Is Dimps recruiting for Street Fighter 5? Capcom working with the developer on a new next-generation fighting game project

Posted by Cheng Kai 'KarbyP' Sim • September 1, 2014 at 11:10 a.m. PDT

Capcom and Dimps are currently in search of talented software engineers, CG designers and video game planners to work on a new fighting game for next-generation platforms, a front page ad on recruitment site Imagica Digitalscape has revealed.

Although Dimps -- the development studio that Capcom commissioned to make Street Fighter 4 and Super Street Fighter 4 -- was not involved in the development work for Ultra Street Fighter 4, Capcom's Yoshinori Ono has recently made the studio an offer to make a new fighting game that utilizes the latest cutting-edge technology, Dimps director Takashi Tsukamoto wrote in his address to potential applicants.

Could this new next-generation fighting game project be Street Fighter 5?

The title of the new game itself was not mentioned in the recruitment ad -- but maybe you can fish out some hints in the brief messages Yoshinori Ono and Takashi Tsukamoto wrote for potential applicants, translated by us below.

"...geared towards a worldwide audience" got me confused a little bit, but the "no.1 leading fighting game" thing got me hooked
also: please recruit Desk this time around

There are a lot of Japanese developers that only make games for Japan. Since Capcom is an MNC that releases games for a global audience, they are highlighting that fact in hopes that potential applicants will be more interested.

In their current financial position I imagine if Capcom are doing a next gen fighter then it will be SF5. Why would they do any of their other fighters when they need to be making paper asap

Now I bet we won't hear anything for a long time after this, which I'm okay with. I just want more information on stuff we can get now. SF 5 may be off in the distance, but I want something to feed me over until that comes out.

I thought we were passed this "hire desk!" phase.
Once again here is the reminder that Desk is absolutely not interested in testing fighting games as a job; Capcom reached out to him in the past and he declined. He does it purely for fun and doesn't want it to turn into work, said so himself.

Existent said on September 1, 2014 at 11:35 a.m.

Sounds like Street Fighter to me. I can't think of what else they might be referring to. Hopefully it's a new Alpha rather than SF5.

#12
SnakeX said on September 1, 2014 at 11:35 a.m.

Anyway, if it is SF5 it would fit into the timetable for the game that Seth Killian had given us when he was still community manager; sometime around 2019 or slightly sooner. Given that they're only in the recruiting phase, by the time they get going on development and all that they'd be hitting that time frame in terms of a potential release if it is in fact SF5.

''Although Dimps -- the development studio that Capcom commissioned to make Street Fighter 4 and Super Street Fighter 4 -- was not involved in the development work for Ultra Street Fighter 4...''

That explain why USFIV is so buggy... -_-

#14
Dracos_Wrath said on September 1, 2014 at 11:45 a.m.

They are the guys behind the SFIV series (except USFIV). What's the problem with them?

#15
SnakeX said on September 1, 2014 at 11:46 a.m.

USF4 is buggy because it was worked on by a fraction of the usual development team with a limited time frame due to the fact that the majority of said team was already working on other projects.

sfkm2 said on September 1, 2014 at 11:47 a.m.

Yeah I would rather have them go through with an inner company crossover than another SF game so soon.

But if it is infact another SF title make it good or else it will be another SFXT flop.

2D is way too expensive for a company that's having financial troubles to do. It's pretty much a certainty that this game will have 3D models. Hopefully, they'll do a Guilty Gear and it'll look godlike.

Not sure when they are hoping to release this game but if its 4 or 5 years time then I guess SF5 will be fine and for the moment I will put it out of my mind and enjoy other fighters im not getting hype for a game that far away.

I personally hope its CVS3 or Darkstalkers 4 but who knows what the title is if its a port of SF4 to next gen I wouldnt be surprised at this point even if they hyped it to hell first and then said oh its SF4 on PS4 and Xbox One before wondering why everyone gets pissed at them.

Another SF game possibly. which will probably in turn have like 4 or 5 subsequent iterations. how can i get exicted for this? look i love Street Fighter, and Sf5 will sell, but can we get something different? Fine they dont think games like Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, Powerstone, Red Earth would do well, i get it and they are probably right. So why not just do that capcom vs capcom game people have been asking for since they lost the marvel licence. No licensing issues and they can make money with dlc characters, stages etc. Didnt they say awhile back they were going to focus on more digital content to support there games. There you go. To be honest i'm kinda Street Fighter'd out, i cant be the only one. i didn't buy Ultra because of the Decapre bs. and before anyone has a fit i'm fine with it being a doll they should have picked any one of the 11 other dolls instead of cammy with a mask. This company is capable of so much more it just boggles my mind some the choices that have been made.

#57
mistersnowflake said on September 1, 2014 at 5 p.m.

Love street fighter to death but we have ultra now, fix all the bugs and let us have it for a few more years. Capcom All Stars right now, stop playing games capcom and make it happen.

#58
Sage_Liebert said on September 1, 2014 at 5:03 p.m.

