The runback: Louffy086 (Rose) vs. Mago (Fei Long) in Super Street Fighter 4

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • March 7, 2011 at 1:02 p.m. PST
After Louffy086 (Rose) and Mago (Fei Long) played in their first money match at the Beat By Contest tournament, they did a run back for 200 Euros, or about $280 USD.

WorstGiefEVER posted the footage on his YouTube page, which was recorded by StarNab. Here's an embed.

Nice sweep by Luffy, Mago just couldn't find an answer solid gameplay by both.

cvs said on March 7, 2011 at 1:24 p.m.

Someone went home $280 richer.

That's right, you don't f**k with Europe!
Mago, great player, but way overrated. 2dgod? Lmao!
Dude wins an online tournament and people start riding his d*ck and say he's better than Daigo. Daigo's been on top for almost two decades, winning tournaments all over the world.

Luffy coming up. That was a beat down he handed Mago, who most people say is the 2nd best player in the world. Rose must be a bad match up for Fei but even then... that was rape.

rrenn said on March 7, 2011 at 2:33 p.m.

Someone was richer in that room, is very good bet money, that I'll have to do with friends ^ ^

Grimmjow316 said on March 7, 2011 at 2:52 p.m.

@4 sorry about that but if it wasn't me someone else would have.

Don't sleep on Europe though they stepping up. But is it true that there is no AE over there?

OG said on March 7, 2011 at 2:52 p.m.

I'm glad that won't happen in AE.

Lol Mago got hustled. He won the 100 euro money match the other day and lost the 200 euro money match. Good set. Someone went home $140 dollars richer today.

WorstGiefEVER said on March 7, 2011 at 3:03 p.m.

Both matches were 200 euro and he (Mago) did not win the first one.

gaffel123 said on March 7, 2011 at 3:11 p.m.

@Samurai How is mago overrated? He beat europes best player alioune and raped the rest except luffy for some reason..

Gorehound said on March 7, 2011 at 3:25 p.m.

It sucks really bad for Rose now because her U2 is awful in AE and Fei is S tier.

topdawg122 said on March 7, 2011 at 3:26 p.m.

Luffy definitely knows that match up playing starnab, but man his spacing seemed perfect. Mago may be a little too used to AE and probably doesn't play any real good Rose players. Hope both these dudes go to Evo so they can run it back again.

SAMURAI said on March 7, 2011 at 3:34 p.m.

@ Hitstick
No, the fanboys and Daigo haters say that.

@ gaffel123
Common man, he is good but he is overrated. People talk about him like he's a god or something. But he hasn't won any big tournaments outside Japan. He even had to counterpick against JSMaster at the Canada Cup.

SlimboKice said on March 7, 2011 at 3:38 p.m.

Mago is a really good Fei player but after seeing this, he needs to really learn the Rose matchup. I still have respect for his Fei but it's like Daigo against Sim players. Daigo has lost to Arturo Sanchez, Ryan Hart, & Filipino Champs Dhalsim so obviously no matter how good the player, unless you MASTER every matchup you'll wind up getting scrubbed out against a top opponent who chooses a good counter

powdertoastzman said on March 7, 2011 at 4:18 p.m.

mago overrated?? u guys are stupid lol

Super_Shoto_Fighter_4 said on March 7, 2011 at 4:25 p.m.

Nice one Luffy. Finally Europe getting some respect.

packz93 said on March 7, 2011 at 5:11 p.m.

Mago isn't overrated, he's as good as he's made out to be but Louffy clearly outplayed Mago TWICE!

Stop trying to make excuses for him losing "he doesn't really know the matchup" isn't an excuse. The games been out long enough so he SHOULD know the matchup. Also, how can you say he doesn't really play any good Rose players? How do you know what matches he's played? He could of played Sako's Rose 100 times for all you know. Again, no excuse.

"Mago is too used to AE" He obviously isn't because he was using HK CW to go through Roses blockstrings. No excuse.

Europe have always been good at SFIV, we just aren't as exposed as America or Japan. I think it's time America just admits that we are as viable in SFIV as yourselves. Japan have acknowledged some of Europes top players and so should America.

crispylinks77 said on March 7, 2011 at 5:17 p.m.

@ 2 & 18

Spoken like a true Daigo d*ck rider. You do realize that your beloved Daigo counterpicked Mago in the same exact tournament. Think before you speak.

crispylinks77 said on March 7, 2011 at 5:22 p.m.

