Step Up Your Game: Chapter 14 - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tier list

Written by Justin Wong

Hey guys, this time this tier list will consist of the cast in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Now before I start I just want to say this is my opinion on all these characters and anyone can disagree or agree.

In the partner section, the people listed there can be an assist that would be helpful or they can use the assist to help their game. For example: Wolverine loves Tatsu assist but Akuma loves Dr. Doom assist. You might see a lot of Doctor Dooms, Vergils in those sections, just a heads up. =p

I will have a grade system running from S+, S, S-, A+, A, A- B+, B, B-, C+ C, C- and D with S+ being highest and D being lowest.

Hit the link below to check out the list.

Grade: S+

Pros: Amazing defensive normals against rush down characters, Fireball is very good to throw out as a defensive tool, Astral Vision is amazing and very hard for characters to stop the fireballs from behind. Shadow Servant super has high invincibility, Dark Harmonizer assist is very hard to punish, Able to steal meter with her Soul Drain, her unfly is 0 frames which makes it hard to punish her for throwing a fireball in flight mode. Very good air mobility.

Cons: Poor ground mobility and has no dash there, loses if you can bait her to push block which causes her to do a back dash fly. Combos are not very damaging.

Team Position: Point, Middle.

Partners: Dante, Vergil, Dr. Doom, Strider, Hawkeye, Magneto.

Grade: S+

Pros: High damage combos, good priority and range on all his normals. Able to nullify projectiles with certain normals that use the actual blade, like st.H and S. Spiral Swords super is too strong and stops momentum from opponent. Devil Trigger boosts all of his special moves and enables him to air dash in the air. Probably the best X Factor 3 comeback in the game. Helm Breaker very strong priority which has the highest success rate for "Happy Birthdays." And Round trip glitch pressure too strong.

Cons: Low health and bad air mobility when not in Devil Trigger. Also relies too much on meter.

Team Position: Middle, Anchor.

Partners: Akuma, Frank West, Dante, Morrigan, Strider, Zero, Dr. Doom, Magneto, Nova, Wolverine.

Grade: S+

Pros: Amazing close and mid range normals, good air and ground mobility due to his teleport dash. Buster cancel into any special move is very strong to start mixups or keep pressure. Very hard to block his incoming mixups and able to make the game single player. Level 3 able to hit point and assist character.

Cons: Low health, high execution character and loses to strong zoners unless Zero has meter.

Team Position: Point.

Partners: Dante, Vergil, Strider, Dr. Doom.

Dr. Doom

Grade: S

Pros: All three of his assists are amazing, good air and ground mobility. Footdive is very strong to just mash to capitalize off opponent's miss timed combos. Able to spam Plasma beam from full screen. Amazing air throw and OTG conversions with his combos.

Cons: Gets lamed out by strong zoners, very hard to tech throws because if he whiffs a back throw attempt a hidden missile comes out.

Team Position: Middle, Anchor.

Partner: Amaterasu, C. Viper, Dante, Morrigan, Strider, Vergil, Zero, Dormammu, Magneto, Phoenix, Wolverine.

Grade: S

Pros: Amazing ground and air mobility, Great anti air with standing Light. Very good air hit confirms and high damage combos. Gravity Squeeze very useful to use in any combo and amazing air throw conversion into combos. Magnetic Blast and Disruptor are very strong tools to keep away.

Her air throw conversion into combos are amazing and her EX moves are very good tools to open people up. Also able to setup unblockable setups with the use of certain assist.

Cons: Relies on her EX moves too much which can cause her to waste her meter if baited. Her normals have no reach so must rely on direct confrontation.

Team Position: Point.

Partners: Dr. Doom, Amaterasu, Dante, Strider, Vergil.

Grade: S-

Pros: Great ground and air mobility. Amazing close and mid range normals. Great special moves. Able to transform and come back to life as Dark Phoenix. X Factor 2/3 so strong which can demolish a whole team with her trap mixups during Dark Phoenix mode.

Her power slash move is a very good projectile to leave on the screen to help her defend against rush down characters. Very strong in the X Factor comeback area.

You really think Firebrand's that good? I wouldn't have thought.

HyperGadoken said on May 15, 2013 at 3:55 p.m.

system goes from S+ to C and Hsien-Ko's a D.
Does that mean that Hsien-Ko is Hsien-Ko tier?

