Ryu was first confirmed to be a playable character in Street Fighter 6 on February 20, 2022. He appeared alongside newcomer Luke in a short teaser trailer announcing the game.
Acting as the face of the franchise, Ryu made his first appearance in the world of video games on August 12, 1987 in the first Street Fighter title to hit arcades. Ryu has been playable in every main Street Fighter title that has ever launched.
A noticeably older and wiser version of Ryu, the wandering warrior has a more distinguished appearance in Street Fighter 6. His new design sees the return of his facial hair, while adding a new set of sandals and a kasaya (Buddhist robe) that he wears similarly to his master Gouken.
In Street Fighter 6, Ryu has finally overcome the Satsui No Hado. Now, he travels the world in search of true strength and greater heights for himself.
He acts as one of the "Masters" in Street Fighter 6's World Tour mode, a skilled and seasoned fighter who trains the newcomers in his fighting style. Players are able to meet Ryu in this single player experience and take on some of his techniques to use in battle and traverse the world more efficiently.
Ryu comes equipped with all of his traditional and most iconic moves in Street Fighter 6. He can fire off powerful Hadokens, stop the opponent's jump with a beefy Shoryuken, and carry them to the corner by ending combos with Hurricane Kick.
Of course, he has also learned several new abilities such as his Hashogeki, which sees the classic contender concentrate ki within his palms and hit the opponent with a short blast of energy. Ryu can also now utilize Denjin Charge, a maneuver that envelops his fists with the Power of Nothingness and powers up special moves like his Hadoken and Hashogeki.
