Seth Killian no longer working for Sony Santa Monica

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • March 25, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. PDT

According to a source at Sony Santa Monica, Seth Killian is no longer working with Sony Computer Entertainment. Killian was brought on as lead game designer for PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, after leaving his role at Capcom in 2012.

Earlier today, Killian jumped on Twitter to confirm his departure, which took place in December of last year. Seth notes that Sony's indie titles have inspired him to go on and work on projects of his own.

The split was amicable, and Seth assures that we will soon see some of the games he's worked on at Sony Santa Monica. As for what lies ahead for Mr. Killian, we were only left with a brief, "stay tuned," teaser.

Hit the jump to check out Seth's tweets.

I hope he'll provide commentary at this year's EVO. He's one of the best commentators there are.

Good luck to him. :3

Inspired by indies eh? I wonder if Seth is planning to start up his own indy game studio or something. Regardless, I wish him the best of luck in whatever the future holds for him!

Considering the studio behind Sony Allstars nearly went under due to the poor sales of the game (not saying the game is bad, just saying it didn't sell to Sony's expectations), I'm not surprised. The company, SuperBot, is now indie and no longer works for Sony. I saw this coming, but it still sucks when the reality of it actually happens. Good luck to Seth and his future endeavors. We'll see what awaits S-Kill in the future.

Guys, choosing to leave does NOT mean he was fired. Stop reading between the lines. He quit to pursue his own ideas, he wasn't fired because of whatever BS you want to cook up.

I hope Santa Monica releases a new PSABR, it's a very fun game. But if he was responsible for the the killing system (which I doubt) they did good firing him or whom ever it was.

Street Fighter V? No thanks haha. I thought most people prefered a DS4 or SNK3 game? But yea, it sucks that Seth left Capcom. It was really unfortunate. Almost as unfortunate as the Cliff vs GOW incident :(

#21
SnakeX said on March 25, 2014 at 1:56 p.m.

While it's true that he's not going to go back to Capcom since there's no reason for him to do so, where do you get the idea that he's fed up with the FGC?
He still very regularly interacts with members of the community and occasionally comments on tournaments on twitter.

#25
Ojidan_Boy said on March 25, 2014 at 2:07 p.m.

But in all seriousness, it seems that capcom is working on a new fighting game (obviously not SF5).

When capcom's Kazunori Suguira says "I'm currently working on a fighting game" and with all of the other hints from capcom and Ono, it seems pretty clear.

#26
ryuhayabusa13 said on March 25, 2014 at 2:13 p.m.

Seth is still and will always be one of the best personalities of the FGC, hoping he gets to work on something awesome pretty soon. and See some of his new work and what he will be working on.

#27
TheTHCGamer said on March 25, 2014 at 2:15 p.m.

When it comes to doing PR for fighting games I'm pretty damn sure he's fed up with a lot of the negativity that comes with the games. Guess I should've said he loves the community but probably not when it comes to all the complaints he got bombarded with especially towards the end with CAPCOM. I don't know a community that complains like the FGC when it comes to games.

#28
ryuhayabusa13 said on March 25, 2014 at 2:17 p.m.

Doubt it, but No Ryuhayabusa, no deal (either way he was more xbox than ps). He was supposed to be in game and due to all the paperwork on dlc vs making him in game, it didn't go through.

If only it was easier to get this licencing stuff done. would have been a way better roster for the game and way better. No crash, no ryu, no Dart, lara, etc. Well no point on beating on dead horse. And back to topic.

#29
Cottoneyes said on March 25, 2014 at 2:17 p.m.

Honestly all stars wanted to be good, but the parent company kept giving them crap so they could barely do what they wanted with it and honestly the game is not that bad.

Hope things work out for the best for Seth.

#36
GodPride said on March 25, 2014 at 2:45 p.m.

I doubt Seth was responsible for the killing system. I don't think he even had much input for PSASBR. I remember watching a Ratchet walkthrough where Seth mentions off handily a feedback he gave to the team about Ratchet's Tesla Recoil trap lacking durability but was denied. In retrospect, he was obviously one of the more sensible member of the team.

#37
TrueGamingGuru said on March 25, 2014 at 2:49 p.m.

Will see what kind of indie title does Seth Killian, once the teaser gets revealed.

@Galletano & ReddChief

Chances of a new Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is possible, but it may take years until the development begins or if Sony ever considers of bringing their crossover fighter back for the next gen titles of the PS4/Vita. It could be Santa Monica Studios or someone else working on the sequel. Were going to end up waiting a couple of years (or more) until an announcement is ever made. I'd would at least hope the sequel can improve from the first game, without changing much about the mechanics.

(By the way Galletano it was already mention that he left on his own free will, he wasn't fired at all. Besides the Kill System was already set before Seth Killian join Santa Monica Studios)

#38
Existent said on March 25, 2014 at 2:50 p.m.

It has nothing to do with any communities. The FGC is laughable in scale compared to how many people knew who David Jaffe was and what he was responsible for.

I hear Sony Santa Monica got cut by Sony due to financial problems. A lot of ex Santa Monica employees are apparently being hired by Microsoft.

#42
TheTHCGamer said on March 25, 2014 at 3:02 p.m.

