Ed Boon hints at Raiden being playable in Mortal Kombat X, discusses character variations in new interview

Posted by Steven 'Dreamking23' Chavez • June 18, 2014 at 4:01 p.m. PDT

NetherRealm Studios' own Ed Boon recently discussed their upcoming next-gen title, Mortal Kombat X, with Machinima.

When speaking on the subject of MKX's character variations, a new mechanic to the Mortal Kombat universe, Boon explains how this fresh facet will affect match-ups and the way the game is played. Things get even more interesting when Raiden's name is used as an example.

"Sub-Zero - A is a good match up for Scorpion - C, which is a good match up for Raiden or somebody - B," Boon explains. The thunder god has not yet been revealed as playable in Mortal Kombat X, but perhaps Ed is alluding to an upcoming character reveal here.

Thought the title meant Metal Gear Raiden for a sec, hahah.

That's like being surprised about Ryu or Chun-Li being in SF5.

Who DIDN'T expect Raiden to show up?

I love the concept of the three variations.
NRS you have quite the task ahead of you guys in terms for balancing, but i have faith it you guys :D

I love ed boon.
Hope this game is extremely successful, although despite their best intentions it is inevitable that most characters will have a best version.

It wouldn't be MK without him

I see Ed Boon has been paying attention to the FGC obviously the 3 variations are more gear towards competitive play

Not Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but he comes in Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

How would adding more variation to the metagame help balance? Wouldn't that make balancing even harder?

Ono hinted at Ryu being playable in SF5.

Well it'll be cool to counter pick with your own character.

That's probably what I most excited for. The ability to choose the different character variants.

That and that it seems like there's going to be like a half and half mix of old and new characters.

To be fair you would expect Liu Kang the main protagonist and EarthRealm savior to be an auto-default choice for every MK title but look how that turned out.

Raiden had an excellent chance to come back though since he was the central character during MK9.

#12
NoizyChild said on June 18, 2014 at 4:26 p.m.

That's the equivalent of what Capcom did with SF3. If they wouldn't have included Ryu and Ken, fans would've had a fit.

As you can see, they hurried up and brought Liu Kang back.

Raiden was so important in MK9, I cannot see him not making a comeback in MK X, one way or another (Evil Raiden).

Who cares about balance. Make a game with limitless characters ala "LoL" (scared to spell it out on here) and let the game fix itself.

throw in a patch or two for kicks and giggles.

Give me a marvel game with a LoL/Killer instint microtranny bidness plan. and I will give my money.

Or DC Im not picky. Injustice 2???? the never ending free to play? anyone?

I can dream eh

Whoa, whoa, hold on a second here. You honestly expect me to believe that perhaps the most important character in all of Mortal Kombat, who is also one of the few good guys to survive, is going to be in MKX? Get real, jeez. What's next, Ryu in Street Fighter V?

MuMuGuy said on June 18, 2014 at 5:23 p.m.

Carlos Pesina (Raiden's actor in MK1 and 2) and his brother Daniel (Cage's and the ninjas' actor in MK1 and 2) worked with Data East on Tattoo Assassins. Midway omitted Raiden in MK3 and UMK3 as a form of punishment against Carlos for his participation in Tattoo Assassins.

SJFox said on June 18, 2014 at 5:58 p.m.

The one and only character that's been in every main MK game is sub-zero. Even Scorpion missed one game. This is despite Scorpion being Ed Boon's favorite character.

He can honestly slip the carpet from under any character. Any character but Sub-zero of course.

Metaru_Sukotto said on June 18, 2014 at 5:58 p.m.

Considering how the story of MK9 turned, guess it's only a matter of time until we can see what's become of him in X, both in terms of character development and gameplay.

SendTriumph2Evo said on June 18, 2014 at 6:22 p.m.

GOODNESS! When will they learn? They've been doing this since 3. Everytime they release an MK without Raiden as an unplayable character [or even hint that he wont be] there's huge uproar and protest and they finally add him in some remake or dlc. I think its intentional marketing ploys at this point. It's as given as streetfighter dropping 3-5 versions.

#27
SendTriumph2Evo said on June 18, 2014 at 6:24 p.m.

aaaaaaaaand then they added her....

#28
SendTriumph2Evo said on June 18, 2014 at 6:26 p.m.

typical of fighting games this generation. drop the game, then raiden will be included in the 2nd or third release/patch/dlc package....

I don't think Liu Kang was playable in MK: Deadly Alliance, though, I sure hope we get Johnny Cage and not just his daughter :/

There will inevitably be an optimal setup for each characters as with every fighting game.

cagedphoenix said on June 18, 2014 at 7:32 p.m.

don't think scorpion's spear/snakes<---(movie) hit threw sub-zero's ice counter/shield/clone, I think it should freeze scorpion or at least counter each other out... I also think scorpions spear's shouldn't hit sub-zero during his ice slide attack, and how scorpion's hellfire can catch up with sub-zero during his ice-slide attack! and jus plain ole don't like his ice mask(looks like someone colored bright blue on it) or his new giant ice hammer move... I'm not the biggest fan of his x-ray either, I think it would be sweet if he like froze the ground all the way to his opponent feet and jus whaled on them with like ice gloves or something for an X-ray, its cool that it's a counter but he has more than enough counters

#32
NoizyChild said on June 18, 2014 at 7:33 p.m.

No, he wasn't. But then he showed right back up in Deception, albeit as a zombie.

There are a few characters that a fighting game must always bring back into the sequels. Raiden is one of those characters.

Fill me in, how many characters survived MK9? Also, wasn't Sub-Zero a cyborg last we saw of him? Are we on Sub-Zero the Third now?

#37
Kawalorn said on June 19, 2014 at 2:18 a.m.

From what I remember, from the good guys it was only Raiden, Sonya and Cage that survived. Well Scorpion is still "alive" in his whole undeadiness. Not really sure about the bad guys. I don't think any of them died besides Shao Khan and Shang Tsung.

HOWEVER Mortal Kombat is notorious for reviving dead characters just like that. Also reviving dead Sub-Zero could possibly give him his body back.

LongLiveI7 said on June 19, 2014 at 3:36 a.m.

If liu kang is still alive and just disfigured, doesn't that mean he shouldn't age due to him still being champion of mk. Would love to see him play an anti type role and becoming Raiden rival.

And he was an unlockables character, completely uninvolved in the story if remember correctly. But yes, he was a secret playable character.
