Overdrive can be activated while guarding in BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma ver2.0; new trailer ft. Celica and Lambda-11

The autumn "ver2.0" update patch for the arcade release of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma in Japan will not only add two new characters (Celica, Lambda-11) and introduce new balance changes to its roster, but also tweak one of the game's key system mechanics, Overdrive, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine has revealed.

In BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma ver2.0, players will now be able to activate Overdrive even while they're blocking their opponent's attacks. Although Famitsu did not go into detail, this change to the mechanic may mean that you could potentially make supposedly safe-on-block attacks unsafe, by activating Overdrive.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Ver 2.0 - Celica's fireball, healing, footsie tools and Lambda-11's differences from Nu-13 shown on stream

Yesterday, on the Japanese stream program "Gachi de Game wo Yattemiyou" (or "Gachige" for short), Arc System Works's Toshimichi Mori made an appearance to show off Celica and Lambda-11 -- the new playable characters that will be added in an Autumn update to the arcade version of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, which is officially being called "Ver2.0".

Both characters were demoed pretty extensively on stream. Due to Lambda-11's addition into the game, In BBCP Ver2.0, Nu-13 will lose her Phase Shift move which allowed her to switch between two fighting styles, Dia Forma and Luna Forma. In other words, Nu-13 will permanently fight in Dia Forma, while Lambda-11 has nearly all of the moves formerly featured in Nu-13's Luna Forma fighting style.

Lambda-13 also has some new tricks up her sleeves, such as a jumping Drive attack that comes down at her opponent at a 45-degree angle and leads into a full combo.

Most of Celica's normals and special moves were also covered. It was mentioned on-stream that Celica's Drive button will perform auto-combos when pressed repeatedly, somewhat similar to that of Noel Vermillion's -- the D moves that come out will change depending on which direction you're pushing the stick in.

Check out the rather lengthy demonstration videos below.

Which fighting game player is the most popular on YouTube and Twitter? 34 of the biggest names in fighting games ranked

Who are the most popular fighting game players trending on YouTube and Twitter in the world? Japanese fighting game fan Tiger Knee Ojisan wanted to know the answer to that question, to the point that he decided to create a rather arbitrary method to judge the overall popularity of 34 notable names in the FGC -- and made a video to answer it.

His methodology for determining a player's popularity is quite simple: search on YouTube for the player's name, take the average view count of the top 5 videos listed for that player, and add it to the 10 times the number of followers he has on Twitter to drive that player's "PP" -- popularity points, we suppose.

Why 10x the number of Twitter followers? Beats me.

But surprisingly, in spite of the seemingly random formula, the list he has assembled seems to be pretty legit. In fact, the top two contenders on his list were even neck-and-neck in terms of the amount of PP they've amassed.

Check out the video below, and see if you agree with the list -- but do keep in mind that this is only one person's opinion of how a player's popularity should be tabulated.

Garireo: Bungee jumping in Las Vegas was what made my comebacks at EVO possible - 4Gamer interviews the BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma champ

Prior to EVO 2014, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma champion Garireo went bungee jumping in Las Vegas -- and that, he tells 4Gamer in a brief interview after winning the tournament, was one of the main reasons why he was able to make one amazing comeback after another in the losers' finals and grand finals of the tournament last Sunday.

In other words, ladies and gentlemen, we have a bungee jumping attraction in Las Vegas to thank for one of the biggest hype moments of EVO this year. Imagine that.

Having faced the scary feat of bungee jumping down 252m (the equivalent of 100-level building), Garireo was no longer afraid to perform Litchi Faye-Ling's dragon-punch reversal whenever he needed to, which he said was a huge factor in his comebacks.

This is a man who believes that mental and physical conditioning is just as important as one's skills in the fighting game; Garireo also talks about the sort of exercise regimen he puts himself through as part of his preparation for tournaments -- which is something that we don't hear about very often for pro gamers.

Check out our full translation of 4Gamer's interview with the EVO 2014 BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma champion below.

First-time champions, roaring crowds, and tears of joy - a closer look at EVO 2014's two most emotional victories

EVO 2014 was undoubtedly one of the most emotional events of the year, and quite possibly, ever. We witnessed numerous public displays of emotion as players expressed their anger, exultation, and even sorrow due to the outcomes of their matches.

Two of the most memorable EVO moments were birthed from the conclusion of the Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma and Killer Instinct tournaments, as the grand champions of each game, Garireo and RM|CD Jr. respectively, openly expressed their elation with literal tears of joy.

Many of the viewers in attendance and watching from the comfort of home reacted to these incredible victories with applause. Others, those who may not have truly grasped the amount of dedication and time these players put in to achieve their goal, responded with mockery.

Vince Ingenito, IGN's resident fighting game expert, was in attendance that day and experienced the passion first-hand. He has since put together an excellent piece that analyzes the reasons behind these champions' initial reactions to victory.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma's (arcade) Autumn update will introduce balance changes; 1st screenshots of Celica, Lambda-11, and Marie from P4AU

Now that the new issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine has officially gone on sale at newsstands in Japan today, has finally published the first screenshots of Celica A. Mercury and Lambda-11 in BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, as well as Marie who will be a post-launch DLC character for the console versions of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

We've already covered most of the information mentioned in the text of these articles -- but there were a few additional interesting tidbits not covered in the early reports.

For starters, it was mentioned in's BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma article that the Autumn "version up" update for BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma (arcade) will "not only introduce balance changes, but also two new characters". Although most of us expected the new update to contain balance changes, it's always good to hear confirmation on that.

Celica A. Mercury and Lambda-11 playable characters coming in an Autumn update to BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma (arcade)

This week's issue of Famitsu Weekly magazine is announcing on Thursday that Celica A. Mercury and Lambda (No.11) will be added as playable characters in an update -- coming sometime in Autumn 2014 -- to the arcade version of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma.

As Celica is a mage specialising in healing magic with no combat ability of her own (which had been the reason she was not playable, as series creator Mori Toshimichi explained in this interview), she will be fighting with the Minerva by her side, similar to the characters Carl and Relius Clover.

However, unlike Carl and Relius, Celica is said to be a character who possesses many moves that are "fundamental tools" in fighting games. As such, she is highly recommended to beginners who're playing BlazBlue for the first time.
