Disappointing to see so little SF4.

Considering that this is a Capcom pro tour ranking tournament they should at least show top 64 to top 32. And USF4, one of the most interesting tournaments at the whole event, will hardly get streamd at all.

#12
AugustAPC said on May 23, 2014 at 6:12 p.m.

Apparently they're doing some sort of experiment where certain characters get banned throughout the tournament.

I have no idea how they get chosen or what the overall point of it is.

#13
spotlesseden said on May 23, 2014 at 6:56 p.m.

you stay free, we all know that we should never trust FGC's schedule. Almost in every major, they will just not some certain games on stream even though those games were on the schedule or switch to different time/stream without warning.

#14
kakarotto said on May 23, 2014 at 7:49 p.m.

The rules for this UMVC3X

When you sign up for UMvCX, you are going to be asked to choose one character to “X out”. Choose wisely, as you will not be able to change your choice at any time after signup. When you are assigned to a 16 man pool of players at UFGT10, that pool is going to have a list of banned characters. This list is made up of the “X’ed out” characters of everyone in your pool. No one in your pool will be allowed to choose any of these characters for the duration of the pool. The list will be on a whiteboard at your pool for easy reference.

Should you advance out of your pool and into a quarter or semi final pool, that pool will have a new ban list made up of the choices of the players in that bracket. These choices will not have changed from when they signed up, but will come together to form a new list for you to work around.

So what do you do? Do you ban Vergil, just to ensure you never have to play against him? Or do you hope that someone else you end up pooled with chose to ban him and use your choice on something else? If two or more players in the pool ban the same character, one of them wasted their choice!

#17
Mr_Salt said on May 23, 2014 at 8:23 p.m.

This was a poor adaptation of FGTV's ratio tournament. While the values for the characters in the ratio tournament could be argued all night it did have a point and it was executed well on top of just being a good, original idea. This UFGT's version is random at best and proves nothing since Vergil still gets through and it forces good players to play badly or get blown up by someone's whose mains were never banned.

#18
anthonygamer said on May 23, 2014 at 8:27 p.m.

It's not an adaptation of the FGTV tournament. Are you a 14er?

These tournaments where you can ban characters have been going on for years.

#19
Mr_Salt said on May 23, 2014 at 9:27 p.m.

Then the model was improved upon very recently by FGTV no matter what the history is. This was nowhere as entertaining as it could have been except for KBR running all over people because his team wasn't banned.

Pretty anti hype format. If they wanted to do bans they should have done 1 or 2 bans before every match, not random bans before the tournament where some players get to play 3/3 from their regular team and some others get 0/3.

Man, the teams are pretty lame in this auction. Why would they risk throwing Wong's team in there? If Justin had got that team then the whole tournament would have been over before it started. That would have been a disaster.

Seriously, though. So many repeat characters. I don't recall hearing any Ghost Rider, Iron Fist or Phoenix Wright...

I mean, mix it up for f*ck sake and balance the teams a little more...

I am disappoint.

#50
AugustAPC said on May 24, 2014 at 10:53 p.m.

4 Viewtiful Joe
4 Dr. Doom
3 Amaterasu

tons of other repeat characters -.-

So much lack of character representation in the one chance we have to see a game in which we NEVER see some characters used in tournaments.

i don't understand why ppl back up sf4 so much, and hold it so high. (very)short combos are opinion based, so i'll set that aside. there are just other fighting games out there that do what sf4 does, but better imo. SFxT for example. i guess i'm not the biggest fan of pokes, throws, and 5 hit combos. it's a lame core of play.

#54
ryukenchi said on May 25, 2014 at 12:39 a.m.

For all the idiots who this is their first ufgt experience. whole point of this major is special tourneys like acutions and mystery tournaments with randomizers and such.

the marvel tournament ban thing is something thats been going on for years in the fgc. the real marvel tourney will be sunday.

do some research before you run your mouth and sound like a complete idiot.

seriously all these morons whohave been watching streams for first time are pissing me off with their retarded comments.

this tournament was great. and i thought it was refreshing that they didnt show as much of such a washed out game as sf4. people who know were more interested in the mystery tournaments then boring old sf or marvel.

if you dont like the stream then turn it off. obviously you have nothing better to do in your life if youre watching 7 hours of something you dislike. get a life and STFU'

#55
AugustAPC said on May 25, 2014 at 12:44 a.m.

Combos are harder in SF:IV than others that are 10 times their length in other games. Besides that, there are plenty of combos that run up to 30+ hits in SF:IV, they're just not the bulk of fights. The game remains a two-player experience.

ergh, one of the reasons sf4 tourneys suck without japanese players are the ridiculous amount of counter picking by americans. If anything screams average level its counterpicking.
most of the time its not even a bad matchup.

#58
Sweet_Violence said on May 25, 2014 at 2:54 a.m.

There's nothing wrong with counterpicking. They're playing to win, not to satisfy someones version of "honor" when playing fighting games. Also, Japanese players (all areas really) have those who counterpick as well.

Most people grow tired of the endless combos and brainless approach of many other fighting games

#65
SuperRoadFighter said on May 25, 2014 at 8:10 a.m.

Justin Wong making Top 8 in winners has absolutely nothing to do with his character choice. Your statement contradicts itself naming a top player and then assuming the character they used must be top tier for them to make Top 8 with it. He would have made Top 8 no matter who he picked.

#66
Chi_Shinobi said on May 25, 2014 at 8:47 a.m.

kaeshi said on May 25, 2014 at 9:08 a.m.

Yes, some difficult combos that require good execution for great damage and then allow the opponent to at least turn the match around with some smart play. Rather than oops he fished out a single hit and now i can sit back and have no input whilst i get juggled for a hundred hit combo of death?

People prefer ssf4 precisely because it is more suited to competitive play.

I don't play UMVC3 and I don't usually watch the game, but what the hell was Chris G playing at in the losers' final? I always respected him for his well-rounded skills but that was just wrong. Maybe in casuals is okay, but at the tournaments, it's a low blow to the fans and to the players.

#77
spotlesseden said on May 25, 2014 at 4:46 p.m.

not sure what low blow are you talking about. Are you saying players aren't allow to play any characters that they want?

#78
InternetHandle said on May 25, 2014 at 4:53 p.m.

He does that. He would rather half-ass it and lose than try and lose cuz that way his fanboys can say he wasnt trying so it doesnt count or he was being generous and wanted to let someone else win. He isnt a mentally strong player and whenever he loses it always shows.

I would say he cant win without morri/doom/vergil but we all saw what happened even when he played mags. It is why Insaynne is right when he says Justin is the best UMVC3 player not Chris.

@78

Your right. Players can play any character they want, but when it comes to well-known players (unless you're so good at playing a lot of characters at highest level), then it's no good for those who know players like Chris G, J Wong etc.

@80

I watch him play SSF4 and he's very good but at times, I tend to question his mentality. He needs to work on that. I'm not 1 of those people who hate on players for the sake of it but I do point out some flaws in each player's gameplay. It looks like the debate between J Wong and Chris G will carry on for quite sometime.
