm, And Sent) were gonna be in the game they told us in that interview NO that Marvel wanted to include new characters, not the same character that was in MVC 2, but yet they put MSS in the game but not Cable, and Cyclops that was apart of me team in MVC 2 that's just B.S. Then when UMVC 3 came out only two characters that fans wanted in the game actually made the cut which was Vergil and Strider and then a bunch of filler characters that people probably did not no about, I though Rocket Raccoon was from Star Fox. That to me just shows that Cashcom are not looking out for the fans, but for their pockets. I will not support Cashcom fighting games anymore until they buy a clue.

Dblock209 said on December 9, 2012 at 9:30 p.m.

If they were to make an update.... Throw in Thanos and make the storyline (or theme, whatever) revolve around the Infinity Guantlet. This will fit into Mrvel's plans because of their "Phase 2" movie plans.

And also Capcom can actually throw in a real villain to team up with him like... Gee I don't know.... Sigma? Pretty lame the only real Capcom villain we got was Wesker.

MCPhatman said on December 9, 2012 at 9:41 p.m.

Add more black characters and a new storyline...

KissofPoison said on December 9, 2012 at 9:42 p.m.

@ 2 & 3

Clearly you are idiots, I did not in any way say that I demand an update. What I DID say is that instead of saying they need Marvel approval which I know... I want to hear them say we are working hard at getting their approval for another update.

striderhiryu12 said on December 9, 2012 at 9:50 p.m.

Yeah no need to have a Falco-Style period over people voicing opinion. People will always have requests for stuff like this....same thing going on here is same thing going on for MK9, SFxT, Injustice(even while it's still in the works I know after the release people will still have requests). It's inevitable; nobody's perfect and not everyone thinks the same way.
So chill.
Or if you want to police that and tell people to shut up where last time I checked everyone had free speech on the internet (cough even you cough)knock yourselves out.

Jennyfromtheblock said on December 9, 2012 at 9:52 p.m.

While I am not a fan of some of Capcoms decisions I like how they get the majority of the blame for this constant character bitching and Marvel does not Marvel has characters they want to push or bring attention to whether it be for Movies, animation, or Comics. The frame of mind they had for Marvel 2 may be completely different then this game.

Batmang said on December 9, 2012 at 9:54 p.m.

bobthesupermonkey said on December 9, 2012 at 10:49 p.m.

@33 actually only 5 of the marvel characters in ultimate are part of the x-men (wolverine, storm, x-23, phoenix, magneto) and considering three of them are also avengers, the x-men are heavily under represented (there are 14 avengers if you count nova as one) compared to how important they are to the marvel universe as a whole. I'm not trying to argue as i agree people would complain but people are really stupid which is why we can't have nice things.

Sucks that Amingo, Ruby Heart and Son son got the ax. Amingo was my main.

striderhiryu12 said on December 9, 2012 at 11:19 p.m.

@bobthesupermonkey I'm talking about series characters including Sentinel and Deadpool. Series characters in this case meaning anyone in this universe that is a mutant or significant player in the series. Plus it's like #12 said; in Marvel 2 there were 16 X-Men characters not counting Bone Wolverine since it's technically the same character(heroes, villains, and the sentinel that gives them all trouble), and for all the toning down of X-Men characters (AND going by what Marvel puts in theaters with Fox and Paramount and on our PS3s/Xboxes showing that they love being joined at the hip to Activision) we now have 14 Avengers in UMvC3. There was plenty of this merchandising craze back in MvC2 days but now with Marvel Studios doing major motion pictures basically giving Marvel even more free money, MvC4's gonna be whoever's still popular in comics, Activision, action figures and in theaters too. And they have to bow to Disney half the time so that's another hitch to deal with for Capcom.

DumbDLC said on December 9, 2012 at 11:28 p.m.

Capcom: dont be silly why would we give you stuff when we can make you buy DLC

mozart0341 said on December 9, 2012 at 11:35 p.m.

I just wish they would tighten the net code by removing some of the stages background animations in stages like the laser light show on the heli-carrier,snow fall and fire works on Tron stages, etc. Remove some hit effect animations. Its reasons like this is why TTT2 online is so good, they removed a lot of the background stuff for online, the current Gen systems just cant handle high pace fighters with super smooth online over a wide area with out these kind of tweaks.

chipndip said on December 9, 2012 at 11:49 p.m.

