Marvel vs. Capcom 3 demo won't happen, Sven talks DLC options

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • November 23, 2010 at 2:19 a.m. PST
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 demo won't happen, Sven talks DLC options Capcom's Christian Svensson made a ton of posts regarding the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom 3. He touches on a number of subjects including that there will not be a demo release of the game, DLC (Downloadable Content), more silhouette speculation and a number of other topics.

Hit the jump to see everything.

What are the chances of a downloadable MvC3 demo being released?

Svensson: Sorry, but zero percent. As with Street Fighter IV, there will be no demo for Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

How much is the MvC3 special edition content worth, for example the DLC characters?

Svensson: We're not talking about DLC pricing yet... but it's an OUTSTANDING value.

For reference, the Marvel digital comics sub alone is worth $10.

I don't care about the other SE stuff, I just want to know how much Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath will cost.

Svensson: I'm not sure when we'll be revealing the DLC pricing. If all you care about is the DLC, pack and there's a $20 differential as a promotion somewhere, I can safely say that two characters sold individually will absolutely not cost $20.

I don't agree with the decision to include DLC fighters in MvC3. This is just wrong.

Svensson: Suffice to say, there are differing views on DLC. Everyone needs to decide whether there's value in the offering or not and make your purchasing decisions accordingly. That's true not just of MvC3, but of all games.

As I've stated in prior interviews, DLC is part of the business model these days given the massive costs of production and can be the difference between a profitable product and an unprofitable product.

Since MvC3 is finished, can we know the total amount of characters?

Svensson: All in good time...

What's up with the cover art for MvC3? How come the unannounced characters aren't on there, does this mean the other people left to announce are too low profile to include on the front of the package?

Svensson: The fact that there are still unrevealed characters has no bearing on the contents of the cover. We couldn't possibly put every character on the cover... there's just too many.

Will Best Buy have MvC3 Special Edition in the U.S.?

Svensson: I suspect so. They usually do carry special/collectors editions. I won't know for certain for a couple more weeks though.

Do you know every location MvC3 Special Edition is being shipped to, including mom and pop stores?

Svensson: I won't know every location, I'll know if the accounts we're direct with have ordered (the big six retailers that are 60-70% of the business). We will have some units allocated to our distributors who in turn will be able to sell to smaller retailers, but I suspect most of the volume will be allocated to the major accounts.

As I've said before, I'm expecting the overwhelming majority of these units to be allocated to the retailers who are supporting pre-orders for them.

Are these images proof that Frank West is in MvC3?

Svensson: Sorry guys, not commenting beyond a word of warning... do not assume.

Also, an image of what is supposedly the Japanese cover art for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 also surfaced. Here's the graphic.

Japanese Cover Art = Win

Birdie said on November 23, 2010 at 3:11 a.m.

Get rid of Granov's version of the artwork for the NA version and give us the Japanese version instead. NA Capcom game covers NEVER look as good as the Japanese versions. Grrr...!
Also, while we're at it..

NOW there's room on the cover for my boy - Juggernaut!
(Stfu if you don't like him. He was my main on MVC2. Lol)

DevaPrincess said on November 23, 2010 at 3:21 a.m. about that. The pics I posted on Capcom-Unity (the Frank West (Exact Pose) and MvC Japanese Cover Art) got posted on here along with the Thread I started there (Can we know the full roster amount) made their way here..and I got credited..thats pretty cool.

Ex_Ein said on November 23, 2010 at 3:30 a.m.

Well they want to keep everything low key, well I don't mind just want to know pricing of dlc characters and who is on disc.

tokyobassist said on November 23, 2010 at 3:53 a.m.

Hopefully we won't see a ridiculous amount of DLC. I wouldn't mind paying if the characters are worth playing. I'm still hoping I can get at least 3 characters from MvC2 (Venom, Strider and CapCom). I'm guessing Zero is filling in for X which sucks but at least one cool character is repping the MM series. Tron is just GARBAGE.

And no Storm or Sentinel...they are popular because they are broken, not because of some alledged cave troll fanbase.

badmandan said on November 23, 2010 at 4 a.m.

They're widely used in MvC2 because they're broken, they're popular outside of MvC2 because they're cool. Really, does anyone not like Storm or Sentinels? Outside of people that are mad at them for being too strong in a game?

SethGravijah said on November 23, 2010 at 4:13 a.m.

Speaking of "must pay" DLC chars at this state is just mocking (well this is the polite version) people.

We're not talking of Add-ons here, we're talking of kit game.

