Shang Tsung Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate moves

Overview

Tier Ranking: 11th MK11 Tiers Popularity: 13th

Shang Tsung was Mortal Kombat 11's very first DLC roster addition as he joined the base cast on June 18, 2019, some two months after the game's initial release.

The evil sorcerer was the very first final boss of the series as he served as the final challenge of Mortal Kombat 1's arcade ladder. Shang made his playable debut in Mortal Kombat 2 (April 1993) wherein he was able to morph into all other playable fighters and use their attacks, his trademark fireballs being his only unique special move at the time.

Shang's appearance has evolved perhaps more than any other individual character over the years, which is relatively easy for fans to digest given his status as a shape shifter, but NetherRealm Studios was able to model his MK11 appearance after Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the actor who very charismatically portrayed the character in the 1995 live action Mortal Kombat film.

Tagawa's model (he voices the character as well) proved to be one of the most exciting reveals for Mortal Kombat 11, and fans were further enthused when NRS revealed that both young and old versions of the character would be playable through alternate costumes.

Shang Tsung is primarily a zoning type character in Mortal Kombat 11 as he has a handful of special moves that attack from various distances. In addition to his fireballs, he can drop hazards from the sky (they're corpses... it's Mortal Kombat) and cause small eruptions to explode at opponents' feet.

Shang's shape shifting abilities are still present in MK11, but are heavily toned down relative to his earliest portrayals, as developers seem to want him to have his own identity. Through various special attacks, the sorcerer will transform into various MK ninjas including Smoke, Ermac, Rain, and Reptile, only one of which (Rain) is otherwise playable in the game.

While it's arguable as to whether or not Shang ranks in the top 10 of Mortal Kombat 11's overall tier list, he's almost always placed at a well above average position by pro players. With the perfect combo of effectiveness, satisfying gameplay, and charisma, Shang is never a bad pick in MK11.
