Dormammu Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Moves, Combos, Strategy Guide

Dormammu has often been compared to Dhalsim and Blackheart, as he's a keepaway and zone character that specializes in controlling space.

He has many ways to limit his opponent's options and keep them in certain areas while powering up his own attacks.

Dormammu has an 8-way air dash and a teleport move which can help him escape some bad situations and his move set offers players a ton of different options.

Some of his moves will leave gaps which your enemy can slip through, but when coupled with well timed assists he can be very difficult to consistently get in on.

When your opponent gets inside though, they can take quick advantage of Dormammu's low health and lack of up close moves to get out of bad situations. If you cannot keep your enemies at a distance, Dormammu can be killed very quickly.

He also has a big hit box and moves pretty slowly overall, so there aren't many opportunities for him to rush down.

Special Moves

Dark Hole (Portal)


The button pressed controls the placement of the portal on screen. Light is close, Medium creates a hole near the middle of the screen and Hard makes one which appears at full-screen distance.

Purification (Energy Column)


Dormammu creates a column of energy that rises up from the opponent's feet, this will hit grounded enemies.

The attack button pressed determines where this appears at. Light is close range, Medium is the middle of the screen and Hard is far away.

Teleport (Mass Change)

This can be used to escape bad situations and put Dormammu away from his enemies.

Dormammu can briefly fly through the air.

Dark Spell: Destruction

Dark Spell: Creation

You can power up Dormammu's fists to give him a new set of special moves by doing the motion above and using the Light and Medium attack buttons. Doing the same motion and pressing the Hard attack button will unleash your powered up attack.

You can repeat the Dark Spell Creation/Destruction commands up to three times with each instance powering up the resulting attack a bit more. Here's a breakdown of what they do.

Dark Spell: Creation (Blue glow)
1st - Creates a spike that comes out of the ground.
2nd - Creates multiple spikes along the ground.
3rd - Sticks the opponent to the ground, slowing down movement and preventing them from jumping.

Dark Spell: Destruction (Red glow)
1st - Creates a small explosion.
2nd - Fires off a medium range explosion.
3rd - Huge full-screen explosion.

Powering up Destruction and Creation (Red & Blue glow)
This lets you shoot down hell fire from the top of the screen.

Hyper (Super) Moves

Chaotic Flame

This is your standard beam Super. It shoots a steady stream of fire straight ahead.

Stalk Flare


This is similar to Dhalsim's Yoga Catastrophe (Ultra 1) in Super Street Fighter 4. It shoots out a ball of fire that will track your opponent wherever they go — even if they jump. This can set up some tricky blocking situations or be used defensively as an obstacle to buy yourself time to escape.

Dormammu creates a small swift moving projectile that causes a wall bounce effect if it connects, allowing you to combo your opponent after landing this move.

He really does seem to have that Dhalsim aspect to him in the sense that he plays a good keep away game, but once you get in on him he will be rushed down to death. He seems like he will be an above solid character from what people have reported. With balance tweaks still in effect it's too early to speculate on all that though.

dormammu is scrub tier ,, stalk flare ~to~ x-factor ~cancel to~ another stalk flare = 25-35% (lifebar) of cheap damage on block! if u get hit 50-75% damage! i saw this on a couple few videos from the demos(beta), hope they fixed this damage scaling on the final version!

I'm sure they'll fix the scaling on it, but god I'm looking forward to trying him out. He's one of the biggest characters I'm interested in playing as right now.

@3: Dude, cancelling a hyper combo with X-factor into another hyper combo is supposed to be a high damage strategy. It looks like it's a 50-75% damage technique for most every character.

I'm more interested in his normals. Blackheart could fight up close and pressure but this guy seems more reliant on special moves. I'll have to wait and see like everyone else.

I always thought he had low health. He's rocking a solid 100,000! That's rather insane for a keep away character with high damage output. In fact, he has higher health than 21 other characters! And only 8 other characters have harder hitting normals.

He has the best Level 1 Hypers in the game. Stalk flare hits 20 times and will be on the screen forever until it connects as long as Dorm is not hit. Does crazy amounts of chip - use with XFactor to get two of these out. Also use this with his teleport to get behind them - just like Dhalsim would do.

Chaotic Flame has insanely fast start-up and can punish a lot of things. You can even combo/cancel from a Dark Hole on reaction if your fast enough. Does great damage for a level 1.

Hopefully that will help some people out. His really only downfall is he can be quite slow on the ground. Rush-down is not advised! hah

I will be using Dorm, Skrull, Sent... look out!

here are some useful moves for dormammu use the power of the creator twice and power of the destructor once to do a really big meteor shower. use power of the destructor twice and power of the creator once and he will send up a huge spike and two small meteor showers to each side of the spike.use power of the creator once and the power of the destructor once and you do a small meteor shower no matter witch one you do first or second oh btw i figured out how to do the move where he set the ground on fire. down diagonal heavy punch hope this helps you guys

#10 Down Forward H is his Flame Carpet, which sets a flame on the ground. Only one on the ground at a time, useful for keep-away.

I know it's silly to ask [depending on who I'm asking] But does anyone know if Dormammu's colors are references to other marvel characters?

I feel like Color 2 is a shoutout to Mephisto...
