Kirby and Pit are top-tier, followed by Villager, Zero Suit Samus, Mario and Wii Fit Trainer; early tiers based on Super Smash Bros. E3 invitationals

Posted by Cheng Kai 'KarbyP' Sim • June 11, 2014 at 8:15 a.m. PDT

Kirby and Pit are currently Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS's (also known simply as "Smash 4") top-tier characters, with Villager, Zero Suit Samus, Mario and Wii Fit Trainer following closely behind, a rather detailed impressions post over at Smash Bros. competitive community site Melee It On Me speculates.

The tier impressions are based on what's playable and shown over at Nintendo's E3 invitational tournament, so these are early tiers information at best, and are highly susceptible to change. This isn't even the final build of the game.

Still, the list is fairly interesting, especially if you were one of those players who thought about maining Little Mac after watching him beast in the character reveal trailer.

Top Tier
- Kirby
- Pit

High Tier
- Villager
- Zero Suit Samus
- Mario
- Wii Fit Trainer

Mid Tier
- Pikachu
- Sonic
- Fox
- Marth
- Greninja

Low Tier
- Bowser
- Zelda

Bottom Tier
- Little Mac (for FFA, TERRIBLE). Might be god-like on FD
- Bowser (DJN’s opinion)

???
- Olimar
- Rosalina
- Donkey Kong
- Link

Apart from this early tiers list, Melee It On Me's E3 invitationals impression post also contains plenty of detailed notes on whether or not specific pieces of tech from older Smash Bros. games are making a return in Smash 4, as well as brief thoughts on Mario, Fox and Marth.

Head over to their site here to check out all the good stuff -- there's even some heavy discussion on the game's early impressions in the comments.

What? Little Mac low tier? HOW DOES THAT WORK?! It must be stage match-ups that affect his tier.

Even if Mac is considered low tier in the final game, I'll find a way to make him work.

Kirby is finally considered Top tier, for the time being.... At least no more "Hiyayaya!" from Pit lol

Wow...E3 tiers?? Really?? Impressive.

Bean and rice are top tiers...Meat is low tier...Ridiculous.

The smash community and tier lists go together like peanut butter and jelly. Not surprised in the least that there would already be a list out.

Been a long time since Kirby was the boss...

I think Mac will be a solid character. In a 1v1 fight I think he can be a powerhouse. We'll see when the game comes out.

LeonHartEX said on June 11, 2014 at 8:28 a.m.

This is ridiculous from the start; the game hasn't even come out yet a tier list has been made. Unreal...

Last time I checked and despite not winning, Mac was doing major damage KO'ing nearly everyone on last night's stream.

Little Mac MUST be grounded to be proven really dangerous. Sakurai stated that he gets weaker and vulnerable when in the air. Plus he has horrible recovery. Kinda like Iron Fist in Marvel.

On a flat stage where little to no platform exist, Mac can be a true terror. And yeah, his power is legit...

KarbyP said on June 11, 2014 at 8:33 a.m.

Kirby was top-tier in Smash 1 I think.

Doopliss said on June 11, 2014 at 8:40 a.m.

I trust Sakurai more when it comes to tier discussion at this time, so I guess Samus is the best character right now.

Yea, Kirby was top-tier in Smash 64. You're right.

Where's Palutena in the list?
What's that? The game hasn't come out yet so this is pointless?
Alrighty then.

Not much changed with Kirby except his final smash (which most likely won't even be used in tournament) and only performed well in 4p free for alls. Once put 1v1 he was got bodied free (tho hungrybox did get lamed out at the end when he finally caught on to zero suits pattern). Once ppl get their hands on the game and start truly finding sh!t kirby will fall back to being @$$ tier. To even put kirby up top but blatantly ignore the potential of greninja and lil mac is B.S. enough. Then theres the fact that fox still exists.

Wow, a tier-list for a game that hasn't even been released yet.

Aren't we being at least a little bit preemptive?

I like how despite the fact that Sakurai blatantly said that Samus has been deemed the most powerful in testing, she isn't even under the "???" section.

This list is silly.

I usually like tier lists, but I think this is downright stupid tough.

I watched the matches too, and obviously there are characters that seemed to be pretty strong already (Kirby, Fox, Olimar and ZSS) mainly due to good juggle follow ups and mobility, but a tier list ? Please.

Also yep, Sakurai did mention that Samus was internally considered the best character. I wish someone had picked her during these matches.

#22
shumathorath said on June 11, 2014 at 9:37 a.m.

yo e3 tier list how do you make a tier list with so many characters missing, ignoring the invitational my favorite character is ZSS and i want to main bowser.

This is the dumbest. Tier list but the game is months from release.

#24
GreenWithEnvy said on June 11, 2014 at 9:47 a.m.

so they're trying to forge tiers out of the first matches recorded of this game, from FFA matches played by mostly nobodies + 1 or 2 renown smash players?

AlexTwo said on June 11, 2014 at 10:06 a.m.

Yup. Welcome to the FGC, where most people put more emphasis on tiers than they do actual skill.

SrAbuguet said on June 11, 2014 at 10:09 a.m.

