Step Up Your Game: Chapter 10 - Secondary characters

Having a secondary character is a very good thing, because there will always be a bad match up for your main fighter. The only problem is that most of the time, your secondary character might not be on par with your main character. Even the best players in the world have secondary characters at their disposal. Here is a few that you might know off:

MCZ|Daigo - Ryu, Yun (Secondary)
WW|Infiltration - Akuma, Gouken (Secondary)
EG|Justin Wong - Rufus, Adon (Secondary)
AVM|Gamerbee - Adon, Yun (Secondary)
BT|Dieminion - Guile, E. Honda (Secondary)
LU|Alex Valle - Ryu, M. Bison (Secondary)
WW|Ryan Hart - Sagat, Yun (Secondary)
and many more

Sometimes you don't see much of player's secondaries because most of the time their confidence isn't there. If you look at Daigo vs. Infiltration at the SF25th Grand Finals for Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012, I believe that Daigo would've done a lot better if he had switched to Yun. But, at the moment he might not have been confident. I believe the only player that does have the confidence to switch at the heat of the moment is Infiltration.

For example: Infiltration uses Gouken to counter Bon-Chan's Sagat and he was successful but you would think why wouldn't he just pick Akuma. Its still a good match for Akuma. Maybe Infiltration isn't comfortable with that particular match. And the proof is Infiltration's Akuma did lose to Bon-Chan in the 5v5 tourney even though it was one game.

I believe that the universal tier list is probably right, but that doesn't mean it's right for the player. I know that certain matches are 7-3 in the tiers, but every player has their own 7-3 that they despise. My 7-3 is definitely Zangief vs. Rufus. Its probably 6-4 at best, but in my mind its a 7-3. And sometimes your secondary character can help with that.

A prime example is that if I picked Rufus against AGE|Vangief in the loser finals of the Los Angeles Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Tournament, I wouldn't have qualified the way I wanted to. So since I use Adon and even though the match is slightly in favor of Zangief, it was just the better choice at that time, and it also secured me entry into the grand finals. Vance is really good against Rufus, but weak to Adon. When you see Snake Eyez, he is strong against Adon but not as strong in the Rufus - Zangief match up.

Secondaries are also good to have because it will help your overall understanding of the game in terms of patience, spacing, movement, footsies, memorization, and execution.

As you guys know that Rufus is a very offensive rush down type of character. He does not have the best footsies and the best patience but after learning a more footsie-based character like Adon, M. Bison, etc., it made me more comfortable with being patient and understanding how footsies work in SSF4 AE v2012. So with the fusion of learning opposite engines, it might be beneficial in the long run because you can add it to your game, OR you understand how to approach an opponent that uses that strategy better.

I talked a lot about the pros about secondary characters, but there are some cons for learning a secondary character.

1. Less commitment to main character.

2. Thinking that your secondary is better than your main.

3. Always have the thought of, "Why didn't I pick my secondary character in the match?"

4. Might be too difficult to juggle another character.

But the cons do not outweigh the pros, in my opinion. I strongly believe that learning another character will overall help you with your game and its fun to learn multiple characters and understand what each fighter is capable off.

I also think that in the future you will see a lot more of secondary characters coming out in 2013. SSF4 AE v2012 has got to the point where match ups do matter now. They are winnable but if its not in your favor, you have a hill to climb. Most top players will probably learn their secondary characters a lot more now to the point where they are comfortable to actually use them in matches that they were previously not comfortable in.

I personally will use Adon a lot more for matches that I know I have a better opportunity to win at. Also, GamerBee will use Yun to counter Akuma every time now and maybe we might see the same from Daigo.