Catalyst said on May 15, 2013 at 3:59 p.m.

The letter grade thing was actually a typo on my part, I didn't edit closely enough, my apologies.

mozart0341 said on May 15, 2013 at 4:12 p.m.

Good list over all, cant wait to see the Marvel side and all I wish someone would do a updated Team Tier list.

MasterCheeze said on May 15, 2013 at 4:13 p.m.

Viewtiful Joe with that small hatbox.

JMJ_X said on May 15, 2013 at 4:18 p.m.

justin also forgot to mention that jill has the best and the most mix-ups in the game.

JMJ_X said on May 15, 2013 at 4:20 p.m.

damn he stated it. jumped the gun that time

DuskBlade said on May 15, 2013 at 4:30 p.m.

Frank is ok but Firebrand looks overrated

xBMxSage said on May 15, 2013 at 4:35 p.m.

I really have to disagree with Ryu being over Chun-Li. She matches Ryu in damage, even more depending on assists, and has much better mobility and mixups and builds much more meter.

xBMxSage said on May 15, 2013 at 4:41 p.m.

Also, Strider is not a very good partner with Nemesis. Trust me, I have first hand experience. Nemesis lacks an OTG to combo if Strider hits unless he supers.

InitialR said on May 15, 2013 at 4:43 p.m.

I think the reason why chun-li is below ryu is because of how high her execution is. She is arguably the hardest character in the game to learn. Also Sstrider keeps people from staying in the air. Nemesis air game is atrocious

Skye said on May 15, 2013 at 4:45 p.m.

Happy to see Amaterasu high in the tier list :)

killerkalmah said on May 15, 2013 at 4:49 p.m.

Dante is definitly A+ his anti air game may not be the old one but is very good and his mixup game is one of the strongest, beside that little thing this is by far the best list i have ever see in UMVC3 era. I agree with V.Joe his gameplan is very solid and his V. God Hand is so good also Wesker may not be the same but is still very good.

InitialR said on May 15, 2013 at 4:52 p.m.

Wesker is the BORDERLINE. He seperates the High Tier from the mid/low tier. I've always thought that and I see i'm not the only one.

xBMxSage said on May 15, 2013 at 5 p.m.

@12 - I don't think high execution should really shape a tier list. It all just varies on the payout which her payout is pretty damn good once you properly learn how to use all of her tools. With Nemesis and Strider, that's partially true but it's just not that beneficial. Plus, the DHC from Nemesis to Strider is pretty awful unless timed perfectly.

Nemesis i don't care for how tiers talk about you. You will always be in my team every match.

Tensa said on May 15, 2013 at 5:34 p.m.

I agree with jill's placement she is pretty sick I remember playing a jill player on psn who was really strong very hard to block her mixups

InitialR said on May 15, 2013 at 5:36 p.m.

It was probably me. Do you remember the team used? I'm pretty ssure I did play you looking at your psn. I remember playing somebody named ichigo...

Freyzii said on May 15, 2013 at 6:22 p.m.

Yeah looks about right. Curious about his opinion of a lot of characters so I can't wait for the follow up.

Jalenp69 said on May 15, 2013 at 7 p.m.

Firebrand is never overrated, people just don't play him. Besides the obvious fact that he can literally make the game a 1 player game, he is a very slimy character overall. He's small so he can dodge a lot. Also he has erratic, but very good, movement so it's hard to nab him there as well. He has a lot of ways to begin a combo and any combo he starts can pretty much wrap the game up (with the proper execution and teammates of course). He can zone pretty well because his fireball is really good in terms of durability and he can chuck it at multiple angles.

I don't even play Firebrand, I just watch what ApologyMan and a lot of good players online do. This character is definitely very solid, top 15 imo.

Lavama said on May 15, 2013 at 7:36 p.m.

Firebrand is definitely top 15, but I feel Justin missed one character with him. Er, Nemesis. Call me crazy, but I feel they work together.

spotlesseden said on May 15, 2013 at 7:42 p.m.

Dr. Doom is SSS tier, try to play this game without Doom or win a major evenout played Dr. Doom even once.

ScrubStep said on May 15, 2013 at 8 p.m.

