Updated: Edition select will not work in ranked, offline-only; Capcom reveals USF4 option that lets you select characters from past versions

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • March 3, 2014 at 8:28 a.m. PST

Updated: Capcom's latest Saikyo Blog has confirmed that the edition select option will be an offline-only function. It specifically mentions that players will not be able to take part in ranked matches, or other online versus modes using characters from the past.

Earlier: It was revealed at SoCal Regionals 2014 that a new option will be available to players in Ultra Street Fighter 4. Players are given the choice to choose what version of their favorite characters they want to play.

This newly unveiled option will bring back powerful versions of characters such as Vanilla Sagat, Arcade Edition Yun, and more. All characters from each version of Street Fighter 4 can be selected. The different versions are as follows:

• Street Fighter 4
• Super Street Fighter 4
• Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition
• Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012
• Ultra Street Fighter 4

Hit the jump to check out the brand new trailer.

Wonder if tourneys will allow any version select or just USF4. Throwback tourneys will be interesting, especially with infinites finding their way back possibly.

i'm hoping this is only available as a treat like gill in 3s online edition and isn't normally select-able online. I can't see this ending well like it did in super turbo( which honestly didn't end that well.)

#13
AugustAPC said on March 2, 2014 at 7:20 p.m.

I don't even know what to say. I'm kinda in shock here.

My first thought is whether or not this a separate mode from the standard. I mean it has to be, right? Kinda defeats the point of rebalancing. I mean there are plenty of characters that are just flat out better in some versions. They have to separate this. There's gotta be an "only ultra" option, both offline and online.
As long as they do that, I'm down.

#27
caruga said on March 2, 2014 at 7:28 p.m.

Hahaha.

Don't you see? You now have 4 counter pick versions of your main character. I can only see this solving more problems than it creates.

The game now essentially has 216 characters.

All in all,the definitive version of SFIV is approaching.....

#31
H3ARTZ said on March 2, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

Two Questions

1. Will it be tournament legal?
2. Do you want it to be?

#32
caruga said on March 2, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

Only problem is that vanilla characters did way more damage and had more health, making them dominant in most cases... wonder if they'll counterbalance that somehow.

#33
Anon said on March 2, 2014 at 7:31 p.m.

woot! i knew they would do this eventually. just like with Hyper Street Fighter II - The Anniversary Edition where you could choose which version of the sf2 character you wanted to play.

#34
Darkspines22 said on March 2, 2014 at 7:31 p.m.

I don't really agree with this decision. I like the idea, but if people select only Arcade Edition Yun and Vanilla Sagat, then I'm out.

#35
HooliganComboFTW said on March 2, 2014 at 7:31 p.m.

This is a good thing. More options is always good. For the casual audience which is what Capcom always primarily targets. For the fgc....yeah not so much. Now competitive play seems to become a mess now.

#37
IcyKnee said on March 2, 2014 at 7:32 p.m.

I hope it's a separate mode. Why balance it otherwise? It is a really neat idea though...as long as it's its own mode.

#38
Drifter said on March 2, 2014 at 7:33 p.m.

Super El Fuerte > ALL. Be prepared to get butt whooped with invincible tortilla and an overpowered U2!

#39
H3ARTZ said on March 2, 2014 at 7:33 p.m.

Maybe more health for balance.
They only have access to only one Ultra though but will it be enough?

#40
AugustAPC said on March 2, 2014 at 7:33 p.m.

The more I think about it... the more I think that this HAS to be a separate mode. Why would anyone use the nerfed Ultra renditions of characters like Cammy?

It's gotta be a separate option... this just defeats so many aspects of the game. The universal nerfs we've seen in the different iterations of this game totally trivialize balancing. Uppercut nerfs weren't really nerfs in Super because everyone got them.

Blah, I'm just mind-f*cked right now. Just PLEASE Capcom, make this optional.

#41
ZaFuuru said on March 2, 2014 at 7:34 p.m.

This is SUPER LAME

Now you have to remember frame data of 5 versions of the game. Not even a machine can do that, the game becomes totally random. Can I punish this? Can I punish that? This mode is only good for casuals

Each character will have a definitive version for sure, but does any of them fall under AE 2012? I feel that that will be the absolute least picked edition overall.

#55
nusense said on March 2, 2014 at 7:39 p.m.

You think this caters to the casual audience? LOL.... they don't even know the difference between the version of the character, let a lone frame data. Ya i doubt any TO going to run this as the main sf4 game. ULTRA lock character will be the norm.

