This is true music we're making - Big Band plays Bugler's Holiday, other songs with his trumpet in Skullgirls Encore

Posted by Cheng Kai 'KarbyP' Sim • July 18, 2014 at 8:31 a.m. PDT

Skullgirls is a fighting game known for some of the most soulful BGMs in the genre's history, no doubt thanks to its excellent composing credits which include Michiru Yamane of Castlevania and other Konami game music's fame.

But did you know that, with the addition of Big Band to the game's roster, developer Lab Zero Games has effectively given players a means to play entire songs in the middle of a match (or, more likely, training mode) through by having the character pull out his trumpet with medium punch, and then hitting the right buttons at the right time?

The process is incredibly difficult if you were to try and do it organically (i.e. without tool-assistance). But if you were to write down the inputs and do it as a tool-assisted video, the results can be quite impressive -- such as the efforts of Japanese Skullgirls player KST, which you can listen to below.

Bugler's Holiday

Secret of Mana: Meridian Dance

Paganini Moto Perpetuo

(For some reason I laughed out loud when I heard this)

Natsu Matsuri (J-Pop)

Touhou: U.N. Owen Was Her?

Check out Smooth McGroove's version of the same song if you need something to compare this to.

Bonus: practical trumpet combos ft. McDonald's I'm Lovin' It, Super Mario Bros., etc

Videos from SKT KST.

When they first talked about big band they made it sound like you could make a tune with an actual combo. Pity that can't be done.

You can, it just has to be a short tune. Most dont do it because it's not optimized, but it's very possible.

Did big band make a Cowboy bebop reference? I couldn't hardly hear it but something with the wheels are turning, see you in space. I couldn't hear the rest.

I love that series! :)

Mike Z or anybody please answer this. Thanks

Hey Karby.

that name of the title that you use... is that a twist to CVS2 song "this is true love makin" London stage?

Cause that was clever. Congrats on that one.lol

Yes it is! :D Thank you for noticing!

Recently I watched a Skullgirls video where the announcer actually said "This is true love we're making!" right at the start of a round, so I was inspired by that. :D

Damn, I was hoping someone made the london stage music from CVS2. This is still amazing though, especially the first one. :D

I tried that initially.

Problem is, most combos have a rhythm that is nothing like melodic music, with long awkward pauses between random fast or slow parts. Even with some creative assignment of multiple notes to each move and choosing one based on what you did previously so the actual sounds he made were "in tune" with each other, during normal play it honestly sounded like total ass. I also tried chopping up a song and only playing the bits you hit buttons on, like Guitar Hero, but that worked even less well since you very what you're doing as a combo per hit you land.

So instead, we went with both a normal and a super that let you play a solo without worrying about timing hits, as well as putting enough unique sounds in his moveset that Bugler's Holiday was able to be performed that way.

I think we did okay. :^)

Two references to that one. Both from anime that ended with a phrase at the end. The second half of what Big Band says is the obvious one from Cowboy Bebop. The first half is from The Big O. People always forget about that one.

Taught myself to play the first part of Guile's theme on the trumpet when he was released. I've forgotten now though :/