IDK about Zero's high execution level, im assuming hes mostly refering to lightning loops but comon. Vipers execution levels wernt even mentioned in her cons and her game is much more dependent on her execution, wereas you can still be an effective zero player with resets instead of loops.

Grimoires said on May 15, 2013 at 8:21 p.m.

@26 - Yipes and JWong have won majors without using Dr. Doom.

Carls493 said on May 15, 2013 at 8:35 p.m.

Nice. Arthur is higher than I thought he would be.

Remember that Part 1 of this list is Capcom characters only, guys. Part 2 will have all of the Marvel characters.

HyperViperNZ said on May 15, 2013 at 8:55 p.m.

Viewtiful Joe has a small "hatbox" does he? Anyway, I guess this tier list is okay so far.

Tensa said on May 15, 2013 at 11:29 p.m.

eh sorry @InitialR its been a while since I've played the jill player maybe it was you also I don't really remember the team :(

Keetro said on May 16, 2013 at 12:45 a.m.

Hopefully they will make a change to the system, I think He placed Morrigan too High S maybe but not S+ off just annoying, she isn't great with Most of the cast, and really doesn't Help others as far as combos

HolyGhost said on May 16, 2013 at 1:52 a.m.

where's doom?

PowerBeard said on May 16, 2013 at 2:20 a.m.

Phoenix Wright isn't better than Hsien Ko. This game is all about mobility and good, safe normals and block strings. Phoenix Wright has none of that unless you're in turnabout. He's a defensive character who can fapatalize of mistakes unless in turnabout mode which will last long enough to kill 1 character then BAM useless no evekdence again. Maya also comes out too far making so that wolverine can dive kick over and
Attack you.

Hsien ko has better mobility, offers a useful assist which can be made better

PowerBeard said on May 16, 2013 at 2:27 a.m.

@34 cant* capitalize*
Basically his bad match up is the whole cast. Comparable to Sean in 3s

the_main_event said on May 16, 2013 at 7:02 a.m.

Haggar on anchor? Just cuz that blue water guy gets away with it does not make it cool...first or second only!

rogueish1 said on May 16, 2013 at 7:43 a.m.

Haggar on anchor is pretty common. Either his assist is used until the point and middle character die or he is on point and switched out.

I hate to say it but I forgot Trish was in the game.

JMJ_X said on May 16, 2013 at 11:48 a.m.

it is simple. Jill is a borderline character with one of the best offensive styles in the game plus a easy TAC infinite. In order to jump up the tier she needs a projectile period. The machine gun for instance will be perfect. it can be a quarter-circle back move that hits 3 time doing 70-85 damage with all light, medium and heavy

supernovajm said on May 16, 2013 at 6:31 p.m.

I'd like to hear Justin's reasoning for the arthur partners, because I'm pretty sure he's never seriously given it any thought

DevilMaySpy said on May 16, 2013 at 7:33 p.m.

I like this list. Top 5 imo is Morrigan, Zero, Vergil, Spencer, and Wolverine.

Branflakes said on May 16, 2013 at 9:25 p.m.

spiderman should be a tier hopefully

HyperViperNZ said on May 16, 2013 at 11:33 p.m.

Pretty solid list but there's no way that Hsien-Ko is worse than Phoenix Wright. She pretty much has everything. All she lacks is the speed to pull it off.
Top 5 imo is Zero, Vergil, Doom, Spencer, Viper.
Morrigan would be a close 5th but she ain't that great on her own.

SJCrew said on May 17, 2013 at 2:36 p.m.

Man, people rating one of my favorite Capcom characters EVER (Morrigan) at S+ brings tears to my eyes. I hope Chris G shows everyone the meaning of Soul Fist at EVO'13 or I don't think I could spectate this game anymore.

MuayThaiBushinryu said on May 20, 2013 at 8:13 a.m.

Doom is top tier. Why? Cause... FINGER LASERS.

TheTierCritic said on May 28, 2013 at 9:38 a.m.

In a way you're right, but there are still things that Wright is better at than Hsein Ko. Hsein Ko has the most awkward dash in the game, her normals are hard to land, and while her Golden Armor form does make her a better character, it doesn't really change an entire match like Phoenix Wright's Turnabout mode can. It does just come down to opinion, but I've always prefered Wright over Hsein Ko IMO.

thiagoeis said on June 4, 2013 at 6:36 a.m.

