Capcom's VP on what it takes to revive old franchises

Capcom's VP on what it takes to revive old franchises Saw that Capcom's VP wrote up a reply about what it takes to have a game remade or have a sequel put out. Here's part of what he had to say:

We consider a lot of elements in such a decision.

"How did the last outting sell... and how long ago was it (has it had sufficient rest)"

"Are we continually getting requests/fanmail" is a major one.

"Are we seeing threads on boards around the net concerning the property's history?" is another.

"If it were to come back, what's an appropriate platform/delivery mechanism (is digital appropriate?)"

Street Fighter 4 Location Test Information

Street Fighter 4 Location Test Information Capcom-Unity posted some information from Scott Popular about the latest Street Fighter 4 location test. To check out the whole thing, plus some video footage, just click the link.

It's a solid overview of what to expect from the new game, although the grammar is bad. Here's a snippet.

Graphically, you really can't compare SFIV to anything else out now. The cell-shaded ink splash flares are hot! The color pallete used in SFIV is mad juicy! Capcom went on a nice little acid trip and decided to abuse the Crayola vivid colors crayon set to the max. The ultra bright color scheme really pulls the characters out and puts them in your face when the do their supers and ultras. Or when the do something big like Zangief's Spinning Pile Driver. Man, the last frame of it is so sick looking! Also if you look closely, Capcom has put a lot of working into giving the characters facial expression to kinda match the damage inflicted upon them.

Footage from a 1994 Official Super Street Fighter 2 Tournament

Spotted on the message boards that someone posted old school footage of an official Capcom Super Street Fighter II tournament.

The footage quality is pretty low, but it features some matches from Mike Watson, Jesse Howard, Eddie Ferrier and Steve Warwick. Worth checking out if you have some spare time.

And it also has some beta footage of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Changes to, now with less suck

Changes to, now with less suck As you may have noticed, I've dramatically changed the layout of the front page of This page will be updated with the latest news about Street Fighter and some other topics on the consistent basis.

Overall, I was never happy with the quality of the News Feeds on this Web site. Duplicates, irrelevant news items, and other things really didn't make for a great user experience, and so I've made this change.

The news feeds are still there for the one person that actually read them. I think he accidentally clicked the link a few times a month, but regardless I didn't think keeping this feature was a bad idea.

Also comments are still disabled because of spam attacks, but they will be making a return in the future.

Anyway, if you have a new items you'd like to see up here, just contact me here.

New Ryu Character Guide

New Ryu Character Guide We've posted the first part of the Ryu Character Guide for Street Fighter 3 Third Strike. It does not contain any videos yet, but I'll be adding those in the near future. Here's an excerpt from the guide.

Ryu is a very powerful character. He's capable of turning a losing match into a winning one in just a few moves. He's great at punishing mistakes, and many players feel he's at his best when applying a lot of offensive pressure to your opponent.

Some players prefer more of a turtle style with Ryu, which he can be effective at as well. Especially when coupled with setting up your opponent for an easy parry, and then counter-attacking.

Although Ryu is a middle tier character, he's deadly in the right hands.

Play Street Fighter games online with minimal lag

Play Street Fighter games online with minimal lag For those of you who may have not heard, GGPO is a bad ass little program that enables you to play Capcom fighting games online with little lag.

Ponder recently released RC3 (Release Candidate 3) which opened up GGPO to quite a few more games. GGPO is still in beta state, but it still plays better than any other online service I've ever used to play fighters. I highly recommend it.

Here's the current list of games supported.

Super Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Marvel vs. Capcom
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Dungeons and Dragons (Shadows over Mystara)
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
King of Fighters 2002
King of Fighters 98
Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3)
X-Men vs. Street Fighter

The new launches

The new launches Capcom has launched their new beta site for Capcom-Unity. It's really cool to see Capcom getting so involved with the community lately. They've been doing a ton of stuff to try and connect with their fans, and the new site is pretty darn cool. Here's a quick blurb.

We’ve been really happy with the way our new community efforts have been going at Capcom, and so we decided to build a new site for all of us to play with. There’s a lot of new toys, like photo and video upload, blogging stuff, expanded forum functionality, and other social network-y style goodies.

There’s some extra fun things too, like the ability to register your gamertags + see how your scores stack up against other Capcom fans, drag+drop config on your dashboard page, and of course points—you’re earning points for every aspect of your participation. Because we enjoy evil as much as the next guy, we’ve opted NOT to detail all the activities that earn you points, so poke around and experiment to discover them for yourselves.

Tell Capcom why you should be in Street Fighter 4

Tell Capcom why you should be in Street Fighter 4 Want to appear in the backgrounds in Street Fighter IV? Check out this post on Capcom-Unity.

The latest idea to sneak past was to have some Street Fighter fans' faces--yes, your actual faces--appear as background characters in Street Fighter IV.

What do you have to do to snag a spot in Street Fighter history? You send us... whatever (pictures, video, dissertation, limerick, daguerreotype, singing telegram) explaining why you should be in Street Fighter IV. Your reasons can be good or bad, great or small--doesn't matter. Champion player? World's biggest collector? Cosplayer supreme? Anonymous, undistinguished weirdo looking for the limelight? All are welcome to make their case.

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix Combo Video

Seth Killian posted a very nice combo video from the upcoming Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.

I'd just like to note that these were all done on a normal joystick, so no programmable shenanigans are going on here. Also, for some reason there are black bars showing on the left and right sides. It's strange because these didn't show up on the monitor I was using. In 16:9 mode, the screen should go all the way to the edge of the screen, but in the event that it doesn't, the screen will be fully scalable to fit any screen size, similar to Super Puzzle Fighter HD Remix. So, keep a sharp eye out if you can.

A few of the combos in the video are only possible in the new Remixed mode. Let's see if you guys are sharp enough to figure out which ones they are. I'm not sure how the quality is going to look after being posted on Youtube, but rest assured that it’s looking HOT right now. You guys are certainly going to be blown away by what we’re doing for a downloadable game. Till then, take care.

*Note that while damage has always been high in Super Turbo, many of these combos are performed against Akuma, who takes even more damage than most characters.