Yes it does part of the reason Seth got jobs with CAPCOM and Santa Monica studios was because he was well known in the FGC. If I'm developing or selling a fighting game it's always a good idea to promote my game and get feedback from someone who understands the community. Besides you don't even know if it's jaffe's choice to fall off the earth. People do get burned out and can come back after taking time away.

It sounds like this isn't the case for Seth so no I don't think he'll fall off the face of the earth lol.

Just imagine xian, Daigo, Infiltration, Justin Wong, PrBalrog vs The Legendary Seth Killian. It would be awesome to watch.

If Seth competes I hope Seth Killian VS Daigo in grand finals. Would be the best tournament grand finale ever existed on earth.

#44
TrueGamingGuru said on March 25, 2014 at 3:04 p.m.

By the way its not just licensing that is easier said than done, but the companies/IP holders/people themselves as well plus relationships.

Some of the companies/IP holders for certain characters were just a major pain to deal with these are reasons why Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Cloud etc. never got the chance to set foot. Especially Activision (Crash & Spyro) were nothing but a problem along with empty promises of these 2 characters having the chance to appear in PSASBR & the demands that Activision were asking were insane. Even people like Hideo Kojima was pretty picky when it comes to what characters were going to appear in the game, since Raiden already appear as a character and he didn't like the idea of both Snake & Raiden fighting each other. (although not much problem with Big Boss) But ever since Raiden got leaked the relationship was already damaged.

This is why characters like Big Daddy (2K Games), Heihachi Mishima (Bandai Namco), Dante (Capcom), and even Isaac (EA) ever got the chance. Since these Companies/IP holders were easy to work with (at least not much of a problem), weren't asking for a crazy demand, and have good relationship with Sony.

soggytoast said on March 25, 2014 at 3:05 p.m.

Jumping on for PSA:BR was clearly a mistake for Seth. He had a really great gig at Capcom and so far no one else IMO has done as much for the community as he did.

#46
Existent said on March 25, 2014 at 3:07 p.m.

We are not talking about fighting games. Fighting games have nothing to do with my point.

After God of War, David Jaffe was a much larger and more influental figure than Seth Killian. A few thousand people from a niche scene supporting him isn't going to influence jack sh*t unless it directly concerns fighting games.

#56
SnakeX said on March 25, 2014 at 3:56 p.m.

@llSilkCutll

Capcom knew Seth was important, that's why they wanted him to move up the business ladder. However, this required Seth having to move to Japan, and despite the opportunity he wasn't ready to ship out to an entirely new country and leave everything behind.
That was the original reason he left Capcom for Santa Monica Studios; he wanted to move beyond community manager, but couldn't in a company based in Japan. And now he seems to have other aspirations, thus moving on again.

Your on a fighting game site discussing the future of Seth Killian who has only worked on fighting games so far with his time in the gaming industry. David Jaffe is pretty much known for one game and honestly GOW is popular however most people who play the game don't know jack sh*t about him. The FGC not just people who play CAPCOM fighters know who Seth is. There's still a good chance Seth still wants to be involved with fighting games and he hasn't stated he wants to work on something besides fighting games.

The only reason David Jaffe is a more high profile person in the gaming industry is because he worked on a more high profile game. Your also comparing two people who were in different positions at there respective jobs. Mike Z well known in the FGC started working on an Indy fighting game and guess what being someone known in this tiny community allowed him to continue to support skullgirls. Once again I don't think any if us would be shocked if his next project directly concerns a fighting game.

#70
TheTHCGamer said on March 25, 2014 at 7:22 p.m.

Doubt it SF will always be CAPCOMs flagship fighting title and the MvC games are more popular then the CvS games. That doesn't mean however that I wouldn't want another CvS game and to be honest I'd prefer it over MvC. I'd love to get another CvS game but CAPCOM I'm sure are going to be smarter with how they invest there money especially after last gen. CAPCOM really screwed up in my opinion last gen with the exception if there fighting games but im not going into detail. Besides most if you know about all the bad new IP's and sequels released.

The other issue is CAPCOMs last vs (SFxT) game didn't do so well and disappointed a lot of people in a few ways. I'd love if CAPCOM would give it another chance though with a CvS sequel. I'd really like if they'd use a KOFXIII graphics style but I do understand that wouldn't be practical with how painstaking that art style is.

#71
Neoxon said on March 25, 2014 at 7:35 p.m.

Considering that he & Capcom are still on good terms, I'm sure they'd take him back. But the original reason he left Capcom was because he didn't want to move to Japan (which was part of a promotion he was going to get).

I'm also not going to assume he's not working on a FG based on his past track record and his ties with the FGC. In other words there's a higher percent chance that he's working on a fighting game then any other genre.

#91
Existent said on March 26, 2014 at 4:15 p.m.

He's been associated with non FG's. My point is that a niche community knowing his name is not a guarantee of success in whatever his next endeavor is.

Really how many non fighting games? He's pretty much been associated with fighting games for the most part people don't know the other genres he's been associated with. Nothing's guaranteed but my point is a much community very well could help with his success. This niche community has funded a lot of indie fighting games and continues too. I can almost guarantee you Seth would get support from this community if he did decided to make an indie fighter.