@41: SF X TKN's online is also pretty good at fighting lag, but then again it also sacrifices certain things like sound quips when it's fighting lag. You're right though. Modern fighters gotta step up the net-code.

Mac_Gargan said on December 10, 2012 at 4:26 a.m.

People love this series, and leaving so many of the iconic legacy characters out was a poor decision that could have been avoided if the release window for Ultimate had been fair for CAPCOM.

The right thing to do for fans is to release characters in 4-pack DLC, with a mix of old and new, more villains, gals and yeah--some brothers and other ethnicities--why not?

I'd pay 15.00 for an offline 3 vs 3 mode, too.

All we fans are saying is that we still want more. There's not harm in that--especially when SF and SFxTK are getting updates. I don't need free, my wallet is open for more MAHVEL.

JiCi said on December 10, 2012 at 4:33 a.m.

A shame really. SSFIVAE and UMvC3 are the most popular fighting games right now, wouldn't it be wise to update them?

Also, I'm not buying that Marvel is a complicated partner.

rie_dude said on December 10, 2012 at 4:58 a.m.

Some people in here need to grow up and calm down. Capcom is a tiny little fly compared to Disney (Marvel). Don't expect an easy ride with a ton of Disney IPs. Talk about 'greed' and all this crap, how many developers spend as much time talking to fans as Capcom.
Capcom has to share a hefty amount of profit with Disney while Capcom is stuck with all the hard dev't work. If you want the content real bad PESTER DISNEY.

*end rant*

I'll say it now, we won't be seeing a Marvel 4 for a LOOOONG time. Not unless Disney's stock plummets.

ChrisVega said on December 10, 2012 at 6:13 a.m.

Truth be told I don't know why this is a topic anymore, everyone knows that capcom is a business and any business is about making a profit. Regardless of what they tell us there will be an update to UMvC3, SSF4 AE2012 and hell once people start playing SFxT they will put 10 to 12 more dlc characters in the game because it makes money. This is why they always say we don't have information at this time because if you know you're getting what you want it kills the hype and surprise and that is one of the best aspects with fighting games. When it comes to marvel they are in phase 2 when it comes to movies and have like six films coming out in the next two years so what better way to get exposure for their characters than to put them in a game, so be patient it's gonna happen.

mrdrofficer said on December 10, 2012 at 7:03 a.m.

I'm sure this thread is mostly done, but I think this is clearly a sign that rather than a new game every year (which is amazing), fighting fans are ready for the LoL-style of game where we have one with sustained updates for many years. Look at AE, four updates and we still aren't satiated. It's that good. UMVC3 came out last November and we still want more even though people complained and we got new levels and 10 characters. And now Cap's got a whole new game that demands their attention, not counting the DS and CapvCap inevitable future.

But if they could, they should. And look into a sustained update in the future, Cap. We would support it. And your track record shows you would balance it if we request it and support it. So let's all get along, eh?

This game has a huge following still, i'd say more then sf x tekken ever had, if capcom was smart they'd talk to marvel and get more DLC planned for this game, characters like venom, gambit, cyclops, thanos, guile, bison, captain commando, mega man, some other darkstalkers etc this game is simply too much fun to let die, its the funnest fighter i've ever played from capcom

chipndip said on December 10, 2012 at 2:30 p.m.

@69: No, I don't agree. Ms. Marvel is plain as hell, never heard of Enchantress, Ultron, or Vision either. Loki would've been decent to replace RR with, but how in the fk are characters like Dorm, Task Master, and Nova bad characters? They're implemented very well, especially Task. Phoenix, believe it or not, was put in due to popular demand. A lot of dudes wanted him in, and Capcom put him in. Much like Ghost Rider and Strider. Not sure about F. West, but New Jill is just bad, rather than "boring". Hsien-Ko suffers from the same thing due to her HORRIBLE mobility. Still, for the most part, the cast is pretty good. Way better than most of the characters you listed. Who even knows what the hell Red Earth is atm?
