'And they will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger' - The five Japanese fighting gods are headed to EVO 2014

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • May 16, 2014 at 12:50 p.m. PDT

With Ultra Street Fighter 4 being the main game at EVO this year, it's safe to say that the majority of us are anxiously awaiting the event's arrival. However, thanks to Seth Killian, a prominent member of the FGC who needs no introduction, some news was brought to our attention that single-handedly elevated the hype levels to over 9000.

The five Japanese fighting gods are headed to Las Vegas in order to compete at EVO 2014. For those who may be unfamiliar with these players, the five consists of MCZ|Daigo, MCZ|Tokido, HORI|Sako, Haitani, and Nuki.

Each of these players has been blessed with divine fighting game skills that spans across multiple titles. The former four have been actively competing in the Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012 tournament circuit throughout the years, and even though Nuki hasn't allotted quite as much time with the game as the others, he's spent much of this year practicing up and clocking in countless hours with the arcade release of Ultra Street Fighter 4.

EVO 2014 is already shaping up to be one of the most hype events of the year, and the first major Ultra Street Fighter 4 tournament is going to be absolutely stacked with amazing players.

Hit the jump to check out Seth Killian's tweet.

f-ing awesome! even though I don't expect much from Nuki and Sako at this moment seeing that Nuki has only just put time in SF4 and Sako has been busy with his family.

Lets hope that the other great japanese players like Momochi and Fuudo etc are comming as well. Add the rest of the top of asia and top of Europe with it too and its gonna be the best evo ever :D

I expect Daigo and Tokido to make it far up the bracket, but honestly there are more than few players from each continent that have what it takes to go head-to-head (pause) with each one of these five players. Can't wait for Evo!

Before people ask things like "where's mago, fuudo" etc. "5 Gods" is a Vampire Savior thing. Nuki explained how each god came to be in a some older videos on youtube, but the original caption translations have since been changed by some troll. The 5 gods were basically chosen by japanese fanboys on online forums, nuki also said if there was a 6th god it would either be Mago or Kindevu.

As long as EVO keeps stacking certain brackets with all foreign players while keeping US players out of them, we may still yet have a shot.

Unlike the last 2 years where we saw Infiltration and Xian take EVO, I can't think of anyone who will be able to challenge the Japanese this year.

-Xiao Hai would have been a good bet, but with the slight Cammy nerfs who knows.

-Infiltration using Rolento, maybe?

My prediction is that Kazunoko will be the usf4 champion. That is, if he attends.

How? I was simply responding to someone who thought who are America's gods, I just named 5 awesome Us players, who share some similarities to their japanese counterparts. Also, insulting? Dude, Kbrad and Dieminion are great players in their own right. Sure they aren't as good as Sako or Nuki, but they are not that far off in which comparisons can't be made.

If i have to chose one non japanese player, i'll put a coin on Loufy, exept from that, let's be serious it's going to be a slaughter, it's not only about the 5 gods, there are tons of japanese players at the same godly level, Momochi, Uryo, Mago, Fuudo, Kazunoko, the Sagat army (Bonchan, super santarou from the ubiken crew, etc), the Jury army, etc.

I fear for Muricas butt.

#71
VelvetWonder said on May 16, 2014 at 2:38 p.m.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the whole thing nullified by Evo's FT3 formula ? Daigo, Mago, Fuudo, Haitani, Sako didn't even make it into top 3 in the past 2 years. Even worse: some of them got slaughtered before even getting into top 8.

Also, U.S isn't free at this particular event: Justin Wong (2nd in 2009), Ricky Ortiz (2nd in 2010), Latif (2nd in 2011), PrBalrog (? in 2012 and 4th in 2013). This is pretty much why Evo is so hype. There's no way you can tell who's gonna win the damn thing. NOBODY could've predicted Infiltration's rampage a couple years ago. The same can be said about Xian's performance last year.

#72
Gotomaster said on May 16, 2014 at 2:41 p.m.

Japan had a great EVO last year. Four of these guys placed in top 8! But people seem to forget that our boy PR Balrog placed higher than all of them except Tokido, who took 2nd. And the year before that, Daigo was the only Japanese player to get into top 8, whereas the US had PR Balrog and Dieminion.

For what it's worth, nobody outside of Asia and the US has placed in top 8 the past two years. I'm looking at you, Europe. ;)

Sure, I understand. You have to assume there were a few US players that could have made some noise but lost to Xian as well, though. EVO's a tough draw all around, which is why those top 8's are so impressive. You don't get there without beating some REALLY good players.
