Ono: We don't own the rights for SF EX characters

Ono: We don't own the rights for SF EX characters Yoshinori Ono ruled out any Arika Street Fighter EX characters making their way into Super Street Fighter 4 on his Twitter account. Here's the dialogue from his posts.

Will there ever be another Street Fighter EX game?

Ono: Ummm, we do not [know]....

Please put Hakuto and Kairi from SF EX into Super Street Fighter 4.

Ono: We don't have all [of the] rights for [the Street Fighter] EX series. It's difficult.

Could you make a deal to get Skullomania in SSF4 as a DLC character?

Ono: [That would be] difficult. ;(

Finally.....people can SHUT UP about the damn EX characters.

ScytheWP said on August 17, 2010 at 12:54 p.m.

How ignorant is everyone...They've known for years Capcom doesn't own the rights to these characters...but the requests just keep coming.

Ex games were total crap..just look at the characters designs..in order to make them 3d they just screwed them...bt still i would be happy if they put that sword girl( cant remember name) in ssf4..!

Jarkyttaa said on August 17, 2010 at 1:10 p.m.

@#6: Have you played all the EX games? Most people who have actually played them agree that they were actually fairly solid. Most people who say they sucked have never played them.

DudeMeister said on August 17, 2010 at 1:12 p.m.

great! now people can finally shut up about ex characters since ono said they don't own the rights. besides, it was well-known since a long time ago that they don't own the rights.
why do people ask for ex characters anyway? the only cool ex character is garuda, all the others kinda suck.

DudeMeister said on August 17, 2010 at 1:19 p.m.

@#7 (jarkyttaa)

i had street fighter ex+a and it sucked ass. slow as hell, ugly graphics(even for a ps1 game) and lame character design(except for garuda more or less). the only thing that was good about the game was some of the music.

Loghorn said on August 17, 2010 at 1:24 p.m.

I agree with all of you, especially NoizyChild & ScytheWP. It's because that people are idiots & think that the EX games are canon when they really aren't (see Kairi defeating Akuma (Gouki in Japan), for example. If anyone were to beat Akuma (Gouki), it would be Ryu himself. Why do you think they did that? To prove that the EX series is non canon), & think that they belong on here because it had "Street Fighter" in the title & that the EX characters were made from Capcom themselves when in truth, they were made by Arika.

Besides, the last time that we've seen a EX game was 10 years ago, back on PS2. Most of the EX characters are forgettable (except for some like Skullomania, Doctrine Dark, etc.) & doesn't come even close to being extremely popular like the SF 2 characters, some Alpha/Zero characters, & the SF 3 characters COMBINED.

Also, if they were to try to get the rights back from Arika, it would most likely be expensive, & then the timeline, stories, etc., would have to be retconned (again, Kairi defeating Akuma). It would truly defeat the purpose of everything that was already planned for 2 decades now, such as Ryu being in matches with Akuma (Gouki). The minute that they have some EX characters in this game (which would be next to impossible), most of them would be going, "Who's Darun?", "Who's Pullum Purna?", etc. People need to get over that.

AceKombat said on August 17, 2010 at 1:26 p.m.

EX is the beta predecessor of SFIV with invincibility on wake-up reversals and Dictator's throw animation . So many people gave it a bad reception people got confused thinking it had side-steps :P... Anyways it would be interesting if they could put Garuda ( Pressure with his Shuuga would be interesting to see ) and V.Rosso ( Mix-ups ) as new characters .

FREE1UP said on August 17, 2010 at 1:50 p.m.

Who the heck wants those WACK characters anyway?

Bookerjj said on August 17, 2010 at 1:51 p.m.

LOL SSF4 and SSF4 are nothing but a newer remake of the EX series. Yes those games are dated, but looking at the 3D models they pretty close. The game had ex bars, supers and "ultras," hell it even had a focus attack just without the armor.

The EX games was not truly a bad game, game-play wise because it played so similar to all SF games. Just the graphics were pretty bad for its time, and was not marketed well, cause a lot of people didn't know about it.

Loghorn said on August 17, 2010 at 2:17 p.m.

Bookerjj @14, & AceKombat @11, how exactly are they a remake of the EX series? They don't play alike or look like each other. Other fighters had EX bars, supers, & ultras as well.

tokyobassist said on August 17, 2010 at 2:23 p.m.

Oh stfu all of you snobs acting like you NEVER liked EX for what it was back in the day. Some of its concepts got transfered over to SSF4 like the Focus Attacks you know. Plus I remember 99% of ya'll HATED SF3 when it first came out, then Japanese players came out of the wood works and showed everybody how to play the game and now ya'll are throwing a bash over it. Stupid wannabe pros...

I still think SF3 is very un-SF-like and more like an SNK game called Garou. Plus the character designs weren't that good either like Twelve, Yun & Yang, Oro ond Necro. D. Dark might have been badass but his design was crap. Same principle

SabishiiRyuu said on August 17, 2010 at 2:23 p.m.

