Hype Street Fighter X Tekken matches from Final Round 17 with pandora finishes feat. Infiltration, Kelvin Jeon and Cool Kid93

Posted by Jonathan 'Catalyst' Grey • March 19, 2014 at 8:06 p.m. PDT

Hype and Street Fighter X Tekken are unfortunately two words you don't see mentioned together often in the FGC at large, but some terrific sets went down this past weekend at Final Round 17 between Infiltration, Cool Kid 93 and Kelvin Jeon, among others.

Even if you're not a fan of SFxT, these sets are highly entertaining, as they feature some of the best players in this title on the planet facing each other.

There's even a few awesome pandora finishes included for good measure. Hit the jump to check them out.

You can find the complete rundown of matches on FunkyP's YouTube page. Submitted by Julio_Anima.

Alot of us hate this game. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad fighting game. But the DLC and losing half your matches by Timeout is why I don't touch this game anymore.

I got my 1000/1000 achievements and bounced.

Glad it was good at Final Round though.

What do DLCs have to do with gameplay

sarif2soon said on March 19, 2014 at 8:35 p.m.

"Hype" and "SFxT" in one sentence? How is that possible? Kappa

BlackOnyxThunder said on March 19, 2014 at 8:37 p.m.

Lol. There is alot of truth to your comment.

TrainTrackJack said on March 19, 2014 at 8:39 p.m.

At this level, TxSf is fun to watch, idk much about the mechanics of the game but i enjoyed myself. These videos undermine the comment "TxSF is boring to spectate" i thoroughly enjoyed it to the point i'm thinkin about picking up a copy myself and of course spending a few hours in the lab.

sarif2soon said on March 19, 2014 at 8:52 p.m.

That actually got me hype O.O

Madenka said on March 19, 2014 at 9:02 p.m.

I like this game too and it's fun to pull out sometimes, especially with the sfxt characters coming to SFIV.

OhYouDontSayThat said on March 19, 2014 at 9:03 p.m.

lol no. out of the 3 videos not a single match ended in a time over. so if by "alot (no space) of truth" you mean "a lot of personal opinions" then yeah, sure.

djm0001 said on March 19, 2014 at 9:14 p.m.

That page, translated into English via chrome is great...the character bio's are pretty funny.

Ken's Special Skill: Pasta
Ryu's Special Skill: Anywhere is sleeping, hitchhike
Evil Ryu's Special Skill: I dodge bullets flying

SFxT was Hype at final round last year too. It's becoming a tradition

OnlineRon91 said on March 19, 2014 at 9:15 p.m.

Word this was hype

The_Big_Boss said on March 19, 2014 at 9:25 p.m.

If your matches end in a timeout then that is your fault. Once you learn the mechanics you should be doing 400-500 easy from one touch.

Classic FGC though. Hate something you don't understand. Disc Locked Content was to keep the game from having those long load times like in SF4 when you don't have those costumes.

I just find it funny that people talk down on SFxT about $20 characters (12 of them at that) and USF4 you're paying $15 for 5 "NEW" characters and "NEW" stages. Go figure.

Aluppoj said on March 19, 2014 at 9:26 p.m.

Yeah, I submitted that a while ago as well. Idk why they haven't run with it yet. It'll probably be good for 1,000 comment debate.

And another article that can be a 'who do you want?' Wish list.

Tomorrow will be busy if they post the story.

Eternal said on March 19, 2014 at 9:32 p.m.

Man... Cody does such low damage outside of the corner in SFxT. Glad to see CoolKid93 makes him work, first time Cody won a major in a game since 2010 lol

Xykes said on March 19, 2014 at 9:33 p.m.

The ending of grand finals is the type of thing that will haunt you forever.

Izick said on March 19, 2014 at 9:43 p.m.

This is how sfxt truly played! This game has more Depth than people think and the way that you can express your style in this game is amazing. if this top 8 was at Evo sfxt would have exploded.

JusticeSoulTuna said on March 19, 2014 at 9:46 p.m.

Pandora sucks

D2Or said on March 19, 2014 at 9:47 p.m.

I initially hated this game when it came out. Time outs, broken gems, disc-locked content, infinite re-stand combos, etc. But when the latest version was released, I gave it a second chance and it became one of my favorite fighters. Unfortunate more people don't play. Watching these SFxT matches at Final Round makes me want to start playing again. Hype sets; Congratz to Cool Kid. He definitely deserved it.

Zanpakto said on March 19, 2014 at 9:49 p.m.

I feel like tiers doesn't matter as much in this game, this and Cup had a great top 8 character variety. Anyways this the Best top 8 i've seen for sfxt really shows how the game should be played.

Catalyst said on March 19, 2014 at 9:49 p.m.

Unfortunately, this is fairly par for the course for Capcom as far as having extra character slots on some of their pages.

In most cases, this hasn't meant anything.