I agree with the most part of the list, but I don't think Chun is a good anchor. Her assist is great to lockdown and incoming mixups, but it's really hard to control her in x-factor lvl3 and it's even harder to comeback if your opponent has a keepaway character like Doom. She is scary with x-factor, but not that threatening. Imo, her best team position is on point because of the meter building and the mixup potencial with 2 assists available.

NyuBomber said on June 4, 2013 at 2:12 p.m.

Re-posting for completeness:

Knock X-23 down a + sign (She is not better than Dante. Or Skrull. Or Wesker. Etc.)

Push Trish up a + sign.

Knock Chun down a + sign.

Move Hsien Ko to D- grade. Only Gold-mode Pendulum saves her from F. Give Capcom the F for how they F'd up implementing her.

InitialR said on June 4, 2013 at 2:13 p.m.

Holy sh!t the marvel part is all wrong. He had the capcom part on the money then he just went ape Sh!t with marvel. X-23 A+? Ghost rider above any of the bottom tier? Damn man it WAS a decent tier list...

IMainDanHibiki said on June 4, 2013 at 2:16 p.m.

You know, if Turnabout Mode lasted the whole match (Except after level 3) then he'd be viable; as well as making bad evidence a static 10% and meat a static 5%.

Wright has too many chances to get bad evidence. I can't tell you how many times I've had bad evidence chains 7+ long. Get rid of that large chance, and you have an A tier character right there.

abigor68 said on June 4, 2013 at 2:21 p.m.

what is this "instant overheat" mechanic that you can do on MODOK? Do you pour water on him?

jk, nice list with reasoning for each character. Good stuff.

TheGamaniac said on June 4, 2013 at 2:26 p.m.

There's a few errors in the new set of characters... X-23's Team Position goes straight to listing her partners instead, and Skrull has both position and partner listings on the same line.

Rotendo said on June 4, 2013 at 2:27 p.m.

I agree with Chun's listing and am along with user: thiagoeis. Having used Chun in vanilla, she is execution heavy and hard to manage in XF Lv.3 > the fastest character in the game + execution heavy makes performing many of her c.m, c.h, jump cancels, and aid dash combos almost impossible without accidentally doing lightening legs. Very scary indeed with XF Lv.3 however, proves to be a great rushdown w/Sent, Doom, Mag assist (beams/drones/missiles)

Great to see that Strange was ranked A-, the more I see top players pick him up makes me happy. Wish he kept his airdash though < capable via H&H mode = broken. lol

thegoldencat said on June 4, 2013 at 2:33 p.m.

#53 Well spotted. 22 "amazing"s, which is in itself quite amazing.

xBMxSage said on June 4, 2013 at 2:46 p.m.

People should keep in mind that this is all based on his experiences and what he has seen players do with certain characters. Think about Ryu's position. Do you all agree that he's B-? The only reason Justin has him there is because of how well Rayray does with him but even Rayray had him lower than this on his list.

Personally I'm fine with X-23's placement because I think she's really being slept on. The only weakness she has is low damage but she has really good mixups.

And regarding Chun-Li being difficult to control in Lv 3 x-factor, I found a loop that she can do and it's rather simple and will kill any character without the use of meter. Though, in my opinion, her best position is middle since she can do her TAC infinite anywhere on the screen off of any direction.

_Klaatu said on June 4, 2013 at 5:48 p.m.

X-23 also takes pretty good execution, on top of having low damage. Characters that take good execution, but that can do good damage tend to be a more popular choice.

thiagoeis said on June 4, 2013 at 5:54 p.m.

In a nutshell: X-23 isn't A+ and everyone is fine with a Doom assist in the back. xDD

@59 I disagree with Ryu on point. I think he's more effective on middle, with a point character that can build meter for him. Don't get me wrong, Rayray does pretty well with the character, but it's not a good position for Ryu.
With Chun-Li anchor, I found a jump loop that can kill most of the cast, but I need to use meter in the end. I looked once or twice her TAC infinites, so... are they that easy to do? If they are, I guess she's better a middle character than point (regardless, I think I'll keep her on point because it's fun xD).

ekzplozion said on June 4, 2013 at 5:57 p.m.

