Skullgirls Encore pot bonus at EVO 2014 now at $5,000, courtesy of Autumn Games and Lab Zero Games; Eliza's voice actress announced, played on stream

Posted by Cheng Kai 'KarbyP' Sim • June 7, 2014 at 11:01 a.m. PDT

If you're planning to attend EVO 2014 to compete in any of the multitude of excellent fighting games on the line-up this year, you may want to think about signing up for the Skullgirls Encore side tournament as well.

Because publisher Autumn Games and developer Lab Zero Games have just issued to the FGC 5,000 good reasons for doing so.

Autumn Games announced this week that they're donating an additional $1,500 to the tournament pot at EVO 2014 for Skullgirls Encore, on top of the $1,000 they previously pledged, for a total of $2,500 from them -- and that's not all.

Not wanting to be outdone by their publisher, Skullgirls Encore developer Lab Zero Games have also decided to match Autumn Games's generous donation dollar-for-dollar.

The money for Lab Zero Games's donation comes out of the proceeds made from selling Skullgirls merchandise on Eighty Sixed Clothing. The Skullgirls Encore developer emphasizes that none of it is from the Indiegogo campaign funds.

As a result, the pot bonus for Skullgirls Encore at EVO 2014 has suddenly ballooned from $1,000 to $5,000 in one fell swoop.

Apart from the Skullgirls Encore EVO 2014 pot bonus announcements, Lab Zero Games also announced the voice actors for upcoming DLC character Eliza and her supporting minions. They also showed off the new character's moves live on stream.

Hit the jump for the full details and to watch the stream archive.

From the official Skullgirls Encore forums:

After months of silence, Lab Zero have finally revealed the voice actors for upcoming DLC character Eliza, her skeletal parasite Sekhmet, and her two loyal servants Horace and Albus!

Eliza will be voiced by Michelle Ruff, famous for roles such as C.Viper from Street Fighter IV, Carl Clover from BlazBlue, Etna from Disgaea, and WAY more stuff.

Sekhmet will be voiced by Wendee Lee, who you may know as the voice of Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop, Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Konata from Lucky Star, and again, WAY more than I can reasonably list.

Horace will be voiced by Sean Schemmel, better known as ****ING GOKU.

Albus will be voiced by Christopher Corey Smith, best known as Rufus from Street Fighter IV, although he has quite a résumé.

With voice actors chosen and announced, you can expect these talented actors to grace your ears with their dulcet tones in the coming weeks.

Oh, and one more thing...

Eliza is coming to the Skullgirls ∞Endless Beta∞! The wait is finally over; owners of Skullgirls Encore on PC will be able to play her for the first time (in all of her unfinished glory) sometime this weekend. It will still be some time before she's ready for the spotlight, but beta players will have the chance to participate in her development and balancing until she's complete. You can discuss everything Eliza in her shiny new subforum.

Good way to give some love back the the Community Lab Zero, though I feel like you guys have already given so much.

Sadly I don't feel like this is going to encourage more people to play the game, which is a shame because its a ton of fun.

Justin Wong already plays it. But maybe he'll dedicate a little more time now.

Let's be honest. If its not an Capcom game then he won't be playing it for that long. Remember VF5FS, that ride didn't last too long.

Horace has a terrible voice choice and that really saddens me but I am still hype.

#16
Zeddy said on June 7, 2014 at 11:59 a.m.

He played in a tournament for it like last month. So it seems like he plays it if it's around.

#17
Wardog said on June 7, 2014 at 12:12 p.m.

Actually you're right... It won't bring people in or back. Which is sad cause the game is really fun. The problem this game is suffering, is the Skill filter isn't accurate and too many low skills are getting pair up with high skills players. Which you didn't even set your search for.

People quickly drop this game cause they're going against people who are really good and can instantly put them in a crazy long combo that you can't get out, Especially when you're new to the game. Its like new players won't stick to UMVC3 cause they'll just get combo to death without getting a single hit in. Then the next person will do the same thing to them.

Duckator only finished 3rd recently at the UFGT X tournament. Hopefully, he is going to have some serious competition this year.

4 things:
-Eliza is amazing so far
-Justin does play and like the game, but not too seriously since he doesn't really keep up with the changes.
-much thanks to Lab Zero, Autumn, and Eightysixed for their continued support above and beyond our expectations.
-Might not be as free for Duckator as people think since he got 3rd at UFGT

#21
Jason said on June 7, 2014 at 12:23 p.m.

That kind of thing will happen with any fighting game though. Especially if you have a small player pool.

The real problem is that it wasn't a very good game on launch and a lot of people wrote it off out of the gate. Its a very different game now then it was when it was released.

#22
Zeddy said on June 7, 2014 at 12:25 p.m.

The game is massively fun. I just wish everyone actually put in time to learn the game instead of playing it for two seconds and then claiming it's sh!t. I've been having non-stop fun with the game since launch.

Also, beginner rooms are your friend when starting out. And if someone too good joins it, just leave and start a new room. If you get paired up against someone in quick match, that sucks, but quick match is bad anyway. I usually only play in rooms.

I love playing this game, even though I'm horrid at it. Unfortunately, the XBL community is nonexistent, so I'm forced to just sit in the lab or do arcade... And that gets boring fast :(

Check out the Skullheart, the official Skullgirls forum, theres plenty of Xbox players around, on all skill levels.

Wardog said on June 7, 2014 at 1:44 p.m.

Yeah, you're right and I agree. But games like MvC and Skull girls that is combo heavy till your opponent die from one combo... is a really turn off for some people, especially casual. I know Tekken,SF, KOF and DoA got crazy juggling. I'm just saying casual don't like looking at their characters getting combo to death, especially when their always being pair up with high level players.

HooliganComboFTW said on June 7, 2014 at 3:14 p.m.

SG isn't even a combo heavy game anymore. It's just heavy momentum based where you would often see optimized undizzy medium length combos into an ambiguous reset into another medium length combo depending on the character you pick.

SG just makes it hard for the player on the defending end to reset things back to neutral never mind reversing the momentum favor. Mashed Supers (depends on character), Invis reversal assists, alpha counters, triggering an IPS or Undizzy burst (can be baited though), and patiently push block guard canceling are pretty much your only defensive options.

You forgot to mention Yukari Takeba (P3, P4AU) & Jill Valentine (RE: Revelations) as the roles Eliza's VA did.

On top of that, Horace's VA is also Lucario in the Pokemon anime movie "Lucario & the Mystery of Mew", as well as Lucario in Smash 4.

Would you like for them to unbalance the roster followed by adding 24 more characters and make 12 versions of the game for you to buy because this seems to be what accounts for fun now and days.

#44
Skode said on June 8, 2014 at 5:09 a.m.

They are unquestionably indie so seriously how the hell do they keep affording A Lister voice actors? Genuinely impressed if I do say so.

#45
Kawalorn said on June 8, 2014 at 6:54 a.m.

Voice Actors aren't really that expensive, espiecially for this kind of work.

#46
SnakeX said on June 8, 2014 at 10:39 a.m.

The amount of voice work done for fighting games is very small compared to say, an actual show or RPG or something else like that that is much lengthier and requires more talking. Especially for a game like Skullgirls. So less recording needing to be done means not having to pay these notable VAs as much!

#47
Makross said on June 9, 2014 at 2:21 p.m.

Skullgirls has that thing where when you throw a fireball, per instance, you don't hear the same clip over and over again like you do on games like Blazblue or even Street Fighter. They had around +100 clips for every characters.