Capcom has said a few times, I believe, that they're only adding 5 characters to USF4.

The Cross Tekken finals were extremely hype and fun to watch, and I hate this game. You know a match is entertaining when the players can pull up a show even though the commentators are ass.

Really good stuff, and congratulations to Cool Kid for winning the whole thing, and congratulations to all the others, really, the matches were amazing.

(said match at 3 hrs 14 mins in)

dvanston said on March 19, 2014 at 11:47 p.m.

Grand Finals really impressed me. Cool Kid had an excellent opportunistic/ defensive style with scary good reads and his neutral game was incredible. Kelvin made very good tactical decisions and had an impressive rushdown. I had no idea this game could be this fun to watch, great find/article @Catalyst

I facepalm every time I see people complain about timeout, because that hasn't been an issue for a LONG time, ever since the patch came out AND people started to optimize their combos.

Aqua said on March 20, 2014 at 3:14 a.m.

whether it's hype or not depends on you I suppose.

Skaz9000 said on March 20, 2014 at 3:49 a.m.

How I love this game. Yup ... this has inspired me to pop in SFxT for another go. Maybe ... MAYBE it can make a small return. There's still plenty of time before TxSF comes out for it to do so.

Super_Honda said on March 20, 2014 at 5:26 a.m.

Great matches. Even though Infiltration is not 1 of my favourite players, I appreciate that he’s 1 of the top players that continues to play SFxT. But I would like to see more popular players competing in SFxT tournaments and that’ll make SFxT even more interesting. Kelvin Jeon played really well as well: making good use of Kazuya’s EWGF and delivering great combos too. In fact, he would risk Yoshimitsu taking damage in order to tag Kazuya in. But the final round in grand finals was classic SFxT: you make 1 mistake and its game over. Congrats to Cool Kid93 for taking it.

As for possible 3 new characters for USF4, I looked at the Capcom’s Japan site and I can see there are 3 slots that could be filled in. However, if that was the case, then Capcom would’ve mentioned about that a long time ago. In fact, people should be satisfied with 5 characters if people want to forget that SFxT had existed. But really, there’s only 1 new character made for USF4 and that caused a huge stir in FGC. People should remember that it wasn’t Capcom’s intention to make USF4 in the first place since they invested all that money on SFxT. History tells us that Capcom was originally done with SF4 series in 2011 and they moved on SFxT, but that plan wasn’t successful so USF4 was announced due to FGC’s demands.

Some would like Marvel to die, but it isn't happening anytime soon. Solution; if you don't like a certain game, remove it from your news feed/don't watch the streams and videos.

and @everyone else still commenting on how they dislike or don't care about SFxT

kaeshi said on March 20, 2014 at 6:35 a.m.

the most offputting thing for me about this game is simply the graphics. I cant stand all the dodgy glows and weird color palettes people can choose. If it looked more like ssf4 i would have given it a better chance.

KataM said on March 20, 2014 at 7:37 a.m.

SFxT is hype except when you play it as if it was SFIV. Players who were able to win with their good SFIV fundamentals are those that have obstructed SFxT's progress as a game.

krls said on March 20, 2014 at 7:44 a.m.

that was pretty hype

seph13 said on March 20, 2014 at 9:01 a.m.

This game became garbage after the balance patch and it's popularity dropped like a stone. I use to love this game and would play almost everyday. Now it's just about footsies into juggles. Zoning was made entirely useless as was a whole range of interesting tactics. Even the amount of viable characters was better pre balance. Now every match is Jin, kaz, hworang, Nina or some other footsie into dial-up combo Tekken character except the occasional Chun (or rare Cody I guess). All the balance patch did was get people that already hated/dropped the game to proclaim that it's now balanced because it's footsie based and still not play the game while at the same time made half the crowd that loved the original version drop the game.

Spaghetti_Time said on March 20, 2014 at 9:35 a.m.

And cross tekken still sucks

Xykes said on March 20, 2014 at 10:10 a.m.

Not really.

There's no difference in terms of the work they had to do to create the content or the benefit you receive when paying for the content. And, these are the only things that really matter.

Evilhero said on March 20, 2014 at 10:29 a.m.

Did you look at the top 8 for FR17? Not a single Hworang, Chun or Nina. The only Jin player is regarded as one of the best in the world and still only got third and one player picked Kazuya (a character that requires really good execution to play effectively.) The vast majority of the top 8 had Street Fighter characters. The character diversity has been extremely high.

I don't see the issue with dial-up combos, they still require you to land a hit, the execution is just a bit easier in the beginning and in exchange, they do less damage. All Marvel is is mix ups into juggles. As for zoning, it may not be as important as other games, but if you get caught jumping in, you get blown up. Also, zoning grapplers out is still a good strategy.