If it's street fighter 5 then be continued after 3rd strike

If it's a capcom all-stars fighter, then have ryu from breath of fire

#59
Spaghetti_Time said on September 1, 2014 at 5:45 p.m.

It's too soon for SF5. I doubt it's a spin-off like Alpha, I can't imagine there being enough interest for Capcom to take a financial risk like that, at least not now.

We can speculate all we want, but I get the feeling we're all gonna be wrong.

#60
mooteh said on September 1, 2014 at 6:04 p.m.

OBJECTION!!!! NO MORE DIMPS!!! Even CyberConnect would be a much better choice than these guys who make mediocre DBZ games...

Capcom/Ono, please return to 2D art and gameplay so you can utilize GGPO. No more ugly 3D models and netcode that makes it feel like you're battling under water.

#61
spotlesseden said on September 1, 2014 at 6:22 p.m.

#63
enkil said on September 1, 2014 at 8:47 p.m.

I hear so much about this netcode being crap and that netcode being crap. What is a good netcode? And even if the netcode is great, won't the person's ping and connection speed and a zillion other conditions make even good netcode not work correctly. I hear GGPO is good, but have only seen it with games like Third Strike which are probably less demanding graphically and require less data to be moved. I've played Tekken Revolution and USF4 and for the most part it's okay, some days it's complete crap even on a 50mbps connection with Comcast, no wifi, direct cables.

#64
enkil said on September 1, 2014 at 8:59 p.m.

Also, if the state of graphical output - i.e. 720p, 1080p, 4k, 8k, and beyond (Red cameras) increasing constantly and the internet connection speeds increasing at a slower rate, won't that mean that in some way the connection will always suck. Think about it. It's a no win scenario. (i know you don't beleive in no win scenarios). It's just that I think we're looking for perfection in the wrong place. I hope for a good game, if the connection sucks a bit it could be other things and not the company's fault. Now in the case of DOA on the PSN...oh dear! For me it was unplayable. USF4 on the Xbox 360 has been good to me so far.

#65
Smorgasboard said on September 1, 2014 at 9 p.m.

ArcSys and SNK are both moving away from their signature 2D sprites to 3D for their next big title and for good reasons. Capcom would have to be to be both taking a huge risk and/or swimming in money to go the opposite direction.

Although, I'm fine with a Capcom All-Stars, I don't get why would people want Marvel mechanics in a non-Marvel game. Aren't there any interesting mechanics in the Capcom universe? Meh,I guess it's true that the public only wants what it knows.

You are right. Capcom cannot afford to take risks and fail at this stage in the game. It must be a profitable game, but one where the fans feel that they got their money's worth and are happy with the product. From the casual fan to the hardcore fan, they should all feel that they are getting a good product. Now add whatever dlc the fans demand. Give them Alex, give the Karin, the list goes on. And no the dlc costumes aren't that bad. Check into DOA and Tekken if you feel Capcom's expensive. Yes, they f'd up on Street Fighter X Tekken, but that could be fixed in two minutes. Drop the price of the game to 9.99 and the dlc characters to 4.99 Make amends somehow with the poor souls that had to pay out their eyeballs for those extra characters. Capcom has to make profit with this new game, but they must keep the customer in mind every step of the way. If they're customer's are happy they will do better. There is wisdom in EA when they say that they ignore the crap that's being said on the forum and just focus on the sales data. What people say and do are sometimes different things, but I think the FGC is another story. You piss us off and we will do an about face most of the time. So Capcom needs to make good money, by making a good product with some fairly priced dlc and not strikeout swinging for the fences. At least until their financial situation improves.

Yes. Three years from today. Easy to learn, difficult to master. Universally loved by the masses like Street Fighter II. A beautiful game with solid game mechanics that won't go over budget or over time by too much. They should have an even larger beta participation and larger time window. Something solid-- a strong base to build on for five years after launch.

We are ready. It is time.

moss_ur_mom said on September 2, 2014 at 3:01 a.m.

Ultra just dropped. Doubt it's SF5. Hoping it's an allstars game with the "VS" engine. Clone umvc3 and polish its up...keep the capcom cast (26) and add more characters from cap ips and Street Fighter (24). Would love to see Sagat and Vega super jump. Keep the same supers, add more status supers (ryu in denjin), remove TAC, call exfactor something else and nerf it too. So much freedom now cause marvel is out of the way. I guess this makes too much sense for it to happen. :(

Actually, the parry system is complicated. It changes the entire flow of the gameplay, and adds another layer to the fundamental meta, especially in terms of predictions and reactions.

While a Capcom All-Stars would be cool, I wouldn't want Ono and Dimps making that. I'd want the MvC3 team on that.

#81
Amerika said on September 4, 2014 at 4:42 p.m.

What are you talking about? GGPO is used with 2d games right now because they take so few system resources for the console to use that there is a lot of leftover processing power to allow for GGPO to run.

SFxT already used a crappy form of GGPO and it was better (on consoles) than SF4 netcode by a mile. Killer Instinct is pretty much regarded as the gold standard for amazing netcode and guess what it uses? A custom version of GGPO netcode.

I honestly don't know where this "GGPO only works on 2D games" comes from.
