The future is clearly online (for nearly all forms of visual entertainment). Far more potential bums-on-seats and money to be made versus a dedicated few who make the special journey to a tournament somewhere (incurring costs and inconvenience). Only thing slowing down the transition is connection speeds and developers acknowledging that speeds are fast enough to throw development resources behind online features.

I spent a stupid amount on the initial limited edition of the game, only to find out I couldn't have access to characters already on the disc. That, along with the inferior online experience, gems, and horrible music and backgrounds on some stages killed it for me. I also agree with #47 that the game was supposed to be a cash cow. SSFIV is almost always great online and more fun. Why bother in comparison? ...