Cons of Modok....Gets instant overheated all day...overheated...seems legit.

xBMxSage said on June 4, 2013 at 6:58 p.m.

@66 - We may or may not have the same jump loop combo. I generally can always get at least 1.1mil. It just depends on how I start the combo. Her TAC infinite looks easy but it's pretty difficult. You just have to keep close attention to her position against the opponent and know when to do two stomps instead of one. My teams usually have her placed second but I do have one team with her on point. I've always wanted a team with her on point and I finally have one that I'm comfortable with.

emc said on June 4, 2013 at 7:46 p.m.

i also dont get how hsien-ko could be listed as a point character when clearly she is best used as gold armor assist AND she has TAC infinites, even more reason to use her 2nd.

The_Barry_Gibb_Talk_Show said on June 4, 2013 at 10:07 p.m.

I commend J Wong's attempt at a tier list, it's the best one I've seen so far, but a very weak point I noticed was in the "partners" section. I feel he didn't do his homework as much in this section because he has the same small section of common "top tier assists". There is no mention of Iron Man anywhere, even in Captain America's section, who is undeniably his best assist pairing. Iron man has beam, combo extending , and OTG assists. Thats excellent range for assists going unoticed. But the list is still pretty solid. Good job.

fajrinazis said on June 4, 2013 at 11:21 p.m.

Good list, just a little bit disagreement on Haggar, his tier should be higher, at least he's on par with Stephen. Still a very good list.

xBMxSage said on June 5, 2013 at 10:16 a.m.

Just realized She-Hulk is higher than Storm. I know Storm's damage and meter build sucks but at least she can get in. She-Hulk gets lamed out too easily.

@81 - 950k IS average.

TheTierCritic said on June 5, 2013 at 11:31 a.m.

Why is everyone whining? It's HIS own tier list. HE thinks X-23 is high tier. HE thinks Ghost Rider is better than the bottom tier characters. HE feels Deadpool is mid-low tier. It's his own opinion, and you cannot change it. I disagree with a lot of things in this tier list. I feel Cap is too low, I don't understand this overheating concept on MODOK, and Morrgian isn't the best character in the game in my opinion. But so what? It's his tier list, he does whatever he wants. If you disagree, make your own tier list! Easy as that.

bahamutknightzero said on June 6, 2013 at 9:48 p.m.

@82 Storm gets in and then what?

The thing with Storm is that the lack of damage negates her mobility (which is why you only see people like Justin and Fanatiq run Storm outside of "DHC use only").

kingmedicine said on July 6, 2013 at 2:08 p.m.

for the most part tier list is solid, but I disagree with a few things playing Iron Fist just on point seems silly to me with how powerful his rising fang assist is, and its not to difficult to get into turnabout with Phoenix Wright with a solid DHC into Maya

ChangeIsStability said on November 29, 2013 at 7:51 a.m.

um, no need to give anyone ideas. of course there might be other good assist partners for characters. i know a great one for Spencer that wasn't mentioned. aint gotta say anymore than that.

ChangeIsStability said on November 29, 2013 at 8:23 a.m.

you are so cool.

Pwn_Star said on April 9, 2014 at 9:15 a.m.

Not understanding why Wesker is a good partner for Cap. It's a very weak combo extender/confirm, DHC is horrid, and none of his assists offer him great set ups or fix his holes in offense. His jaguar kick assist is actually better than his OTG for Cap...which says something.

War_Destroyer said on May 10, 2014 at 7:01 p.m.

Finally, someone who recognizes that Ghost Rider isn't on the bottom of the list.

Yeah, he sucks, but I never felt that he was below the likes of the lawyer or even Iron Fist for that matter.

ForcefulNinja said on April 10, 2015 at 8:14 p.m.

Here is my tier list:

This list does not include top tier or low tier. Simply top 25 and low 25. Slightly different. If there are empty spots in one of the rows, it means the character beside the row (ex. arthur) belongs in that spot. Hsien Ko is the same row as iron fist and above ryu, while phoenix wright is on the same row as ryu. Frank is lower than taskmaster, Deadpool is on the same row as jill and chris.

ForcefulNinja2 said on April 18, 2015 at 7:23 p.m.

