Cross ups, resets and Crush Counter combos; check out all this Laura tech from the Street Fighter 5 beta

Posted by John 'Velociraptor' Guerrero • November 6, 2015 at 12:47 p.m. PST

Though it wasn't available for long, the Laura build of Street Fighter 5 became playable yesterday. Wasting no time at all, players took this opportunity to start learning the ins and outs of the beautiful Brazilian fighter.

Street Fighter 5's relatively easy execution makes for a much quicker learning process when delving into a new character. This usually means it's going to be easier to hash out the basics, and so we're already seeing some decent tech with Laura.

The go-to "use as many resources as possible to get the most damaging, flashy combo you can" combos are in no short supply, but we also get to see some practical applications for quite a few of Laura's moves.

Her jumping medium kick is going to be very useful as it makes for a great cross up that she can follow with a full combo. We also get to see strong Crush Counter punishes, what to do when you score a stun and more.

Hit the jump for the Laura videos.

Little off topic, but Karin's reset is gone in this build

She looks easy to learn, but her biggest combos will most likely come from frametraps, which she seems to be built for. In other words, easy to learn, hard to play.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong.

Is this America only or something? I can't connect and I'm in Canada.

Forward Hp, Hp then V-skill

I don't know about the rest of the day, but it stopped working for me at 7 am. I had time to play about 30 minutes and, even though I was practicing Laura, I was forced to play with Karin and Rashid during real matches.

So 80% of these videos combos require a successful jump in and most of the others combos require either a crush count or Vtrigger cancel. The quality of the videos and uploaders efforts is great, but Laura herself seems quite limited in combo ability outside of jump ins and Vtrigger cancels. If a player has good anti air options and any kind of patience many of these combos will never land.

Well she is a grapple character, so that could be the reason why.

ShikariiXD said on November 6, 2015 at 1:10 p.m.

Her whole gameplan relies on pressure , mixups with her projectile and frame traps.

Her damage from command grabs looks low and people have been saying they feel her normals lack good range and her overall damage output feels somewhat low. Like I said great effort from the uploaders, I am just digesting all the content that has been posted by players on Laura in the form of message board posts and videos, that is all. Since PC didn't get any BETA Access their generous efforts and commentary are all I have to go on right now.

I feel like she could use a Makotoesque command grab (one that allows grounded follow ups) and higher stun if they are going to keep her damage where it is.

I wish they would have given her an accent, i do not like Laura's voice. or to be more precise it doesn't fit the character design imo

Lots of sexism on eventhubs. If Laura was a man or an overweight women no one would be complaining that she doesn't have any links. But because she looks the way she does, everyone just assumes she's a combo character. Tsk Tsk.

So she can confirm super off high or low, has a command grab that (ffs put on quick rise) seems to keep the opponent grounded a long time, has the best type of fireball for setups, a command forward or back dash in a footsie oriented game (the most useful thing ever and she has a command grab)!!!!, has a very long range overhead she can combo off of....despite having at first glance (still day negative several months/its a beta) poor defense she sounds really strong. No clue what people are talking about saying she looks weak

On Laura's low damage output:

Laura is a low damage character who can hit you a lot. That's fair, but it seams weak overall. The issue is that her V-trigger gives her a lot more stun. Which makes hitting you a lot suddenly more terrifying. Consider the following scenario:

Any V-trigger confirm will deal half stun. Which means the next touch will put you juuuust under full stun. Thats perfect because if you hit them with pretty much anything at all after that, you will get a stun. So you could be beating laura badly all match, but if she hits you with a fierce into V-Trigger then will put u at half stun, and will get a mixup. If she guesses right on that mixup, then the next solid hit, command grab, overhead, backdash overhead, or regular grab will win her the game. This does not necessarily require meter from Laura and we are generously assuming that the opponent is entering into this scenario with full life and stun.

Is anyone else starting to realize just how terrible this game is or is it just me? I REALLY want to like it, but man I just don't. I'm sad :-(

masquedmonk said on November 6, 2015 at 9:11 p.m.

The last video gave me a few ideas but I played with Laura non-stop for two hours. I know I was definitely not playing her to her full potential and she is pretty weak on defense without meter, I think. But for some reason I think I want to keep going with her. At least until I can check out Zangief.

I have basically given up on it and raised the white flag in defeat, it just isn't a fun experience for me or my friends to play (one of whom just refunded his PC pre-order of SF5 last night too). When people with BETA/Stress Test access are ignoring it for USF4 sessions or actually prefer just surfing the web to playing SF5, it says a lot.

Liamis1337 said on November 8, 2015 at 6:14 p.m.

I just find it stiff and lifeless. I've played it a lot over the past two betas and at first I thought that I was just so used to SF4 and that its virtues would surface in time. I just feel bored doing the same 4 or 5 hit simple combos and playing street fighter...which gets old real fast. SF4 has so much meta with the FADC mechanic and this is sorely missed in SF5. The graphics are a bit better and will improve a bit more between now and release but honestly it doesn't look that much better than SF4 as it is now. I think that unless Capcom adds some new mechanic, the game is in trouble of dying off quick. All that it needs really is some way of cancelling certain normal and specials into a dash forward or back to extend combos and add some unpredictability to the game.
