First and foremost a HUGE thanks goes to Tony "Ponder" Cannon, who went out of his way a number of times throughout EVO to provide results and do things to keep the community in the loop. He was easily the single biggest contributor to this story.

A very special thanks goes to the Level|Up Series guys for being so helpful and nice. Also, Seth Killian, Arlieth, Chris Li, MediaDarling, Justice, Nyoronoru, James Chen, Mr. Wizard, Karaface and Tom Cannon for their support — plus the many other people I know I'm forgetting.

Also, kudos to Poke, PHB and Axefresh for contributing to this story.

Unsurprisingly, no one who mains a new (to SSFIV) character is in the top 32. I expect next year at EVO we'll see a fair number of them, but no one wanted to dump their mains just a few months before EVO and risk not finishing in the most important tournament.

Jarkyttaa said on July 10, 2010 at 1:16 a.m.

Ah, I missed that.

However, my point still 95% stands.

ShadowKnight28 said on July 10, 2010 at 1:18 a.m.

Does anybody if any other japanese SSFIV players made the trip besides Tokido, Daigo and Eita?

jjohan35 said on July 10, 2010 at 1:47 a.m.

Why won't they at least post the tournament bracket?

@#115

The stream is free, why are you complaining. Just shut up and watch it.

Of course there are going to be problems with it. Be grateful they're even doing a stream and it's free to view.

wow cant believe many off the top Japanese players are in losers brackets. i gotta a question. is there anyway someone in losers can make it to winners bracket, or is that it for them?

Caramujov2 said on July 10, 2010 at 7:22 a.m.

#133

The winner of the loser´s final go to the grand final and must win 2 sets.
The winner of he winner´s final needs to win just on set in the grand final.

Flawless said on July 10, 2010 at 7:25 a.m.

@133
they can't get back into winners but they can still win it all.

Who eliminated Ed Ma and Yipes and does anyone know who put Sanford into loosers. I also thought Online Tony was eliminated

VegaBisonAbel said on July 10, 2010 at 7:57 a.m.

@drmarion
yeah floe is such a scumbag, i hate that fat disgrace.

In general, evo is so hype this time. I wish I saw more. If people like tokido, sanford, tatsu, onlinetony, sabin and EITA(!) are put to loser's then the level of competition must be so crazy!

I didn't see the eita/tokido fights but maybe these 2 intentionally went to losers to maybe steer away from the path of justin wong and daigo in winners.

Super_Chun said on July 10, 2010 at 8:09 a.m.

@137 - Are you that stupid? If his opponent cared, all he had to ask for was a blindpick. It's clearly in the rules in most tournaments.

@130 - It's not even the biggest day and Evo had 5,000 more people watching it than the biggest days of any of the other tourneys I've seen this year. Kindly shut the fück up with your moronic generalizations.

Pig_Red said on July 10, 2010 at 8:15 a.m.

Because they don't want everyone to see how they rig the brackets.

45 hours stream non stop my ass!!!

Gutter_Trash said on July 10, 2010 at 8:40 a.m.

@138 why would they intentionally lose? They aren't even in the same pools, that's not how it even works. Why in the world would Eita or Tokido be scared to face Justin Wong? He's not even better than them or on the same level. Geeze I swear you fan boys sometimes don't know any better.

Flawless said on July 10, 2010 at 8:45 a.m.

I learned a couple things after day 1 at EVO
I learned that Europe is really free at Street Fighter
I learned EVO knows how put a very choppy stream on
I learned that Daigo is still the beast and I'm having doubts about Justin not winning this WOW I hope that I'm wrong
I also learned that Japan is not far ahead of us in Street Fighter besides Daigo everyone else is in loosers

VegaBisonAbel said on July 10, 2010 at 8:59 a.m.

@143
umm i don't know who put those two(tokido and eita) to loser's but there is absolutely no way these two people who are on the same level with daigo be sent to losers this early. Then again, I'm just speculating just for the fun of it :D

can't believe flash and pr balrog are done already

IrPanda said on July 10, 2010 at 9:01 a.m.

Lol@ 138
You don know putting themselves in the losers bracket would only make it harder?? Thats one of the dumbest statements i ever heard.

fabulos said on July 10, 2010 at 9:07 a.m.

yeah but seriously. Tokido? lose intentionally because he doesn't want to face Justin Wong? quite the absurd theory.

saiferoth said on July 10, 2010 at 9:17 a.m.

The Tekken 6 stream started but i only hear audio...damnit.

Mourne said on July 10, 2010 at 9:26 a.m.

@147: Sadly, that's not the most absurd thing I've heard from the members of this site.

As for VegaBisonAbel, you're doing exactly what I pointed out before this began leading up to EVO this year. They are both very talented and skilled players, but again--as was predicted on this very site--the Japanese players are being overrated and unfairly. That does not mean they are not good, it just means you guys expect -far too much- from them.

That said, and this is really just my opinion, Daigo is better than the two of them. Much better. That is not a knock on Tokido and Eita--they just simply are not on the same level of play as is Daigo, much less Momochi.