And what for tomorrow ? We'll buy 70 euros the engine of the game and then 5 euros each character or stage ?

fabulos said on November 23, 2010 at 4:22 a.m.

how many stages are there in the game? they've only showed 5 so far right?

juanrock said on November 23, 2010 at 4:43 a.m.

@11 good question man, i have no idea, does anyone have te exact number? i hope there is a lot more, that would be great, specially considering that so far they are all awesome.

Lavama said on November 23, 2010 at 4:48 a.m.

@11 I only know of Spider-Man's stage (Obviously Daily Bugle there), a Umbrella stage, and a GnG stage. And Tron Bonne's stage.

So, there still is a chance for Nimrod!

Mega Man X for DLC and I'll pay $20 for even that single character. Mr. Svenson, like you said, DLC nowadays makes difference between profits, then put in X for DLC and he's definitely gonna pump it way up for Capcom and fans both.

there was so much complains about super street fighter 4 but this is exactly why i was more than happy with it, i prefer super editions, dlc is not my thing really.

the only character that i really want right now (since is pretty obvious that juri will not be in the game) is hsien ko, i bought darkstalkers for the psp just to try the characters and she is so awesome, it would be a great adition

well that and stan lee, he would be the ultimate character

DeathQuote44 said on November 23, 2010 at 6:37 a.m.

I see it now, Stan Lee tells the characters he helped create them then they question their own reality and become depressed. That would work but Deadpool already knows this stuff.

This game is not for the fans at all. If it was they would listen to us more. This is about money now and that DLC crap needs to stop its not cool. Capcom if you keep treating your fans like this. You will end up like midway. you guys are getting way to greedy now.

Mr_Clack said on November 23, 2010 at 7:44 a.m.

@ MrPavy
Capcom does have a huge unbalance of females already so replacing her with Donovan so him and Morrigan can be in a game together, wouldnt be bad at all but alas it's too late!
Plus Japan has that whole Cat Lady Fetish...

DLC for the characters is kinda of fishy seeing as how MvC2 had 50+ Char. and we did not need to pay any extra for it.

MIRACLEfool said on November 23, 2010 at 8:02 a.m.

To make games for the fans they need money. To make high quality games they need MORE money. Also they're a big company so it's bound to happen, all companies become like this one way or the other, think they call it capitalism in America.

juanrock said on November 23, 2010 at 8:06 a.m.

yeah but many onf the characters on mvc2 where reused skins of other games, its not the same here, there is much more work involved per characters, not to mention the balancing that seems to be a lot better now (at least i hope so)

im not sure how i feel about dlc charaters, the roster is still small for what i expect but we have to see what the final roster of the game will be before saying stuff like "capcom is selling us half a game"

if the roster has a good number of characters i have no problem paying extra for more because i will feel i will be getting my money's worth with whats on the disc, in the other hand if the roster is slim i will be pissed because that would be cheap cashing on capcom's part

Wishpig said on November 23, 2010 at 8:13 a.m.

@ dantebluewolf17

You gotta be kidding... they can't just "listen to the fans" it's not NEARLY that simple. You have a very short sited view. Take this for example. Some people are pissed that characters like Wolverine, Ryu, and Spider-Man are retaining their moves from past games rather then the devs giving them an all new set of moves. Some are even calling the devs lazy.

You can bet that if those characters had different or revamped move sets, there would be just as many fans throwing hissy fits over the fact the devs were changing the characters.

For one fan that wants THIS there's always a fan who wants THAT instead.

As far as DLC goes, it can be a good thing as easily as a bad. SFIV costumes are way to over priced, but the idea of new characters for MvC3 down the line make me very happy. At the end of the day you never NEED to buy DLC.

as usual the Japanese cover art is way more better than the NA/UK ones!

as a matter of fact when a Japanese game goes import, the US/NA versions dumped the anime visual art and change it to CG visual art, not just the cover art but also the in-game visual style, i can name a tons of game back from the PS1 era till' the current consoles now (a good example right now will be... Star Ocean: Last Hope)

and as for the special edition, i guess the extra $10 is worth it (2 DLC chars, steelbookcase w/ art, etc.)

Interesting... You say "first" like it's began there. lol
If you wanna see some of the first examples of crappy NA-versions of Capcom game cover artwork, just look at EVERY fighting game they've made that came out in the U.S.
On the SFC/SNES, Sega MD/Genesis, 3DO, PS1, PS2, SS, DC, and PS3/XB360 you have SF2, SF2T, SSF2, SSF2T, Rival Schools 1&2, SFZ/SFA parts 1, 2, and 3, and EVERY game in between. The covers suck. MvC2 had Psylocke and Guile on the DC cover and it didn't make sense. In the Zero/Alpha and Versus series, Nash had more of the limelight than Guile.
-And for SFZ3/SFA3 and MvC2, Guile was more like an "extra" character - Why pick him for the cover instead of Nash? No reason. Capcom's just retarded when it comes to game covers.

kirbykirbykirby said on November 23, 2010 at 8:52 a.m.