(alternate account of ForcefulNinja)
Updated tier list:

If you have any questions ask me. This list is based on low 25 and top 25.

ForcefulNinja2 said on April 25, 2015 at 2:18 p.m.

Another tier list (discovered more tech):

This is based on top 25, low 25, and neutral game(how good can they zone, or open up the opponent). Consider mobility, and UMVC3 game options in neutral game (grabbing, raw tagging, countering, advancing guard. For mobility flight, teleport, wave dashing, plink dashing).

ForcefulNinja2 said on April 26, 2015 at 3:10 p.m.

Another one.
Based on low 25 and top 25.

ForcefulNinja2 said on May 5, 2015 at 6:09 p.m.

(In reply to myself) This tier list is based on neutral game, not combo damage, neutral game. By this I mean how good can they zone or get a hit confirm. For Ghost Rider i put him there because when he zones with standing hard into DP hard , it will dominate the characters below him. He also has a backwards auto dash when you move back and mash Light and Hard or Medium and Hard. This is very helpful for characters that like to take flight because SOMETIMES he can backwards auto dash to the other side of the screen. Other times he can use Heartless Spire. Teleporters rape Ghost Rider which is why there aren't any teleporters below him. DP hard covers jumping space, and can reach full screen by canceling medium into it. Heartless spire can be used for rush down and/or to protect him from incoming air dashes. Ghost Rider is not like any other character in Marvel. He is the face of a zoning character, that needs to zone in order to be dominate. He can play Point or Second.

ForcefulNinja2 said on May 16, 2015 at 5:25 p.m.

Ignore all of my other tier lists. This is a tier list I can agree on. Ask if you have any questions. Based on Low 25 and Top 25. Neutral game is the key in this tier list (zoning, hit confirms, mixups), not combo damage.

ForcefulNinja2 said on May 16, 2015 at 5:39 p.m.

Ghost Rider (Rider) and Phoenix Wright (P.Wright), are in the top 25 because of punishing common neutral game, slowing down momentum of their opponent by spamming their best air normal (Jump S and Fingers), and finally the ability to zone with godlike projectile that can cover characters that air dash (that isn't superjumped while doing it). These characters may not have mixups, incoming mixups, crossups, or incoming cross ups, but they make it all up for one they can accomplish now. Use the evidence with P.Wright to be effective and look for the open attempt to throw an objection (see Lythero's tutorial on him for more about his evidence). When he gets into his final form it is pretty self explanatory from their. Rider can zone with (L=Light, M=Medium, H=Hard, Dp= Dragon Punch Motion) H Dp H, H Dp L, M Dp H. To slow down momentum of your opponent spam Jump S. Throw in a Crouching H from time to time. Do not spam this. These characters are highly similar, and highly effective with the right assists.

You know what just ignore my comments...

KoryukenMotionHP said on March 20, 2016 at 6:38 p.m.

I actually tend to pair Morrigan with Phoenix Wright or Ghost Rider. They manage to work surprisingly well. Ms. Aensland's Shadow Servant can allow for combo extending assists like Akuma's Tatsumaki and Frank's Shopping Cart. Press/Break the witness can follow the same route. If you can catch the opponent with Phoenix Wright, you can catch the opponent with a standing H and reset for an air chain into a medium DP into Finishing Shower. The same thing can work in more or less reverse for Ghost Rider. Down the opponent, call in Hellfire or Heartless Spire, and use Finishing Shower. Phoenix and Rider, I've also noticed, are pretty hyper-reliant, making Dark Harmonizer an invaluable assist.

Wesker, Zero, and Amaterasu can also work pretty well. If you set Zero's assist as Vortex Dash, OTG your opponent with Wesker, catch them with Zero, you can hit-confirm Lost in Nightmares or Phantom Dance from his Heavy. But, if you're not fast enough, you can reset with the Rhino Charge. Zero and Ammy also benefit. With Zero, Wesker can OTG the opponent or wall bounce them, depending on your preferences. Ammy, though, Zero can juggle them after a heavy Cold Star, or reset a Reflector or Glaive combo with Wesker's gun.

KoryukenMotionHP said on April 17, 2016 at 8:13 a.m.

Finally, someone understands why two bottom-teir characters are on my main team! And they actually carry an S-teir character, if you can believe it.