Lol @ 22

I'm not trying to be biased or anything but almost everyone from Europe was destroyed in the Canada Cup by the few American and Japanese players that were there. The only good ones were JSMasters and Air.

With that said, a few GREAT players does not make the overall scene of an area great. In SFIV, America and Japan has a bigger number of great players.

crispylinks77 said on March 7, 2011 at 5:25 p.m.

^ If I recall correctly, top 8 consisted of 2 Japanese (Daigo and Mago), 4 American (Gootecks, Mike Ross... the rest idk), and 2 Canadian players (Air and JSMasters).

I could be wrong, it was a long time ago. If I am, feel free to correct me.

packz93 said on March 7, 2011 at 5:28 p.m.

I'm not taking any offense to that comment btw but I don't remember any European players going to Canada Cup.

Anyway, I already know that Japan and America have a larger number of players and America only have a handful of GREAT players. Japan are in a league of their own in terms of GREAT players but in Europe you only know of the players that have been GREAT for ages.

What I'm trying to say is, Europe is a little less exposed than America and Japan so you don't really know all the players that Europe have. I can tell you now that there are a lot of good newcomers with the potential to be GREAT players (similar to how Vangief rose to fame etc).

gtfopanda said on March 7, 2011 at 6:09 p.m.

@ #23

Mago himself said that matchup is 6.5 if not 7.3 for Fei, why shouldn't Umehara have done that? He even won the match, and when you're a pro this game is about winning.

Oh wait, this will make me the umpteenth dickrider, right?

Anton said on March 7, 2011 at 6:26 p.m.

No excuse by Mago, it was a good match, but Luffy knew the match much better than Mago knows the match.

There is ZERO excuse.

Match is in Fei's favor btw.

IMO, Mago only lost because he was misreading spirals. HK spiral is -2 at worst from the ranges he's doing it, and yet he tries to punish with cr. lp rekka.

Rose is gdlk. Luffy is the best. Better than Sako, other than footsies.

makaveli2004 said on March 7, 2011 at 6:59 p.m.

@#28 (anton)
How do you assess that Luffy's Rose is better than Sako's. Didn't Sako dominated Alioune who mostly owns Luffy. And Alioune is used to the Rose matchup. In any case, they are both great players in their own rights. I'm not gonna put one over the other one. But Sako got some crazy combos with Rose.

RandomDP said on March 7, 2011 at 7:12 p.m.

Stay free May-go!

goukibuki said on March 7, 2011 at 8 p.m.

Why is this getting so much play. There were much better matches at the competition than this. Why hasn't the Allioune vs Sako/ Cammy vs Rose match been posted?

You wanna see Rose at the very highest of levels? Watch that match. Can you even fathom a Rose beating a top level Cammy, arguably the 2nd best Cammy in the world. Post that fight Catalyst.

shinshom said on March 7, 2011 at 8:15 p.m.

or maybe Mago got confused by the AE differences since he might have already ajusted to the new changes and maybe that matchup changed a little bit.

Just a guess...., ppl saying Mago is overhated is just funny cause he is top player material years ago, in CVS2 he proved that.

DarknessFallz said on March 7, 2011 at 8:34 p.m.

Good thing this was ssf4 cause if it was Æ things would have been way different. Ppl complaining about her u2 are ridiculous, an ultra than does 240, that can be blocked, and broken by so many moves is not OP. Dictator's short sk pressure is more fearsome than rose's u2

Anton said on March 7, 2011 at 9:41 p.m.

Luffy plays Alioune all the time, therefore they know the match up against eachother more than Alioune knows Rose.

HOWEVER, Alioune knows Luffy's Rose whose style is different from Sako's Rose.

Let's also take the fact that Sako is Sako, who is the #1 Cammy in the world, therefore knowing the Cammy match up as Rose, as well as knowing the Rose match up as Cammy.

EnsignHiro said on March 7, 2011 at 10:42 p.m.

Nice match and grats for luffy. seriously mago got owned but he still had some nice setups and everything as usually. I know most would comment back saying you do better but he did get owned ( he lost 5 games straight ). I thought before i watched the match that luffy would lose but im glad he won because there should be great players for fighters out there everywhere in the world that way everyone can learn from there mistakes and misconceptions of what they think is right but is really not useful or just wrong.

Hope to see more matches similar to this one in the future ( i mean players you think would lose but actually end up winning. Thanks Catalyst.

bananainsaneface said on March 7, 2011 at 11:35 p.m.

