Think your internet connection is laggy? Try playing Street Fighter 2 Rainbow Edition with chat commands

A new movement has sprung up based around the idea of playing video games via the Twitch chat channel. One would think this would work a lot better with a title that didn't require precise movement and reactions — but that might take the fun out of this concept as well.

Twitch Fights Itself has been launched, allowing you to play Street Fighter 2: Rainbow Edition via the chat interface, where commands like 1up, 1down, 1left, 1hp are interpreted as in-game inputs.

This is quite the interesting experience, as the chat commands are fairly delayed from the on-screen action you see, and managing to land a single hit can be quite the feat. Still, if you want to see what this puppy looks like, you can find video below.

Be warned: The action here is about as exciting as watching a TV test pattern, but if you want to see this unique creation in motion, you can hit the jump for an archive of one of the sessions.

EX special moves and Ultras made their first appearance in Street Fighter: The Movie, the game; Alpha Counters were also included

If you've managed to get some hands-on time with any of the Street Fighter games that were released after the SF2 series, then chances are you've run into EX special moves, Alpha Counters, and Ultras at some point or another. These game mechanics are used very often in modern Street Fighter titles, and Capcom / Namco's recent crossover fighter, Street Fighter X Tekken, actually incorporated a form of all three into its gameplay.

Each of the aforementioned game mechanics has its respective game where it was originally introduced: Street Fighter Alpha (Alpha Counters), EX special moves (Street Fighter 3), and Ultras (Street Fighter 4). Or so we thought...

It may surprise you to hear that these concepts weren't actually brand new by the time those titles were officially released. A game that is only spoken about in hush tones throughout the Street Fighter community actually included these mechanics before or at around the same time as the 3 titles mentioned above.

That's right. Street Fighter: The Movie, the game, had EX special moves, and its own form of Alpha Counters and Ultras. Hit the jump, and we'll tell you all about it.

Author: If Street Fighter 2 didn't come around, Street Fighter 1 would have been more of a success

Matt Leone spent a year talking to all sorts of people involved in the creation of Street Fighter 2, and the resulting article he posted on Polygon is exceptional.

He also circled back with one of his fellow Polygon staffers who helped create the article to recap details, and provide more insight into some things that were somewhat glossed over in the piece.

For starters, Leone states that if Street Fighter 2 hadn't come out, SF1 would have been more of a success, as it was around that time that the 6 button configuration had been adopted in the original, and the game was starting to be played more.

Five for fighting: Guile's SF2 theme played during NHL game after fight breaks out

In a National Hockey League (NHL) game between the Montreal Canadiens and Dallas Stars, a fight broke out between Travis Moen and Antoine Roussel.

Hockey is a pretty awesome sport, because instead of guys receiving a suspension for fighting, and potentially being banned from the league — they're simply given a 5 minute penalty, and they can check back into the game.

Fighting is such a common occurrence at NHL games that the guys running the stadium audio often play music when a brawl breaks out, and apparently, the people at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas are fighting game fans, because a ways into this bout, they started playing Guile's theme for Street Fighter 2 over the speakers.