You sound like everyone else, picking out things that aren't becoming issues anymore (which really weren't issues in the first place.) And ignoring how the game and players are changing.

mrambitious said on March 20, 2014 at 10:37 a.m.

Im going to ignore all the SFxT hate.

Thecoolkid93 is an online warrior who to my knowledge has not attended very many big tourneys. I saw in a previous thread about final round that he said he was trying to attend. In that same thread people ripped him up for being an online warrior who thinks hes on the level of a "legit pro". Well all you eventhubs trolls, cool kid93 owned infiltration. And all the while pulling off combos ive never seen and i watch his match replays VERY often. This is proof that the high ranking online warriors can absolutely compete with the pros and NEED to attend more tourneys. Get rid of the 99% stale top tier whores that make up every tournament and get some people with legit CHARACTER KNOWLEDGE into these events. The announcers say it so many times, cool kids knowledge of the characters he used and faced was significantly better than everyone else, most likely because infiltration and Kelvin usually face other "pros" and less time in the randomness of ranked match.

Dont have time to look ot up, but back when sfxt was pretty new, i met a guy online in PSAS forums named the cool kid who was mad good at PSAS and said he played sf4 n stuff too. Anyway he asked people for suggestions on a new fighter. I told him to try injustice and sfxt and he said he would. If this is the same cool kid I take all credit for his success lol.

BlankaBeast said on March 20, 2014 at 11:37 a.m.

SFXT is so much fun.

Let's face it, even if it is a great game, not enough people are realizing that.

So sad to see it not at CEO or EVO.

1ButtonDash said on March 20, 2014 at 12:11 p.m.

at least you backed up your comment with a well described reason as to why. Do tell, how does is it feel being a number in a herd of sheep?

Freyzii said on March 20, 2014 at 1:10 p.m.

Personally think these grand finals were so hype because Infiltration was not in there. I HATE when Infiltration plays SFxT cause he plays it so safe, so boring, so slow, especially when he was using Rolento, time outs everywhere. But Kelvin and cool-kid, these two are heavy hitters known for their skill in this game.

Owlflame said on March 20, 2014 at 3:54 p.m.

LoL. I saw "Hype" and "X Tekken" In the same article typo and I just thought of the word "Oxymoron"

kingmedicine said on March 20, 2014 at 6:36 p.m.

I really wanna get back into this game. I never got what the problem was with it. I regret not watching the cross tekken stream from final round after watching these replays

bunny said on March 20, 2014 at 9:41 p.m.

really entertaining sets it keeps getting better and better.

Jaaj301 said on March 21, 2014 at 1:58 a.m.

It's not a matter of damage, it's a matter of finding the openings to do damage.

It's too hard to break the opponent's defense in this game, unless you have an unreactable overhead that takes half of your opponent's life away / your opponent likes to press buttons.

The game lacks a good rock-paper-scissors system, something all fighting games should have. The very concept of mixup is very situational and character dependant, and you can't rely on tick-throw setups because of the nerfed walkspeed, throw range and overall usefulness.

The flow of the neutral game also feels very clunky and slow, much more than in SF4. I never had a problem with disc-locked dlc, the game is just very badly designed imo.

NoizyChild said on March 21, 2014 at 7:40 a.m.

I wanna get back into SFxT as well. Unfortunately, the only people playing now are either really bad or really good. There's no middle ground.

handsofgod said on March 21, 2014 at 9:06 a.m.

These matches were really good!!!! Grand finals last round last hit and he dropped it looool I hate that sh!t loooool that's gonna hurt him for a little while... Kelvin could of taking it same thing happened to infiltration when playing sethlol last time inf could of went into a double team super thing and would of probably won but he opted to do a tag combo and then lost... This game can play out so quick I simple slip up can cost everything.... Was really hype watching it wish I watched it live or different know the results lol great stuff

roknin said on March 21, 2014 at 12:16 p.m.

"Zoning was made entirely useless as was a whole range of interesting tactics."

Play a good (and I mean ACTUALLY good) zoning Alisa, Juri, Sim, Akuma, Jack-X, Raven or Guile... then come back and try to make that same statement.

Especially Jack-X and Raven.

Zoning can be outright silly in this game. And there's still a ton of "interesting tactics" that are used in this game, and have yet to be fully explored.

roknin said on March 21, 2014 at 12:21 p.m.

Infiltration can lame you out... or mix you up twice and destroy you in like 10 seconds. His Jin Alisa team does Donkey Kong damage in every confirm.

roknin said on March 21, 2014 at 12:25 p.m.

Dude, just do it! :p

Online there's a few "bad" players out there, but for the most part there's mostly strong players. Offline, every tourney is filled with killers, but IMO this is a good thing and most (if not all) of the players are more than happy to help someone learn and level up. :-)

EDIT: aaaaaaand that's the end of my mass replying for today, lol

DarkosStrife said on March 22, 2014 at 7:38 a.m.