In short: They lost, and sometimes they are going to lose. JR Rodriguez took it to Tokido and, by all accounts, outplayed him every step of the way. If you instead looked at them as players and not Japanese players on a match-by-match basis, you wouldn't be as shocked as the rest of us.

EnkiduV3 said on July 10, 2010 at 9:30 a.m.

@130 You mean the quality stream Europe put up for ESWC? Oh that's right... There wasn't a stream for that.

Bob said on July 10, 2010 at 9:31 a.m.

@RageKitDemon

I'm sorry you couldn't watch it. The point is it's a free stream and you didn't pay for it.

If you wait a few days you might be lucky, people will upload some videos. The point is stop whining if you want to view the stream, watch it when it is live.

People have to eat and sleep there is a time schedule for such a huge event.

Hayate1984 said on July 10, 2010 at 10:07 a.m.

oh man it starts 03:00 PM, that means midnight here in Sweden. EVO should have offline recorded stream too, no way I can stay awake that long.

The stream isnt that bad for 15,000 people viewing it. I mean I dont like lag either but still not bad.

@150 Yeh it was said that JR landed 3 Demons...Im assuming thats 3 Ultra's after Tokido probably did alot of damage, and Ultra Demon does alot of damage on Akuma. I guess Tokido isnt used to seeing random Demons as most of JR's Demons are random.

JumpMan33 said on July 10, 2010 at 12:45 p.m.

Did gootecks even enter? I didn't see him play on the stream at all. Also, does Ken-I still play?

AnsatsukenChamp said on July 10, 2010 at 1:08 p.m.

Kick justin's ass, daigo, show that douche that ur better than him

AnsatsukenChamp said on July 10, 2010 at 1:13 p.m.

Oh yea @8
u predict wrong, j wong loses to RB, gets humiliated, and then daigo wins EVO

Catalyst said on July 10, 2010 at 1:49 p.m.

More updates on players who didn't reach the top 32 coming. Inkblot is helping me get together a list, the guy has been very helpful.

VegaBisonAbel said on July 10, 2010 at 1:55 p.m.

tatsu prolly wins this whole thing.

BisonBetterBeGoodInSSF4 said on July 10, 2010 at 2:02 p.m.

thnx to #132 & 133 for answering my question.

one more stupid question from me and then im done lol. how many matches is in one GF(grand finals) set?

saiferoth said on July 10, 2010 at 2:07 p.m.

Rip and WayneGamble. Crazy awesome Law mirror.

Catalyst said on July 10, 2010 at 2:36 p.m.

Just added a bunch of updates to the SSF4 part of the story. Check out the heading "How other top players fared"

cearbeartron said on July 10, 2010 at 3:56 p.m.

BTW, is it just me or is womens bracket a stupid idea? I mean there are no disadvantages/advantages for men/women in gaming. Its pure skill that determines the outcome of a match and not the body you are born with*. which is one of the reasons I find e-sport more interesting than regular sport, its fair and square.

I'm assuming the organizers wanted to highlight that there are some girls playing which isn't a bad idea considering the low percentage of competitive gamers being female but it shouldn't really matter that much. You shouldn't enter a turney to see how you match up against other with the same gender when that alone doesn't affect your skill.

I just don't want gender to play a role in this like in Chess or Curling (both "sports" has nothing to almost nothing to do with physical strength or gender).

I might be over-thinking so your thoughts about this would be interesting to hear.

*Some are born without arms etc but these are rare cases and isn't the point.

BWBoyToucher said on July 10, 2010 at 3:56 p.m.

Stream fûcking sucks, Jesus Christ Evo, if you can't afford bandwidth, just put it up on justin.tv. Doesn't exactly fill me with the urge to pay money for the videos you guys shill - makes it seem hella manipulative.

TheEnd187 said on July 10, 2010 at 4:23 p.m.

Its on U$stream now f**k $tickam

PeterTheBohemian said on July 10, 2010 at 4:31 p.m.

Good stuff #170, I was about to post it too.

The Ustream version is waaaaaaay better than the stickcam version. I live on Guam and it's perfect. No lag or freezing at all.

CONSTvariable23 said on July 10, 2010 at 4:50 p.m.

@#168/cearbeartron:

It's not a women's bracket, in fact, from the announcement I just Googled up: "The only way to play in the invitational is to participate in the fully open tournament against everyone else in the world". Don't worry, they're not gender segregating EVO.

Ex_Ein said on July 10, 2010 at 4:56 p.m.

omg online tony :) i like his chunli better then his seth tbh but either way nice semi final matches serious stuff

BWBoyToucher said on July 10, 2010 at 7:23 p.m.

The Sanford stick drama was nuts. How long does it take to translate "you won the first match" into Japanese, for fûck's sake? Hype totally left the room after that crap.

Gorav said on July 10, 2010 at 7:23 p.m.

I'm so proud of GamerBee repping Adon! I saw his matches versus Daigo and he's pretty amazing. Why is he in the losers bracket if he has yet to be eliminated? Or am I reading the results wrong?