Who is this match up supposed to favor? Only Rose/Fei Long players answer please.

vryu said on March 7, 2011 at 11:45 p.m.

yes, Mago doesnt know the matchup. You can see it when he doesnt seem to know how to hit to punish guarded EX spiral (-6).

Only 1 godlike rose in Japan => Sako.
And Sako doesnt play AE, and is too far away to play Mago.

BUT luffy won the first money match. Then Mago asked him for a second one and Luffy accepted, and won again.

Luffy deserved to win. That's it. So stop making excuse (especially bullsh*t like "mago used to play AE"....)

And about the eternal debate between american and european:

After Beat By Contest, tokido and sako said that the level in Europe is higher than USA...

TazzxX said on March 8, 2011 at 12:26 a.m.

...for Mago, that the guy recording this is the best Fei-player in EU and friend with Luffy, they play all the time against each other, so Luffy knows this matchup againts a top-3 in the world Fei.

So yes, Mago should hook up with Sako before his next moneymatch with Luffy

29once said on March 8, 2011 at 12:35 a.m.

@ bananainsaneface, I play both Rose and Fei (although mostly Rose) and I think the match up it's pretty even. They both play footsies at a similar range and have good pokes and safe specials at that distance. I think Fei could have used his overhead more and try to crossup Rose as she is a bit weak against that.

Grimmjow316 said on March 8, 2011 at 1 a.m.

@Vryu & WorstGief will there a be a team Eu heading to U.S. for EVO I'm asking out of curiosity plus I want to see Euro Gief (raises fist)

As to the Mago overrated argument IMO he is I would say one of the top 3 in Japan only other two of course are Daigo & Tokido with Sako coming in at #4. I say this because I look at those three (counter-picks) aside like the three starters in a PKMN game one holds an advantage over another. I look at it like this

Daigo (Ryu) can beat Tokido (Akuma) but loses to Mago (Fei)
Then Tokido beats Mago but loses to Daigo
Finally Mago beats Daigo but loses to Tokido

Yes I know the PKMN comparison is laughable but in most matches Tokido has defeated Mago pretty good while having much trouble against Daigo while Daigo has to counter to even beat Mago because his 1st character can't stack up. No excuses for Mago since he could have gathered data from the first set and come up with a counter. So not an excuse but really Mago didn't take from his loses and Luffy played the best a high lvl Rose player can.

WorstGiefEVER said on March 8, 2011 at 1:18 a.m.

There is no eu team set to come to evo because of the cost - it is quite expensive and beyond the reach of many players. We need to come up with sustainable ways to send players there. Personally, I am more focused on sending more players around Europe first.

Grimmjow316 said on March 8, 2011 at 1:25 a.m.

diago lose dahlsim = daigo cant play to dahlsim (from trolls)

dahlsim player how many years is he on top or winn a big tournaments????

daigo = pfffff if i can remmember daigo winn and have status 16 years.

iff top players lose on that day means nothing.

crispylinks77 said on March 8, 2011 at 4:38 a.m.

@ 37

I thought you were making a lot of sense until I saw your name. You can't judge which area is better from Tokido's and Sako's comments. Tokido changes his opinion everyday while Sako hasn't played out of Japan other than that one time he was in Cali and now recenlty in Europe. That's just two chances to form an opinion for Sako. So his opinion is irrelevant.

Way to be unbiased.

goukibuki said on March 8, 2011 at 5:57 a.m.

Disagree. Cammy vs Rose is like a 6.5/3.5, doesn't matter if the Rose player is a Grandmaster Cammy player or not.

What does matter is that the Rose player is also a Grandmaster Rose player. Best Rose player in the world. Watch the BBC stream if you need proof. I guarantee Luffy and Arturo would agree.

Kennn said on March 8, 2011 at 7:21 a.m.

1)there were no EU players at canada cup duhhh
2)EU in terms of the level of top players is near or equal to US, but US has a lot more (Major) tournament players than EU due to huge national scene, which in the end makes US above EU imo
3)Tokido is not #3 in japan lol. arguably not even #5. you are forgetting players like momochi kindevu iyo and RF etc... just because he has come out to US doesnt make him; > the rest of japan
4)Mago is not overrated, he just needs to play better against rose. sakos rose owned him also at this same tourny

goukibuki said on March 8, 2011 at 7:31 a.m.