Agreed, which is why I won't buy it. Not the DLC, but the game. Otherwise you're stuck playing against characters you havent paid extra money to unlock, and thats as stupid as all those 'freemium' games where its free to play but until you pay for unlocked content, all you're doing is being cannon fodder for those that do pay.

Except this is worse, since you're paying for the game too.

Theres no way this game will stay balanced either, if you pay $5 for a character and your character isnt top top tier, you're not going to be happy.

Ya japanese cover for win basically. I want to order the special edition BECAUSE the artwork for the normal one is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad(not counting the chars XD).

awadekar said on November 23, 2010 at 9:44 a.m.

Here's my take on the situation.

So you paid 60$ for Street Fighter IV which had a great engine and a halfway decent amount of characters... with no chance for extra characters or stages... and everyone was happy with it because everyone was hyped.

BUT some people were upset their favorite character wasn't in it. THEN Capcom created SSF4 SPECIFICALLY for the fans (US fans on top of that because you know Jap fans would have prefered an Arcade Machine version FIRST). Everyone was happy paying 40$ for that game and it was a steal for everybody involved...EXCEPT those that wanted more characters and more features yada yada.

Now MVC3 could be a 70-80$ game when all is said and done ( I think the DLC Chars will be 5-10$ each.... hopefully 5)

And it has WAY more characters and WAY more combinations and better stages(by far) than SF4 did way back when ... but now we're all sad that we have to pay MORE to get a LARGER, HIGHER QUALITY PRODUCT... when we asked for it in the first place!! WAKE UP.

IM THANKFUL Capcom is making DLC instead of making everyone pay 80-90$ for the game because no one would buy it and our beloved company would be screwed. They're seperating the hardcore gamers from the people who just want to have some fun with marvel and capcom characters (there are casual players out there, some of you forget).

Does anyone remember the neo geo ? Yeah it died because the same games were being ported to terrible quality ( in comparison ) to the Genesis, NES, and SNES, but those consoles lived because CASUAL gamers control at least half the market.

"waahhh I want MVC3 with 100 characters for 50$ waaaaah".

You have to understand MVC2 came out on the dreamcast( only system it was worth playing on) WAY after the arcade release, it was a PORT. PORTS COST LESS.

Pwn_Star said on November 23, 2010 at 9:47 a.m.

The DLC is kind of a necessary evil as well as a buff to the game that would not be there.

This game already has a very large roster (and before you compare it to MvC2, consider all those sprites and move lists were preexisting to the games creation, as well require a lot less work). With such a huge roster it takes a lot to balance, much less model and animate the characters. Naturally this means every cool character cant make it by release DLC gives them the ability to add more on later. Notice Jill and Shuma have no proof they will even be finished by the time the game releases, proven by the 1 month lock. Very likely they're not on the disk.

Games that get frequent updates...need more money. Updates require fees and checks before being implemented and even more so require manpower to create. Making a new character is a lot of work and time, so it's expected future content should cost something. It's not greed, it's needed. (How TF2 team pulls it off for free tho, I have no idea)

Also...majorly unfair with the box art. Jap cover sh*ts all over US one...but thankfully im getting the SE version.

semi said on November 23, 2010 at 9:56 a.m.

"(How TF2 team pulls it off for free tho, I have no idea)"

TF2 started charging for some items, so I guess they didn't pull it off, but their method was to just place some value on customer relations and customer satisfaction. Instead of trying to get every possible penny, they wanted all of their fans to be happy so that we'd buy more games.

Now that every company is doing this, theres less reason to be the one company who doesn't, cause where are your users going to go? Everyones conditioned to accept it.

iag25 said on November 23, 2010 at 10:18 a.m.

How do u know there's way more stages ? how do you know there's way more charcaters ?

Because the engine to develop SSF4 was new they had to charge a certain amt for the game to cover the costs of creating the MT framework engine. (ie $50)

The engine is being reused for mvc3. Therefore it shouldn't cost so much to make the exact same number of characters and stages. It should cost less even if there are bit more characters and stages. Even including paying royalties to Marvel.

Thanks for carrying about Capcom's profits though

goukibuki said on November 23, 2010 at 11:11 a.m.

I was highly anticipating this, but I will not support paid DLC characters.

I don't care for SF4's DLC costumes, but they in no way, shape, or form affect gameplay options.