#56
AceDuo said on March 2, 2014 at 7:40 p.m.

JayRich said on March 2, 2014 at 7:47 p.m.

Combofiend, I know you read this stuff, so please consider the following:

If someone picks a vanilla character, please give them the old HUD bars. Let them do the after KO disrespect hit that was in vanilla and BRING BACK THE OLD ANNOUNCER! Or make that selectable in the options.

If Vanilla characters can't use Ultra II does that mean pre Ultra characters can't use delayed wake-up and red focus? I hope this is the case.

I also wonder how unblockables will function...

At any rate, GGs Capcom, you have made me hype.

BakaRoboto said on March 2, 2014 at 7:53 p.m.

wheeewww... that's crazy as balls. Depending on how this is implemented, I don't know why you'd go through the trouble of doing new rebalances for all the characters for Ultra, when you're gonna throw all the past versions in there to use. and what about characters that weren't in all versions? the new characters especially. are they going to have only one version each?

it's just.. wow. it's scary. it needs more elaboration on Capcom's part.

It's not 100% bad I guess but it's such large amount of variables to process that it makes you pull on your shirt collar and go "EEEUUUUGGHH?"

You guys realize there's no way this is a tournament thing. As far as tournament standard. Sure there are gonna be side tournies and whatnot but for the most part this is just another game mode to play around with, and for that reason, this is awesome.

#85
AugustAPC said on March 2, 2014 at 7:55 p.m.

I caught that. He didn't explicitly state that it was another mode, unless I missed something.

He was responding to J. Chen's question, "So this mode will be available at release?"

He said something like, "Yup, edition select will be all packaged up."

#86
Gotomaster said on March 2, 2014 at 7:57 p.m.

Dude, Oni is trash compared to them.

#87
HooliganComboFTW said on March 2, 2014 at 7:57 p.m.

From face value yes they will like it because they won't care about balance/frame data. All they would see is "more customization options= more fun time."

About the Ultra "lock" thing, we don't even know if this is a separate mode or not. If a separate mode then all this worrying is for not and will be ignored like Team Battles. If it's integrated with the character selection in general (somewhere with picking your ultra/health/color/taunt) then it becomes a larger issue (hyper SFII Anniversary had the same thing) for online and possibly tourney play. Then it would either decide between purely ultra incarnation or filter out what is considered the "OP" incarnations of x character.

#88
SpadeHand said on March 2, 2014 at 7:59 p.m.

Uh, no, this is a bad idea. Like, the worst possible idea.

#89
cris25 said on March 2, 2014 at 8 p.m.

When you think they cannot make it worse...

This should be an offline versus mode only.
IF they let you play this online, (and that is a terrible idea), AT LEAST it should warn to the opponent which version you picked. Some moves can be punished in one version but not the other.

#93
oghaggard said on March 2, 2014 at 8:03 p.m.

It's 100% obvious after five seconds of thought that this is a SEPARATE MODE. There is no way that they would rebalance the game only to force players to be subjected to "unbalanced" versions of the characters when playing others online.

This is just a fun little 'dream match' mode.

#94
Kongk4 said on March 2, 2014 at 8:04 p.m.

#96
Clamper said on March 2, 2014 at 8:04 p.m.

Can someone confirm it this is a separated mode? If this is in the main versus mode it'll be an epic failure.

#97
NvhA said on March 2, 2014 at 8:05 p.m.

I wonder what will be the implication on online mode when this comes out. I hope they limit the choice to playing with Ultra or mixed version only, not specific single version filter (like Vanilla only, Super only, etc) except ultra. Otherwise that would be one giant clusterfck.

On another note, I hope tournament standard remains Ultra only.

I'm happy I can still play AE Vanilla Yun or AE2012 Seth but I'm going to move on and try to adapt with Ultra version. No point staying in the past.

#98
AugustAPC said on March 2, 2014 at 8:05 p.m.

I truly believe it's a separate mode, and if it is... then there's no reason to fret. But if Capcom completely f*cks this up and makes this standard, then yes, online will be the biggest mess ever. Everyone will pick the definitive versions of each character and if they're from different editions of the game, then the balancing standards will be way off, resulting in ridiculously bad match-ups.

Capcom can't be dumb enough to make this the standard. It will likely be a new mode for fun, like teams and tournament.

samuraix025 said on March 2, 2014 at 8:05 p.m.