Tokido not top 5? His past years resume begs to differ. He has stepped his game way up since Evo 2010. Wisen up.

Not top 5 really as for momochi he only made a splash in the us with Ken lets not forget he is the whipping boy to the three I mentioned above look at godgardens.

@45 I'm sorry but a couple of things number 1 did you just call Luffy a random player, also Daigo has been shown he can't beat sim consistently which is why he went to Cammy when he thought Ryan Hart was going to use sim. Ferdi the most I've heard of you is boosting, that YouTube video of losing to a rog player and the extremely pathetic rage mail and finally back in vanilla when starnab bodied you. Also Fchamp won a major in the us by beating Daigo showing his lack of patients to the match up.

NumeroGaijin said on March 8, 2011 at 10:42 a.m.

I have played Fei since ssf2 and Rose since alpha up to even now. And the matchup to me is in ssf4 between the two is definitely even thanks to changes to Rose and at worst I would say its 5.5 in favor of Fei. Fei MUST push her to the corner or else he will be forced to play run up and block because although Fei is a poke master she can and will out poke him and her having a fireball doesn't help Fei either. But once Rose hits the corner this match turns from sugar to s@#!. Reason being is Rose so much as whiffs anything then its either chip or real damage. He must keep her there which will eventually force her U2 and then its back to her footsie keep away because Fei can't keep her at bay when shes roaming freely. My perception of the match was that Mago knows the match but always remember that every player plays differently with their character. He gave Mago a different look. Also Mago was using SF4AE tactics on him as well which is why you saw him do 2 rekkas instead of the old one and done...seeing how the 2nd rekka is much more safe in AE. Next time those two meet though Mago will have something for him. So plain and simple Mago got outplayed and couldn't get a handle on his Rose.

craziryu said on March 8, 2011 at 1:50 p.m.

@vryu yea its crazy how a whole continent (Europe) is better then 1 country(USA). SO AMAZING!lets not get ahead of our selves alrite guys. ryan hart never got top 8 at a US major for street fighter 4(vanilla and super) and thats including the salty suite at evo. starnab didnt even get top 12 at seasons beatings. Dieminion(american) is owning up ppl in EU and just won the WGC beatin the crap out of luffy and OOOO yea he beat u in beat by contest didnt he? also i forgot that justin and marn took 1st and 2nd last year at WGC.

metaf4 said on March 8, 2011 at 1:59 p.m.

MAGO got swept!!!! Plain and simple. I think he almost got completly swept. (Mago won only one round in total!?!)

Mans can say what they want bout Mago being the best or Daigo, or Sako, JSMaster, PChamp..whatever, that's your bias and people have their reasons. But in the big picture of things...Louffy086?!?! Who the fuk is this guy!? Ok, first of all I know I just lost half my readers by saying my last line. I expect hate mail for it...but when I explain myself in my next line and y'all still hate on that statement, it proves that y'all just want to hate on mans for anything.

The reason I say who the fuk is this guy is because if I were to say "list the 5 best players of ssf4" damn it, if I gave mans top 10, NOBODY would put this dude on the list. Yet MAGO could barely take a ROUND!!! Ya'll can talk tiers all you want, but last time I checked...mans like Daigo, PChamp, Gamerbee, and so on don't use top tier characters, so that doesn't give Mago any excuse to not even win a single Match!?! And Im sure that this Louffy dude doesn't play HALF as much as Mago. So experience is out the window as far as excuses go.

What im getting at is that maybe this proves that if you stick to one play style, be prepared to be downloaded. Man's have studied Mago's Fei for years and look....nothing surprises us anymore when he plays. The dude pretty much tried the same dumb strategy each and every round trying chicken wings and wiffing jabs trying to land rekkas till he had nothing left and ate about 20+ spirals each round. You would think by the 3 match he got raped on, he would start changing tactics or suck it up and change characters. I mean, there was actual money on the line.

Whatever...If that was Tokido, Daigo or Sako, im sure they would've switched up styles or gameplay strategies and adapt to the situation. Im just dissapointed watching vids like that. Mago looked like an online scrub trying the same thing over and over and looking FREE! I bet he felt even worse looking at the results screen, showing he just got FOLDED 4 straight!

NumeroGaijin said on March 8, 2011 at 2:13 p.m.