Also, this points to the reason for the lack-luster core roster. Akuma, Ken, Magneto, Cable, etc. are worth so much more as paid DLC vs adding them to the core roster. Instead their spots are filled by X-23 and She-Hulk; characters that wouldn't sell well as DLC.

I miss the days where I could unlock characters and costumes through single player, or collective game time. But it doesn't appear those days are coming back anytime soon.

I hear what you're saying and I am not trying to argue.

But we didn't unlock characters free of charge in MvC2. We dropped $50 to do so. And the folks who choose to drop $60 for MvC3 will not have the same option.

As a consumer, I can hope to change the ideals of paid DLC, opposed to embracing it.

I feel Capcom has overstepped their boundaries with this latest DLC effort. And yes, Capcom's boundaries are set by we, the consumers.

over 30 characters on one image starts to get alittle hectic, just saying

anyway Whens the last time any of you storm/sent/cable MORE OVER PSYLOCKE fans/watched read anything with any of them in it?

Storm's not that popular in or out of comics anymore
same thing with sent that's why they've been sidelined majorly.
Cable's fan base is hardcore and still ever presence, which is why he took Hope into the future and they featured a whole series around his relationship with her.

-Psylocke isn't really popping up all that often, hell last time I heard about her was in X-23's comic(unlike everyone else on this beside Cable,X-23 actually has her own ON GOING comic) when one of the female members of the New X-men said she saw Cellulite on Psy's thighs(remember psy practically wears a one piece bathing suit) and had gone on a diet to avoid that happening to her.

1.)Not more stages, better looking stages. Remember we're comparing it to SF4.

2.)I know there'll be way more characters because its MvC. Thats a given. Anyone who thinks there'll be less characters in MVC3 than the original SF4, please tell me so I can shut up.

3.)If that is in fact the same engine, it is extremely HEAVILY modified, for not only speed, but polygons, textures, and many other things. I mean there can be 4 of those characters on screen at once with a ton of special effects on screen, with no slow down. Even in SSF4, notice if Ken's Ultra 1 Lands Full as a KO, the game CRAWLS. There is definitely technology costs you are not counting.

4.) Of course I care about Capcom's profits. I don't know if this occurred to you or not... but if Capcom doesn't make profits, we don't get good games to play, it's as simple as that, or worse, great games cost way more.

SO yeah if your landlord can't pay the bills you don't get to live there anymore in a manner of speaking.

Ex_Ein said on November 23, 2010 at 2:27 p.m.

Actually it's not a given because if you look at at Original MVC only had 22 total PLAYABLE characters in home version(Including Shadowlady, Gold WM, Red Venom and Orange Hulk).
while Alpha 3 had 28 playable characters in the Arcade version and over 32 characters in the Home version.

So no not every version of MVC has had a bigger roster than the current street fighter it came out against.

So yes it is possible that MVC3 could have had a smaller cast than SF4(home version) or SSF4

I mean what if i go to a tournament and get trashed by these to characters because i couldn't afford them and get to know how they play.

awadekar said on November 23, 2010 at 3:22 p.m.

True Facts about the original MVC, which I was totally thinking someone will peg me on, and you did. Alpha 3 MAX was what I was thinking about too, which had I think 8 or so more characters ... So you could be right about the number...

Come to think of it especially considering TvC was pretty skimpy compared to a SF game I think ... I think Super has it beat... So another good point against that.

So I'll shut up about the number of playable characters... because it is an unknown, but I still feel the game has more to it than SF, which has a very bare-bones quality to it. Whether it is as balanced is yet to remain which will be the real question at hand... and the real point of worth for me. SSF4 is way too excellently balanced. It's clean. The barebones quality can be enhanced by the costumes but then you get back to the 70$ price tag!

That being said. I've all ready preordered my 70$ version... I can't wait till my big TV is filled with the beautiful shenanigans of that game.

I just feel that SSF4 is still worth 40$ and that MVC3 is inherently worth a lot more, due to content and quality of the content, save balance.

I'd also like to add that I believe ( someone correct me ) licensing Marvel characters, and doing the correspondence with that team who makes those calls costs quite a bit of money. The accuracy of the character's portrayals is called into question where as a franchise's mainstay characters can be molded how that franchise sees fit.

A lot has gone into this game, and as a software developer, I think we are selling the company short by complaining about the price.

Screw it im taking the JP cover art and just replacing the one I get.

Well psylocke is still pretty popular and not that many people want her for her assist. Most people already know that the tiers won't apply to this game and just want her.

ANother thing is the people acting like ass holes about not buying the game, are just like the one's that didn't want to buy sf4 at first but ended up buying it anyway. The game will still sell 2 million units, people just want to be a holes to make themselves look good.

