Morrigan Aensland: Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Character Guide

Character Overview

Morrigan is a character with a lot of flexibility in terms of gameplay. She is built for both rushdown and zoning, and has great hit confirms along with a quick overhead dash.

Her projectile is very good and works great as an assist, making her a desirable team character. There are very few characters as solid as Morrigan in the roster.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Button Move Key

+ One of the best fireballs in the game.
+ Instant overhead dash.
+ Great anti-air game.
+ Good hit confirms with fast normal moves.
+ Very quick footspeed.
+ Has a command grab with a lot of range.
+ Great aerial moveset.

- Level 1 Hypers are very unreliable.
- Combos are average in damage output.
- Dash is slower compared to the other characters.

Morrigan's Dash

Morrigan has a unique dash. When she starts up, she flies off the ground, opening up all her moves as overheads.

There is some startup delay before you can attack from her dash, but if you press up-forward after the dash startup and then instantly press an attack button (preferably her Medium Attack) you'll fire out one of the fastest overhead normals in the game.

The longer you hold the joystick in the direction you are dashing, the farther you will go. Morrigan's dash is slower than most, but the distance she can travel is pretty far.

Soul Fist (Fireball)
Morrigan's projectile is very similar to Akuma's fireballs from the Street Fighter series. The hitbox is very large and this makes it difficult to avoid.

When used in the air they travel at a 45 degree downwards angle. You can hover in the air and continuously fire these off to keep out short-range fighters. It's wise to keep an eye on your opponent while doing so in case they try to find a way around your wall of fireballs.

The startup time for all the Soul Fists are the same, but the Light version travels the slowest and Hard the fastest. Mix up the speeds of your fireballs to be more confusing to your opponent. If you're getting Shadow Blades by accident, make sure you return the joystick to neutral briefly before firing another fireball.

As an assist, this projectile is one of the best because it controls a lot of ground space.

Shadow Blade (Dragon Punch, Shoryuken)
Morrigan's primary anti-air. It has deceptive horizontal range and some startup invincibility.

The Light version is the safest, but the harder versions are definitely punishable because Morrigan floats to the ground helplessly. If you use the Light version and then immediately Baroque, you can get an overhead hit on an unsuspecting opponent.

Drill Kick (Shell Kick)
When you're in the air, this command makes Morrigan's legs turn into a drill and she launches herself at her opponent. Hits multiple times.

This move doesn't have too many uses, though it does knock down on hit. While it has a lot of air priority, it's mostly used to end air combos as a hit confirm into Darkness Illusion. It's poor at applying air-to-ground pressure.

Vector Drain (Command Throw)
Morrigan's command grab. It has a lot of range, and aids in Morrigan's rushdown playstyle. If you've sufficiently frightened your opponent into blocking, go ahead and grab them with this.

You can combo into this grab, but it's not worth it; chances are that a followup air combo to whatever normal you just landed would be more damaging. All versions of this move are the same, regardless of the strength of the button pressed.

If your opponent is a Giant character, then you can walk up to the Giant before the round starts and immediately Vector Drain them the moment the match begins. The Giants cannot jump away in time and have no special or normal moves that come out fast enough to prevent Morrigan from doing this.

Hyper Moves

Finishing Shower (Level 1)
This makes a bunch of missiles fire out from her wings. It is impossible for Morrigan to combo into this Hyper from any of her moves, even with the use of Baroque.

While it's slightly more damaging than most Level 1 Hypers (if all of the missiles land) it's mostly used for chip damage and for stalling time. There are some important elements to this Hyper, however.

The first is that Morrigan recovers from her Hyper animation even while there are still missiles on the screen. The second is that you can control the path of the missiles with your joystick. If your opponent gets hit with this Hyper, tap the joystick up and down so that all the missiles flow into one path.

In a Cross-Over Combination, it's not very good. The firing animation simply lasts too long for Morrigan to do anything, and if you try to use it to add extra damage you'll discover the difference is almost negligible. If you have three Hyper meters, go for Darkness Illusion instead.

Valkyrie Turn (Level 1)
Morrigan flies off screen and then returns. With another press of the button she turns into her drill form. During the descent she is totally invincible. It's one of the most damaging Level 1 Hypers in the game, and you can combo after landing it. It also does a huge amount of chip damage.

The only problem is that the startup is huge. You can steer Morrigan's entry path with the joystick, but it's more than likely that you will either undershoot your opponent and not get the full damage that this move offers, or you'll fly over their heads harmlessly.

There are some Delayed Hyper Combo (DHC) setups that let you combo into this move, but the amount of trouble balanced with reward just doesn't work out.

Darkness Illusion (Level 3)
If this lands, Morrigan and Lilith team up to beat the tar out the opponent. This is the Hyper you will want to be saving meter for as it is really easy to combo into and isn't affected much by damage scaling.

Most players don't bother Mega Crashing Morrigan's combos because they are rather weak, but once you get three meters you'll be forcing your opponent to give up meter left and right.

Morrigan braces herself and throws out spikes that knock the opponent down. It knocks the opponent away quite a distance and can be used as an anti-air if you space it correctly.

Succubus Scythe
This is Morrigan's second launcher. It only launches an opponent who is already in the air, so you can land it after a sweep and jump to cancel it, just like a regular launcher.

Since Morrigan's launcher is actually a spike that comes out of the ground, it can be counted as a disjointed hitbox. It can also be used as an anti-air if you can predict an attack, since it has a lot of vertical range.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Storyline

Morrigan is a mysterious succubus and the ruler of Aensland. Born to one of the noble families in the Makai world, Morrigan detests boredom and ventures down to the human world in pursuit of stimulating events.

She has large wings comprised of bats that also act as her fighting assistants. In battle, her wings can morph into a wide range of weapons to suit her needs, including a drill, blades, a jet booster, and many other forms.

Character origins

Morrigan Aensland is originally from the Darkstalkers video games by Capcom. She's a sexy succubus who lives for the thrill of battle. While a succubus is generally considered to be an evil entity, Morrigan is not inherently evil, as she's more of an anti-hero character.

In Darkstalkers lore, Morrigan is considered to be a very powerful character.