What a stupid waste of time for a question... I think I've said the exact same thing about EX characters over 5 times and there you go...

damn ex gettin no love! might not have been the best looking game, but at least it didnt have s--ty scrub inputs. ex3 was f--kin awsome the tag option added so many more options to the fighting, ie... tag combos critical parades meteror tag combos. say what you will about ex3 but the gameplay was awsome.

Skaz9000 said on August 17, 2010 at 3:35 p.m.

The EX characters were greatly forgettable for the most part, but it had a few memorable. Skullomania, Garuda and Doctrine Dark seemed to kind of stick out in my opinion. Although the games themselves had their faults (particularly the graphics and slow gameplay), I still found them enjoyable. I also can't help but feel a slight bit of EX-ness in the Street Fighter 4 releases somehow.

Creeper said on August 17, 2010 at 4 p.m.

Seconded. This is just a rough mod someone made and it still looks good, and works remarkably well for El Fuerte.
Imagine how good it would look if done by professionals.

Bookerjj said on August 17, 2010 at 4:02 p.m.

@Loghorn #19
lol can't argue with you, you take things to literally, and that's cool. But even though, other games have ex-bars, supers and ultras. Out of all the Street Fighter universe no other street fighter has ex-moves, supers, ultras, and a unblockable move. So for people you actually played the EX-series they or we can how much more close than they are apart to SF4.

KingItachi said on August 17, 2010 at 4:40 p.m.

Damn, I would have love too see either Duran,Doctrine Dark, Shadow Geist, Skullo or Vulcano Rosso in SSF4

Dan_CiTi said on August 17, 2010 at 5:32 p.m.

Man, aside from Skullomania and Cracker Jack, people need to forget the EX characters exist and get a life.

Nelaelu said on August 17, 2010 at 6:22 p.m.

Am I the only one that thinks that Street Fighter games NEED to be visually appealing?

When I play Street Figher I expect to see a PIECE of ART, with elegant character designs, stunning moves, and beautiful stages.

EX doesn't live up to Street Fighter's artistic standards...

JohnJohnson said on August 17, 2010 at 7:27 p.m.

Well, at least there is still hope for this character to be in the game.

McBison said on August 17, 2010 at 7:40 p.m.

SF3 was made before Garou therefore its more like Garou is like SF3. When Garou came out I was convinced that it was SNK's answer to the SF3 series. I do agree that SF3 kinda un-SF like but thats what I love about it. In SF3, Turtlers get crushed and no boring hadoken spam B.S.
I dont know if anybody remembers but the first SF EX game was the first to have super cancels which were then brought to SF3 and SF4. But the idea seems like it could have been developed at the same time since SF3:NG was released 4 months after SFEX.
I remember enjoying the first 2 EX games but I cant say I care for the characters much. But Cracker Jack's design appeared in the Capcom Illustrations mook(1995) as a Shadowloo henchman so he could be canon.

@Bookerjj: I think that you might want to read this thread about it in which many posters said that SF IV is nothing like the EX series here (& the same for you, tokyobassist):

RyuMinati said on August 18, 2010 at 12:27 a.m.

wow 1st off not every1 knew that capcom didnt own the rights to EVERY ex character 2nd of all why not request them just because they dont own them doesnt mean they cant make a deal to get them if they see the fans want them back

the ex series was actually pretty damn good back then and there were a few very noteable characters i would love to see some of them back

and to Loghorn how do you explain akuma being so frail in sf4? do you really care that much about the story?
people want to see the ex characters back because they had a few favorites there i was actually the person who asked ono about kairi and hakuto because they were great characters to me so was allan and garuda i dont expect to see any of these characters back but why not ask for them not every1 hated these characters so i dont see why all the comments about people being ignorant are needed here not even ono didnt actually shoot any of these suggestions down he just said it would be hard not impossible so chill guys

Loghorn said on August 18, 2010 at 1:29 a.m.

RyuMinati: You honestly think that Ono is going to spend a lot of money to Arika just to bring back some EX characters in which most of them don't care about? Come on.

RyuMinati said on August 18, 2010 at 1:45 a.m.

seeing as how a good portion of the ssf4 characters were added based on what the fans wanted i dont see why they wouldnt look into making a deal but neither of us knows all the little details all i know is ono said it would be difficult.....he didnt exactly say no way ono has clearly stated that r.mika is a must for him but we stil havent seen her in the game so i doubt they do much of the dlc based off what the company wants to see in game

RA_MO said on August 18, 2010 at 2:02 a.m.

Forgive me on this but I thought Akuma was "frail" because he holds back to give his opponents a fighting chance. I thought Capcom said that themselves

mr_e said on August 18, 2010 at 2:05 a.m.

