'Guile is a normal average set character put in for Americans to use' Street Fighter 2's design docs & more examined by Did You Know Gaming

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • March 22, 2014 at 3:54 p.m. PDT

The Street Fighter series is heavily influenced by martial artists from around the globe — some real and some fictional — and Did You Know Gaming's latest video walks you through some of the more infamous inspirations the franchise used.

They also take a look back at some of Street Fighter 2's design documents, showing a few of the alternative looks the fighters sported, before they became the people we all know so very well.

One of the more interesting factoids comes from Guile's design doc stating that he is a normal average set character "put in for Americans to use."

The whole 7 minute clip is narrated by Maximilian, and also examines some of the history of the games themselves.

Hit the jump to view the video.

Well, I guess this explains why Guile gets no love from Capcom.

Guile's theme is still the theme of America.

As a Mexican it was very frustrating to wait decades in order to play the game until El Fuerte was added. Hawk and Juli aren't really Mexicans, so it couldn't work for me no matter how hard I tried. BibleThump

#34
RonnieTheClownPrince said on March 22, 2014 at 9:56 p.m.

No, it's true that Juli isn't Mexican (she's German), but T.Hawk is Mexican. He might be a strange choice for the first ever representative of the country, since he's also a Native American, but he's still Mexican. Do note that the "American" part of Native American refers to the continent and not the country, and Native Americans roamed freely throughout North America before the Europeans came and added in borders separating Canada and Mexico from the United States.

Ignoring the fact that Capcom made T. Hawk a walking stereotype of Native Americans in general, it's likely that T. Hawk's tribe is from somewhere in Northern Mexico.

On the subject of Juli, she was the daughter of a German doctor that was helping out a nearby village or something like that. However, there is a Mexican doll that's from T. Hawk's village named Noembelu, though she's never been playable in any game.

Bring back the Ugandan or add some original African characters. Africa's been largely ignored by Street Fighter.

Cool vid. Will all you kids stop putting "Bible Thump" at the end of your comments. It makes no sense on a fighting game website and it's annoying.

It's a good thing Capcom doesn't show any racism by their character choice.

They forgot that Bison is also a 100% copy/paste of Washizuka from the Riki-Oh manga. One of his portraits is directly lifted from a panel in the comic. Though I guess it's possible Washizuka was also based on that movie guy with the name I've already forgotten.

#54
old_school_rival said on March 24, 2014 at 9:10 a.m.

It doesn't matter in comparison to what food poverty, world peace, because it does to some individuals who play fighting games. Twenty Five percent of the countries in the world are African yet a Global world warrior tournament has only one of over 50 representatives from an African country. Like I said Africa's been mostly ignored by Street Fighter arguing that other Fighting Games don't have African characters doesn't make it any justifiable.
