Thor Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Moves, Combos, Strategy Guide

Character Overview
This guide is not complete, please check back for new information over time.

Thor is grapple based brawler character that also has an 8-way air dash which gives him good mobility when he jumps. People have often compared him to Zangief and Colossus in the early builds of Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

He does A LOT of damage and can keep his opponent locked down when they're cornered. Thor isn't the most complicated character on the roster, as his overall game is fairly straight forward.

You'll want to be in your opponent's face whenever possible — so you can land his Might Smash command grab, but it can be difficult to get there because Thor is a bit slower than your average character.

Special Moves

Mighty Spark (Projectile)

Thor shoots lightning from his hammer which covers a large part of the screen, this can be performed in the air or on the ground. You can control the timing of when the lightning comes out as well.

Mighty Hurricane

This is a command grab like Zangief's Spinning Piledriver in the Street Fighter games. It does a TON of damage and is the main basis for Thor's offense in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

You cannot combo into this, but it can be performed on the ground or in the air, and there are a variety of ways you can set this up.

Mighty Smash
203,700 - 226,100

The Hard version of this move can be charged up.

Mighty Strike
133,000 - 175,900
133,000 - 175,900
133,000 - 175,900

The move can be charged up.

Mighty Speech (Mega Taunt)

Hold down the Hard attack button to keep doing this move and building up your Hyper meter.

Hyper (Super) Moves

Mighty Tornado
321,600 - 382,700

Thor creates a giant tornado around him. In certain cases, you can combo into this after landing his Mighty Smash command grab.

Mighty Thunder

Thor sends an electric charge along the ground causing a massive amount of damage.

Mighty Punish

An improved version of Thor's command grab.

Word on the street and from the videos is Thor is a very poor combatant at the moment. He does good damage and all, but just has trouble initiating combat and actually staying in there. Hell, even the devs can't seem to play him right, he's always getting his bum kicked even with his makers at the helm.

Shame, Thor has deserved a spot in the MvC roster for a long time... hopefully his deserved time in the spotlight isn't offset by being painfully low tier.

^ Word! In addition to his 8-way air dash, he needs to have the ability to fully fly. The developers should take this into account in order to be true to the character. This should give him more mobility in the game imo.

Thor doesn't really fly in the comics though. He throws Mjolnir in a direction and it carries him; really an 8-way air-dash is truer to Thor's character than regular flight.

I'm surprised Thor doesn't have a move that involves throwing his hammer.

I think Mighty Thunder will be his Level 1... It's just a ground projectile. Whatever his grab move is will probably be a cutscene-based Level 3 move of doom.

Yes, I know it's only taking off 1 bar of hyper meter when he attempts it in that one gameplay video. But so did Super-Skrull's Level 3 when they revealed it early. And so does all those very obvious Level 3s they've early-revealed recently.

Technically Super Mighty Smash does involve him throwing his hammer (epic move btw). I assume they didn't give him a projectile move based off his hammer because it would return back to his hand... acting exactly like Capt's shield.

Umm....Actually he does, specially the new Thor which is powered by the Thorforce(used to be Odinforce). The Hammer grants him the ability of flight, thus why he can float without hurling the hammer in any direction. He does use the hammers direction when he needs to travel long distances because it folds his speed to 3xlightspeed. Thor does not emphasize on aerial combat anyway, he's more physical, counters and bolts in the comics are his gig and finishing blows early in the fight. Grabs!? kinda stupid for an over 1000 year old warrior/god that is armed with a mystical mallet. I'll use him anyway though, he's whats holding to the mvc3 installment.

I was hoping for Odinson to make it in and here he is. Awesome.

Now if they just throw in Nova I'll be complete (since I can't hope for Daredevil anymore, dammit.)

@ Gattsu

No it just means he has a lot of mobility in the air. Meaning instead of just dashing right or left in the air, he can do a quick dash in any direction. Meaning you can really throw off you're opponent and react to dangers in the air better.

The son of Odin has arrived to beat peoples brains in!

Super mighty smash should be a air to ground hyper not just ground would be epic if you can do it in the air.

What's up with the pictures? Colors 2 and 4 are reversed. The guy that made those 2 pics made Thor face leftwards and then just reversed the pictures. You can tell by looking at his belt buckle and the strap that goes across his chest. That's sloppy.

ShadowDragonNinja said on March 8, 2011 at 4:49 p.m.

okay, okay, quit saying "That's sloppy". I get the picture?

thor CAN combo after his command throw... wtf is this?

Snow_Monkey said on September 18, 2011 at 10:40 a.m.

You misread it. The guide said there is no way to combo INTO the command grab. Not after.

General_Awesomo said on December 6, 2011 at 12:42 p.m.

So yeah, the costume colors 2 and 4 used to be facing to the left and reversed. With the addition of the UMvC3 colors, they fixed this. I also like that the Capcom characters are facing right, while the Marvel character are facing left. That's neat, thanks.

If someone wanted to update information on a page (like, say, Thor's) how would they go about doing that?