Does the SF4 engine incorporate somethin from the EX games like cancelin moves/special moves? I don't remember

RyuMinati said on August 18, 2010 at 2:08 a.m.

RA_MO as far as i knew of the story he only fights people who he aknowledges as equal to him and from what it looks like ryu well (evil ryu) is stronger than akuma. he also sees gen as an equal but he stopped there fight when he figured out gen is sick but regardless of all that im talking about the ammount of damage he can take in ssf4 he can hit very strong but if you breath on him he dies lol

RyuMinati said on August 18, 2010 at 2:10 a.m.

mr_e theres the focus attack dash cancel which lets you cancel certain regular and special moves into supers and so forth

Nanaya said on August 18, 2010 at 6:50 a.m.

samuraix025 said on August 18, 2010 at 6:11 p.m.

dude just because its not hand drawn doesn't mean its an updated ex, the engine isn't even similar, while I liked the EX games the characters were not part of the SF universe, it was a spin off, it was the "ultimate spider man" of the street fighter series. now lets sit back and wait for someone to ask for skullomania...again

RyuMinati said on August 18, 2010 at 9:20 p.m.

samuraix025 skullomania please? lol but serious question besides the fact of capcom owning the rights to these characters whats the differfence between them making a new character and pulling a few from an sf spinoff i mean from what i've read gouken was put in the game based off of confusion in the story way back when and they put him in to flush the story out a bit why cant it be done for a skullomania or an allan or hell even a scott pilgim for that matter? lol

kilvoctu said on August 19, 2010 at 1:40 a.m.

@Nelaelu (#34)
"When I play [Street Fighter] I expect to see a PIECE of ART, with elegant character designs, stunning moves, and beautiful stages.
EX doesn't live up to Street Fighter's artistic standards..."

You're....joking, right? Beautiful stages, I'll give you that, since they've always been quite fancy, but Street Fighter character designs fall in two basic categories: Simple, and quirky. Anyone claiming otherwise is delusional.
Let's take the most iconic character, Ryu. His character design: messy short hair, red headband, white torn gi, typical fighting stance. Simple.
Now a rival of his, Sagat. Character design: tall, bald, eyepatch, shorts, scar on chest, muay thai stance. A little more quirky than simple this time.
I'd like to make dozens more examples, but I think my point gets across, hopefully.

"Stunning moves" is debatable. Personally, I think Street Fighter characters have rather tame moves, ever moreso when I look and compare with relatively seizure-inducing 2D fighters, like those made by Aksys. SFIV is really the first game where the moves were quite visually appealing to me. The sprite-based SF games had attacks and graphical effects that I expected to see in any similar fighter.

All debate for naught, anyway, since "art" is subjective.

mr_e said on August 19, 2010 at 5:40 a.m.

@RyuMinati. thanks for the info. its interesting that a game that sucks has somethin that was borrowed to make SF4. i know the game looks like...well not real good but EX lives on in SF4. just a though

darthmegas said on August 19, 2010 at 10:43 a.m.

@kilvoctu (#53)
i agree with you 100%, Nelaelu (#34) is a real super c u nt. personaly i tried playing super street fighter 4 but i had to quit, im dissapointed in the lack of some king of air combo system or follow up, homing dash or pursuit to invite awesome over the tom visualy stunning moves that he wants. im a Guilty Gear ACP player. i think SSF4 it tame, its tame cause of the lack of stuff you can do in the game in terms of movement and where you can take the fight. GGACP you can jump and air dash all over the place, run on ground or dash. inviting dynamics that SSF4 just doesnt have.
think of it like this, look at goken, ken, ryu, akuma and sakura. HADOKEN,SHORYUKEN and HURRICANE KICK. i look at the attitudes and characters and go "goken"? if he is the most experienced they could do something cool like make his HADOKENS stay in mid air until he say kicks them or punches them, the strenghth of the attack determines speed, and the direction accordingly, maybe even allowing dalsim like cross ups, similar to Venom in GGACP. wait hold on....sorry dudes, someone over at capcom lacks creativity. also why the only way they can make some characters fair is by giving them low life. only thing they can do since the game lacks different platforms of fighting and movement capabilities.

sixstrings said on August 22, 2010 at 9:11 p.m.

before any one says street fighter ex3 sucked they need to tell themselves hmmmm " did i even know to to really play street fighter ex 3 in the first place. "

check out this insane combo video

Aparkz said on August 29, 2010 at 12:39 a.m.

The Ex series brought alot of ideas to street fighter and other games. Most of the Ex games were rushed to begin with, cost if they had a good amount of time they would of sold more. Look at the new games that's coming out (ex. Street fighter X Tekken) the whole tag team specials...Ex.. what about those stun hits that u can charge up...Ex.. all those combo cancels that u can do in SSF4... look at the EX series and see u cant do some of those combos