The final match let me very confused. Hungrbox's Kirby seemed unable to land a hit on Zero Suit Samus (that dude was playing amazing, you guys better look that up on youtube), eventually he found his way dashing in right after Samus whiffed that long chain attack on the ground, but his punishing option was something like 70% the throw and the rest on short hops

NissanZaxima said on June 11, 2014 at 10:25 a.m.

LOL leave it to EventHubs to post a story about a -5 month tier list haha.

#28
leogeo2 said on June 11, 2014 at 10:28 a.m.

How the hell can you even put up a tier list almost half a year before a game is even released and expect it to be news?

This is not very good reporting. This is worse than simple speculation, it's just a list of nonsense.

#29
Redblaze27 said on June 11, 2014 at 10:32 a.m.

What is this garbage, the balancing & roster isn't even final. This list means nothing to 99.99% of players as they cant play that version.

theshredder39 said on June 11, 2014 at 10:35 a.m.

Can't say I agree with basing tiers off of a tournament that spent most of it's time with FFA but whatever.

I just don't know how to feel about Little Mac competitively. Sure, he's got a great ground game, but weak aerials in a game with a lot of aerial freedom is a little worrisome. I guess we'll see. And Rosalina being bottom tier is not really that surprising. Just wait until some crazy tech comes out that boosts her to top/high mid tier.

Oh, and yay Marth isn't as obviously OP in this one. Screw him and his f-air.

Oohwakamuu said on June 11, 2014 at 12:37 p.m.

I think everyone is missing the point. Fine, they did make a tier list. But all they're doing is comparing the current strengths of the characters so far. Its no different from all of us saying T Hawk is really good now during the first week Ultra came out in Japan.

#39
Chrisuchiwa said on June 11, 2014 at 12:58 p.m.

Not the same point. That was a playale version of the game not a Loketest. Also USF4 is just an update and we already know all the potential of all old chars. Your point is not valid.
You can say this char is good bc of this move or his speed or a gameplay but affirming he is top tier or low, mean you have explored all his potentialities and other chars ones too.

Just remind me Cammy was recognized as top tier only in 2013, one year after v.2012 released and Wesker, just please!

Kirby my main boy in every smash game. Even Melee. He is so cute+badass "Hiiiiii~"

Glad to hear he is strong in this version. ZSS was one of my favs in Brawl she looks amazing in this. I wonder how my other mains are doing, Luigi and Ness (who still hasn't been announced if he is even returning.)

Played at a BestBuy today, I can confirm that Little Mac is great in 1v1 on flat surfaces like Final Destination

My beloved Kirby is actually considered top tier for the first time since Smash 64? I hope this is certain and stays.

#47
Viro_veteruscy said on June 11, 2014 at 5:57 p.m.

Meh... the list is pointless. Love Smash but even I can think "Wtf?" with this. I think the best part was the grin I got when Little Mac used KO Punch on Rosalina and it didn't work on her lol. She too "heavy" to be Instant KO'd ;3

#48
Ninjanuity said on June 11, 2014 at 6:46 p.m.

She was at 0%....

It's not an OHKO move, rather a move that deals tremendous knockback. Like Jigglypuff's Rest.

#49
Gurpwnder said on June 11, 2014 at 7:26 p.m.

To add to your point, different stages have different positions for their horizontal / vertical blast lines.

For example, it's far easier to KO an opponent vertically in Melee's Yoshi's Island stage than it is on Melee's N64 Kirby's Dream Land.

GoodMan said on June 12, 2014 at 1:29 a.m.

Just talked to my brother at E3. He said he's been beasting with ZZS and Lil Mac. Currently won 4 T-shirts. He says that Megaman is probably the worst because of his terrible recovery time from attacks but he has a good Smash Ball special. Donkey Kong has gotten faster but less range. With the format the demos are using with items, 2 min rounds, and smash balls, i think its safe to assume this list is garbage. I trust my bros input. The only thing he said about Mac is that he has terrible level recovery but his kill power is probably the best in the game. Im heading to e3 tomorrow and see how it is.

#51
KarbyP said on June 12, 2014 at 4:52 a.m.

We did report that these were early tiers based solely on the E3 invitationals.

I won't try to change your mind, but keep in mind that even though the game is still months away from release... there's already been an invitational tournament.

While normally it would seem ridiculous for a tier list to exist when a fighting game isn't even out, the fact is that at E3 there was a playable version of the game that players got to compete on.

And this list is simply based off of impressions gathered from that non-final build that doesn't even have all of the characters.

If you think about it, it's really not very different from having a tier list formed for USF4 arcade v1.00, which didn't have Decapre, and did not have final changes for all of the game's characters implemented.

Of course, the Smash 4 tiers list posted is by no means definitive, and I'm glad to hear from AttorneyMayCry that Little Mac really excels at 1v1 on flat surfaces.

#52
Viro_veteruscy said on June 12, 2014 at 11:10 a.m.

Oh yes, fully aware of that. Merely a joke about her weight-class. Though it was a bit stated that the KO punch causes a OHKO, but whatever, it is better for it not to work at 0% and is balanced.