Well considering how many hundreds of hours ill probably log into MvC3 ive got no problem paying for characters.

Capcom Fighters = More bang for my buck than pretty much any other games. A little extra for some characters or costumes is pretty trivial considering the overall value.

No demo is absolutely stupid! February is too far away!

I pre-ordered the special edition because it will probably be just as good as the older games. Even if it's a total sausage fest on Marvel's side (just 2 females?)

@ awadekar

Everyone always says this but.....SF4 series is NOT extremely well balanced. Ryu, Ken, Sagat, Chun Li (my fave), + all the grapple characters are the only ones worth playing if you want to win against anyone who's decent-great at street fighter. In the many hours I've spent playing online with people of wide skill ranges most don't use 80% of the cast. Because 80% of the cast is useless. Largely thanks to the arbitrary absence of air-blocking and the fact that command grabs have priority over almost everything does not = balance. I've saw a total of 5 C.viper players....just 5.

lol Now that I got that outta my system for once.....I want Rogue in MVC3! Even though it probably won't happen I just wanna steal powers like in XvsSF again......

lol rouge would be a waste of a character space in this day and age of vs series if all she did was steal powers like in the old games.

where did you hear that? because you seem to be assuming alot of sh!t right now especially when you consider that the DLC characters won't be ready for another month(Telling you that they need more time to meet deadline than launch). You notice how they don't have anything but the offical art for Shuma and Jill? It's not like we know there full moveset seen them 100% fully in game and know who they work great with but they just happen to be DLC. So saying "Capcom is doing it for profit" without someone at CAPCOM saying it.

And how is it difficult? go to game stop buy a 20 dollar PSN XBL card(they're at gamestop, target, walmart and best buy) you just have to redeem on the console and type in the numbers.

The thing is Shuma shouldn't change that much at most he'll get buffs and get a new move here or there that he didn't have in MVC2. Which I've gotten some pretty funny wins (since Shuma has a Rainbow ball like move that he crosses up)

Jill is the biggest enigma since we know she's not going to have her zombies(due to the graphic nature and the fact they're shooting for a T rating). However I'm not expecting anything gamebreaking.

Also if you're not trying to play casuals before the actual competition starts, I'm sorry but you're doing it wrong....

She did more than that she naturally fly and was very strong(due to stealing Ms.Marvel's powers)

However she'd be sorta like a seth if I could design her in that she has a few of her own normals but alot of her other moves take from other characters on the cast

Easy buddy lol, i'm not bitching i could careless. You and i don't know how anyone would be in the game. And to me that doesn't even matter , i like o play with everyone in the game, i don't want to have to pay an extra amount of money to play with 2 character i may not even like.

And Eventhubs is not a place where only Americans come as well, there are no bestbuys walmarts and other things here. I live in Trinidad in the Caribbean. For me to buy thing off psn i have to do all sorts of bull crap because the don't accept credit cards which are not addressed in the USA. So its either i go buy an over priced PSN card which cost about twice as much as they should down here to buy thing offline or i do through some long a** process to get a credit card addressed in the USA.

And it is for profit why else would they do it??
I got no beef with that its a company they do things to make profit. And i think somewhere in the notes on top said that as well *don't hold me to that im not sure*.

I would much rather 1 of a couple things.

1. Release new characters and balance changes as either a downloadable or disc bought expansion pack.
2. Don't add any new characters at all.
3. Make the overall price of the game more so that it can cover the cost of the extra characters.
4. At least make it so that you can set it so that the extra characters cannot be played when you are playing online or even offline as well.

All in all i probably would eventually get the game when the price goes down *would of gotten it immediately if it was not for the DLC* and hopefully get the DLC shared from my friend on PSN.

I am the one who made the original post and I did not say "I don't agree with the decision to include DLC fighters in MvC3. This is just wrong."

The point we were trying to make is that

1. We want to know how they're going to deal with the have/have nots balancing issue with DLC chars.

2. Upset that DLC chars were announced so early and I have a hunch that the chars are finished, but being held back to milk the consumer for more money. I believe them announcing "content complete" recently to be a smokescreen to try and act like this isn't so.

Ex_Ein said on November 24, 2010 at 12:43 a.m.

because they can't fit them on Disc

IrPanda said on November 24, 2010 at 6:52 a.m.

I hope your not serious...

and this is why i said it is about profit

"As I've stated in prior interviews, DLC is part of the business model these days given the massive costs of production and can be the difference between a profitable product and an unprofitable product."

They should of just made the game with less characters instead imo...