Just because Mago or anyone for that matter uses so and so character does not mean he shouldn't lose a single a match. That made no sense. I agree with you on the part about him playing one particular style and that he should have changed to adapt. But overall in order for this to truly mean something special he must beat Mago on a consistent basis. Meaning not one or two days of tournament play. Luffy must dominate Mago over time am I right? Yeah he beat him what two days in a row...sweeping him in the 2nd money match correct but can Luffy do this consistently each time they meet. I think time will tell. Always remember that Luffy's defeat over Mago this time has no bearing on his many defeats over Luffy. Not hating on Luffy for winning because he did his thing period. But question is can he keep it up??? Personally I hope so though I like the way Mago uses my favorite character.

metaf4 said on March 8, 2011 at 2:18 p.m.

Ok sorry. Correction....2 rounds in total. (the very first and somewhere else well into the 3 or 4th match)

metaf4 said on March 8, 2011 at 3:20 p.m.

I understand that point, and yeah...maybe I could believe that if he was just a high level player. But this is MAGO dawg...this isn't just some "good" player out there. This is one of the best...argubly the best SSF4 player out there hands down, and he thought that chicken wings and spaming jabs was going to get the job done. Naw man....there's no excuse there. Stop the chicken wings and focus dash in there and throw....use an ultra after rose does his 15+ crouching medium punches that we all know hes cancelling into a spiral. I think only once Mago figured it out and did an uppercut but never did it again. just kept on getting chipped down until he had no choice but to take chances and run into another crouching med into spiral or Ultra.

I don't know man....I've seen this matchup way too many times and with that playing style Mago should've changed to Ultra 2 where Rose wouldn't be so Free to spam medium attacks....but NOOOO Mago just brain farted like he had money to waste and fast rematched without even giving even one thought of switching Ultras. I mean, if you ain't gonna use your ultra anyways, at least have the threat out there to at least keep Rose honest from doing free moves.

Mago landed also on many attempts full hits on his chicken wing kicks that he could've used his Ultra 1 and applied more pressure. Did he?! Naw...i'll just let you get up and use your Ultra 2 on wake up so I can have a couple orbs in the teeth or take some more block chip damage. Not to mention the buch of walk up throws he was raped with..geez

@ goukibuki please learn english. and find out what the word arguably means. i never said tokido is not top 5

@ Grimmjow316 you seem to only remember selective things. LMAO @ "momochi being the whipping boy." lets talk godsgarden 1st. Momochi raped mago in GG2 it was so embarrasing, and he raped Tokido in the last online GGs2, 3-1. i wonder if u forgot this or didnt know. Kindevu also beat TOkido in the last online ggs2 and also SBO 2010. more research before you make such false asinine comments about momochi. lets not forget he raped US at SBR. his only loss was to gamerbee

2nd. you're very mainstream with your knowlegde. if we now look at major tournaments, the ones way bigger than GG and beatbycontest. Momochi + Kindevu, won the 2010 japan nationals and SBO 2010. beating mago and Tokido enroute. RF got 2nd in japan nationals 2009 and won it in 2010. he also won SBO 2010. Iyo won japan nationals 2009, and got 2nd in SBO 2009. now just because we dont hear a lot from these guys does not mean they are not rated higher than TOkido in japan, because they are, and their tourny wins shows it. and just because tokido daigo mago are so well known in US does not make them 1, 2 and 3. sako is rated higher than tokido, BBC is the 1st time tokido has ever beat him, yet he barely did it with sako using rose.
im now saying tokido isnt top 5, but he is definately not number 3.

@kenn well I will admit my knowledge wasn't complete btw I did mention US forgot to capatalize It but it's hard to get a read on momochi at times some days he's on fire others he's not guess it depends on the tourney.

goukibuki said on March 9, 2011 at 9:19 a.m.

First, let me take back the "Wisen up" I slung at you, it was rude.

Secondly, I understand what the word "arguably" means, I used it quite fine in post #31. I just cant see how anyone can argue Tokido out of the top 5. Maybe a year ago, but not currently.

As the rest is all MY opinion.

For me, the fighting game scene is a "what have you done lately" affair. You cant cite things Momochi did in Vanilla as to why he is a top player "right now." What's Iyo done lately? I rather love his Ibuki, but he doesn't really compete anymore.

SBO is a team competition, I do not consider it a very accurate judgement when discussing individual rankings. Which is what we were discussing.

And I highly regard those who travel outside their comfort zone/country and compete at a very high level. This is probably the biggest factor to me, on player ranking. Which may not be fair as not everyone get that opportunity.

I'm just sharing my opinions, and I invite you to share yours.
